E-Mail Spam Filtering Solution For The Western Interstate Commission For Higher Education (Wiche), Jerry Worley

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

WICHE staff, consultants and constituents that connect to WICHE's network are provided with internet access and e-mail accounts. In the past, email was not monitored or controlled, other than scanning e-mail attachments for viruses with Norton Antivirus for Exchange Server. This has become a problem for several reasons. Just a few of the reasons are viruses, wasted staff time, inappropriate material stored on the network and inappropriate use of network resources. The WICHE Spam filtering solution includes monitoring and restriction of incoming and outgoing email, email attachment and storage limitations and filtering incoming email for Spam. All internal, incoming and …

Improving Routing Security Using A Decentralized Public Key Distribution Algorithm, Jeremy C. Goold Apr 2005

Improving Routing Security Using A Decentralized Public Key Distribution Algorithm, Jeremy C. Goold

Theses and Dissertations

Today's society has developed a reliance on networking infrastructures. Health, financial, and many other institutions deploy mission critical and even life critical applications on local networks and the global Internet. The security of this infrastructure has been called into question over the last decade. In particular, the protocols directing traffic through the network have been found to be vulnerable. One such protocol is the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol. This thesis proposes a security extension to OSPF containing a decentralized certificate authentication scheme (DecentCA) that eliminates the single point of failure/attack present in current OSPF security extensions. An analysis …

Software Architecture Improvement Through Test-Driven Development: An Empirical Study, David S. Janzen Apr 2005

Software Architecture Improvement Through Test-Driven Development: An Empirical Study, David S. Janzen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Despite a half century of advances, the software construction industry still shows signs of immaturity. Professional software development organizations continue to struggle to produce reliable software in a predictable and repeatable manner. While a variety of development practices are advocated that might improve the situation, developers are often reluctant to adopt new, potentially better practices based on anecdotal evidence alone. As a result, empirical software engineering has gained credibility as a discipline that provides scientific data about practice efficacy on which developers can make critical decisions. This research proposes to apply empirical software engineering techniques to evaluate a new approach …

Experimental Program Analysis: A New Program Analysis Paradigm, Joseph R. Ruthruff, Sebastian Elbaum, Gregg Rothermel Apr 2005

Experimental Program Analysis: A New Program Analysis Paradigm, Joseph R. Ruthruff, Sebastian Elbaum, Gregg Rothermel

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Program analysis techniques analyze software systems to collect, deduce, or infer information about them, which can then be used in software-engineering related tasks. Recent research has suggested that a new form of program analysis technique might be created by incorporating characteristics of experimentation into analyses. This paper reports the results of research exploring this suggestion. Building on background in classical experimentation, we provide descriptive and operational definitions of experimental program analysis, illustrate them by examples, and describe several differences between experimental program analysis and classical experimentation. We present three studies that show how the use of the paradigm can help …

A Prototype Industrial Maintenance Software System To Apply A Proactive Approach To Equipment Failure, Arnold Ralph Persinger

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project proposes a technical solution to create a proactive approach to industrial equipment maintenance for a large paper manufacturing facility. The traditional method for scheduling maintenance on manufacturing equipment uses a reactive approach. Reactive maintenance essentially means to perform repairs on equipment after failure has occurred; the process of these repairs begins by acquiring needed replacement part(s) utilizing a SAP (Systems Applications Products) system for authorization and ordering. Actual repairs are carried out by craftsmen based on their general knowledge of a specific trade and any previous experience concerning the failed equipment. The part(s) order through the SAP system …

Developing A B -Tagging Algorithm Using Soft Muons At Level-3 For The Dø Detector At Fermilab, Mayukh Das

Doctoral Dissertations

The current data-taking phase of the DØ detector at Fermilab, called Run II, is designed to aid the search for the Higgs Boson. The neutral Higgs is postulated to have a mass of 117 GeV. One of the channels promising the presence of this hypothetical particle is through the decay of b-quark into a muon. The process of identifying a b-quark in a jet using muon as a reference is b-tagging with a muon tag.

At the current data taking and analysis rate, it will take long to reach the process of identifying valid events. The triggering mechanism of the …

The objective of this dissertation research is to aid the Web user to achieve his search objective at a host Web site by organizing a strongly connected neighborhood of Web pages that are thematically and spatially related to the user's search interest. Therefore, methods were developed to (1) find all Web pages at a given Web site that are thematically similar to a user's initial choice of a Web page (selected from the set of Web pages returned in response to a query by any popular search engine), and (2) organize these pages hierarchically in terms of their relevance to …

Integrated Modeling And Parallel Computation Of Laser-Induced Axisymmetric Rod Growth, Hong Lan Apr 2005

Integrated Modeling And Parallel Computation Of Laser-Induced Axisymmetric Rod Growth, Hong Lan

Doctoral Dissertations

To fully investigate a pyrolytic Laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) system for growing an axisymmetric rod, a novel integrated three-dimensional mathematical model was developed not only to describe the heat transport in the deposit and substrate, but also to simulate the gas-phase in the heated reaction zone and its effect on growth rate. The integrated model consists of three components: the substrate, rod, and gas-phase domains. Each component is a separate model and the three components are dynamically integrated into one model for simulating the iterative and complex process of rod deposition.

