Detection Of Land Use Change In Lake Maumelle Watershed Critical Management Area: Image Processing And Gis Integration Approach, Ling Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Land use in the Lake Maumelle watershed is expected to undergo significant changes in the next several decades, with residential developments replacing forest in many areas. These land use changes have the potential to increase pollutant loads and degrade water quality in the lake. Detecting the land use and land cover changes is therefore a critical requirement for effective land management. Therefore, the research on the cost-effective methodology of detection of land use change is critical and of extreme significance. The first objective of this study is to develop an effective image classification method using very high resolution remote sensing …
Elucidation And Improvement Of Algorithms For Mass Spectrometry Isotope Trace Detection, Robert Anthony Smith
Elucidation And Improvement Of Algorithms For Mass Spectrometry Isotope Trace Detection, Robert Anthony Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Mass spectrometry facilitates cutting edge advancements in many fields. Although instrumentation has advanced dramatically in the last 100 years, data processing algorithms have not kept pace. Without sensitive and accurate signal segmentation algorithms, the utility of mass spectrometry is limited. In this dissertation, we provide an overview and analysis of mass spectrometry data processing. A tutorial to ease the learning curve for those outside the field is provided. We draw attention to the lack of critical evaluation in the field and describe the resulting effects, including a glut of algorithm contributions of questionable novel contribution. To facilitate increased critical evaluation, …
Distributed Gui Testing Of Ios Applications With Hadoopunit, Krissada Dechokul
Distributed Gui Testing Of Ios Applications With Hadoopunit, Krissada Dechokul
Theses and Dissertations
Smartphones have become an important medium of communication for millions of people. They have come to expect high-quality mobile applications, which have increased the importance of software testing in modern software development. While software testing can ensure the quality of a system under test (SUT), it has suffered from lengthy execution time, especially for system-level GUI testing. In general, system-level GUI testing can be time-consuming because it requires walking through every user interface element and every possible variation that users could experience through the GUI of the application. In addition, this type of testing exercises the SUT from the outside …
Ensemble Methods For Historical Machine-Printed Document Recognition, William B. Lund
Ensemble Methods For Historical Machine-Printed Document Recognition, William B. Lund
Theses and Dissertations
The usefulness of digitized documents is directly related to the quality of the extracted text. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has reached a point where well-formatted and clean machine- printed documents are easily recognizable by current commercial OCR products; however, older or degraded machine-printed documents present problems to OCR engines resulting in word error rates (WER) that severely limit either automated or manual use of the extracted text. Major archives of historical machine-printed documents are being assembled around the globe, requiring an accurate transcription of the text for the automated creation of descriptive metadata, full-text searching, and information extraction. Given document …

