Abstract Answer Set Solvers, Yuliya Lierler Jan 2008

Abstract Answer Set Solvers, Yuliya Lierler

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Nieuwenhuis, Oliveras, and Tinelli showed how to describe enhancements of the Davis-Putnam-Logemann-Loveland algorithm using transition systems, instead of pseudocode. We design a similar framework for three algorithms that generate answer sets for logic programs: SMODELS, ASP-SAT with Backtracking, and a newly designed and implemented algorithm SUP. This approach to describing answer set solvers makes it easier to prove their correctness, to compare them, and to design new systems.

Information Technology Adoption By Small Businesses In Minority And Ethnic Communities, Sajda Qureshi, Anne S. York Jan 2008

Information Technology Adoption By Small Businesses In Minority And Ethnic Communities, Sajda Qureshi, Anne S. York

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Information systems adoption by small businesses often is viewed as a basic building block of economic development. Yet, the components that impact business success and thus economic development are mostly unexplored, especially within the context of minority and ethnic communities, both domestically and internationally. Given that IT adoption in small businesses is very often the domain of the business owner, an investigation of how the attributes of individual business owners and the context in which they are embedded is essential. This paper develops an integrative model of the role that IT adoption plays in business success and the economic development …

Adoption Of Information Technology By Micro-Enterprises: Insights From A Rural Community, Sajda Qureshi, Mehruz Kamal, Travis Good

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

It appears that the growth of micro-enterprises is a key driver of economic development in underserved communities. However their growth is limited to only 20% of the economy even though they comprise 87% of businesses in Nebraska. Research has shown that IT adoption can increase their growth by 3.5% but the challenges to IT adoption by microenterprises are many. Current theoretical models on IT adoption focus on the intent to adopt IT in large organizations where employees’ attitudes and perceptions are measured in terms of their objectives within the structures of accountability. Microenterprises are unique in that the intention to …

Synergistic Ideation Through Pairing Participants In Facilitated Group Support Systems Sessions, John D. Murphy, Deepak Khazanchi Jan 2008

Synergistic Ideation Through Pairing Participants In Facilitated Group Support Systems Sessions, John D. Murphy, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Group Support Systems (GSS) have been used and studied in the support of facilitated ideation sessions for years. The norm for these sessions has been for participants to work individually at GSS workstations. A review of applicable literature suggests that pairing participants at GSS workstations could result in higher quality ideas and participant satisfaction. This paper reports the results of a lab experiment that tested for differences between paired and unpaired facilitated GSS sessions. These results suggest that pairing participants can yield higher quality ideas from facilitated ideation without negative consequences.

Model-Based Instrumentation Of Distributed Applications, Jan Schäfer Jan 2008

Model-Based Instrumentation Of Distributed Applications, Jan Schäfer

Theses

Problems such as inconsistent or erroneous instrumentation often plague applications whose source code is manually instrumented during the implementation phase. Integrating performance instrumentation capabilities into the Model Driven Software Development (MDSD) process would greatly assist software engineers who do not have detailed knowledge of source code instrumentation technologies. This thesis presents an approach that offers instrumentation support to software designers and developers. A collection of instrumentation patterns is defined to represent typical instrumentation scenarios for distributed applications. A UML profile derived from these patterns is then used to annotate UML models. Based on suitable code generation templates, the annotated models …

Optrr: Optimizing Randomized Response Schemes For Privacy-Preserving Data Mining, Zhengli Huang, Wenliang Du Jan 2008

Optrr: Optimizing Randomized Response Schemes For Privacy-Preserving Data Mining, Zhengli Huang, Wenliang Du

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The randomized response (RR) technique is a promising technique to disguise private categorical data in Privacy-Preserving Data Mining (PPDM). Although a number of RR-based methods have been proposed for various data mining computations, no study has systematically compared them to find optimal RR schemes. The difficulty of comparison lies in the fact that to compare two PPDM schemes, one needs to consider two conflicting metrics: privacy and utility. An optimal scheme based on one metric is usually the worst based on the other metric. In this paper, we first describe a method to quantify privacy and utility. We formulate the …

A Translation Engine In Support Of Context-Level Interoperability, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl Jan 2008

A Translation Engine In Support Of Context-Level Interoperability, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The support of context-level interoperability demands increasing attention in today’s arena of semantics-oriented decision-support systems. Unlike data-oriented exchange, such semantic interoperability must venture beyond the elementary communication of discrete data values and endeavor to translate between significantly more expressive, context-rich representations. Further, support of this level of interoperability must not require a contamination of the native perspective embedded within each participant’s representation. Offered as a foundation upon which specific interoperability solutions can be developed, this paper presents a service-oriented framework supporting an extensible set of translation paradigms to effectively connect expressive ontology-based environments. Fundamental to this capability is the notion …

Automated Regression Testing Approach To Expansion And Refinement Of Speech Recognition Grammars, Raul Dookhoo Jan 2008

