Application Packaging Tracking System, Cormac Quillinan Aug 2007

Application Packaging Tracking System, Cormac Quillinan

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In the business world it is very difficult to manage and track user application installations and licensing. The primary problem with this area is currently there is no single solution that encapsulates the entire process. The current commercially available tracking systems, such as SMS, DevTrack and Installshield Tracking system, do not provide a complete solution. These products provide partial solutions. However, they do not address the entire problem. In this thesis we proposed an Application Packaging Tracking System. This system tracks application installations throughout the entire process, from submission to deployment.

Faster Algorithms For Stable Allocation Problems, Siddharth Munshi Aug 2007

Faster Algorithms For Stable Allocation Problems, Siddharth Munshi

All Theses

We consider a high-multiplicity generalization of the classical stable matching problem known as the stable allocation problem, introduced by Baiou and Balinski in 2002. By leveraging new structural properties and sophisticated data structures, we show how to solve this problem in O(mlog n) time on an bipartite instance with n nodes and m edges, improving the best known running time of O(mn). Our approach simplifies the algorithmic landscape for this problem by providing a common generalization of two different approaches from the literature -- the classical Gale-Shapley algorithm, and a recent algorithm of Baiou and Balinski. Building on this algorithm, …

Using Fuzzy-Word Correlation Factors To Compute Document Similarity Based On Phrase Matching, Jun Won Lee, Yiu-Kai D. Ng Aug 2007

Using Fuzzy-Word Correlation Factors To Compute Document Similarity Based On Phrase Matching, Jun Won Lee, Yiu-Kai D. Ng

Faculty Publications

One of the Web information Retrieval (IR) problems these days is to identify redundant information that exist in (replicated) Web documents. These documents can easily be found in several forms, such as documents in different versions, small documents combined with others to form a larger document, etc. As the Web is becoming more and more popular, the number of documents on the Web is increasing on a daily basis, and filtering redundant ones among this huge number of documents becomes a more difficult and an urgent task. As one of the solutions to this problem, we present a new method …

Fast-Converging Tatonnement Algorithms For The Market Problem, R Cole, L Fleischer Aug 2007

Fast-Converging Tatonnement Algorithms For The Market Problem, R Cole, L Fleischer

Computer Science Technical Reports

Why might markets tend toward and remain near equilibrium prices? In an effort to shed light on this question from an algorithmic perspective, this paper defines and analyzes two simple tatonnement algorithms that differ from previous algorithms that have been subject to asymptotic analysis in three significant respects: the price update for a good depends only on the price, demand, and supply for that good, and on no other information; the price update for each good occurs distributively and asynchronously; the algorithms work (and the analyses hold) from an arbitrary starting point. Our algorithm introduces a new and natural update …

Risk Assessment In Early Software Design Based On The Software Function-Failure Design Method, Jayson P. Vucovich, Robert B. Stone, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Irem Y. Tumer

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Potential software failures present a sizable risk element in the design and development of many systems. In this paper, we augment the Software Function-Failure Design method, which is capable of predicting potential software failures in the very early stages of design, with the Risk in Early Design technique. This synergistic combination allows a risk assessment to be conducted at an early time in the software development process when traditional techniques are not applicable. The results are concise risk statements regarding the potential failure of functionalities with likelihood and consequence quantifications that can be used as part of a risk management …

A Supply Chain Design Model With Unreliable Supply, Lian Qi, Zuo-Jun Max Shen Aug 2007

A Supply Chain Design Model With Unreliable Supply, Lian Qi, Zuo-Jun Max Shen

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Uncertainties abound within a supply chain and have big impacts on its performance. We propose an integrated model for a three-tiered supply chain network with one supplier, one or more facilities and retailers. This model takes into consideration the unreliable aspects of a supply chain. the properties of the optimal solution to the model are analyzed to reveal the impacts of supply uncertainty on supply chain design decisions. We also propose a general solution algorithm for this model. Computational experience is presented and discussed.

