Learning Multiple Languages In Groups, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber Nov 2007

Learning Multiple Languages In Groups, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider a variant of Gold’s learning paradigm where a learner receives as input different languages (in the form of one text where all input languages are interleaved). Our goal is to explore the situation when a more “coarse” classification of input languages is possible, whereas more refined classification is not. More specifically, we answer the following question: under which conditions, a learner, being fed different languages, can produce grammars covering all input languages, but cannot produce grammars covering input languages for any . We also consider a variant of this task, where each of the output grammars may not …

Electrostatic Force Microscopy Studies Of Boron-Doped Diamond Films, Santosh Gupta, O. A. Williams, Eric W. Bohannan Nov 2007

Electrostatic Force Microscopy Studies Of Boron-Doped Diamond Films, Santosh Gupta, O. A. Williams, Eric W. Bohannan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Much has been learned from electrochemical properties of boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin films synthesized using microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition about the factors influencing electrochemical activity, but some characteristics are still not entirely understood, such as its electrical conductivity in relation with microscale structure. Therefore, to effectively utilize these materials, understanding both the microscopic structure and physical (electrical, in particular) properties becomes indispensable. in addition to topography using atomic force microscopy, electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) in phase mode measuring the long-range electrostatic force gradients, helps to map the electrical conductivity heterogeneity of boron-doped micro-/nanocrystalline diamond surfaces. the mapping of electrical …

Multi-Period Combinatorial Auction Mechanism For Distributed Resource Allocation And Scheduling, Hoong Chuin Lau, Shih-Fen Cheng, Thin Yin Leong, Jong Han Park, Zhengyi Zhao Nov 2007

Multi-Period Combinatorial Auction Mechanism For Distributed Resource Allocation And Scheduling, Hoong Chuin Lau, Shih-Fen Cheng, Thin Yin Leong, Jong Han Park, Zhengyi Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider the problem of resource allocation and scheduling where information and decisions are decentralized, and our goal is to propose a market mechanism that allows resources from a central resource pool to be allocated to distributed decision makers (agents) that seek to optimize their respective scheduling goals. We propose a generic combinatorial auction mechanism that allows agents to competitively bid for the resources needed in a multi-period setting, regardless of the respective scheduling problem faced by the agent, and show how agents can design optimal bidding strategies to respond to price adjustment strategies from the auctioneer. We apply our …

The Price Of Stability In Selfish Scheduling Games, Lucas Agussurja, Hoong Chuin Lau Nov 2007

The Price Of Stability In Selfish Scheduling Games, Lucas Agussurja, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Game theory has gained popularity as an approach to analysing and understanding distributed systems with selfinterested agents. Central to game theory is the concept of Nash equilibrium as a stable state (solution) of the system, which comes with a price - the loss in efficiency. The quantification of the efficiency loss is one of the main research concerns. In this paper, we study the quality and computational characteristic of the best Nash equilibrium in two selfish scheduling models: the congestion model and the sequencing model. In particular, we present the following results: (1) In the congestion model: first, the best …

Race: A Robust Adaptive Caching Strategy For Buffer Cache, Yifeng Zhu, Hong Jiang Nov 2007

Race: A Robust Adaptive Caching Strategy For Buffer Cache, Yifeng Zhu, Hong Jiang

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

While many block replacement algorithms for buffer caches have been proposed to address the well-known drawbacks of the LRU algorithm, they are not robust and cannot maintain an consistent performance improvement over all workloads. This paper proposes a novel and simple replacement scheme, called RACE (Robust Adaptive buffer Cache management schemE), which differentiates the locality of I/O streams by actively detecting access patterns inherently exhibited in two correlated spaces: the discrete block space of program contexts from which I/O requests are issued and the continuous block space within files to which I/O requests are addressed. This scheme combines global I/O …

Machine-Assisted Proof Support For Validation Beyond Simulink, Chunqing Chen, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun Nov 2007

