Active Security Mechanisms For Wireless Sensor Networks And Energy Optimization For Passive Security Routing, Lydia Ray Jan 2005

Active Security Mechanisms For Wireless Sensor Networks And Energy Optimization For Passive Security Routing, Lydia Ray

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Wireless sensor networks consisting of numerous tiny low power autonomous sensor nodes provide us with the remarkable ability to remotely view and interact with the previously unobservable physical world. However, incorporating computation intensive security measures in sensor networks with limited resources is a challenging research issue. The objective of our thesis is to explore different security aspects of sensor networks and provide novel solutions for significant problems. We classify security mechanisms into two categories - active category and passive category. The problem of providing a secure communication infrastructure among randomly deployed sensor nodes requires active security measurements. Key pre-distribution is …

Lad: Localization Anomaly Detection For Wireless Sensor Networks, Wenliang Du, Lei Fang, Peng Ning Jan 2005

Lad: Localization Anomaly Detection For Wireless Sensor Networks, Wenliang Du, Lei Fang, Peng Ning

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), sensors ’ locations play a critical role in many applications. Having a GPS receiver on every sensor node is costly. In the past, a number of location discovery (localization) schemes have been proposed. Most of these schemes share a common feature: they use some special nodes, called beacon nodes, which are assumed to know their own locations (e.g., through GPS receivers or manual configuration). Other sensors discover their locations based on the reference information provided by these beacon nodes. Most of the beacon-based localization schemes assume a benign environment, where all beacon nodes are supposed …

A State-Free Data Delivery Protocol For Multihop Wireless Sensor Networks, Dazhi Chen, Jing Deng, Pramod K. Varshney Jan 2005

A State-Free Data Delivery Protocol For Multihop Wireless Sensor Networks, Dazhi Chen, Jing Deng, Pramod K. Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

A novel, state-free, and competition-based data delivery protocol, called State-free Implicit Forwarding (SIF), is proposed for multihop wireless sensor networks. The SIF protocol assumes moderate node density and distance-to-sink awareness. The state-free feature of SIF makes it robust to high network dynamics. SIF also combines the tasks of routing and MAC, via cross-layer design, to simplify the complexity of the protocol stack in sensors and to save precious network resources. Simulation results are presented to show that SIF performs better than some previously proposed protocols for data delivery in terms of communication overhead, packet delivery ratio, and average packet delay.

Reliability-Centric High-Level Synthesis, S. Tosun, N. Mansouri, E. Arvas, Mahmut Kandemir, Yuan Xie Jan 2005

Reliability-Centric High-Level Synthesis, S. Tosun, N. Mansouri, E. Arvas, Mahmut Kandemir, Yuan Xie

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Importance of addressing soft errors in both safety critical applications and commercial consumer products is increasing, mainly due to ever shrinking geometries, higher-density circuits, and employment of power-saving techniques such as voltage scaling and component shut-down. As a result, it is becoming necessary to treat reliability as a first-class citizen in system design. In particular, reliability decisions taken early in system design can have significant benefits in terms of design quality. Motivated by this observation, this paper presents a reliability-centric high-level synthesis approach that addresses the soft error problem. The proposed approach tries to maximize reliability of the design while …

A Uniform Approach To Logic Programming Semantics, Pascal Hitzler, Matthias Wendt Jan 2005

A Uniform Approach To Logic Programming Semantics, Pascal Hitzler, Matthias Wendt

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Part of the theory of programming and nonymonotonic reasoning concerns the study of fixed-point semantics for these paradigms. Several different semantics have been proposed during the last two decades, and some have been more successful and acknowledged than others. The rationales behind those various semantics have been manifold, depending on one's point of view, which may be that of a programmer or inspired by commonsense reasoning, and consequently the constructions which lead to these semantics are technically very diverse, and the exact relationships between them have not yet been fully understood. In this paper, we present a conceptually new method, …

Glyde - An Expressive Xml Standard For The Representation Of Glycan, Satya S. Sahoo, Christopher Thomas, Amit P. Sheth, Cory Andrew Henson, William S. York

Kno.e.sis Publications

The amount of glycomics data being generated is rapidly increasing as a result of improvements in analytical and computational methods. Correlation and analysis of this large, distributed data set requires an extensible and flexible representational standard that is also ‘understood’ by a wide range of software applications. An XML-based data representation standard that faithfully captures essential structural details of a glycan moiety along with additional information (such as data provenance) to aid the interpretation and usage of glycan data, will facilitate the exchange of glycomics data across the scientific community. To meet this need, we introduce GLYcan Data Exchange (GLYDE) …

