A Genetic Algorithm For Cellular Manufacturing Design And Layout, Xiaodan Wu, Chao-Hsien Chu, Yunfeng Wang, Weili Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cellular manufacturing (CM) is an approach that can be used to enhance both flexibility and efficiency in today’s small-to-medium lot production environment. The design of a CM system (CMS) often involves three major decisions: cell formation, group layout, and group schedule. Ideally, these decisions should be addressed simultaneously in order to obtain the best results. However, due to the complexity and NP-complete nature of each decision and the limitations of traditional approaches, most researchers have only addressed these decisions sequentially or independently. In this study, a hierarchical genetic algorithm is developed to simultaneously form manufacturing cells and determine the group …

Remote health monitoring affords the possibility of improving the quality of health care by enabling relatively inexpensive out-patient care. However, remote health monitoring raises new a problem: the potential for data explosion in health care systems. To address this problem, the remote health monitoring systems must be integrated with analysis tools that provide automated trend analysis and event detection in real time. In this paper, we propose an overview of Century, an extensible framework for analysis of large numbers of remote sensor-based medical data streams.

A Lateral Symmetry Approach To Percentage-Based Hybrid Pattern (Php) Training, Sheng-Uei Guan, Kiruthika Ramanathan Aug 2007

A Lateral Symmetry Approach To Percentage-Based Hybrid Pattern (Php) Training, Sheng-Uei Guan, Kiruthika Ramanathan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate the application of lateral symmetry to supervised learning using genetic algorithms. The hypothesis is motivated by the presence of symmetry in the animal brain and by research results showing approximately equal task division between the two hemispheres of the brain. In this paper, each training pattern is considered a task. By applying the concept of lateral symmetry, we use global training (a typically right brained activity) to learn half the tasks and local training (a left brained activity) to learn the rest of the tasks. We verified the use of this Percentage-based Pattern (PHP) training …

Near-Duplicate Keyframe Identification With Interest Point Matching And Pattern Learning, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hung-Khoon Tan, Xiao Wu Aug 2007

Near-Duplicate Keyframe Identification With Interest Point Matching And Pattern Learning, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hung-Khoon Tan, Xiao Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a new approach for near-duplicate keyframe (NDK) identification by matching, filtering and learning of local interest points (LIPs) with PCA-SIFT descriptors. The issues in matching reliability, filtering efficiency and learning flexibility are novelly exploited to delve into the potential of LIP-based retrieval and detection. In matching, we propose a one-to-one symmetric matching (OOS) algorithm which is found to be highly reliable for NDK identification, due to its capability in excluding false LIP matches compared with other matching strategies. For rapid filtering, we address two issues: speed efficiency and search effectiveness, to support OOS with a new index …

Measuring Knowledge Sharing In Open Source Software Development Teams, Y. Long, Keng Siau, K. Howell

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The study provides an approach to measure the extent of knowledge sharing in Open Source Software (OSS) development in terms of two aspects: the quality of knowledge sharing which is indicated by the helpfulness of the messages, and the quantity of knowledge sharing which is indicated by the volume of the messages. The study developed a computer-aided content analysis program to assess the helpfulness of the messages based on a set of keywords and the length of the messages. The approach was applied to measure the extent of knowledge sharing of 150 OSS projects. The results further confirmed that the …

Design Science Research On Systems Analysis And Design: The Case Of Uml, X. Tan, Keng Siau, J. Erickson

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Design science in the IS discipline seeks to create artifacts that embody the ideas, practices, technical capabilities, and products required to efficiently accomplish the analysis, design, implementation, and use of information systems (Hevner et al 2006). SA&D research, being close to the design science paradigm, has suffered from a lack of appreciation from the behavioral science paradigm. To provide a paradigmatic foundation, we propose a conceptual framework for SA&D research. The framewor was developed based on several essays that systematically articulate the design science paradigm in the IS field. Using this framework, we reviewed some UML papers that appeared in …