Machine-Assisted Proof Support For Validation Beyond Simulink, Chunqing Chen, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Simulink is popular in industry for modeling and simulating embedded systems. It is deficient to handle requirements of high-level assurance and timing analysis. Previously, we showed the idea of applying Timed Interval Calculus (TIC) to complement Simulink. In this paper, we develop machine-assisted proof support for Simulink models represented in TIC. The work is based on a generic theorem prover, Prototype Verification System (PVS). The TIC specifications of both Simulink models and requirements are transformed to PVS specifications automatically. Verification can be carried out at interval level with a high level of automation. Analysis of continuous and discrete behaviors is …

Analyzing Gene Relationships For Down Syndrome With Labeled Transition Graphs, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Eric G. Mercer, Neha Rungta, Quinn O. Snell, Randall J. Roper Nov 2007

Analyzing Gene Relationships For Down Syndrome With Labeled Transition Graphs, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Eric G. Mercer, Neha Rungta, Quinn O. Snell, Randall J. Roper

Faculty Publications

The relationship between changes in gene expression and physical characteristics associated with Down syndrome is not well understood. Chromosome 21 genes interact with nonchromosome 21 genes to produce Down syndrome characteristics. This indirect influence, however, is difficult to empirically define due to the number, size, and complexity of the involved gene regulatory networks. This work links chromosome 21 genes to non-chromosome 21 genes known to interact in a Down syndrome phenotype through a reachability analysis of labeled transition graphs extracted from published gene regulatory network databases. The analysis provides new relations in a recently discovered link between a specific gene …

Reasoning About The Behavior Of Aspect-Oriented Programs, Neelam Soundarajan, Raffi Khatchadourian, Johan Dovland Nov 2007

Reasoning About The Behavior Of Aspect-Oriented Programs, Neelam Soundarajan, Raffi Khatchadourian, Johan Dovland

Publications and Research

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) has become increasingly popular over the last few years. At the same time, reasoning about the behavior of these programs poses serious challenges. In this paper, we present a rely-guarantee approach to such reasoning. The rely-guarantee approach has proven useful in reasoning about concurrent and distributed programs. We show that some of the key problems encountered in reasoning about aspect-oriented programs are similar to those encountered in reasoning about concurrent programs; and that the rely-guarantee approach, appropriately modified, helps address these problems. We illustrate our approach with a simple example.

Wikipedia is presently the largest free-and-open online encyclopedia collaboratively edited and maintained by volunteers. While Wikipedia offers full-text search to its users, the accuracy of its relevance-based search can be compromised by poor quality articles edited by non-experts and inexperienced contributors. In this paper, we propose a framework that re-ranks Wikipedia search results considering article quality. We develop two quality measurement models, namely Basic and PeerReview, to derive article quality based on co-authoring data gathered from articles' edit history. Compared with Wikipedia's full-text search engine, Google and Wikiseek, our experimental results showed that (i) quality-only ranking produced by PeerReview gives …

Modeling Semantics In Composite Web Service Requests By Utility Elicitation, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller Nov 2007

Modeling Semantics In Composite Web Service Requests By Utility Elicitation, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

When meeting the challenges in automatic and semi-automatic Web service composition, capturing the user’s service demand and preferences is as important as knowing what the services can do. This paper discusses the idea of semantic service requests for composite services, and presents a multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT) based model of composite service requests. Service requests are modeled as user preferences and constraints. Two preference structures, additive independence and generalized additive independence, are utilized in calculating the expected utilities of service composition outcomes. The model is also based on an iterative and incremental scheme meant to better capture requirements in accordance …

Comment-Oriented Blog Summarization By Sentence Extraction, Meishan Hu, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun Nov 2007

Comment-Oriented Blog Summarization By Sentence Extraction, Meishan Hu, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Much existing research on blogs focused on posts only, ignoring their comments. Our user study conducted on summarizing blog posts, however, showed that reading comments does change one's understanding about blog posts. In this research, we aim to extract representative sentences from a blog post that best represent the topics discussed among its comments. The proposed solution first derives representative words from comments and then selects sentences containing representative words. The representativeness of words is measured using ReQuT (i.e., Reader, Quotation, and Topic). Evaluated on human labeled sentences, ReQuT together with summation-based sentence selection showed promising results.

