Neural Network Based Decentralized Controls Of Large Scale Power Systems, Wenxin Liu, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Mariesa Crow, Li Liu, David A. Cartes
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a suite of neural network (NN) based decentralized controller designs for large scale power systems' generators, one is for the excitation control and the other is for the steam valve control. Though the control inputs are calculated using local signals, the transient and overall system stability can be guaranteed. NNs are used to approximate the unknown and/or imprecise dynamics of the local power system dynamics and the inter-connection terms, thus the requirements for exact system parameters are relaxed. Simulation studies with a three-machine power system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller designs.
Back-Up Server For Computer Science Department, Victoria Gaylord
Back-Up Server For Computer Science Department, Victoria Gaylord
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Because Western Kentucky University does not maintain a back-up system for its departments, the Computer Science Department has implemented its own. Using Bacula software on a Unix server, files from faculty desktop computers and servers are backed up to a tape drive on a daily basis. The server is protected from outside threats with a carefully configured firewall script. This paper explains how both the firewall and the back-up software were implemented and how successful that implementation has been.

A Software-Based Trust Framework For Distributed Industrial Management Systems, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, Mohammad Zulkernine, Steve Wolfe
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
One of the major problems in industrial security management is that most organizations or enterprises do not provide adequate guidelines or well-defined policy with respect to trust management, and trust is still an afterthought in most security engineering projects. With the increase of handheld devices, managers of business organizations tend to use handheld devices to access the information systems. However, the connection or access to an information system requires appropriate level of trust. In this paper, we present a flexible, manageable, and configurable software-based trust framework for the handheld devices of mangers to access distributed information systems. The presented framework …
A Robust Method For Multiple Face Tracking Using Kalman Filter, Zaheer Shaik
A Robust Method For Multiple Face Tracking Using Kalman Filter, Zaheer Shaik
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A robust method for tracking faces of multiple people moving in a scene using a Kalman filter is proposed. This method overcomes the problem of partial and total occlusion for a short period. The method uses a combination of face detection and cloth matching to track and differentiate between people. A Template matching technique for face and a non-parametric distribution for cloth are used. Face templates are obtained from the first frame of a video sequence by applying the Viola-Jones face detection method. Cloth color distribution is obtained from people's clothes, assuming that the bodies move along with the faces. …
Distributed Cluster-Based Outlier Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Swetha Gali
Distributed Cluster-Based Outlier Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Swetha Gali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks find several potential applications in a variety of fields, such as environmental monitoring and control, battlefields, surveillance, smart buildings, human health monitoring, etc. These sensor networks consist of a large number of very tiny, inexpensive, and low power sensor nodes, which are deployed in a variety of harsh environments that may result in the sensor data getting corrupted. It is thus critical to detect and report these abnormal values in the sensor data, in order to have a better understanding of the monitored environment. Detection of the abnormal values is of special interest for the sensor network …

Performance Of Network-Coding In Multi-Rate Wireless Environments For Multicast Applications, Luiz F. M. Viera, Archan Misra, Mario Gerla
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper investigates the interaction between net-work coding and link-layer transmission rate diversity in multi-hop wireless networks. By appropriately mixing data packets at intermediate nodes, network coding allows a single multicast flow to achieve higher throughput to a set of receivers. Broadcast applications can also exploit link-layer rate diversity, whereby individual nodes can transmit at faster rates at the expense of corresponding smaller coverage area. We first demonstrate how combining rate-diversity with network coding can provide a larger capacity for data dissemination of a single multicast flow, and how consideration of rate diversity is critical for maximizing system throughput. We …

Statistics And Analysis Tools For A Computer- Supported Collaborative Learning System, L. D. Miller, Adam Eck, Leen-Kiat Soh, Hong Jiang
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Traditional computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) systems focus primarily on facilitating group work amongst students, providing several different modes for different types of communication, from chatting applications to shared whiteboards. The power of a good CSCL system, in addition to the interactions it supports, lies with the data the system can gather from those interactions (both relational and content-based). Thus, we have developed the Intelligent Multiagent Infrastructure for Distributed System in Education (I-MINDS), a CSCL system built on the Microsoft ConferenceXP platform that tracks real-time data to support student learning and classroom management. I-MINDS facilitates (1) student-student interactions through message dialogs, …
Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian, Jason Sawin, Atanas Rountev
Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian, Jason Sawin, Atanas Rountev
Publications and Research
Modern Java languages introduce several new features that offer significant improvements over older Java technology. In this article we consider the new enum construct, which provides language support for enumerated types. Prior to recent Java languages, programmers needed to employ various patterns (e.g., the weak enum pattern) to compensate for the absence of enumerated types in Java. Unfortunately, these compensation patterns lack several highly-desirable properties of the enum construct, most notably, type safety. We present a novel fully-automated approach for transforming legacy Java code to use the new enumeration construct. This semantics-preserving approach increases type safety, produces code that is …
A Multitude Of Opinions: Mining Online Rating Data, Hady Wirawan Lauw, Ee Peng Lim
A Multitude Of Opinions: Mining Online Rating Data, Hady Wirawan Lauw, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online rating system is a popular feature of Web 2.0 applications. It typically involves a set of reviewers assigning rating scores (based on various evaluation criteria) to a set of objects. We identify two objectives for research on online rating data, namely achieving effective evaluation of objects and learning behaviors of reviewers/objects. These two objectives have conventionally been pursued separately. We argue that the future research direction should focus on the integration of these two objectives, as well as the integration between rating data and other types of data.
Efficient Discovery Of Frequent Approximate Sequential Patterns, Feida Zhu, Xifeng Yan, Jiawei Han, Philip S. Yu
Efficient Discovery Of Frequent Approximate Sequential Patterns, Feida Zhu, Xifeng Yan, Jiawei Han, Philip S. Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose an efficient algorithm for mining frequent approximate sequential patterns under the Hamming distance model. Our algorithm gains its efficiency by adopting a "break-down-and-build-up" methodology. The "breakdown" is based on the observation that all occurrences of a frequent pattern can be classified into groups, which we call strands. We developed efficient algorithms to quickly mine out all strands by iterative growth. In the "build-up" stage, these strands are grouped up to form the support sets from which all approximate patterns would be identified. A salient feature of our algorithm is its ability to grow the frequent patterns by iteratively …

Mining Modal Scenarios From Execution Traces, David Lo, Shahar Maoz, Siau-Cheng Khoo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Specification mining is a dynamic analysis process aimed at automatically inferring suggested specifications of a program from its execution traces. We describe a method, a framework, and a tool, for mining inter-object scenario-based specifications in the form of a UML2-compliant variant of Damm and Harel's Live Sequence Charts (LSC), which extends the classical partial order semantics of sequence diagrams with temporal liveness and symbolic class level lifelines, in order to generate compact and expressive specifications. Moreover, we use previous research work and tools developed for LSC to visualize, analyze, manipulate, test, and thus evaluate the scenario-based specifications we mine. Our …

Flexible Access Control To Jpeg 2000 Image Code-Streams, Yongdong Wu, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
JPEG 2000 is an international standard for still image compression in the 21st century. Part 8 of the standard, named JPSEC, is concerned with all the security aspects, in particular to access control and authentication. This paper presents a novel access control scheme for JPEG 2000 image code-streams. The proposed scheme is secure against collusion attacks and highly efficient. The scheme is also very flexible, allowing access control to JPEG 2000 image code-streams according to any combination of resolution, quality layer and region of interest. The "encrypt once, decrypt many ways" property of our scheme is designed to work seamlessly …
