Concurrent Markup Hierarchies: A Computer Science Approach, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar
Concurrent Markup Hierarchies: A Computer Science Approach, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar
Computer Science and Software Engineering
It is known that text has not, in general, a regular structure. However, since its invention and despite to the fact that it represents hierarchical structures, XML has gained a lot of popularity among humanities researchers: XML is easy to use and it comes with a handful of free processing tools. A variety of solutions were proposed to represent overlapping structures in XML. More or less easy to maintain from the point of view of data management, none of these solutions provides full support for two of the most demanded processing tasks: querying and presentation (XSL-like transformation).
We propose a …

Processing Xml Documents With Overlapping Hierarchies, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The problem of overlapping markup hierarchies, first mentioned in the context of SGML, often occurs in XML text encoding applications for humanities. Previous solutions to the problem rely on manual maintenance of the markup and address only the problem of representing overlapping features in XML, leaving the issues of automated maintenance and querying open. As a consequence, traditional XML tools are of little practical use when dealing with overlapping markup. In this work we demonstrate the implementation of our framework for management of concurrent XML hierarchies from a computer science perspective. We propose an underlying model, data structures, APIs, and …

C# Traceability System, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Michael Kernahan, Miriam Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Traceability information is a valuable asset that software development teams can leverage to minimise their risk during production and maintenance of software projects. When maintainers are added to a software project post-production, they have to learn the system from scratch and understand its dynamics before they can begin making appropriate modifications to the source code. The system outlined in this paper extracts traceability information directly from the source code of C# projects, and presents it in such a way that it can be easily used to understand the logic and validate changes to the system.
A Tool Supporting Validation Of Uml Models, Weng Liong Low
A Tool Supporting Validation Of Uml Models, Weng Liong Low
Masters Theses
Software design is an important phase in the computer software development life cycle. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a widely used notation to design software models. As a software system increases in size and complexity it is harder for developers to check that their UML models are correct with respect to the UML metamodel. Consistency among different diagrams in a UML model is also important to ensure that there are no design conflicts that will lead to problems later. Incorrect software design will result in loss of productivity, time and money as developers fix design errors. Therefore, to ensure …

A Framework For Model Checking Object Oriented Security Protocol Implementations, Parikshit Singh
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
With the rapid growth of the Internet, more and more vendors see the Internet as a viable marketplace. Since the Internet is public, providing security in the presence of malicious intruders has become paramount. Security protocols have been proposed to protect systems. These protocols work by exchanging messages, many of which are encrypted. Though it may take a long time for an intruder to break the underlying encryption employed by the protocol, it is possible for the intruder to intervene in the authentication process. It may take years before a crucial loophole is discovered in a security protocol. Until then, …
Non-Stretchable Pseudo-Visibility Graphs, Ileana Streinu
Non-Stretchable Pseudo-Visibility Graphs, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We exhibit a family of graphs which can be realized as pseudo-visibility graphs of pseudo-polygons, but not of straight-line polygons. The example is based on the characterization of vertex-edge pseudo-visibility graphs of O'Rourke and Streinu [Proc. ACM Symp. Comput. Geometry, Nice, France, 1997, pp. 119-128] and extends a recent result of the author [Proc. ACM Symp. Comput. Geometry, Miami Beach, 1999, pp. 274-280] on non-stretchable vertex-edge visibility graphs. We construct a pseudo-visibility graph for which there exists a unique compatible vertex-edge visibility graph, which is then shown to be non-stretchable. The construction is then extended to an infinite family. © …
Description Logic Programs: A Practical Choice For The Modelling Of Ontologies, Rudi Studer, York Sure, Pascal Hitzler
Description Logic Programs: A Practical Choice For The Modelling Of Ontologies, Rudi Studer, York Sure, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Knowledge representation using ontologies constitutes the heart of semantic technologies. Despite successful standardization efforts by the W3C, however, there are still numerous different ontology representation languages being used, and interoperability between them is in general not given. The problem is aggrevated by the fact that current standards lay foundations only and are well-known to be insufficient for the modelling of finer details. Thus, a plethora of extensions of the basic languages is being proposed, rendering the picture of ontology representation languages to be chaotic, to say the least. While semantic technologies start to become applicable and are being applied in …

