High Accuracy Classification Of Eeg Signal, Wenjie Xu, Cuitai Guan, Chng Eng Siong, S. Ranganatha, Manoj Thulasidas, Jiankang Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Improving classification accuracy is a key issue to advancing brain computer interface (BCI) research from laboratory to real world applications. This article presents a high accuracy EEC signal classification method using single trial EEC signal to detect left and right finger movement. We apply an optimal temporal filter to remove irrelevant signal and subsequently extract key features from spatial patterns of EEG signal to perform classification. Specifically, the proposed method transforms the original EEG signal into a spatial pattern and applies the RBF feature selection method to generate robust feature. Classification is performed by the SVM and our experimental result …

Pre-Conference Proceedings Of The Focus Symposium On Intelligent Software Systems For The New Infostructure: Baden-Baden, Germany, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Over the past several years the papers in this annual series of symposia have increasingly centered on the realization of a human-computer collaboration environment in which computer-based software agents with reasoning capabilities provide meaningful support to human decision makers. It is therefore quite appropriate that the first paper in the 2004 Proceedings should address the historical evolutionary path of ‘intelligent’ software leading to the goal of a semantic Web environment. The realization of this goal is now in sight, driven by public security threats that are increasingly relying on technology for effective countermeasures.

The Evolution Of Intelligent Computer Software And The Semantic Web, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2004

The Evolution Of Intelligent Computer Software And The Semantic Web, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this paper is to trace the evolution of intelligent software from data-centric applications that essentially encapsulate their data environment to ontology-based applications with automated reasoning capabilities. The author draws a distinction between human intelligence and component capabilities within a more general definition of intelligence, which may be embedded in computer software. The primary vehicle in the quest for intelligent software has been the gradual recognition of the central role played by data and information, rather than the logic and functionality of the application. The three milestones in this evolution have been: the separation of data management from …

An Adaptive Mechanism For Improving File Transfer Performance, Eric Moss, Leen-Kiat Soh Jul 2004

An Adaptive Mechanism For Improving File Transfer Performance, Eric Moss, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

A variant of instance-based learning is described which detects periodic patterns in the presence of sparse data. A weighted average gives higher weight to values in the recent past as well as those at expected periods in the past. After each new measurement, the space of weights near the current set is searched for a set that minimizes the error of prediction, thus providing a learning mechanism. The method is described in terms of an application which minimizes file download times by choosing between available servers.

Using Permutations Instead Of Student’S T Distribution For P-Values In Paired-Difference Algorithm Comparisons, Tony R. Martinez, Joshua Menke Jul 2004

Using Permutations Instead Of Student’S T Distribution For P-Values In Paired-Difference Algorithm Comparisons, Tony R. Martinez, Joshua Menke

Faculty Publications

The paired-difference t-test is commonly used in the machine learning community to determine whether one learning algorithm is better than another on a given learning task. This paper suggests the use of the permutation test instead hecause it calculates the exact p-value instead of an estimate. The permutation test is also distribution free and the time complexity is trivial for the commonly used 10-fold cross-validation paired-difference test. Results of experiments on real-world problems suggest it is not uncommon to see the t-test estimate deviate up to 30-50% from the exact p-value.

Feature Weighting Using Neural Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng Jul 2004

Feature Weighting Using Neural Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng

Faculty Publications

In this work we propose a feature weighting method for classification tasks by extracting relevant information from a trained neural network. This method weights an attribute based on strengths (weights) of related links in the neural network, in which an important feature is typically connected to strong links and has more impact on the outputs. This method is applied to feature weighting br the nearest neighbor classifier and is tested on 15 real-world classification tasks. The results show that it can improve the nearest neighbor classifier on 14 of the 15 tested tasks, and also outperforms the neural network on …

Softprop: Softmax Neural Network Backpropagation Learning, Tony R. Martinez, Michael E. Rimer Jul 2004

Softprop: Softmax Neural Network Backpropagation Learning, Tony R. Martinez, Michael E. Rimer

Faculty Publications

Multi-layer backpropagation, like many learning algorithms that can create complex decision surfaces, is prone to overfitting. Softprop is a novel learning approach presented here that is reminiscent of the softmax explore-exploit Q-learning search heuristic It fits the problem while delaying settling into error minima to achieve better generalization and more robust learning. This is accomplished by blending standard SSE optimization with lazy training, a new objective function well suited to learning classification tasks, to form a more stable learning model. Over several machine learning data sets, softprop reduces classification error by 17.1 percent and the variance in results by 38.6 …

Transport Logistics Planning With Service-Level Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, K. M. Ng, Xintao Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study a logistics problem arising in military transport planning. A military organization operates a large fleet of vehicles in a depot to serve the requests of various operational units. Each request has a fixed start and end time, and is served by a prescribed number of vehicles. We address the following two problems: (1) how many vehicles are at least needed to meet a given service level of requests; and (2) suppose we allow each request to shift its start time by a constant duration, call all the requests be met? A Niche genetic algorithm, together …