Teaching in the classroom faces many challenges of providing a collaborative, interactive environment that effectively facilitates students’ learning. The challenges increase when the physical classroom converts into a virtual classroom. This difficulty is further exacerbated when the course is diagramming intensive, practice-oriented, and hands-on in nature. Technology has been sought after to help with these challenges. Web Conferencing software, when compared to Web Broadcasting software, can facilitate real-time interaction and collaboration in a distance learning context. For courses that are diagramming intensive and practice-oriented, Tablet PCs, when compared to desktop PCs, can support drawing and diagramming because of the ability …

Theoretical And Practical Complexity Of Modeling Methods, John Erickson, Keng Siau Aug 2007

Theoretical And Practical Complexity Of Modeling Methods, John Erickson, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The estimation of theoretical and practical complexity of a system development method is discussed. Executable model capability allow developers to transform models developed during the Systems Analysis and Design portion of the systems development process into working applications. Systems are becoming more complex mostly because of influencing factors such as required and enhanced functionality, interoperability, and security. Other trends that impact the complexity of applications include systems such as enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, and customer relationship management. These types of systems are very large and complex and require close internal cooperation for the implementing organizations individually and also …

Pre-Conference Proceedings Of The Focus Symposium On Representation Of Context In Software Data → Information → Knowledge, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

For the past 20 years commercial corporations and government agencies have suffered under the limitations of stove-piped computer software applications that function as discrete entities within a fragmented data-processing environment. In the United States of America (US) military services, lack of interoperability has been identified by numerous think tanks, advisory boards, and studies, as the primary information systems problem (e.g., Army Science Board 2000, Air Force SAB 2000 Command and Control Study, and NSB Network-Centric Naval Forces 2000). Yet, despite this level of attention, all attempts to achieve interoperability within the current data-centric information systems environment have proven to be …

Knowledge Management Enterprise Services (Kmes): Concepts And Implementation Principles, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2007

Knowledge Management Enterprise Services (Kmes): Concepts And Implementation Principles, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this paper is to present concepts and implementation principles related to the design and development of reusable software services that are capable of assisting users at the operational level. Knowledge Management Enterprise Services (KMES) are an implementation of the service-oriented architecture paradigm, with a focus on the exchange of data within the meaningful context of a particular application (i.e., knowledge) domain. This requires a KMES service to incorporate a high level representation of this knowledge domain in the form of an ontology that is shared among all collaborating services within the application environment and at the same …

Alternative Paths To Intelligent Systems, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2007

Alternative Paths To Intelligent Systems, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper examines the three prevalent approaches to Artificial Intelligence (AI), namely symbolic reasoning systems, connectionist systems, and emergent systems based on the principles of the subsumption theory. Distinguished by their top-down and bottom-up mechanisms all three approaches have strengths and weaknesses. While the logical reasoning approach is precise and well supported by mathematical theories and procedures, it is constrained by a largely predefined representational model. Connectionist systems, on the other hand, are able to recognize patterns even if these patterns are only similar and not identical to the patterns that they have been trained to recognize, but they have …

Enhancing The Face Of Service-Oriented Capabilities, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2007

Enhancing The Face Of Service-Oriented Capabilities, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

With today’s focus toward discoverable web services, Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) are becoming increasingly prevalent. To support an effective interaction between services and their clientele, the sophistication of the interface, or face, such services present is of critical importance. Without a rich, expressive nature, such services struggle to satisfy the industry promises of reuse, composability, and reduced inter-component dependencies. Especially relevant for domain-oriented applications, services must present sufficient levels of expression to allow for an effective exchange of relevant context. Further, such communication should be offered in an asynchronous manner to promote both work flow efficiency and limited coupling.