Discovering Informative Subgraphs In Rdf Graphs, William H. Milnor, Cartic Ramakrishnan, Matthew Perry, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Krzysztof Kochut

Kno.e.sis Publications

Discovering patterns in graphs has long been an area of interest. In most contemporary approaches to such pattern discovery either quantitative anomalies or frequency of substructure is used to measure the interestingness of a pattern. In this paper we address the issue of discovering informative sub-graphs within RDF graphs. We motivate our work with an example related to Semantic Search. A user might pose a question of the form: ' What are the most relevant ways in which entity X is related to entity Y?' the response to which is a subgraph connecting X to Y. Relevance of the …

Compressed Pattern Matching For Text And Images, Tao Tao Jan 2005

Compressed Pattern Matching For Text And Images, Tao Tao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The amount of information that we are dealing with today is being generated at an ever-increasing rate. On one hand, data compression is needed to efficiently store, organize the data and transport the data over the limited-bandwidth network. On the other hand, efficient information retrieval is needed to speedily find the relevant information from this huge mass of data using available resources. The compressed pattern matching problem can be stated as: given the compressed format of a text or an image and a pattern string or a pattern image, report the occurrence(s) of the pattern in the text or image …

Gmpac - The Generic Message Processing And Communications Framework, Eoin Barry

Theses

The Generic Message Processing and Communications Framework (GMPAC), is an extensible, communications architecture, which is concerned processing various message types. The GMPAC framework is designed around the java NIO API. It receives in various messages over a socket, decomposes them and extracts the payload. It then passes a message back to the sender in the same format as the received message. GMPAC uses xml files to define message formats, and decodes and decodes the messages using information contained in these definitions. This project was developed for Altobridge Tralee, meeting a set of requirements set out by them. This report provides …

A Robust Controller For The Manipulation Of Micro Scale Objects, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2005

A Robust Controller For The Manipulation Of Micro Scale Objects, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A suite of novel robust controllers is presented for the manipulation and handling of micro-scale objects in a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) where adhesive, surface tension, friction and van der Waals forces are dominant. Moreover, these forces are typically unknown. The robust controller overcomes the unknown system dynamics and ensures the performance in the presence of actuator constraints by assuming that the upper bounds on these forces are known. On the other hand, for the robust adaptive controller, the unknown forces are estimated online. Using the Lyapunov approach, the uniformly ultimate boundedness (UUB) of the closed-loop manipulation error is shown for …

Decentralized Discrete-Time Neural Network Controller For A Class Of Nonlinear Systems With Unknown Interconnections, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2005

Decentralized Discrete-Time Neural Network Controller For A Class Of Nonlinear Systems With Unknown Interconnections, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel decentralized neural network (NN) controller in discrete-time is designed for a class of uncertain nonlinear discrete-time systems with unknown interconnections. Neural networks are used to approximate both the uncertain dynamics of the nonlinear systems and the unknown interconnections. Only local signals are needed for the decentralized controller design and the stability of the overall system can be guaranteed using the Lyapunov analysis. Further, controller redesign for the original subsystems is not required when additional subsystems are appended. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller. The NN does not require an offline learning phase and the weights …

Energy-Efficient Rate Adaptation Mac Protocol For Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2005

Energy-Efficient Rate Adaptation Mac Protocol For Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Resource constraints in ad hoc wireless networks require that they are energy efficient during both transmission and rate adaptation. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient rate adaptation protocol that selects modulation schemes online to maximize throughput based on channel state while saving energy. This protocol uses the distributed power control (DPC) algorithm (M. Zawodniok et al., 2004) to accurately determine the necessary transmission power and to reduce the energy consumption. Additionally, the transmission rate is altered using energy efficiency as a constraint to meet the required throughput, which is estimated with queue fill ratio. Moreover, back-off scheme is …

Neural Network-Based Control Of Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems In Non-Strict Form, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Zheng Chen, Pingan He Jan 2005

Neural Network-Based Control Of Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems In Non-Strict Form, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Zheng Chen, Pingan He

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel reinforcement learning-based adaptive neural network (NN) controller, also referred as the adaptive-critic NN controller, is developed to deliver a desired tracking performance for a class of non-strict feedback nonlinear discrete-time systems in the presence of bounded and unknown disturbances. The adaptive critic NN controller architecture includes a critic NN and two action NNs. The critic NN approximates certain strategic utility function whereas the action neural networks are used to minimize both the strategic utility function and the unknown dynamics estimation errors. The NN weights are tuned online so as to minimize certain performance index. By using gradient descent-based …