Capturing Design Patterns For Performance Issues In Database-Driven Web Applications, Osama Mabroul Khaled
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The Design patterns technology is a new research topic which aims at helping with communicating technical knowledge in a standard non-technical format. People coming from different technical backgrounds can share this knowledge and apply it in their own way. For example, pieces of designs could be the same for different applications but they get implemented using different programming languages. On the other hand, web applications are becoming more widely spread, especially e-commerce ones, which make light returns on investment and achieve good relations between the companies and the customers. To stabilize this relationship, a web application must have a good …
The Analysis Of A Link Between A Remote Local Area Network And Its Server Resources, Theresa D. Beaver
The Analysis Of A Link Between A Remote Local Area Network And Its Server Resources, Theresa D. Beaver
Theses and Dissertations
As the Air Force transitions to an expeditionary force, the service's ability to provide computer capabilities at remote locations becomes more and more paramount. One way to provide this support is to create a Local Area Network (LAN) in which the workstations are positioned at the deployed location while the servers are maintained at a Main Operating Base (MOB). This saves the military money, because it eliminates the need to purchase and deploy server equipment as well as eliminating the need to deploy personnel to set-up and maintain the servers. There is, however, a tradeoff. As the number of personnel …
Automatically Discovering The Number Of Clusters In Web Page Datasets, Zhongmei Yao
Automatically Discovering The Number Of Clusters In Web Page Datasets, Zhongmei Yao
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Clustering is well-suited for Web mining by automatically organizing Web pages into categories, each of which contains Web pages having similar contents. However, one problem in clustering is the lack of general methods to automatically determine the number of categories or clusters. For the Web domain in particular, currently there is no such method suitable for Web page clustering. In an attempt to address this problem, we discover a constant factor that characterizes the Web domain, based on which we propose a new method for automatically determining the number of clusters in Web page data sets. We discover that the …
Modeling Users' Mobility Among Wifi Access Points, Minkyong Kim, David Kotz
Modeling Users' Mobility Among Wifi Access Points, Minkyong Kim, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
Modeling movements of users is important for simulating wireless networks, but current models often do not reflect real movements. Using real mobility traces, we can build a mobility model that reflects reality. In building a mobility model, it is important to note that while the number of handheld wireless devices is constantly increasing, laptops are still the majority in most cases. As a laptop is often disconnected from the network while a user is moving, it is not feasible to extract the exact path of the user from network messages. Thus, instead of modeling individual user's movements, we model movements …

Auto-Pipe: A Pipeline Design And Evaluation System, Mark A. Franklin, John Maschmeyer, Eric Tyson, James Buckley, Patrick Crowley
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Auto-Pipe is a tool that aids in the design, evaluation, and implementation of pipelined applications that are distributed across a set of heterogeneous devices including multiple processors and FPGAs. It has been developed to meet the needs arising in the domains of communications, computation on large datasets, and real time streaming data applications. In this paper, the Auto-Pipe design flow is introduced and two sample applications, developed for compatibility with the Auto-Pipe system, are presented. The sample applications are the Triple-DES encryption standard and a subset of the signal-processing pipeline for VERITAS, a high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics experiment. These applications are …

We present our work in integrating Semantic Web services for access via mobile devices. We have developed a system, the WebServiceAccessComponent, that transforms a user request for a service on a mobile device, to a Web service request and then selects a matching service from the existing Web services of the Deutsche Telekom, which provide navigational and weather information. In this poster, we present the requirements and design of the WebServiceAccessComponent.
Towards A Systematic Account Of Different Semantics For Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler
Towards A Systematic Account Of Different Semantics For Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
A new methodology has been proposed which allows one to derive uniform characterizations of different declarative semantics for logic programs with negation. One result from this work is that the well-founded semantics can formally be understood as a stratified version of the Fitting (or Kripke–Kleene) semantics. The constructions leading to this result, however, show a certain asymmetry which is not readily understood. We study this situation here with the result that we obtain a coherent picture of relations between different semantics for normal logic programs.