An Analysis Of Eye Movements With Helmet Mounted Displays, Kalyn A. Tung
An Analysis Of Eye Movements With Helmet Mounted Displays, Kalyn A. Tung
Theses and Dissertations
Helmet or Head-Mounted Displays (HMD) applications have expanded to include a range from advanced military cockpits to consumer glasses. However, users have documented loss of legibility while undergoing vibration. Recent research indicates that undesirable eye movement is related to the vibration frequency a user experiences. In vibrating environments, two competing eye reflexes likely contribute to eye movements. The Vestibulo-ocular Reflex responds to motion sensed in the otoliths while the pursuit reflex is driven by the visual system to maintain the desired image on the fovea. This study attempts to isolate undesirable eye motions that occur while using a HMD by …
A Recommender System In The Cyber Defense Domain, Katherine B. Lyons
A Recommender System In The Cyber Defense Domain, Katherine B. Lyons
Theses and Dissertations
In the cyber domain, network defenders have traditionally been placed in a reactionary role. Before a defender can act they must wait for an attack to occur and identify the attack. This places the defender at a disadvantage in a cyber attack situation and it is certainly desirable that the defender out maneuver the attacker before the network has been compromised. The goal of this research is to determine the value of employing a recommender system as an attack predictor, and determine the best configuration of a recommender system for the cyber defense domain. The most important contribution of this …
Pwm: A Secure Webmail System Designed For Easy Adoption, Benjamin W. Burgon
Pwm: A Secure Webmail System Designed For Easy Adoption, Benjamin W. Burgon
Theses and Dissertations
None of the three largest webmail service providers (serving over 1 billion users) support end-to-end message encryption. Encrypted email has never seen mass adoption because it is prohibitive for non-experts to use. Private WebMail (Pwm) is our extension to popular webmail systems that lets users easily encrypt sensitive messages without having to first contact the recipient and share information. It is designed to spread quickly in a grassroots fashion so that a user receiving their first encrypted message can quickly and easily start using the system. This thesis describes the design and implementation of Pwm, then measures its usability through …
Complexity, Heuristic, And Search Analysis For The Games Of Crossings And Epaminondas, David W. King Jr.
Complexity, Heuristic, And Search Analysis For The Games Of Crossings And Epaminondas, David W. King Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Games provide fertile research domains for algorithmic research. Often, game research helps solve real-world problems through the testing and refinement of search algorithms in game domains. Other times, game research finds limits for certain algorithms. For example, the game of Go proved intractable for the Min-Max with Alpha-Beta pruning algorithm leading to the popularity of Monte-Carlo based search algorithms. Although effective in Go, and game domains once ruled by Alpha-Beta such as Lines of Action, Monte-Carlo methods appear to have limits too as they fall short in tactical domains such as Hex and Chess. In a continuation of this type …
Managing Autonomy By Hierarchically Managing Information: Autonomy And Information At The Right Time And The Right Place, Rongbin Lin
Theses and Dissertations
When working with a complex AI or robotics system in a specific application, users often need to incorporate their special domain knowledge into the autonomous system. Such needs call for the ability to manage autonomy. However, managing autonomy can be a difficult task because the internal mechanisms and algorithms of the autonomous components may be beyond the users' understanding. We propose an approach where users manage autonomy indirectly by managing information provided to the intelligent system hierarchically at three different temporal scales: strategic, between-episodes, and within-episode. Information management tools at multiple temporal scales allow users to influence the autonomous behaviors …

Reading is a fundamental skill that each person needs to develop during early childhood and continue to enhance into adulthood. While children/teenagers depend on this skill to advance academically and become educated individuals, adults are expected to acquire a certain level of proficiency in reading so that they can engage in social/civic activities and successfully participate in the workforce. A step towards assisting individuals to become lifelong readers is to provide them adequate reading selections which can cultivate their intellectual and emotional growth. Turning to (web) search engines for such reading choices can be overwhelming, given the huge volume of …
Optimizing Ad-Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (Aodv) Routing Protocol Using Geographical Location Data, Remo Cocco
Optimizing Ad-Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (Aodv) Routing Protocol Using Geographical Location Data, Remo Cocco
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis summarizes the body of research regarding location-aided routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET). This study focuses on the use of geographical location information to reduce the control traffic overhead caused by the route discovery process in the ad-hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol. During this process, AODV will flood the entire network with route request packets. This introduces significant packet-handling overhead into the network. This thesis introduces Geographical AODV (GeoAODV), which uses geographical location information to limit the search area during the route discovery process to include only promising search paths. Also, this thesis benchmarks GeoAODV's …

