Multiframe Shift Estimation, Stephen A. Bruckart Mar 2006

Multiframe Shift Estimation, Stephen A. Bruckart

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop a fundamental framework for a new approach to multiframe translational shift estimation in image processing. This thesis sought to create a new multiframe shift estimator, to theoretically prove and experimentally test key properties of it, and to quantify its performance according to several metrics. The new estimator was modeled successfully and was proven to be an unbiased estimator under certain common image noise conditions. Furthermore its performance was shown to be superior to the cross correlation shift estimator, a robust estimator widely used in similar image processing cases, according to several criteria. …

An Estimation Theory Approach To Detection And Ranging Of Obscured Targets In 3-D Ladar Data, Charles R. Burris

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to develop an algorithm to detect obscured images in 3-D LADAR data. The real data used for this research was gathered using a FLASH LADAR system under development at AFRL/SNJM. The system transmits light with a wavelength of 1.55 micrometers and produces 20 128 X 128 temporally resolved images from the return pulse separated by less than 2 nanoseconds in time. New algorithms for estimating the range to a target in 3-D FLASH LADAR data were developed. Results from processing real data are presented and compared to the traditional correlation receiver for extracting ranges …

Learning Real-Time A* Path Planner For Unmanned Air Vehicle Target Sensing, Jason K. Howlett, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael A. Goodrich Mar 2006

Learning Real-Time A* Path Planner For Unmanned Air Vehicle Target Sensing, Jason K. Howlett, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael A. Goodrich

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a path planner for sensing closely-spaced targets from a fixed-wing unmanned air vehicle (UAV) having a specified sensor footprint. The planner is based on the learning real-time A* (LRTA*) search algorithm and produces dynamically feasible paths that accomplish the sensing objectives in the shortest possible distance. A tree of candidate paths that span the area of interest is created by assembling primitive turn and straight sections of a specified step size in a sequential fashion from the starting position of the UAV. An LRTA* search of the tree produces feasible paths any time during its execution and …

Robust Classification Of Eeg Signal For Brain-Computer Interface, Manoj Thulasidas, Cuntai Guan, Jiankang Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We report the implementation of a text input application (speller) based on the P300 event related potential. We obtain high accuracies by using an SVM classifier and a novel feature. These techniques enable us to maintain fast performance without sacrificing the accuracy, thus making the speller usable in an online mode. In order to further improve the usability, we perform various studies on the data with a view to minimizing the training time required. We present data collected from nine healthy subjects, along with the high accuracies (of the order of 95% or more) measured online. We show that the …

Crosscutting Score: An Indicator Metric For Aspect Orientation, Subhajit Datta Mar 2006

Crosscutting Score: An Indicator Metric For Aspect Orientation, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) provides powerful techniques for modeling and implementing enterprise software systems. To leverage its full potential, AOP needs to be perceived in the context of existing methodologies such as Object Oriented Programming (OOP). This paper addresses an important question for AOP practitioners - how to decide whether a component is best modeled as a class or an aspect? Towards that end, we present an indicator metric, the Crosscutting Score and a method for its calculation and interpretation. We will illustrate our approach through a sample calculation.

Publicly Verifiable Ownership Protection For Relational Databases, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng Mar 2006

Publicly Verifiable Ownership Protection For Relational Databases, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today, watermarking techniques have been extended from the multimedia context to relational databases so as to protect the ownership of data even after the data are published or distributed. However, all existing watermarking schemes for relational databases are secret key based, thus require a secret key to be presented in proof of ownership. This means that the ownership can only be proven once to the public (e.g., to the court). After that, the secret key is known to the public and the embedded watermark can be easily destroyed by malicious users. Moreover, most of the existing techniques introduce distortions to …

Agility Measurement Index: A Metric For The Crossroads Of Software Development Methodologies, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software engineering's journey to maturity has been marked by the advent of different development methodologies. While each paradigm has its context and cognoscenti, project teams are often faced with the choice of one approach over another in the grind of delivering software on time and within budget. In this paper, we briefly review the three major techniques of addressing enterprise software development, namely the Waterfall, Unified and Extreme styles. The metric Agility Measurement Index is then proposed, which helps organizations choose the methodology that best suites a particular project.