Light-Weight Encryption Schemes For Multimedia Data, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Nov 2007

Light-Weight Encryption Schemes For Multimedia Data, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to the pervasiveness of high-speed networks and multimedia communications and storage, the demand for highspeed cryptosystems is ever increasing. It is widely believed that there is a tradeoff between speed and security in cryptosystem design. No existing encryption algorithms are both fast enough for high-speed operation and sufficiently secure to withstand powerful cryptanalysis. In this paper, we propose and analyze a generic construction of high-speed encryption schemes. Our solution is based on the fact that there exist secure but relatively slow block ciphers, e. g. AES, and super-fast but relatively weaker stream ciphers. We then combine a secure block …

Interactive storytelling, emerging with virtual reality technology, has attracted a lot of research interests in recent years. In order to bridge the gap between story generation and story presentation, some hybrid narrative models are raised. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid interactive storytelling architecture S-MADE. It combines the story plot generation and character performance through goal execution and decomposition mechanism. Fuzzy Cognitive Goal Net (FCGN) is a goal modeling tool for modeling the story scenario and character behaviors. The goal decomposition algorithm enables for director agent to dispatch acts to characters easily. With this system, dynamic storylines as …

Advances And Challenges With Data Broadcasting In Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Junaid Qadir, Joo Ghee Lim, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wireless mesh networks have become a promising means to provide low-cost broadband access. Many WMN applications require broadcasting data (IPTV etc.) over the WMN. This article studies how efficient data broadcast, measured in terms of broadcast latency, can be realized by exploiting two features of WMNs: the use of multiple transmission rates at the link layer and the use of multiple radio interfaces on each node. We demonstrate that by exploiting these features, broadcast latency can be reduced severalfold compared to the current default practice in wireless LANs of using the lowest transmission rate for broadcast traffic. We also discuss …

Context-Aware Statistical Debugging: From Bug Predictors To Faulty Control Flow Paths, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su Nov 2007

Context-Aware Statistical Debugging: From Bug Predictors To Faulty Control Flow Paths, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effective bug localization is important for realizing automated debugging. One attractive approach is to apply statistical techniques on a collection of evaluation profiles of program properties to help localize bugs. Previous research has proposed various specialized techniques to isolate certain program predicates as bug predictors. However, because many bugs may not be directly associated with these predicates, these techniques are often ineffective in localizing bugs. Relevant control flow paths that may contain bug locations are more informative than stand-alone predicates for discovering and understanding bugs. In this paper, we propose an approach to automatically generate such faulty control flow paths …

Designing The Market Game For A Commodity Trading Simulation, Shih-Fen Cheng Nov 2007

Designing The Market Game For A Commodity Trading Simulation, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose to design a market game that (a) can be used in modeling and studying commodity trading scenarios, and (b) can be used in capturing human traders' behaviors. Specifically, we demonstrate the usefulness of this commodity trading game in a single-commodity futures trading scenario. A pilot experiment was run with a mixture of human traders and an autonomous agent that emulates the aggregatedmarket condition, with the assumption that this autonomous agent would hint each of its action through a public announcement. We show that the information collected from this simulation can be used to extract the …

Sloque: Slot-Based Query Expansion For Complex Questions, Maggy Anastasia Suryanto, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searching answers to complex questions is a challenging IR task. In this paper, we examine the use of query templates with semantic slots to formulate slot-based queries. These queries have query terms assigned to entity and relationship slots. We develop several query expansion methods for slot-based queries so as to improve their retrieval effectiveness on a document collection. Each method consists of a combination of term scoring scheme, term scoring formula, and term assignment scheme. Our preliminary experiments evaluate these different slot-based query expansion methods on a collection of news documents, and conclude that:(1) slot-based queries yield better retrieval accuracy compared …