Discovering Transcriptional Regulatory Rules From Gene Expression And Tf-Dna Binding Data By Decision Tree Learning, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang Jul 2004

Discovering Transcriptional Regulatory Rules From Gene Expression And Tf-Dna Binding Data By Decision Tree Learning, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Background: One of the most promising but challenging task in the post-genomic era is to reconstruct the transcriptional regulatory networks. The goal is to reveal, for each gene that responds to a certain biological event, which transcription factors affect its transcription, and how several transcription factors coordinate to accomplish specific regulations. Results: Here we propose a supervised machine learning approach to address these questions. We build decision trees to associate the expression level of a gene with the transcription factor binding data of its promoter. From the decision trees, we extract regulatory rules that specify how the binding of a …

Preserving Trust Across Multiple Sessions In Open Systems, Fuk-Wing Thomas Chan Jul 2004

Preserving Trust Across Multiple Sessions In Open Systems, Fuk-Wing Thomas Chan

Theses and Dissertations

Trust negotiation, a new authentication paradigm, enables strangers on the Internet to establish trust through the gradual disclosure of digital credentials and access control policies. Previous research in trust negotiation does not address issues in preserving trust across multiple sessions. This thesis discusses issues in preserving trust between parties who were previously considered strangers. It also describes the design and implementation of trust preservation in TrustBuilder, a prototype trust negotiation system. Preserving trust information can reduce the frequency and cost of renegotiation. A scenario is presented that demonstrates that a server supporting trust preservation can recoup the cost of the …

Web services are in the midst of making the transition from being a promising technology to being widely used in the industry. However, most efforts to use Web services have been manual, thus slowing down the ever changing and dynamic businesses of today. In this paper, we contend that more expressive descriptions of Web services will lead to greater automation and thus provide more agility to businesses. We present the METEOR-S front-end tools for source code annotation and semantic Web service description generation. We also present WSDL-S, a language created for incorporating semantic descriptions in the industry wide accepted WSDL, …

Grouping Search-Engine Returned Citations For Person-Name Queries, Reema Al-Kamha Jul 2004

Grouping Search-Engine Returned Citations For Person-Name Queries, Reema Al-Kamha

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we present a technique to group search-engine returned citations for person-name queries, such that the search-engine returned citations in each group belong to the same person. To group the returned citations we use a multi-faceted approach that considers evidence from three facets: (1) attributes, (2) links, and (3) page similarity. For each facet we generate a confidence matrix. Then we construct a final confidence matrix for all facets. Using a threshold, we apply a grouping algorithm on the final confidence matrix. The output is a group of search-engine returned citations, such that the citations in each group …

A Framework For Trajectory Based Visual Event Retrieval, Ilker Ersoy, Filiz Bunyak, S. R. Subramanya Jul 2004

A Framework For Trajectory Based Visual Event Retrieval, Ilker Ersoy, Filiz Bunyak, S. R. Subramanya

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a framework of a system for the query and retrieval of video data based on video events in huge video repositories. the events are formulated using domain-independent event primitives which are represented by spatio-temporal relationships between objects in the video scenes. Complex events are expressible as combinations of simpler events. This facilitates support of event queries from a variety of points of view. in addition, the framework is expected to provide adaptability of the framework to multiple domains.

Probabilistic Disease Classification Of Expression-Dependent Proteomic Data From Mass Spectrometry Of Human Serum, Ryan H. Lilien, Hany Farid, Bruce R. Donald Jul 2004

Probabilistic Disease Classification Of Expression-Dependent Proteomic Data From Mass Spectrometry Of Human Serum, Ryan H. Lilien, Hany Farid, Bruce R. Donald

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have developed an algorithm called Q5 for probabilistic classification of healthy vs. disease whole serum samples using mass spectrometry. The algorithm employs Principal Components Analysis (PCA) followed by Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) on whole spectrum Surface-Enhanced Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight (SELDI-TOF) Mass Spectrometry (MS) data, and is demonstrated on four real datasets from complete, complex SELDI spectra of human blood serum.

Q5 is a closed-form, exact solution to the problem of classification of complete mass spectra of a complex protein mixture. Q5 employs a novel probabilistic classification algorithm built upon a dimension-reduced linear discriminant analysis. Our solution is …

Workflow Management Systems And Erp Systems: Differences, Commonalities, And Applications, Jorge Cardoso, Robert P. Bostrom, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Two important classes of information systems, Workflow Management Systems(WfMSs) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, have been used to support e-business process redesign, integration, and management. While both technologies can help with business process automation, data transfer, and information sharing, the technological approach and features of solutions provided by WfMS and ERP are different. Currently, there is a lack of understanding of these two classes of information systems in the industry and academia, thus hindering their effective applications. In this paper, we present a comprehensive comparison between these two classes of systems. We discuss how the two types of systems …

Learning Mixture Models With The Regularized Latent Maximum Entropy Principle, Shaojun Wang, Dale Schuurmans, Fuchun Peng, Yunxin Zhao Jul 2004