Different Web Service standards like WSDL, WS-Security, WS-Policy etc., henceforth referred to as WS*, factorize Web Service management tasks into different aspects, such as input/output, workflow, or security. The advantages of WS* are multiple and have already achieved industrial impact. WS* descriptions are exchangeable and developers may use different implementations for the same Web Service description. The disadvantages of WS*, however, are also apparent: even though the different standards are complementary, they must overlap and one may produce models composed of different WS* descriptions, which are inconsistent with each other, but the reasons for the inconsistencies are not easily determined. …
Phishing Warden: Enhancing Content-Triggered Trust Negotiation To Prevent Phishing Attacks, James Presley Henshaw
Phishing Warden: Enhancing Content-Triggered Trust Negotiation To Prevent Phishing Attacks, James Presley Henshaw
Theses and Dissertations
Phishing attacks are spam e-mails that attempt to fool recipients into divulging their identifying information by posing as a message from a well known company and using that company's branding and logos. It is estimated that phishing attacks have cost bank and credit card customers $1.2 billion in the U.S. in 2003. Previous work, content-triggered trust negotiation (CTTN), filters Internet traffic for sensitive data, and prevents a user from disclosing sensitive information to an un-trusted server. However, existing CTTN implementations are vulnerable to client-side scripts that obfuscate any data the client's browser sends to the web server in order to …

Parallel Versus Iterated: Comparing Population Oriented And Chained Sequential Simulated Annealing Approaches To Cost-Based Abduction, Heba Abdallah Amer
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Stochastic search techniques are used to solve NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. Simulated annealing, genetic algorithms and hybridization of both, all attempt to find the best solution with minimal cost and time. Guided Evolutionary Simulated Annealing is one technique of such hybridization. It is based on evolutionary programming where a number of simulated annealing chains are working in a generation to find the optimum solution for a problem. Abduction is the problem of finding the best explanation to a given set of observations. In AI, this has been modeled by a set of hypotheses that need to be assumed to prove …

Intrusion detection research over the last twenty years has focused on the threat of individuals illegally hacking into systems. Nowadays, intrusion threat to computer systems has changed radically. Instead of dealing with hackers, most current works focus on defending the system against code-driven attacks. Today’s web script codes such as VBScript are receiving increasing focus as a backdoor for attacking many computers through e-mail attachments or infected web sites. The nature of these malicious codes is that they can spread widely causing serious damages to many applications. Moreover, the majority of anti-virus tools used today are able to detect known …

Dsi: A Fully Distributed Spatial Index For Wireless Data Broadcast, Wang-Chien Lee, Baihua Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent announcement of the MSN Direct Service has demonstrated the feasibility and industrial interest in utilizing wireless broadcast for pervasive information services. To support location-based services in wireless data broadcast systems, a distributed spatial index (called DSI) is proposed in this paper. DSI is highly efficient because it has a linear yet fully distributed structure that facilitates multiple search paths to be naturally mixed together by sharing links. Moreover, DSI is very resilient in error-prone wireless communication environments. Search algorithms for two classical location-based queries, window queries and kNN queries, based on DSI are presented. Performance evaluation of DSI shows …

A Framework For Routing And Topological Decision-Making Within A Transformational Communications Architecture, Alexander I. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
A Transformational Communications Architecture (TCA) has been proposed by the US government with the goal of creating "an Internet in the sky." This thesis presents a framework which places user requirements at the heart of routing and topological decision-making within the TCA. It provides new terminology to describe data transmissions and link characteristics and an approach to formulating cost functions to better meet user needs. The framework is intended to stimulate interest and focus efforts on how to meet military specific requirements by taking advantage of the TCA's diverse capabilities and topology. Cost functions using newly-defined parameters are simulated and …

Analysis Of A Wi-Fi Hotspot Network, David P. Blinn, Tristan Henderson, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
Wireless hotspot networks have become increasingly popular in recent years as a means of providing Internet access in public areas such as restaurants and airports. In this paper we present the first study of such a hotspot network. We examine five weeks of SNMP traces from the Verizon Wi-Fi HotSpot network in Manhattan. We find that far more cards associated to the network than logged into it. Most clients used the network infrequently and visited few APs. AP utilization was uneven and the network displayed some unusual patterns in traffic load. Some characteristics were similar to those previously observed in …

The Canetti-Krawczyk (CK) model uses resuable modular components to construct indistinguishability-based key exchange protocols. The reusability of modular protocol components makes it easier to construct and prove new protocols when compared with other provably secure approaches. In this paper, we build an efficient anonymous and authenticated key exchange protocol for roaming by using the modular approach under the CK-model. Our protocol requires only four message flows and uses only standard cryptographic primitives. We also propose a one-pass counter based MT-authenticator and show its security under the assumption that there exists a MAC which is secure against chosen message attack.