Sampling Methods In Ray-Based Global Illumination, David Cline Jul 2007

Sampling Methods In Ray-Based Global Illumination, David Cline

Theses and Dissertations

In computer graphics, algorithms that attempt to create photographic images by simulating light transport are collectively known as Global Illumination methods. The most versatile of these are based on ray tracing (following ray paths through a scene), and numerical integration using random or quasi-random sampling. While ray tracing and sampling methods in global illumination have progressed much in the last two decades, the goal of fast and accurate simulation of light transport remains elusive. This dissertation presents a number of new sampling methods that attempt to address some of the shortcomings of existing global illumination algorithms. The first part of …

Infrastructure Hardening: A Competitive Co-Evolutionary Methodology Inspired By Neo-Darwinian Arms Races, Travis Service, Daniel R. Tauritz, William M. Siever

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The world is increasingly dependent on critical infrastructures such as the electric power grid, water, gas, and oil transport systems, which are susceptible to cascading failures that can result from a few faults. Due to the combinatorial complexity in the search spaces involved, most traditional search techniques are inappropriate for identifying these faults and potential protections against them. This paper provides a computational methodology employing competitive coevolution to simultaneously identify low-effort, high-impact faults and corresponding means of hardening infrastructures against them. A power system case study provides empirical evidence that our proposed methodology is capable of identifying cost effective modifications …

Secure Cryptographic Precomputation With Insecure Memory, Patrick P. Tsang, Sean W. Smith Jul 2007

Secure Cryptographic Precomputation With Insecure Memory, Patrick P. Tsang, Sean W. Smith

Computer Science Technical Reports

Precomputation dramatically reduces the execution latency of many cryptographic algorithms. To sustain the reduced latency over time during which these algorithms are routinely invoked, however, a pool of precomputation results must be stored and be readily available. While precomputation is an old and well-known technique, how to securely and yet efficiently store these precomputation results has largely been ignored. For instance, requiring tamper-proof memory would be too expensive, if not unrealistic, for precomputation to be cost-effective. In this paper, we propose an architecture that provides secure storage for cryptographic precomputation using only insecure memory, which may be eavesdropped or even …

Specification Of Non-Functional Requirements For Contract Specification In The Ngoss Framework For Quality Management And Product Evaluation, Manooch Amoozdeh, Nektarios Georgalas, Xiaoqing Frank Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The community of operation support systems (OSS) for telecom applications defined a set of fundamental principles, processes, and architectures for developing the next generation OSS through the TeleManagement Forum TMF. At the heart of NGOSS lies the notion of a "contract" which embodies the specification of services offered by an OSS component for quality management and product evaluation. However, TMF does not provide any method (or process) for specification of the non-functional part in the NGOSS contract specification. In this paper, we develop a systematic approach for specifying non-functional requirements of telecom OSS applications for contracts in the NGOSS framework …

Task-Based Mood Induction Procedures For The Elicitation Of Natural Emotional Responses., Brian Vaughan, Charlie Cullen, Spyros Kousidis, Yi Wang Jul 2007

Task-Based Mood Induction Procedures For The Elicitation Of Natural Emotional Responses., Brian Vaughan, Charlie Cullen, Spyros Kousidis, Yi Wang

Other resources

This paper details experimental procedures designed to elicit real emotional responses from participants within a controlled acoustic environment. The experiments use Mood Induction Procedures (MIP’s), specifically MIP 4, to implement a co-operative task using two participants. These cooperative tasks are designed to engender emotional responses of activation and evaluation from the participants who are situated in separate isolation booths, thus reducing unwanted noise in the signal, preventing the participants from being distracted and ensuring a cleanly recorded audio signal. The audio is recorded at a professional level of quality (24bit/192Khz). The emotional dimensions of each audio recording will be evaluated …

Or Best Offer: A Privacy Policy Negotiation Protocol, Daniel David Walker Jul 2007

