On Security Notions Of Steganographic Systems, Kisik Chang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao, Sangjin Lee, Hyungjun Kim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We define the notion of pseudoprocessingness to formulate chosen-input-attack, chosen-stego-attack, and key-recovery. We then construct a efficient, provable secure steganographic algorithm against chosen-input-attack and key-recovery. So far as we know, this is the first paper dealing with those security notions.
Mining Ontological Knowledge From Domain-Specific Text Documents, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan
Mining Ontological Knowledge From Domain-Specific Text Documents, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traditional text mining systems employ shallow parsing techniques and focus on concept extraction and taxonomic relation extraction. This paper presents a novel system called CRCTOL for mining rich semantic knowledge in the form of ontology from domain-specific text documents. By using a full text parsing technique and incorporating both statistical and lexico-syntactic methods, the knowledge extracted by our system is more concise and contains a richer semantics compared with alternative systems. We conduct a case study wherein CRCTOL extracts ontological knowledge, specifically key concepts and semantic relations, from a terrorism domain text collection. Quantitative evaluation, by comparing with a state-of-the-art …

This paper presents MobiQuery, a spatiotemporal query service that allows mobile users to periodically collect sensor data from the physical environment through wireless sensor networks. A salient feature of \MQ is that it can meet stringent spatiotemporal performance constraints, including query latency, data freshness, and changing areas of interest due to user mobility. We present three just-in-time prefetching protocols that enable MobiQuery to achieve desired spatiotemporal performance despite low node duty cycles, while significantly reducing communication overhead. We validate our approach through both theoretical analysis and extensive simulations under realistic settings including varying user movement patterns and location errors.

Course Development For A College Java Programming Class, Nathan Dodge
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This project documents the development of college-level curriculum for an Object Oriented Programming with Java course. The curriculum includes a set of lessons that students work through interactively. The lessons teach the fundamentals of object orientation. A goal of the project is to have students work with the same problem example throughout the entire set of lessons. Most texts on object orientation use several abstract examples which are used in a chapter or two of the text and are often not fully implemented. Each lesson of the project's curriculum presents an iteration of an evolving shape drawing application. Each lesson …

With the migration to Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, which uses the concept of logical rings, for backbone transmission systems, one of the major concerns that has been brought up repeatedly is a method in which to bring sub-rate circuits from one ring to another without having to decompose the entire backbone data stream to its individual circuits. This is critically important since the backbone data rate can be as high as 10 Gigabits per second or greater and may carry several thousand circuits, ranging in data rate from less than 2.4 Kilobits per second to 2.5 Gbps (STM-16). One potential means …

Reconstructability Analysis As A Tool For Identifying Gene-Gene Interactions In Studies Of Human Diseases: Ieee Version, Martin Zwick, Stephen Shervais, Patricia Kramer
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
There are a number of human diseases that are caused by the epistatic interaction of multiple genes. Detecting these interactions with standard statistical tools is difficult, because there may be an interaction effect, but minimal or no main effect. Reconstructability analysis uses Shannon’s information theory to detect relationships between variables in categorical datasets. We apply reconstructability analysis to data generated by five different models of gene-gene interaction, with heritability levels from 0.053 to 0.008, using 200 controls and 200 cases. We find that even with heritability levels as low as 0.008, and with the inclusion of 50 non-associated genes in …

Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard Christopher Davis
Informal Animation Sketching With K-Sketch, Richard Christopher Davis
Research Collection School of Computing and Information Systems
Animation is a powerful medium that is accessible to few, because current animation tools are extremely complex. This complexity arises partially from current tools’ focus on precise, often unnecessary details and partially from the difficulty of finding a small but sufficiently powerful set of tool features. We are designing K-Sketch, an informal 2D animation tool that uses sketching and demonstration to radically reduce the time needed to create an animation. Our field studies investigating the needs of current anima-tion tool users and would-be users are helping us to mini-mize complexity by showing us how to prioritize the many possible tool …

A Framework For Comparing Requirements Tracing Experiments, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The building of traceability matrices by those other than the original developers is an arduous, error prone, prolonged, and labor intensive task. Thus, after-the-fact requirements tracing is a process where the right kind of automation can definitely assist an analyst. Recently, a number of researchers have studied the application of various methods, often based on information retrieval after-the-fact tracing. The studies are diverse enough to warrant a means for comparing them easily as well as for determining areas that require further investigation. To that end, we present here an experimental framework for evaluating requirements tracing and traceability studies. Common methods, …

This paper summarizes progress to date on the WSU model for engineering mathematics education, an NSF funded curriculum reform initiative at Wright State University. The WSU model seeks to increase student retention, motivation and success in engineering through application-driven, just-in-time engineering math instruction. The WSU approach involves the development of a novel freshman-level engineering mathematics course EGR 101, as well as a large-scale restructuring of the engineering curriculum. By removing traditional math prerequisites and moving core engineering courses earlier in the program, the WSU model shifts the traditional emphasis on math prerequisite requirements to an emphasis on engineering motivation for …

