Examining the development and trends in software engineering technology is a huge undertaking. It is constantly evolving and affected by a large number of factors, which are themselves driven by a wide range of sub-factors. This dissertation is part of a long term project intended to analyze software engineering technology trends and how they evolve. This project is intended to analyze operating system trends and what are the factors that drive how they evolve. Basically, the following questions will be answered: "How to watch, predict, adapt to, and affect operating system's evolution trends?"
In previous research, YF Chen used statistical …
Live, Virtual, And Constructive Environments For Performance Support, John Michael Lacontora
Live, Virtual, And Constructive Environments For Performance Support, John Michael Lacontora
Dissertations
As military systems become more complex, the operation and support of these systems becomes intrinsically more difficult. The U.S. Army's current procurement process relies on industry to provide embedded training and performance support tools for the systems they produce. These tools are relatively new and in the early stages of development. As yet, they have failed to meet the needs of the technicians that are required to support these complex systems. Current efforts to provide enabling technologies that enhance the capabilities of automotive maintenance technicians are concentrated in three professional communities. First is the Performance Improvement community where work is …
Pattern Discovery In Structural Databases With Applications To Bioinformatics, Sen Zhang
Pattern Discovery In Structural Databases With Applications To Bioinformatics, Sen Zhang
Dissertations
Frequent structure mining (FSM) aims to discover and extract patterns frequently occurring in structural data such as trees and graphs. FSM finds many applications in bioinformatics, XML processing, Web log analysis, and so on. In this thesis, two new FSM techniques are proposed for finding patterns in unordered labeled trees. Such trees can be used to model evolutionary histories of different species, among others.
The first FSM technique finds cousin pairs in the trees. A cousin pair is a pair of nodes sharing the same parent, the same grandparent, or the same great-grandparent, etc. Given a tree T, our …
Performance Evaluation Of Various Allocation Methods In A Heterogeneous Disk Array Architecture, Bogdan Alexandru Branzoi
Performance Evaluation Of Various Allocation Methods In A Heterogeneous Disk Array Architecture, Bogdan Alexandru Branzoi
Theses
Dataset attributes, such as data availability levels and access patterns, make their mapping to certain RAID levels more desirable than others. On the other hand, it is not economically viable for an installation to acquire multiple disk arrays to satisfy diverse data storage requirements. A Heterogeneous Disk Array (HDA) architecture is proposed, which allows device heterogeneity as well as RAID level heterogeneity. In other words, various disks of different types can be incorporated in a single HDA and multiple RAID schemes can coexist in the same array. The goal of this architecture is to utilize the resources of all its …
Digital Libraries And Middleware Technology, Muhammad Umar Qasim
Digital Libraries And Middleware Technology, Muhammad Umar Qasim
Theses
Digital libraries deliver personalized knowledge directly to their users, without being restricted to the contents of a physical library. In a digital library information from any online source can be managed and shared, making more knowledge available to users than before. The information sharing is achieved by integrating many autonomous heterogeneous systems available. The challenge is to provide users with the ability to transparently access digital library contents in spite of the heterogeneity among the information sources.
Research communities have proposed several approaches to accomplish the system integration in digital libraries. In this thesis, the working of currently employed approaches …
Data Feed Management Automation : An Empirical Approach, Dibyendu Majumder
Data Feed Management Automation : An Empirical Approach, Dibyendu Majumder
Theses
This thesis proposes a framework for automation of data feed management and control. The framework can be classified into two broad areas i) building an ontology for a feed system and ii) developing a test suite, that is, a set of statistical models to analyze and diagnose feeds and formalize the results to feedback into the ontology. This thesis concentrates more on the latter and will only outline the course of action required for the former. Detailed descriptions of the statistical models that are part of the test suite are given and their strengths and weaknesses discussed. Practical results of …
Next Generation Satellite Orbital Control System, Thomas Gerard Nowak
Next Generation Satellite Orbital Control System, Thomas Gerard Nowak
Theses
Selection of the correct software architecture is vital for building successful software-intensive systems. Its realization requires important decisions about the organization of the system and by and large permits or prevents a system's acceptance and quality attributes such as performance and reliability. The correct architecture is essential for program success while the wrong one is a formula for disaster.
In this investigation, potential software architectures for the Next Generation Satellite Orbital Control System (NG-SOCS) are developed from compiled system specifications and a review of existing technologies. From the developed architectures, the recommended architecture is selected based on real-world considerations that …
2d Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship Modeling Of Methylphenidate Analogues Using Algorithm And Partial Least Square Regression, Noureen Wadhwaniya
2d Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship Modeling Of Methylphenidate Analogues Using Algorithm And Partial Least Square Regression, Noureen Wadhwaniya
Theses
Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) analysis attempts to develop a predictive model of biological activity based on molecular descriptors. 2D QSAR uses descriptors, such as topological indices, that are independent of molecular conformation. A genetic algorithm - partial least squares (GA-PLS) approach was used to identify the molecular descriptors that correlate to the biological activity (binding affinity) of a set of 80 methylphenidate analogues and to construct a predictive model. The GA code was implemented using the fitness function (1-(n-1)(1-q2)/ (n - c)), where n is the number of compounds, c is the optimal number of components, and q …
Analysis Of Relationship Between Software Metrics And Process Models, Sadia Munir
Analysis Of Relationship Between Software Metrics And Process Models, Sadia Munir
Theses
This thesis studies the correlation between software process models and software metrics. To support our studies we have defined a Process - Metric Evaluation Framework and derived an evaluation template from it. The template served as a basic tool in studding the relationships between various process models, artifacts and software metrics.
We have evaluated a number of process models according to our template and have identified suitable software metrics. We have also recommended a root cause analysis approach at various points of the process models.
The suggested software metrics can be derived from various product and process artifacts. They can …
Smartacking: Improving Tcp Performance From The Receiving End, Daniel K. Blandford, Sally A. Goldman, Sergey Gorinsky, Yan Zhou, Daniel R. Dooly
Smartacking: Improving Tcp Performance From The Receiving End, Daniel K. Blandford, Sally A. Goldman, Sergey Gorinsky, Yan Zhou, Daniel R. Dooly
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
We present smartacking, a technique that improves performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) via adaptive generation of acknowledgments (ACKs) at the receiver. When the bottleneck link is underutilized, the receiver transmits an ACK for each delivered data segment and thereby allows the connection to acquire the available capacity promptly. When the bottleneck link is at its capacity, the smartacking receiver sends ACKs with a lower frequency reducing the control traffic overhead and slowing down the congestion window growth to utilize the network capacity more effectively. To promote quick deployment of the technique, our primary implementation of smartacking modifies only the …
A Framework For Extraction Plans And Heuristics In An Ontology-Based Data-Extraction System, Alan E. Wessman
A Framework For Extraction Plans And Heuristics In An Ontology-Based Data-Extraction System, Alan E. Wessman
Theses and Dissertations
Extraction of information from semi-structured or unstructured documents, such as Web pages, is a useful yet complex task. Research has demonstrated that ontologies may be used to achieve a high degree of accuracy in data extraction while maintaining resiliency in the face of document changes. Ontologies do not, however, diminish the complexity of a data-extraction system. As research in the field progresses, the need for a modular data-extraction system that de-couples the various functional processes involved continues to grow.
In this thesis we propose a framework for such a system. The nature of the framework allows new algorithms and ideas …