Ontology Aware Software Service Agents: Meeting Ordinary User Needs On The Semantic Web, Muhammed Jassem Al Muhammed Aug 2007

Ontology Aware Software Service Agents: Meeting Ordinary User Needs On The Semantic Web, Muhammed Jassem Al Muhammed

Theses and Dissertations

To achieve the dream of the semantic web, it must be possible for ordinary users to invoke services. It is clear that users need simple-to-invoke-and-use services. This dissertation offers an ontological approach to declaratively create services that users can invoke using free-form, natural-language-like specifications. Our approach uses task ontologies as foundational knowledge. A task ontology consists of a domain ontology and a process ontology. The domain ontology encodes domain information such as possible constraints and instances in terms of object sets, relationship sets among these object sets, and operations over values in object sets and relationship sets. The process ontology …

A Computational Chemistry Study Of Spin Traps., Jacob Fosso-Tande Aug 2007

A Computational Chemistry Study Of Spin Traps., Jacob Fosso-Tande

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many defects in physiological processes are due to free radical damage: reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, and hydroxyl radicals have been implicated in the parthenogenesis of cancer, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatoid arthritis. We herein characterize the phenyl-N-ter-butyl nitrone (PBN) type spin traps in conjunction with the most studied dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) type spin traps using the hydroxyl radical. In this study, theoretical calculations are carried out on the two main types of spin traps (DMPO and PBN) at the density functional theory level (DFT). The energies of the optimized structures, hyperfine calculations in gaseous and aqueous phases of the spin traps …

A Comparison Of Class Diagram Construction At Three Different Phases Of Compilation, Robert Bailey Iii Aug 2007

A Comparison Of Class Diagram Construction At Three Different Phases Of Compilation, Robert Bailey Iii

All Theses

In maintaining, designing, and testing of OO systems, understanding the relationships between the classes and corresponding objects is imperative. Class diagrams provide program visualization that promotes easier understanding of large systems. Class diagrams are especially helpful when systems become too large to conceptualize without automated graphical illustration. There are many tools available to software developers that permit generation of class diagrams for large scale computing applications, many of which use various parsing approaches to extract information for a class diagram. In this paper, we compare and evaluate three tools that extract information for class diagrams from different phases of the …

An Efficient Asynchronous Peer To Peer Auction Using Yao Oblivious Transfer, Charles Lobo Aug 2007

An Efficient Asynchronous Peer To Peer Auction Using Yao Oblivious Transfer, Charles Lobo

All Theses

Distributed electronic auctions are increasingly preferred over centralized electronic auctions today. The success of peer-to-peer file sharing networks has made distributed electronic auctions a possibility. Due to trust and conflict of interest issues with centralized auctioneer systems, multiple auctioneers in distributed roles are preferred. However, there is a possibility of auctioneer node collusion [16] and auctioneer-bidder collusion and auctioneer-seller collusion in such mechanisms.
To overcome these problems, a new peer-to-peer auction protocol [17] with auctioneers forming auctioneer groups has been proposed. This protocol keeps the auctioneers honest by ensuring that no single auctioneer in the group has absolute control over …

Topology-Aware Transmission Scheduling For Distributed Highway Traffic Monitoring Wireless Sensor Networks, Devang Bagaria Aug 2007

Topology-Aware Transmission Scheduling For Distributed Highway Traffic Monitoring Wireless Sensor Networks, Devang Bagaria

All Theses

Wireless sensor networks have been deployed along highways for traffic monitoring. The thesis studies a set of transmission scheduling methods for optimizing network throughput, message transfer delay, and energy efficiency. Today's traffic monitoring systems are centrally managed. Several studies have envisioned the advantages of distributed traffic management techniques. The thesis is based on previously proposed hierarchical sensor network architecture, for which the routing and transmission scheduling methods are derived.
Wireless sensor networks have a lifetime limited by battery energy of the sensors. The thesis proposes to assign schedules for nodes to transmit and receive packets and turning off their radios …

A Comparative Study On Ontology Generation And Text Clustering Using Vsm, Lsi, And Document Ontology Models, William Taylor Aug 2007

A Comparative Study On Ontology Generation And Text Clustering Using Vsm, Lsi, And Document Ontology Models, William Taylor

All Theses

Although using ontologies to assist information retrieval and text document processing has recently attracted more and more attention, existing ontology-based approaches have not shown advantages over the traditional keywords-based Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) method. This paper proposes an algorithm to extract a concept forest (CF) from a document with the assistance of a natural language ontology, the WordNet lexical database. Using concept forests to represent the semantics of text documents, the semantic similarities of these documents are then measured as the commonalities of their concept forests. Performance studies of text document clustering based on different document similarity measurement methods show …

Performance Of Voip Services On A Docsis Network Targeted By A Denial Of Service Attack, Benjamin Sangster Aug 2007

Performance Of Voip Services On A Docsis Network Targeted By A Denial Of Service Attack, Benjamin Sangster