Or Best Offer: A Privacy Policy Negotiation Protocol, Daniel David Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Users today are concerned about how their information is collected, stored and used by Internet sites. Privacy policy languages, such as the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P), allow websites to publish their privacy practices and policies in machine readable form. Currently, software agents designed to protect users' privacy follow a "take it or leave it" approach when evaluating these privacy policies. This approach is inflexible and gives the server ultimate control over the privacy of web transactions. Privacy policy negotiation is one approach to leveling the playing field by allowing a client to negotiate with a server to determine how …

Empirical Software Engineering In Industry Short Courses, David S. Janzen, Hossein Saiedian Jul 2007

Empirical Software Engineering In Industry Short Courses, David S. Janzen, Hossein Saiedian

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper reports on a pilot project that incorporated small empirical studies in three industry short courses. These laboratory experiments were one component of a larger leveled study on the effects of test-driven development (TDD) on internal software quality. The approach is proposed to have pedagogical value to student-developers by improving their understanding and appreciation for empirical evidence, to instructors by providing feedback through surveys and exercises, and to the community at large by reporting results of the studies. Pre-experiment surveys in the three pilot experiments revealed large differences in programmer opinions of TDD. Possible correlations to development environment and …

Extensible Pre-Authentication In Kerberos, Phillip L. Hellewell Jul 2007

Extensible Pre-Authentication In Kerberos, Phillip L. Hellewell

Theses and Dissertations

Organizations need to provide services to a wide range of people, including strangers outside their local security domain. As the number of users grows larger, it becomes increasingly tedious to maintain and provision user accounts. It remains an open problem to create a system for provisioning outsiders that is secure, flexible, efficient, scalable, and easy to manage. Kerberos is a secure, industry-standard protocol. Currently, Kerberos operates as a closed system; all users must be specified upfront and managed on an individual basis. This paper presents EPAK (Extensible Pre-Authentication in Kerberos), a framework that enables Kerberos to operate as an open …

Obstacle Avoidance And Path Traversal Using Interactive Machine Learning, Jonathan M. Turner Jul 2007

Obstacle Avoidance And Path Traversal Using Interactive Machine Learning, Jonathan M. Turner

Theses and Dissertations

Recently there has been a growing interest in using robots in activities that are dangerous or cost prohibitive for humans to do. Such activities include military uses and space exploration. While robotic hardware is often capable of being used in these types of situations, the ability of human operators to control robots in an effective manner is often limited. This deficiency is often related to the control interface of the robot and the level of autonomy that control system affords the human operator. This thesis describes a robot control system, called the safe/unsafe system, which gives a human operator the …

Supporting Lexical Ontology Learning By Relational Exploration, Sebastian Rudolph, Johanna Volker, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2007

Supporting Lexical Ontology Learning By Relational Exploration, Sebastian Rudolph, Johanna Volker, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Designing and refining ontologies becomes a tedious task, once the boundary to real-world-size knowledge bases has been crossed. Hence semi-automatic methods supporting those tasks will determine the future success of ontologies in practice. In this paper we describe a way for ontology creation and refinement by combining techniques from natural language processing (NLP) and formal concept analysis (FCA). We point out how synergy between those two fields can be established thereby overcoming each other’s shortcomings.

Efficient Computation Of Iceberg Cubes By Bounding Aggregate Functions, Xiuzhen Zhang, Pauline Lienhua Chou, Guozhu Dong Jul 2007

Efficient Computation Of Iceberg Cubes By Bounding Aggregate Functions, Xiuzhen Zhang, Pauline Lienhua Chou, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

The iceberg cubing problem is to compute the multidimensional group-by partitions that satisfy given aggregation constraints. Pruning unproductive computation for iceberg cubing when nonantimonotone constraints are present is a great challenge because the aggregate functions do not increase or decrease monotonically along the subset relationship between partitions. In this paper, we propose a novel bound prune cubing (BP-Cubing) approach for iceberg cubing with nonantimonotone aggregation constraints. Given a cube over n dimensions, an aggregate for any group-by partition can be computed from aggregates for the most specific n--dimensional partitions (MSPs). The largest and smallest aggregate values computed this way become …