In this paper, a distributed driver-in-the-Ioop and hardware-in-the-Ioop simulator is described with a driver on a motion simulator at the U.S. Army TARDEC Ground Vehicle Simulation Laboratory (GVSL). Realistic power system response is achieved by linking the driver in the GVSL with a full-sized hybrid electric power system located 2,450 miles away at the TARDEC Power and Energy Systems Integration Laboratory (P&E SIL), which is developed and maintained by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). The goal is to close the loop between the GVSL and P&E SIL over the Internet to provide a realistic driving experience in addition to realistic …
Algorithmic Beauty Of Buildings Methods For Procedural Building Generation, Jess Martin
Algorithmic Beauty Of Buildings Methods For Procedural Building Generation, Jess Martin
Computer Science Honors Theses
As virtual reality simulations, video games, and computer animated movies become more prevalent, the need arises to generate the content the three-dimensional models via an algorithm rather than crafting them by hand. Previous research in the area of procedural building generation has focused merely on the external appearance of commercial buildings. These methods are unsatisfactory for certain applications due to the lack of a walk-through feature. A new algorithm is proposed to generate residential units with realistic floor plans based partially on the architectural observations of Christopher Alexander. Results for the algorithm display real-time performance and a resemblance to real …

High-Throughput Inference Of Protein-Protein Interaction Sites From Unassigned Nmr Data By Analyzing Arrangements Induced By Quadratic Forms On 3-Manifolds, Ramgopal R. Mettu, Ryan H. Lilien, Bruce Randall Donald
Computer Science Technical Reports
We cast the problem of identifying protein-protein interfaces, using only unassigned NMR spectra, into a geometric clustering problem. Identifying protein-protein interfaces is critical to understanding inter- and intra-cellular communication, and NMR allows the study of protein interaction in solution. However it is often the case that NMR studies of a protein complex are very time-consuming, mainly due to the bottleneck in assigning the chemical shifts, even if the apo structures of the constituent proteins are known. We study whether it is possible, in a high-throughput manner, to identify the interface region of a protein complex using only unassigned chemical shift …
A Sin Of Omission: Database Transactions, David Hansen
A Sin Of Omission: Database Transactions, David Hansen
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Database courses are under increasing pressure to include new topics which inevitably leads to a decision about which topics are essential to the course and which can be omitted to make room for others. Recent surveys have indicated that many instructors are reducing or eliminating coverage of “transaction management” from their introductory database courses. As both an academic and a practitioner, I believe that this is a mistake. This paper discusses why the semantics of transaction management should be an integral topic in any introductory database management system course.