An Investigation Of Complex Systems In 16 Dimensions, Jordon M. Huffman
An Investigation Of Complex Systems In 16 Dimensions, Jordon M. Huffman
Theses and Dissertations
Sir Isaac Newton studied the world around him. He observed unexplainable phenomena that the math of his time could not prove. With the help of Gottfried Leibniz, he created infinitesimal calculus to prove his theories. The new concepts he created revolutionized science, and opened new realms of science previously unthought of. In 2002, Dr. Stephen Wolfram published A New Kind of Science, He argues that the processes of understanding cellular automata can be applied to other aspects of science. Dr. Rodrigo Obando of Columbus State University took Dr. Wolfram's work and dissected it. By breaking down the rules, he started …
Discovering Spam On Twitter, Ioana-Alexandra Bara
Discovering Spam On Twitter, Ioana-Alexandra Bara
Theses and Dissertations
Twitter generates the majority of its revenue from advertising. Third parties pay to have their products advertised on Twitter through: tweets, accounts and trends. However, spammers can use Sybil accounts (fake accounts) [21] to advertise and avoid paying for it. Sybil accounts are highly active on Twitter performing advertising campaigns to serve their clients [5]. They aggressively try to reach a large audience to maximize their influence. These accounts have similar behavior if controlled by the same master. Most of their spam tweets include a shortened URL to trick users into clicking on it. Also, since they share resources with …
Web Service Transaction Correctness, Aspen Olmsted
Web Service Transaction Correctness, Aspen Olmsted
Theses and Dissertations
In our research we investigate the problem of providing consistency, availability and durability for Web Service transactions. First, we show that the popular lazy replica update propagation method is vulnerable to loss of transactional updates in the presence of hardware failures. We propose an extension to the lazy update propagation approach to reduce the risk of data loss. Our approach is based on the "buddy" system, requiring that updates are preserved synchronously in two replicas, called buddies. The rest of the replicas are updated using lazy update propagation protocols. Our method provides a balance between durability (i.e., effects of the …
Parallel Processing Of Fully Homomorphic Encryption For A Cloud Environment, Ryan Hayward
Parallel Processing Of Fully Homomorphic Encryption For A Cloud Environment, Ryan Hayward
Theses and Dissertations
Cloud computing is a boon for both business and private use, but data security concerns slow its adoption. Fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) offers the means by which cloud computing can be performed on encrypted data, obviating the data security concerns. FHE is not without its cost, as FHE operations take orders of magnitude more processing time and memory than the same operations on unencrypted data. Cloud computing can be leveraged to reduce the time taken by bringing to bear parallel processing. This thesis presents an implementatation of a processing dispatcher which takes an iterative set of operations on FHE encrypted …

Shaping Swarms Through Coordinated Mediation, Shin-Young Jung
Shaping Swarms Through Coordinated Mediation, Shin-Young Jung
Theses and Dissertations
A swarm is a group of uninformed individuals that exhibit collective behaviors. Without any information about the external world, a swarm has limited ability to achieve complex goals. Prior work on human-swarm interaction methods allow a human to influence these uninformed individuals through either leadership or predation as informed agents that directly interact with humans. These methods of influence have two main limitations: (1) although leaders sustain influence over nominal agents for a long period of time, they tend to cause all collective structures to turn in to flocks (negating the benefit of other swarm formations) and (2) predators tend …

A Novel Spam Campaign In Online Social Networks, Yufeng Zhen
Theses and Dissertations
The increasing popularity of the Online Social Networks (OSNs)\nomenclature{$OSNs$}{Online Social Networks} has made the OSNs major targets of spammers. They aim to illegally gather private information from users and spread spam to them. In this paper, we propose a new spam campaign that includes following key steps: creating fake accounts, picking legitimate accounts, forming friendships, earning trust, and spreading spam. The unique part in our spam campaign is the process of earning trust. By using social bots, we significantly lower the cost of earning trust and make it feasible in the real world. By spreading spam at a relatively low …
The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model For Fast, Accurate, Non-Linear Elasticity, Anthony R. Hall
The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model For Fast, Accurate, Non-Linear Elasticity, Anthony R. Hall
Theses and Dissertations
We introduce to computer graphics the Pseudo-Rigid-Body Mechanism (PRBM) and the chain algorithm from mechanical engineering, with a unified tutorial from disparate source materials. The PRBM has been used successfully to simplify the simulation of non-linearly elastic beams, using deflections of an analogous spring and rigid-body linkage. It offers computational efficiency as well as an automatic parameterization in terms of physically measurable, intuitive inputs which fit naturally into existing animation work flows for character articulation. The chain algorithm is a technique for simulating the deflection of complicated elastic bodies in terms of straight elastic elements, which has recently been extended …