Learning Mixture Models With The Regularized Latent Maximum Entropy Principle, Shaojun Wang, Dale Schuurmans, Fuchun Peng, Yunxin Zhao

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper presents a new approach to estimating mixture models based on a recent inference principle we have proposed: the latent maximum entropy principle (LME). LME is different from Jaynes' maximum entropy principle, standard maximum likelihood, and maximum a posteriori probability estimation. We demonstrate the LME principle by deriving new algorithms for mixture model estimation, and show how robust new variants of the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm can be developed. We show that a regularized version of LME (RLME), is effective at estimating mixture models. It generally yields better results than plain LME, which in turn is often better than …

Discovery Of Web Services In A Federated Registry Environment, Kaarthik Sivashanmugam, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The potential of a large scale growth of private and semi-private registries is creating the need for an infrastructure which can support discovery and publication over a group of autonomous registries. Recent versions of UDDI have made changes to accommodate interactions between distributed registries. In this paper, we discuss METEOR-S Web service Discovery Infrastructure, which provides an ontology-based infrastructure to access a group of registries that are divided based on business domains and grouped into federations. We also discuss how Web service discovery is carried out within a federation.

Taking Dcop To The Real World: Efficient Complete Solutions For Distributed Event Scheduling, Rajiv Maheswaran, Milind Tambe, Emma Bowring, Jonathan Pearce, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed Constraint Optimization (DCOP) is an elegant formalism relevant to many areas in multiagent systems, yet complete algorithms have not been pursued for real world applications due to perceived complexity. To capably capture a rich class of complex problem domains, we introduce the Distributed Multi-Event Scheduling (DiMES) framework and design congruent DCOP formulations with binary constraints which are proven to yield the optimal solution. To approach real-world efficiency requirements, we obtain immense speedups by improving communication structure and precomputing best case bounds. Heuristics for generating better communication structures and calculating bound in a distributed manner are provided and tested on …

Neural Network Stabilizing Control Of Single Machine Power System With Control Limits, Wenxin Liu, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power system stabilizers are widely used to generate supplementary control signals for the excitation system in order to damp out the low frequency oscillations. This paper proposes a stable neural network (NN) controller for the stabilization of a single machine infinite bus power system. In the power system control literature, simplified analytical models are used to represent the power system and the controller designs are not based on rigorous stability analysis. This work overcomes the two major problems by using an accurate analytical model for controller development and presents the closed-loop stability analysis. The NN is used to approximate the …

Qos Provisioning For Multi-Class Traffic In Wireless Networks, Mona El-Kadi Rizvi Jul 2004

Qos Provisioning For Multi-Class Traffic In Wireless Networks, Mona El-Kadi Rizvi

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Physical constraints, bandwidth constraints and host mobility all contribute to the difficulty of providing Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in wireless networks. There is a growing demand for wireless networks to support all the services that are available on wired networks. These diverse services, such as email, instant messaging, web browsing, video conferencing, telephony and paging all place different demands on the network, making QoS provisioning for wireless networks that carry multiple classes of traffic a complex problem. We have developed a set of admission control and resource reservation schemes for QoS provisioning in multi-class wireless networks.

We present three …

Learning Multiple Correct Classifications From Incomplete Data Using Weakened Implicit Negatives, Dan A. Ventura, Stephen Whiting Jul 2004

Learning Multiple Correct Classifications From Incomplete Data Using Weakened Implicit Negatives, Dan A. Ventura, Stephen Whiting

Faculty Publications

Classification problems with output class overlap create problems for standard neural network approaches. We present a modification of a simple feed-forward neural network that is capable of learning problems with output overlap, including problems exhibiting hierarchical class structures in the output. Our method of applying weakened implicit negatives to address overlap and ambiguity allows the algorithm to learn a large portion of the hierarchical structure from very incomplete data. Our results show an improvement of approximately 58% over a standard backpropagation network on the hierarchical problem.

Probing The Posthuman: Richard Powers' Galatea 2.2 And The Mind-Body Problem, Miranda Campbell

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

In this paper, Miranda Campbell discusses Richard Powers' novel Galatea 2.2 and argues that this work is situated at the intersection of the posthumanist and humanist discourses. Campbell examines Powers' approach to the mind-body problem, his interrogation of the limits and limitations of posthumanism, and its dissolution of the importance of the body, difference, and agency. In the posthuman setting of the Center for Advanced Science of this novel, scientists integrate the mind into the body through its designation as a mechanically functioning brain. At the Center, the binary of human and machine begins to erode with the …

Plone And Content Management, George K. Thiruvathukal, Konstantin Läufer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this column, the authors look at Plone, which they feel is one of the best content management systems available today. Even better, it?s distributed under a free open-source license: the cost of getting started is only limited to the time you have available to set up the software on a server. Plone is written in Python and uses the Zope application server infrastructure; it runs on most modern operating systems. The authors have even set it up at Loyola University Chicago in the Department of Computer Science. Besides being two faculty members who rely on Plone to host all …