Bringing Up Robot: Fundamental Mechanisms For Creating A Self-Motivated, Self-Organizing Architecture, Doug Blank, Deepak Kumar, Lisa Meeden, James Marshall
Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
In this paper we describe an intrinsic developmental algorithm designed to allow a mobile robot to incrementally progress through levels of increasingly-sophisticated behavior. We believe that the core ingredients for such a developmental algorithm are abstractions, anticipations, and self-motivations. We propose a multi-level, cascaded discovery and control architecture that includes the core ingredients. Toward this proposal we explore two novel models: a governor for automatically regulating the training of a neural network; and a path-planning neural network driven by patterns of “mental states” representing protogoals.
Deriving Private Information From Randomized Data, Zhengli Huang, Wenliang Du, Biao Chen
Deriving Private Information From Randomized Data, Zhengli Huang, Wenliang Du, Biao Chen
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
Randomization has emerged as a useful technique for data disguising in privacy-preserving data mining. Its privacy properties have been studied in a number of papers. Kargupta et al. challenged the randomization schemes, and they pointed out that randomization might not be able to preserve privacy. However, it is still unclear what factors cause such a security breach, how they affect the privacy preserving property of the randomization, and what kinds of data have higher risk of disclosing their private contents even though they are randomized. We believe that the key factor is the correlations among attributes. We propose two data …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
This paper describes a comprehensive prototype of large-scale fault adaptive embedded software developed for the proposed Fermilab BTeV high energy physics experiment. Lightweight self-optimizing agents embedded within Level 1 of the prototype are responsible for proactive and reactive monitoring and mitigation based on specified layers of competence. The agents are self-protecting, detecting cascading failures using a distributed approach. Adaptive, reconfigurable, and mobile objects for reliability are designed to be self-configuring to adapt automatically to dynamically changing environments. These objects provide a self-healing layer with the ability to discover, diagnose, and react to discontinuities in real-time processing. A generic modeling environment …

Searching For High-Value Rare Events With Uncheatable Grid Computing, Wenliang Du, Michael T. Goodrich
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
High-value rare-event searching is arguably the most natural application of grid computing, where computational tasks are distributed to a large collection of clients (which comprise the computation grid) in such a way that clients are rewarded for performing tasks assigned to them. Although natural, rare-event searching presents significant challenges for a computation supervisor, who partitions and distributes the search space out to clients while contending with “lazy” clients, who don’t do all their tasks, and “hoarding ” clients, who don’t report rare events back to the supervisor. We provide schemes, based on a technique we call chaff injection, for efficiently …

A Random Rotation Perturbation Approach To Privacy Preserving Data Classification, Keke Chen, Ling Liu
Kno.e.sis Publications
This paper presents a random rotation perturbation approach for privacy preserving data classification. Concretely, we identify the importance of classification-specific information with respect to the loss of information factor, and present a random rotation perturbation framework for privacy preserving data classification. Our approach has two unique characteristics. First, we identify that many classification models utilize the geometric properties of datasets, which can be preserved by geometric rotation. We prove that the three types of classifiers will deliver the same performance over the rotation perturbed dataset as over the original dataset. Second, we propose a multi-column privacy model to address the …

Meteor-S Wsdi: A Scalable P2p Infrastructure Of Registries For Semantic Publication And Discovery Of Web Services, Kunal Verma, Kaarthik Sivashanmugam, Amit P. Sheth, Abhijit Patil, Swapna Oundhakar, John Miller
Kno.e.sis Publications
Web services are the new paradigm for distributed computing. They have much to offer towards interoperability of applications and integration of large scale distributed systems. To make Web services accessible to users, service providers use Web service registries to publish them. Current infrastructure of registries requires replication of all Web service publications in all Universal Business Registries. Large growth in number of Web services as well as the growth in the number of registries would make this replication impractical. In addition, the current Web service discovery mechanism is inefficient, as it does not support discovery based on the capabilities of …

Web services have primarily been designed for providing inter-operability between business applications. Current technologies assume a large amount of human interaction, for integrating two applications. This is primarily due to the fact that business process integration requires understanding of data and functions of the involved entities. Semantic Web technologies, powered by description logic based languages like OWL[1], aim to add greater meaning to Web content, by annotating the data with ontologies. Ontologies provide a mechanism of providing shared conceptualizations of domains. This allows agents to get an understanding of users’ Web content and greatly reduces human interaction for meaningful Web …
