New Efficient Mds Array Codes For Raid Part Ii: Rabin-Like Codes For Tolerating Multiple (>=4) Disk Failures, Gui-Liang Feng, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
New Efficient Mds Array Codes For Raid Part Ii: Rabin-Like Codes For Tolerating Multiple (>=4) Disk Failures, Gui-Liang Feng, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A new class of Binary Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) array codes which are based on circular permutation matrices are introduced in this paper. These array codes are used for tolerating multiple (greater than or equal to 4) disk failures in Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) architecture. The size of the information part is m \times n, where n is the number of information disks and (m+1) is a prime integer; the size of the parity-check part is m \times r, the minimum distance is r+1, and the number of parity-check disks is r. In practical applications, m can be …
Matrix: Adaptive Middleware For Distributed Multiplayer Games, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Maria Ebling, Paul Castro, Archan Misra
Matrix: Adaptive Middleware For Distributed Multiplayer Games, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Maria Ebling, Paul Castro, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Building a distributed middleware infrastructure that provides the low latency required for massively multiplayer games while still maintaining consistency is non-trivial. Previous attempts have used static partitioning or client-based peer-to-peer techniques that do not scale well to a large number of players, perform poorly under dynamic workloads or hotspots, and impose significant programming burdens on game developers. We show that it is possible to build a scalable distributed system, called Matrix, that is easily usable by game developers. We show experimentally that Matrix provides good performance, especially when hotspots occur.
Sequential Aggregate Signatures Working Over Independent Homomorphic Trapdoor One-Way Permutation Domains, Huafei Zhu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng
Sequential Aggregate Signatures Working Over Independent Homomorphic Trapdoor One-Way Permutation Domains, Huafei Zhu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The contribution of this paper has two folds. In the first fold, we propose a generic construction of sequential aggregate signatures from families of certificated trapdoor one-way permutations. We show that our construction is provably secure in the random oracle model assuming that the underlying homomorphic permutations are trapdoor one-way. Compared to Lysyanskaya et al’s generic construction that is constructed from a trapdoor one-way permutation family working over the same domain [16], our scheme works over independent trapdoor one-way permutation domains. The flexible choice of the underlying permutation domains benefits our scheme to its applications in the real world where …
An Efficient And Robust Computational Framework For Studying Lifetime And Information Capacity In Sensor Networks, Enrique J. Duarte-Melo, Mingyan Liu, Archan Misra
An Efficient And Robust Computational Framework For Studying Lifetime And Information Capacity In Sensor Networks, Enrique J. Duarte-Melo, Mingyan Liu, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper we investigate the expected lifetime and information capacity, defined as the maximum amount of data (bits) transferred before the first sensor node death due to energy depletion, of a data-gathering wireless sensor network. We develop a fluid-flow based computational framework that extends the existing approach, which requires precise knowledge of the layout/deployment of the network, i.e., exact sensor positions. Our method, on the other hand, views a specific network deployment as a particular instance (sample path) from an underlying distribution of sensor node layouts and sensor data rates. To compute the expected information capacity under this distribution-based …
Improving The Quality Of Conceptual Modeling Using Cognitive Mapping Techniques, Keng Siau, X. Tan
Improving The Quality Of Conceptual Modeling Using Cognitive Mapping Techniques, Keng Siau, X. Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Conceptual modeling involves the understanding and communication between system analysts and end-users. Many factors may affect the quality of conceptual modeling processes as well as the models per se. Human cognition plays a pivotal role in understanding these factors and cognitive mapping techniques are effective tools to elicit and represent human cognition. In this paper, we look at the use of cognitive mapping techniques to improve the quality of conceptual modeling. We review frameworks on quality in conceptual modeling and examine the role of human cognition in conceptual modeling. The paper also discusses how human cognition is related to quality …

Addressing resource variation plays an increasingly important role in engineering today's software systems. Research in resource-adaptive applications takes an important step towards addressing this problem. However, existing solutions stop short of addressing the fact that different user tasks often have specific goals of quality of service, and that such goals often entail multiple aspects of quality of service. This paper presents a framework for engineering software systems capable of adapting to resource variations in ways that are specific to the quality goals of each user task. For that, users are empowered to specify their task-specific preferences with respect to multiple …
Authenticating Query Results In Data Publishing, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng, Hwee Hwa Pang, Jianying Zhou
Authenticating Query Results In Data Publishing, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng, Hwee Hwa Pang, Jianying Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose a communication-efficient authentication scheme to authenticate query results disseminated by untrusted data publishing servers. In our scheme, signatures of multiple tuples in the result set are aggregated into one and thus the communication overhead incurred by the signature keeps constant. Next attr-MHTs (tuple based Merkle Hash Tree) are built to further reduce the communication overhead incurred by auxiliary authentication information (AAI). Besides the property of communication-efficiency, our scheme also supports dynamic SET operations (UNION, INTERSECTION) and dynamic JOIN with immunity to reordering attack.