Threading And Autodocumenting News Videos: A Promising Solution To Rapidly Browse News Topics, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Qing Li Mar 2006

Threading And Autodocumenting News Videos: A Promising Solution To Rapidly Browse News Topics, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Qing Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes the techniques in threading and autodocumenting news stories according to topic themes. Initially, we perform story clustering by exploiting the duality between stories and textual-visual concepts through a co-clustering algorithm. The dependency among stories of a topic is tracked by exploring the textual-visual novelty and redundancy of stories. A novel topic structure that chains the dependencies of stories is then presented to facilitate the fast navigation of the news topic. By pruning the peripheral and redundant news stories in the topic structure, a main thread is extracted for autodocumentary

Caps: Energy-Efficient Processing Of Continuous Aggregate Queries In Sensor Networks, Wen Hu, Archan Misra, Rajiv Shorey Mar 2006

Caps: Energy-Efficient Processing Of Continuous Aggregate Queries In Sensor Networks, Wen Hu, Archan Misra, Rajiv Shorey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we design and evaluate an energy efficient data retrieval architecture for continuous aggregate queries in wireless sensor networks. We show how the modification of precision in one sensor affects the sample-reporting frequency of other sensors, and how the precisions of a group of sensors may be collectively modified to achieve the target quality of information (QoI) with higher energy-efficiency. The proposed collective adaptive precision setting (CAPS) architecture is then extended to exploit the observed temporal correlation among successive sensor samples for even greater energy efficiency. Detailed simulations with synthetic and real data traces demonstrate how the combination …

Creation Of Crm Selection Methodology For The Aerospace & Defense Industry, Reggie Arsenault Feb 2006

Creation Of Crm Selection Methodology For The Aerospace & Defense Industry, Reggie Arsenault

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Aerospace and Defense Industry is rebounding from one of the worst financial downturns in the history of the market. What has emerged is a realization that the future for Aerospace and Defense manufacturing requires a focus on “services†versus supplying high quality products alone. In order to support such a complex offering of products and services, manufacturing organizations in the Aerospace and Defense Industry must migrate to a customer-centric business structure within their people, processes, and tools. To support the shift, companies must deploy a robust, enterprise, CRM (Customer Relationship Management) technology. The difficulty is in the selection process …

Using Augmented Virtuality To Improve Human-Robot Interactions, Curtis W. Nielsen Feb 2006

Using Augmented Virtuality To Improve Human-Robot Interactions, Curtis W. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

Mobile robots can be used in situations and environments that are distant from an operator. In order for an operator to control a robot effectively he or she requires an understanding of the environment and situation around the robot. Since the robot is at a remote distant from the operator and cannot be directly observed, the information necessary for an operator to develop an understanding or awareness of the robot's situation comes from the user interface. The usefulness of the interface depends on the manner in which the information from the remote environment is presented. Conventional interfaces for interacting with …

Support For Xml Markup Of Image-Based Electronic Editions, Alex Dekhtyar, Ionut E. Iacob, Jerzy W. Jaromczyk, Kevin Kiernan, Neil Moore, Dorothy Carr Porter

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Image-based electronic editions enable researchers to view and study in an electronic environment historical manuscript images intricately linked to edition, transcript, glossary and apparatus files. Building image-based electronic editions poses a two-fold challenge. For humanities scholars, it is important to be able to use image and text to successfully encode the desired features of the manuscripts. Computer Scientists must find mechanisms for representing markup in its association both with the images, text and other auxiliary files and for making the representation available for efficient querying. This paper addresses the architecture of one such solution, that uses efficient data structures to …

A Binary Data Stream Scripting Language, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Lihua Wang Feb 2006

A Binary Data Stream Scripting Language, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Lihua Wang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Any file is fundamentally a binary data stream. A practical solution was achieved to interpret binary data stream. A new scripting language named Data Format Scripting Language (DFSL) was developed to describe the physical layout of the data in a structural, more intelligible way. On the basis of the solution, a generic software application was implemented; it parses various binary data streams according to their respective DFSL scripts and generates human-readable result and XML document for data sharing. Our solution helps eliminate the error-prone low-level programming, especially in the hardware devices or network protocol development/debugging processes.

Allocating Non-Real-Time And Soft Real-Time Jobs In Multiclusters, Ligang He, Stephen A. Jarvis, Daniel P. Spooner, Hong Jiang, Donna N. Dillenberger, Graham R. Nudd

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper addresses workload allocation techniques for two types of sequential jobs that might be found in multicluster systems, namely, non-real-time jobs and soft real-time jobs. Two workload allocation strategies, the Optimized mean Response Time (ORT) and the Optimized mean Miss Rate (OMR), are developed by establishing and numerically solving two optimization equation sets. The ORT strategy achieves an optimized mean response time for non-real-time jobs, while the OMR strategy obtains an optimized mean miss rate for soft real-time jobs over multiple clusters. Both strategies take into account average system behaviors (such as the mean arrival rate of jobs) in …

Geometric Restrictions On Producible Polygonal Protein Chains, Erik D. Demaine, Stefan Langerman, Joseph O'Rourke Feb 2006

