A Structured Systemic Framework For Software Development, Kevin Macgregor Adams Apr 2007

A Structured Systemic Framework For Software Development, Kevin Macgregor Adams

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop and apply a systems-based framework for the analysis of software development project performance. Software development project performance is measured at the project level; that is, cost, schedule, and product quality that affect the overall project. To date, most performance improvement efforts have been focused on individual processes within the overall software development system. Making improvements to sub-elements, processes, or sub-systems without regard for the overall project is a classic misbehavior entered into by practitioners who fail to use a holistic, systemic approach. Attempts to improve sub-system behavior are at odds with The …

Vulnerability Analysis Of Emap: An Efficient Rfid Mutual Authentication Protocol, Tieyan Li, Robert H. Deng Apr 2007

Vulnerability Analysis Of Emap: An Efficient Rfid Mutual Authentication Protocol, Tieyan Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we analyze the security vulnerabilities of EMAP, an efficient RFID mutual authentication protocol recently proposed by Peris-Lopez et al. (2006). We present two effective attacks, a de-synchronization attack and a full-disclosure attack, against the protocol. The former permanently disables the authentication capability of a RFID tag by destroying synchronization between the tag and the RFID reader. The latter completely compromises a tag by extracting all the secret information stored in the tag. The de-synchronization attack can be carried out in just round of interaction in EMAP while the full-disclosure attack is accomplished across several runs of EMAP. …

Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian, Jason Sawin, Atanas Rountev Apr 2007

Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian, Jason Sawin, Atanas Rountev

Publications and Research

Modern Java languages introduce several new features that offer significant improvements over older Java technology. In this article we consider the new enum construct, which provides language support for enumerated types. Prior to recent Java languages, programmers needed to employ various patterns (e.g., the weak enum pattern) to compensate for the absence of enumerated types in Java. Unfortunately, these compensation patterns lack several highly-desirable properties of the enum construct, most notably, type safety. We present a novel fully-automated approach for transforming legacy Java code to use the new enumeration construct. This semantics-preserving approach increases type safety, produces code that is …

Multi-Class Classification Averaging Fusion For Detecting Steganography, Benjamin M. Rodriguez, Gilbert L. Peterson, Sos S. Agaian

Faculty Publications

Multiple classifier fusion has the capability of increasing classification accuracy over individual classifier systems. This paper focuses on the development of a multi-class classification fusion based on weighted averaging of posterior class probabilities. This fusion system is applied to the steganography fingerprint domain, in which the classifier identifies the statistical patterns in an image which distinguish one steganography algorithm from another. Specifically we focus on algorithms in which jpeg images provide the cover in order to communicate covertly. The embedding methods targeted are F5, JSteg, Model Based, OutGuess, and StegHide. The developed multi-class steganalvsis system consists of three levels: (1) …

Social Network Structures In Open Source Software Development Teams, Y. Long, Keng Siau Apr 2007

Social Network Structures In Open Source Software Development Teams, Y. Long, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Drawing on social network theories and previous studies, this research examines the dynamics of social network structures in open source software (OSS) teams. Three projects were selected from SourceForge.net in terms of their similarities as well as their differences. Monthly data were extracted from the bug tracking systems in order to achieve a longitudinal view of the interaction pattern of each project. Social network analysis was used to generate the indices of social structure. The finding suggests that the interaction pattern of OSS projects evolves from a single hub at the beginning to a corel periphery model as the projects …

A Multimodal And Multilevel Ranking Framework For Content-Based Video Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Apr 2007

A Multimodal And Multilevel Ranking Framework For Content-Based Video Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One critical task in content-based video retrieval is to rank search results with combinations of multimodal resources effectively. This paper proposes a novel multimodal and multilevel ranking framework for content-based video retrieval. The main idea of our approach is to represent videos by graphs and learn harmonic ranking functions through fusing multimodal resources over these graphs smoothly. We further tackle the efficiency issue by a multilevel learning scheme, which makes the semi-supervised ranking method practical for large-scale applications. Our empirical evaluations on TRECVID 2005 dataset show that the proposed multimodal and multilevel ranking framework is effective and promising for content-based …

Mining Colossal Frequent Patterns By Core Pattern Fusion, Feida Zhu, Xifeng Yan, Jiawei Han, Philip S. Yu, Hong Cheng Apr 2007

Mining Colossal Frequent Patterns By Core Pattern Fusion, Feida Zhu, Xifeng Yan, Jiawei Han, Philip S. Yu, Hong Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Extensive research for frequent-pattern mining in the past decade has brought forth a number of pattern mining algorithms that are both effective and efficient. However, the existing frequent-pattern mining algorithms encounter challenges at mining rather large patterns, called colossal frequent patterns, in the presence of an explosive number of frequent patterns. Colossal patterns are critical to many applications, especially in domains like bioinformatics. In this study, we investigate a novel mining approach called Pattern-Fusion to efficiently find a good approximation to the colossal patterns. With Pattern-Fusion, a colossal pattern is discovered by fusing its small core patterns in one step, …

Summarizing Review Scores Of "Unequal" Reviewers, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang Apr 2007

Summarizing Review Scores Of "Unequal" Reviewers, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A frequently encountered problem in decision making is the following review problem: review a large number of objects and select a small number of the best ones. An example is selecting conference papers from a large number of submissions. This problem involves two sub-problems: assigning reviewers to each object, and summarizing reviewers ’ scores into an overall score that supposedly reflects the quality of an object. In this paper, we address the score summarization sub-problem for the scenario where a small number of reviewers evaluate each object. Simply averaging the scores may not work as even a single reviewer could …

A Resolution Enhancement Technique In Digital Images, Mehmet R. Ormanoglu Apr 2007

A Resolution Enhancement Technique In Digital Images, Mehmet R. Ormanoglu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Image enhancement is the processing of images to increase their usefulness. The image enhancement methods and objectives vary with the application. When images are enhanced for human viewers, as in television, the objective is mostly to improve perceptual aspects: image quality, intelligibility, or visual appearance. The aim of this research work is to make the processed image better in the visual sense than the unprocessed image. An image can often be enhanced by modifying its contrast or dynamic range, increasing the sharpness of edges, reducing the noise, or reducing the blurring. The most commonly used contrast enhancement technique is histogram …

The Case For Teaching Network Protocols To Computer Forensics Examiners, Gary C. Kessler, Matt Fasulo Apr 2007

The Case For Teaching Network Protocols To Computer Forensics Examiners, Gary C. Kessler, Matt Fasulo

Publications

"Most computer forensics experts are well-versed in basic computer hardware technology, operating systems, common software applications, and computer forensics tools. And while many have rudimentary knowledge about the Internet and simple network-lookup tools, they are not trained in the analysis of network communication protocols and the use of packet sniffers. This paper describes digital forensics applications for network analysis and includes four case studies."

Diagnosing Reading Strategies: Paraphrase Recognition, Chutima Boonthum Apr 2007

Diagnosing Reading Strategies: Paraphrase Recognition, Chutima Boonthum

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Paraphrase recognition is a form of natural language processing used in tutoring, question answering, and information retrieval systems. The context of the present work is an automated reading strategy trainer called iSTART (Interactive Strategy Trainer for Active Reading and Thinking). The ability to recognize the use of paraphrase—a complete, partial, or inaccurate paraphrase; with or without extra information—in the student's input is essential if the trainer is to give appropriate feedback. I analyzed the most common patterns of paraphrase and developed a means of representing the semantic structure of sentences. Paraphrases are recognized by transforming sentences into this representation and …