Automated Regression Testing Approach To Expansion And Refinement Of Speech Recognition Grammars, Raul Dookhoo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes an approach to automated regression testing for speech recognition grammars. A prototype Audio Regression Tester called ART has been developed using Microsoft's Speech API and C#. ART allows a user to perform any of three tasks: automatically generate a new XML-based grammar file from standardized SQL database entries, record and cross-reference audio files for use by an underlying speech recognition engine, and perform regression tests with the aid of an oracle grammar. ART takes as input a wave sound file containing speech and a newly created XML grammar file. It then simultaneously executes two tests: one with …

Alayzing The Effects Of Modularity On Search Spaces, Ozlem Garibay Jan 2008

Alayzing The Effects Of Modularity On Search Spaces, Ozlem Garibay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We are continuously challenged by ever increasing problem complexity and the need to develop algorithms that can solve complex problems and solve them within a reasonable amount of time. Modularity is thought to reduce problem complexity by decomposing large problems into smaller and less complex subproblems. In practice, introducing modularity into evolutionary algorithm representations appears to improve search performance; however, how and why modularity improves performance is not well understood. In this thesis, we seek to better understand the effects of modularity on search. In particular, what are the effects of module creation on the search space structure and how …

Vcluster: A Portable Virtual Computing Library For Cluster Computing, Hua Zhang Jan 2008

Vcluster: A Portable Virtual Computing Library For Cluster Computing, Hua Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Message passing has been the dominant parallel programming model in cluster computing, and libraries like Message Passing Interface (MPI) and Portable Virtual Machine (PVM) have proven their novelty and efficiency through numerous applications in diverse areas. However, as clusters of Symmetric Multi-Processor (SMP) and heterogeneous machines become popular, conventional message passing models must be adapted accordingly to support this new kind of clusters efficiently. In addition, Java programming language, with its features like object oriented architecture, platform independent bytecode, and native support for multithreading, makes it an alternative language for cluster computing. This research presents a new parallel programming model …

Semantic Video Retrieval Using High Level Context, Yusuf Aytar Jan 2008

Semantic Video Retrieval Using High Level Context, Yusuf Aytar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Video retrieval - searching and retrieving videos relevant to a user defined query - is one of the most popular topics in both real life applications and multimedia research. This thesis employs concepts from Natural Language Understanding in solving the video retrieval problem. Our main contribution is the utilization of the semantic word similarity measures for video retrieval through the trained concept detectors, and the visual co-occurrence relations between such concepts. We propose two methods for content-based retrieval of videos: (1) A method for retrieving a new concept (a concept which is not known to the system and no annotation …

Appearance-Driven Material Design, Mark Colbert Jan 2008

Appearance-Driven Material Design, Mark Colbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the computer graphics production environment, artists often must tweak specific lighting and material parameters to match a mind's eye vision of the appearance of a 3D scene. However, the interaction between a material and a lighting environment is often too complex to cognitively predict without visualization. Therefore, artists operate in a design cycle, where they tweak the parameters, wait for a visualization, and repeat, seeking to obtain a desired look. We propose the use of appearance-driven material design. Here, artists directly design the appearance of reflected light for a specific view, surface point, and time. In this thesis, we …

Space-Time Multiresolution Approach To Atomistic Visualization, Dipesh Bhattarai Jan 2008

Space-Time Multiresolution Approach To Atomistic Visualization, Dipesh Bhattarai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Time-varying three-dimensional positional atomistic data are rich in spatial and temporal information. The problem is to understand them. This work offers multiple approaches that enable such understanding. An interactive atomistic visualization system is developed integrating complex analyses with visualization to present the data on space-time multiresolution basis facilitating the information extraction and generate understanding. This work also shows the usefulness of such an integrated approach. The information obtained from the analyses represents the system at multiple length and time scales. Radial distribution function (RDF) provides a complete average spatial map of the distribution of the atoms in the system which …

This paper summarizes the results of an industry case study that introduced a cross-system business process automation solution based on a combination of SOA and BPM standard technologies (i.e., BPMN, BPEL, WSDL). Besides discussing major weaknesses of the existing, custom-built, solution and comparing them against experiences with the developed prototype, the paper presents a course of action for transforming the current solution into the proposed solution. This includes a general approach, consisting of four distinct steps, as well as specific action items that are to be performed for every step. The discussion also covers language and tool support and challenges …

Online File Sharing: Resolving The Tensions Between Privacy And Property, Frances Grodzinsky, Herman T. Tavani Jan 2008

Online File Sharing: Resolving The Tensions Between Privacy And Property, Frances Grodzinsky, Herman T. Tavani

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

This essay expands upon an earlier work (Grodzinsky and Tavani, 2005) in which we analyzed the implications of the Verizon v RIAA case for P2P Networks vis-à-vis concerns affecting personal privacy and intellectual property. In the present essay we revisit some of the concerns surrounding this case by analyzing the intellectual property and privacy issues that emerged in the MGM Studios v. Grokster case. These two cases illustrate some of the key tensions that exist between privacy and property interests in cyberspace. In our analysis, we contrast Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Interoperability and we examine some newer distribution models …