Geometric Restrictions On Producible Polygonal Protein Chains, Erik D. Demaine, Stefan Langerman, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Fixed-angle polygonal chains in three dimensions serve as an interesting model of protein backbones. Here we consider such chains produced inside a "machine" modeled crudely as a cone, and examine the constraints this model places on the producible chains. We call this notion producible, and prove as our main result that a chain whose maximum turn angle is α is producible in a cone of half-angle ≥ α if and only if the chain is flattenable, that is, the chain can be reconfigured without self-intersection to lie flat in a plane. This result establishes that two seemingly disparate classes of …

Observed Web Robot Behavior On Decaying Web Subsites, Joan A. Smith, Frank Mccown Ph.D., Michael L. Nelson Feb 2006

Observed Web Robot Behavior On Decaying Web Subsites, Joan A. Smith, Frank Mccown Ph.D., Michael L. Nelson

Faculty Research and Publications

We describe the observed crawling patterns of various search engines (including Google, Yahoo and MSN) as they traverse a series of web subsites whose contents decay at predetermined rates. We plot the progress of the crawlers through the subsites, and their behaviors regarding the various file types included in the web subsites. We chose decaying subsites because we were originally interested in tracking the implication of using search engine caches for digital preservation. However, some of the crawling behaviors themselves proved to be interesting and have implications on using a search engine as an interface to a digital library.

Evaluation And Illustration Of A Free Software (Fs) Tool For Wireless Network Monitoring And Security, Victor A. Clincy, Krithi Sitaram Ajay

Faculty Articles

Wireless communication provides users many benefits such as portability, flexibility, reduced hardware need and lower installation costs. Wireless local area networks (WLANs) for example allow users the ability to carry their laptops from place to place without any physical wires and without losing network connectivity. However, some amount of security risk is always associated with wireless networks. The most significant security risk for wireless technology is the potential outsiders have in gaining access to the communications medium, the communications medium being the air waves. Though WLANs provide the users with the option of roaming, this convenience is facilitated by broadcasting packets …

Path Planning Algorithms Under The Link-Distance Metric, David Phillip Wagner Feb 2006

Path Planning Algorithms Under The Link-Distance Metric, David Phillip Wagner

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The Traveling Salesman Problem and the Shortest Path Problem are famous problems in computer science which have been well studied when the objective is measured using the Euclidean distance. Here we examine these geometric problems under a different set of optimization criteria. Rather than considering the total distance traversed by a path, this thesis looks at reducing the number of times a turn is made along that path, or equivalently, at reducing the number of straight lines in the path. Minimizing this objective value, known as the link-distance, is useful in situations where continuing in a given direction is cheap, …

Ceft: A Cost-Effective, Fault-Tolerant Parallel Virtual File System, Yifeng Zhu, Hong Jiang Feb 2006

Ceft: A Cost-Effective, Fault-Tolerant Parallel Virtual File System, Yifeng Zhu, Hong Jiang

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The vulnerability of computer nodes due to component failures is a critical issue for cluster-based file systems. This paper studies the development and deployment of mirroring in cluster-based parallel virtual file systems to provide fault tolerance and analyzes the tradeoffs between the performance and the reliability in the mirroring scheme. It presents the design and implementation of CEFT, a scalable RAID-10 style file system based on PVFS, and proposes four novel mirroring protocols depending on whether the mirroring operations are server-driven or client-driven, whether they are asynchronous or synchronous. The comparisons of their write performances, measured in a real cluster, …

Energy Efficiency And Capacity For Tcp Traffic In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Shorey, Rajeev Gupta, Archan Misra Feb 2006

Energy Efficiency And Capacity For Tcp Traffic In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Shorey, Rajeev Gupta, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study the performance metrics associated with TCP-regulated traffic in multi-hop, wireless networks that use a common physical channel (e.g., IEEE 802.11). In contrast to earlier analyses, we focus simultaneously on two key operating metrics—the energy efficiency and the transport-layer (TCP) throughput. Using analysis and simulations, we show how these metrics are strongly influenced by the radio transmission range of individual nodes. Due to tradeoffs between the individual packet transmission energy and the likelihood of retransmissions, the total energy consumption is a convex function of the number of hops (and hence, of the transmission range). On the other hand, the …

Scalable Authentication Of Mpeg-4 Streams, Yongdong Wu, Robert H. Deng Feb 2006

Scalable Authentication Of Mpeg-4 Streams, Yongdong Wu, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents three scalable and efficient schemes for authenticating MPEG-4 streams: the Flat Authentication Scheme, the Progressive Authentication Scheme, and the Hierarchical Authentication Scheme. All the schemes allow authentication of MPEG-4 streams over lossy networks by integrating seamlessly digital signatures and erasure correction coding with MPEG-4's fine granular scalability. A prominent feature of our schemes is their "sign once, verify many ways" property, i.e., they generate only one digital signature per compressed MPEG-4 object group, but allow clients to verify the authenticity of any down-scaled version of the original signed object group.