An Information-Sharing Based Anti-Phishing System, Yueqing Cheng, Zhen Yuan, Lei Ma, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents the design of an informationsharing based or server-assisted anti-phishing system. The system follows a client-server architecture and makes decision based on not only client side heuristics but also collective information from multiple clients. When visiting a web site, a client side proxy, installed as a plug-in to a browser, decides on the legitimacy of the web site based on a combination of white list, black list and heuristics. In case the client side proxy does not have sufficient information to make a clear judgment, it reports the suspicious site to a central server which has access to …

Visualizing Morphometric Data Of Vasculatures, Thomas Wischgoll Oct 2007

Visualizing Morphometric Data Of Vasculatures, Thomas Wischgoll

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Volume visualization is a common, very well-established visualization technique for volumetric data sets. Numerous advancements have been proposed and sophisticated improvements have been implemented to produce elaborated renderings that are capable of enhancing details within the volume. However, volume visualization alone is often not sufficient for the application domain. Often times, researchers are interested in accurate measurements extracted from volumetric data to gain further insight of the specimen. These extracted measurements can then be used to generate and visualize a geometric reconstruction of the specimen. The visualization can incorporate additional tools that allow researchers to determine additional measurements of the …

Dynamics Of Step-Climing With Deformable Wheels And Applications For Mobile Robotics, Alexander Wilhelm, William Melek, Jan Huissoon, Christopher M. Clark, Gerd Hirzinger, Norbert Sporer, Matthias Fuchs Oct 2007

Dynamics Of Step-Climing With Deformable Wheels And Applications For Mobile Robotics, Alexander Wilhelm, William Melek, Jan Huissoon, Christopher M. Clark, Gerd Hirzinger, Norbert Sporer, Matthias Fuchs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Wheeled-mobile robots operating in human environments typically encounter small steps. Surmounting steps is normally not considered when determining peak torque needs, yet it can be the maximum requirement. This work looks at the statics and dynamics of this situation to determine the necessary peak torque. It finds that using a dynamic model that includes the wheel elasticity is essential for properly representing a real-world tire. When torque is increased using a step function, energy is stored in the tire-higher tire elasticity eases climbing. Knowledge of this phenomenon could facilitate the use of smaller actuators. The model is numerically integrated and …

Intersection Algorithms Based On Geometric Intervals, Nicholas Stewart North Oct 2007

Intersection Algorithms Based On Geometric Intervals, Nicholas Stewart North

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces new algorithms for solving curve/curve and ray/surface intersections. These algorithms introduce the concept of a geometric interval to extend the technique of Bézier clipping. A geometric interval is used to tightly bound a curve or surface or to contain a point on a curve or surface. Our algorithms retain the desirable characteristics of the Bézier clipping technique such as ease of implementation and the guarantee that all intersections over a given interval will be found. However, these new algorithms generally exhibit cubic convergence, improving on the observed quadratic convergence rate of Bézier clipping. This is achieved without …

Heuristic Weighted Voting, Kristine Perry Monteith Oct 2007

Heuristic Weighted Voting, Kristine Perry Monteith

Theses and Dissertations

Selecting an effective method for combining the votes of classifiers in an ensemble can have a significant impact on the overall classification accuracy an ensemble is able to achieve. With some methods, the ensemble cannot even achieve as high a classification accuracy as the most accurate individual classifying component. To address this issue, we present the strategy of Heuristic Weighted Voting, a technique that uses heuristics to determine the confidence that a classifier has in its predictions on an instance by instance basis. Using these heuristics to weight the votes in an ensemble results in an overall average increase in …

Alternative Splicing: Associating Frequency With Isoforms, Anuradha Roy, Jennifer Leopold, Anne M. Maglia Oct 2007

Alternative Splicing: Associating Frequency With Isoforms, Anuradha Roy, Jennifer Leopold, Anne M. Maglia

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the simplest model of protein production, a gene gives rise to a single protein; DNA is transcribed to form pre-mRNA, which is converted to mRNA by splicing or removing introns. The result is a chain of exons that is translated to form a protein. Alternative splicing of exons may result in the formation of multiple proteins from the same gene sequence. However, not all of these proteins may be functional. Thus, we ask whether we can predict and rank (in order of frequency of occurrence and functional importance) the set of possible proteins for a gene. Herein we describe …