The gas-phase reaction is modeled by the gas-phase …

Web Service Semantics - Wsdl-S, Rama Akkiraju, Joel Farrell, John A. Miller, Meenakshi Nagarajan, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma Apr 2005

Web Service Semantics - Wsdl-S, Rama Akkiraju, Joel Farrell, John A. Miller, Meenakshi Nagarajan, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma

Kno.e.sis Publications

The current WSDL standard operates at the syntactic level and lacks the semantic expressivity needed to represent the requirements and capabilities of Web Services. Semantics can improve software reuse and discovery, significantly facilitate composition of Web services and enable integrating legacy applications as part of business process integration. The Web Service Semantic s technical note defines a mechanism to associate semantic annotations with Web services that are described using Web Service Description Language (WSDL). It is conceptually based on, but a significant refinement in details of, the original WSDL-S proposal [WSDL-S] from the LSDIS laboratory at the University of Georgia. …

Programmable Process Flow Networks, Filip D. Cuckov Apr 2005

Programmable Process Flow Networks, Filip D. Cuckov

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A model that introduces programmability to processes occurring in a cargo terminal simulation through the use of a process language is presented in this thesis. The model provides a means for a straight-forward definition, and redefinition of changing processes, their incorporation in the simulation architecture and efficient execution. The model was built to investigate a solution for transforming the cargo terminal simulation CPortS into a process-oriented simulation without hard-coded processes. The approach taken separates the system into an architecture and a set of processes which utilize and interact with the architecture's resources and infrastructure. The processes that take place within …

It is assumed that each cluster-node consists of p processors. The p processors that are contained in the master cluster-node are termed master processors, and the p processors that are contained in a slave cluster-node are termed slave processors. The slave processors are used to execute the replications, while the master processors are dedicated to schedule the replications and process other housekeeping chores. For …

Rapid Prototyping For The Design Of Virtual Worlds, Prabhu V. Krishnan Apr 2005

Rapid Prototyping For The Design Of Virtual Worlds, Prabhu V. Krishnan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Development of Virtual Reality (VR) applications is challenging where application developers are required to have expertise in the target VR technologies along with the problem domain expertise. New VR technologies impose a significant learning curve to even the most experienced VR developer. The proposed solution relies on synthesis to automate the migration of a VR application to a new unfamiliar VR platform/technology. To solve the problem, the Common Scene Definition Framework (CSDF) was developed, that serves as a superset/model representation of the target virtual world. Input modules were developed to populate the framework with the capabilities of the virtual world …

Generalization Issues In Pattern Classification Applied To Speaker Identification, Mame C. Sall Apr 2005

Generalization Issues In Pattern Classification Applied To Speaker Identification, Mame C. Sall

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an extension of previous work on speaker identification, but with a primary focus on the generalization performance of patterns classifiers for speaker identification. The goal for all pattern classifiers is to generalize to new data, not just perform well on the training data set. The error on the training data is typically a biased estimate of the generalization error. The training set error tends to be smaller than the generalization error if the model is selected such that it minimizes the training error. Therefore, the training error alone should not be used as a good predictor of …

Personalization By Program Slicing, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan Apr 2005

Personalization By Program Slicing, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Personalization involves customizing information access to the end-user. As any new area of computer science research it lacks formal models to guide the design of systems. In this paper, we present a modeling methodology, based on generative programming, for personalizing interactions with hierarchical websites. The methodology entails modeling a user’s interaction with a site in a program and applying program slicing to personalize the interaction. While preserving interactivity, this approach does not require the designer to anticipate all possible user interactions a priori and provide interfaces for each. Moreover, it provides a theoretical, systematic, and implementation-neutral way to design systems …

Mems: Mobile Environmental Management System, Keith Gardiner, A Rizzini, James Carswell, Michela Bertolotto

Conference papers

This paper describes a web-based and Mobile Environmental Management System (MEMS) prototype specifically tailored to perform context-aware queries and updating of spatial datasets. Spatially enabled computing can provide situation aware assistance to both web-based and mobile users by presenting the right information at the right time, place, and situation using context-associated knowledge. Contextassociated knowledge is assembled by combining knowledge gained about information accessed in the past with the activities planned by the user, together with other situation dependencies (e.g. location) of these activities. The MEMS datasets are provided by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the prototype …