Information systems students continue to struggle to successfully complete computer programming classes. Learning how to program is difficult, and failure and attrition rates in college level programming classes remain at an unacceptably high rate. Since many IS students take a programming course as part of their program of study, IS educators should better understand why IS students tend to achieve low success rates in programming courses and what can be done to improve success rates. Little research to date has addressed potential reasons for student failure in programming principles courses. Many educators simply assume that high failure rates are acceptable …
Survivable Traffic Grooming With Path Protection At The Connection Level In Wdm Mesh Networks, Wang Yao, Byrav Ramamurthy
Survivable Traffic Grooming With Path Protection At The Connection Level In Wdm Mesh Networks, Wang Yao, Byrav Ramamurthy
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Survivable traffic grooming (STG) is a promising approach to provide reliable and resource-efficient multigranularity connection services in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. In this paper, we study the STG problem in WDM mesh optical networks employing path protection at the connection level. Both dedicated-protection and shared-protection schemes are considered. Given network resources, the objective of the STG problem is to maximize network throughput. To enable survivability under various kinds of single failures, such as fiber cut and duct cut, we consider the general shared-risklink- group (SRLG) diverse routing constraints. We first resort to the integer-linear-programming (ILP) approach to obtain optimal solutions. …

Location Management In Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks Using Quorums And Clusters, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, David H.-C. Du, Ding-Zhu Du
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Position-based reactive routing is a scalable solution for routing in mobile ad hoc networks. The route discovery algorithm in position-based routing can be efficiently implemented only if the source knows the current address of the destination. In this paper, a quorum-based location management scheme is proposed. Location servers are selected using the minimum dominating set (MDS) approach, and are further organized into quorums for location update and location query. when a mobile node moves, it updates its location servers in the update quorum; when a node requests the location information of another node, it will send a query message to …

Availability Modeling And Evaluation On High Performance Cluster Computing Systems, Hertong Song
Doctoral Dissertations
Cluster computing has been attracting more and more attention from both the industrial and the academic world for its enormous computing power, cost effective, and scalability. Beowulf type cluster, for example, is a typical High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster system. Availability, as a key attribute of the system, needs to be considered at the system design stage and monitored at mission time. Moreover, system monitoring is a must to help identify the defects and ensure the system's availability requirement.
In this study, novel solutions which provide availability modeling, model evaluation, and data analysis as a single framework have been investigated. …
Nil Is Not Nothing: Recognition Of Chinese Network Informal Language Expressions, Yunqing Xia, Kam-Fai Wong, Wei Gao
Nil Is Not Nothing: Recognition Of Chinese Network Informal Language Expressions, Yunqing Xia, Kam-Fai Wong, Wei Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Informal language is actively used in network-mediated communication, e.g. chat room, BBS, email and text message. We refer the anomalous terms used in such context as network informal language (NIL) expressions. For example, “(ou3)” is used to replace “ᚒ(wo3)” in Chinese ICQ. Without unconventional resource, knowledge and techniques, the existing natural language processing approaches exhibit less effectiveness in dealing with NIL text. We propose to study NIL expressions with a NIL corpus and investigate techniques in processing NIL expressions. Two methods for Chinese NIL expression recognition are designed in NILER system. The experimental results show that pattern matching method produces …

The bulk power system is one of the largest man-made networks and its size makes control an extremely difficult task. This paper presents a method to control a power network using UPFCs set to levels determined by a maximum flow (max-flow) algorithm. The graph-theory-based max-flow is applied to the power system for UPFC placement and scheduling. A distributed version of max-flow is described to coordinate the actions of the UPFCs distributed in a power network. Two sample power systems were tested using max-flow for UPFC placement and settings. The resulting system characteristics are examined over all single-line contingencies and the …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Large Sequence Data Sets, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Keith Crandall, Quinn O. Snell
Faculty Publications
Phylogenetic analysis is an integral part of biological research. As the number of sequenced genomes increases, available data sets are growing in number and size. Several algorithms have been proposed to handle these larger data sets. A family of algorithms known as disc covering methods (DCMs), have been selected by the NSF funded CIPRes project to boost the performance of existing phylogenetic algorithms. Recursive Iterative Disc Covering Method 3 (Rec-I-DCM3), recursively decomposes the guide tree into subtrees, executing a phylogenetic search on the subtree and merging the subtrees, for a set number of iterations. This paper presents a detailed analysis …

Combinatorial Theorems About Embedding Trees On The Real Line, Amit Chakrabarti, Subhash Khot
Combinatorial Theorems About Embedding Trees On The Real Line, Amit Chakrabarti, Subhash Khot
Computer Science Technical Reports
We consider the combinatorial problem of embedding a tree metric into the real line with low distortion. For two special families of trees --- the family of complete binary trees and the family of subdivided stars --- we provide embeddings whose distortion is provably optimal, up to a constant factor. We also prove that the optimal distortion of a linear embedding of a tree can be arbitrarily low or high even when it has bounded degree.

A Quasi-Ptas For Unsplittable Flow On Line Graphs, Nikhil Bansal, Amit Chakrabarti, Amir Epstein, Baruch Schieber
Computer Science Technical Reports
We study the Unsplittable Flow Problem (UFP) on a line graph, focusing on the long-standing open question of whether the problem is APX-hard. We describe a deterministic quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme for UFP on line graphs, thereby ruling out an APX-hardness result, unless NP is contained in DTIME(2^polylog(n)). Our result requires a quasi-polynomial bound on all edge capacities and demands in the input instance. Earlier results on this problem included a polynomial time (2+epsilon)-approximation under the assumption that no demand exceeds any edge capacity (the "no-bottleneck assumption") and a super-constant integrality gap if this assumption did not hold. Unlike most …

The creation of detailed 3D buildings models, and to a greater extent the creation of entire city models, has become an area of considerable research over the last couple of decades. The accurate modeling of buildings has LBS (Location Based Services) applications in entertainment, planning, tourism and e-commerce to name just a few. Many modeling systems created to date require manual correspondences to be made across the image set in order to determine the models 3D structure. This paper describes SAMATS, a Semi-Automated Modeling And Texturing System, which has the capability of producing geometrically accurate and photorealistic building models without …