Tailored Watermarking Schemes For Authentication Of Electronic Clinical Atlases, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Beng-Chin Ooi, Yanjiang Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
It is accepted that digital watermarking is quite relevant in medical imaging. However, due to the special nature of clinical practice, it is often required that watermarking not introduce irreversible distortions to medical images. The electronic clinical atlas has such a need of "lossless" watermarking. We present two tailored reversible watermarking schemes for the clinical atlas by exploiting its inherent characteristics. We have implemented the schemes and our experimental results look very promising.
A Framework To Learn Bayesian Network From Changing, Multiple-Source Biomedical Data, Li G., Tze-Yun Leong
A Framework To Learn Bayesian Network From Changing, Multiple-Source Biomedical Data, Li G., Tze-Yun Leong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Structure learning in Bayesian network is a big issue. Many efforts have tried to solve this problem and quite a few algorithms have been proposed. However, when we attempt to apply the existing methods to microarray data, there are three main challenges: 1) there are many variables in the data set, 2) the sample size is small, and 3) microarray data are changing from experiment to experiment and new data are available quickly. To address these three problems, we assume that the major functions of a kind of cells do not change too much in different experiments, and propose a …
Integration Of Probabilistic Graphic Models For Decision Support, Jiang C., Poh K., Tze-Yun Leong
Integration Of Probabilistic Graphic Models For Decision Support, Jiang C., Poh K., Tze-Yun Leong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
It is a frequently encountered problem that new knowledge arrived when making decisions in a dynamic world. Usually, domain experts cannot afford enough time and knowledge to effectively assess and combine both qualitative and quantitative information in these models. Existing approaches can solve only one of two tasks instead of both. We propose a four-step algorithm to integrate multiple probabilistic graphic models, which can effectively update existing models with newly acquired models. In this algorithm, the qualitative part of model integration is performed first, followed by the quantitative combination. We illustrate our method with an example of combining three models. …

As the Semantic Web gains importance for sharing knowledge on the Internet this has lead to the development and publishing of many ontologies in different domains. When trying to reuse existing ontologies into their applications, users are faced with the problem of determining if an ontology is suitable for their needs. In this paper, we introduce OntoQA, an approach that analyzes ontology schemas and their populations (i.e. knowledgebases) and describes them through a well defined set of metrics. These metrics can highlight key characteristics of an ontology schema as well as its population and enable users to make an informed …

Autonomous mobile entity navigation through dynamic and unknown environments is an essential part of many mission critical applications like search and rescue and fire fighting. The dynamism of the environment necessitates the mobile entity to constantly maintain a high degree of awareness of the changing environment. This criteria makes it difficult to achieve good navigation performance by using just on-board sensors and existing navigation methods and motivates the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to aid navigation. In this paper, we present a novel approach that integrates a roadmap based navigation algorithm with a novel network query protocol called Roadmap …
Generating Data-Extraction Ontologies By Example, Yuanqiu Zhou
Generating Data-Extraction Ontologies By Example, Yuanqiu Zhou
Theses and Dissertations
Ontology-based data-extraction is a resilient web data-extraction approach. A major limitation of this approach is that ontology experts must manually develop and maintain data-extraction ontologies. The limitation prevents ordinary users who have little knowledge of conceptual models from making use of this resilient approach. In this thesis we have designed and implemented a general framework, OntoByE, to generate data-extraction ontologies semi-automatically through a small set of examples collected by users. With the assistance of a limited amount of prior knowledge, experimental evidence shows that OntoByE is capable of interacting with users to generate data-extraction ontologies for domains of interest to …

Popular security techniques such as public-private key encryption, firewalls, and role-based access control offer significant protec-tion of system data, but offer only limited protection of the computations using that data from significant interference due to accident or adversarial attack. However, in an increasing number of modern systems, ensuring the reliable execution of system activities is every bit as important as ensuring data security. This paper makes three contributions to the state of the art in protection of the execution of system activities from accidental or adversarial interference. First, we consider the motivating problem of CPU-focused denial of service attacks, and …

Marketing Military Service Benefits Segmentation Based On Generalized And Restricted Exchange, Caroline Fisher, Kimball P. Marshall
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Willingness to engage in exchange is based on desired benefits. In typical commercial transactions, restricted exchange benefits dominate. However, public policy, social marketing situations might require consideration of both restricted and generalized exchange benefits. Applying factor analysis, cluster analysis and cross-tabulation, this paper reports research that has successfully segmented a young adult target market regarding interest in military service based on considerations of generalized and restricted exchange motivations. This research contributes to a growing body of literature on generalized exchange as a key conceptual element for social marketing. Results demonstrate the utility of the generalized exchange concept in identifying amarket …

A Software Development Environment For Building Context-Aware Systems For Family Technology, Jeremiah Kenton Jones
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to utilize existing technologies to create a development environment suitable for creating context-aware applications and systems specific to home and family living conditions. After outlining the history of context-aware applications and the challenges that face family-centric systems in this field, a development environment was implemented that solves the unique challenges that face application development for family-centric, context-aware applications. In particular, research cited in this document indicates that a browser-based user interface is the most appropriate interface for a family environment. The flexibility of the interface, as well as the familiarity of the application structure …