All Theses

Over 48 million end users worldwide utilize cable modems as their means of accessing the Internet at high speeds. The United States accounts for 54% of those users. Networks which provide access via cable modems utilize Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) as their means of network management. As availability to the Internet increases (especially at high speeds supported by broadband access), so does the opportunity for malicious activity against users utilizing the Internet. Denial-of-service (DoS) attacks are one form of malicious activity and one of the most common. In commonplace Ethernet-based wired networks, a DoS attack requires relatively …

The Spillable Environment: Expanding A Handheld Device's Screen Real Estate And Interactive Capabilities, Jeffrey S. Clement Aug 2007

The Spillable Environment: Expanding A Handheld Device's Screen Real Estate And Interactive Capabilities, Jeffrey S. Clement

Theses and Dissertations

Handheld devices have a limited amount of screen real estate. If a handheld device could take advantage of larger screens, it would create a more powerful user interface and environment. As time progresses, Moore's law predicts that the computational power of handheld devices will increase dramatically in the future, promoting the interaction with a larger screen. Users can then use their peripheral vision to recognize spatial relationships between objects and solve problems more easily with this integrated system. In the spillable environment, the handheld device uses a DiamondTouch Table, a large, touch-sensitive horizontal table, to enhance the viewing environment. When …

Realizing Live Sequence Charts In System Verilog, Hai H. Wang, Shengchao Qin, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Aug 2007

Realizing Live Sequence Charts In System Verilog, Hai H. Wang, Shengchao Qin, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The design of an embedded control system starts with an investigation of properties and behaviors of the process evolving within its environment, and an analysis of the requirement for its safety performance. In early stages, system requirements are often specied as scenarios of behavior using sequence charts for different use cases. This specication must be precise, intuitive and expressive enough to capture different aspects of embedded control systems. As a rather rich and useful extension to the classical message sequence charts, Live Sequence Charts (LSC), which provide a rich collection of constructs for specifying both possible and mandatory behaviors, are …

Linear-Time Algorithms For Edge-Based Problems, Alan Jamieson Aug 2007

Linear-Time Algorithms For Edge-Based Problems, Alan Jamieson

All Dissertations

There is a dearth of algorithms that deal with edge-based problems in trees, specifically algorithms for edge sets that satisfy a particular parameter. The goal of this thesis is to create a methodology for designing algorithms for these edge-based problems. We will present a variant of the Wimer method [Wimer et al. 1985] [Wimer 1987] that can handle edge properties. We call this variant the Wimer edge variant. The thesis is divided into three sections, the first being a chapter devoted to defining and discussing the Wimer edge variant in depth, showing how to develop an algorithm using this variant, …

Vertex-Edge And Edge-Vertex Parameters In Graphs, Jason Lewis Aug 2007

Vertex-Edge And Edge-Vertex Parameters In Graphs, Jason Lewis

All Dissertations

The majority of graph theory research on parameters involved with domination, independence, and irredundance has focused on either sets of vertices or sets of edges; for example, sets of vertices that dominate all other vertices or sets of edges that dominate all other edges. There has been very little research on ``mixing'' vertices and edges. We investigate several new and several little-studied parameters, including vertex-edge domination, vertex-edge irredundance, vertex-edge independence, edge-vertex domination, edge-vertex irredundance, and edge-vertex independence.

Text Identification By Example, Daniel Joseph Preece Aug 2007

Text Identification By Example, Daniel Joseph Preece

Theses and Dissertations

The World-Wide Web contains a lot of information and reading through the web pages to collect this information is tedious, time consuming and error prone. Users need an automated solution for extracting or highlighting the data that they are interested in. Building a regular expression to match the text they are interested in will automate the process, but regular expressions are hard to create and certainly are not feasible for non-programmers to construct. Text Identification by Example (TIBE) makes it easier for end-users to harvest information from the web and other text documents. With TIBE, training text classifiers from user-selected …

Optimal Pipeline Decomposition And Adaptive Network Mapping To Support Distributed Remote Visualization, Michelle Zhu, Qishi Wu, Nageswara S.V. Rao, Sitharama Iyengar

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper discusses algorithmic and implementation aspects of a distributed remote visualization system that optimally decomposes and adaptively maps the visualization pipeline to a wide-area shared or dedicated network. The first node of the system typically generates or stores raw data sets, and a remote client resides on the last node equipped with a display device ranging from a personal desktop to a powerwall. Intermediate nodes include workstations, clusters, or rendering engines, which can be located anywhere on the network. We employ a regression method to estimate the effective bandwidth of a transport path. Based on link measurements, node characteristics, …