Generating Medical Logic Modules For Clinical Trial Eligibility, Craig G. Parker
Theses and Dissertations
Clinical trials are important to the advancement of medical science. They provide the experimental and statistical basis needed to determine the benefit of diagnostic and therapeutic agents and procedures. The more patients enrolled in a clinical trial, the more confidence we can have in the trial's results. However, current practices for identifying eligible patients can be expensive and time-consuming. To assist in making identification of eligible patients more cost effective, we have developed a system for translating the eligibility criteria for clinical trials to an executable form. This system takes as input the eligibility criteria for a trial formatted as …

This paper describes the process of grid-enabling a vibroacoustic analysis application using the Globus Toolkit 3.2.1. This is the first step in a project intended to grid-enable a suite of tools being developed as a service-oriented architecture for spacecraft telemetry analysis. Many of the applications in the suite are compute intensive and would benefit from significantly improved performance. In this paper we show the advantage of using Globus to grid-enable a single tool in a vibroacoustic analysis flow, with the result that using as few as eleven nodes, that tool’s runtime improved by a factor of eight. While communication overhead …

Real-Time Motion Transition By Example, Cameron Quinn Egbert
Real-Time Motion Transition By Example, Cameron Quinn Egbert
Theses and Dissertations
Motion transitioning is a common task in real-time applications such as games. While most character motions can be created a priori using motion capture or hand animation, transitions between these motions must be created by an animation system at runtime. Because of this requirement, it is often difficult to create a transition that preserves the feel that the actor or animator has put into the motion. An additional difficulty is that transitions must be created in real-time. This paper provides a method of creating motion transitions that is both computationally feasible for interactive speeds, and preserves the feel of the …
Verification Of Digital Controller Verifications, Xuan Wang
Verification Of Digital Controller Verifications, Xuan Wang
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an analysis framework to verify the stablility property of a closed-loop control system with a software controller implementation. The usual approach to verifying stability for software uses experiments which are costly and can be dangerous. More recently, mathematical models of software have been proposed which can be used to reason about the correctness of controllers. However, these mathematical models ignore computational details that may be important in verification. We propose a method to determine the instability of a closed-loop system with a software controller implementation under l^2 inputs using simulation. This method avoids the cost of experimentation …

Master’S Thesis Proposal: Computation Reuse In Stacking And Unstacking, Anne Loomis
Computer Science Technical Reports
Algorithms for dynamic simulation and control are fundamental to many applications, including computer games and movies, medical simulation, and mechanical design. I propose to explore efficient algorithms for finding a stable unstacking sequence -- an order in which we can remove every object from a structure without causing the structure to collapse under gravity at any step. We begin with a basic unstacking sequence algorithm: consider the set of all objects in a structure. Collect all possible subsets into a disassembly graph. Search the graph, testing the stability of each node as it is visited. Any path of stable nodes …

Improving After-The-Fact Tracing And Mapping: Supporting Software Quality Predictions, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, Senthil Sundaram
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The software engineering industry undertakes many activities that require generating and using mappings. Companies develop knowledge bases to capture corporate expertise and possibly proprietary information. Software developers build traceability matrices to demonstrate that their designs satisfy the requirements. Proposal managers map customers' statements of work to individual sections of companies' proposals to prove compliance. Systems engineers authoring interface specifications record design rationales as they make relevant decisions. We developed an approach to tracing and mapping that aims to use fully automated information retrieval techniques, and we implemented our approach in a tool called RETRO (requirements tracing on target).

An unusual alliance called the ARCHway Project is developing an Edition Production Technology (EPT), a technological infrastructure for collaborative research, teaching, and learning between computer scientists and specialists in Old English. Our goal is to identify and solve problems of mutual importance in building image-based electronic editions of significant cultural materials. The EPT will allow us to implement and integrate both new and already available software applications, to construct a digital library of previously unedited Old English manuscripts as a testbed for our solutions, and to distribute the digital library to the public. This paper introduces some of the tools …

We present methods for optimally adapting Web processes to exogenous events while preserving inter-service dependencies. For example, in a supply chain process, orders placed by the manufacturer may get delayed in arriving. In response to this event, the manufacturer has the choice of either waiting out the delay or changing the supplier.

We present a preliminary version of the approximate OWL reasoning system SCREECH. It builds on the KAON2 system and performs OWL ABox reasoning in an approximate manner. It trades soundness of reasoning for efficiency, with resulting polynomial worst-case data complexity. It has been developed for use in time-critical applications where quick response time is more important than a full guarantee of correctness of answers. The theoretical background for the system is explained in [Hitzler and Vrandecic, 2005] and is being presented at the conference.

On Improving Local Website Search Using Web Server Traffic Logs: A Preliminary Report, Qing Cui, Alex Dekhtyar
Computer Science and Software Engineering
In this paper we give a preliminary report on our study of the use of web server traffic logs to improve local search. Web server traffic logs are, typically, private to individual websites and as such – are unavailable to traditional web search engines conducting searches across multiple web sites. However, they can be used to augment search performed by a local search engine, restricted to a single site. Web server traffic logs, which we will refer to as simply logs throughout this paper, contain information on traffic patterns on a web site. By using this information, instead of pure …
