Algorithms For Robot Coverage Under Movement And Sensing Constraints, Jeremy S. Lewis
Algorithms For Robot Coverage Under Movement And Sensing Constraints, Jeremy S. Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the problem of generating coverage paths—that is, paths that pass within some sensor footprint of every point in an environment—for mobile robots. It both considers models for which navigation is a solved problem but motions are constrained, as well for models in which navigation must be considered along with coverage planning because of the robot’s unreliable sensing and movements.
The motion constraint we adopt for the former is a common constraint, that of a Dubins vehicle. We extend previous work that solves this coverage problem as a traveling salesman problem (TSP) by introducing a practical heuristic algorithm …

Certificate Revocation Table: Leveraging Locality Of Reference In Web Requests To Improve Tls Certificate Revocation, Luke Austin Dickinson
Theses and Dissertations
X.509 certificate revocation defends against man-in-the-middle attacks involving a compromised certificate. Certificate revocation strategies face scalability, effectiveness, and deployment challenges as HTTPS adoption rates have soared. We propose Certificate Revocation Table (CRT), a new revocation strategy that is competitive with or exceeds alternative state-of-the-art solutions in effectiveness, efficiency, certificate growth scalability, mass revocation event scalability, revocation timeliness, privacy, and deployment requirements. The CRT periodically checks the revocation status of X.509 certificates recently used by an organization, such as clients on a university's private network. By prechecking the revocation status of each certificate the client is likely to use, the client …

Breaking Down The Barriers To Operator Workload Estimation: Advancing Algorithmic Handling Of Temporal Non-Stationarity And Cross-Participant Differences For Eeg Analysis Using Deep Learning, Ryan G. Hefron
Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on two barriers to using EEG data for workload assessment: day-to-day variability, and cross- participant applicability. Several signal processing techniques and deep learning approaches are evaluated in multi-task environments. These methods account for temporal, spatial, and frequential data dependencies. Variance of frequency- domain power distributions for cross-day workload classification is statistically significant. Skewness and kurtosis are not significant in an environment absent workload transitions, but are salient with transitions present. LSTMs improve day- to-day feature stationarity, decreasing error by 59% compared to previous best results. A multi-path convolutional recurrent model using bi-directional, residual recurrent layers significantly increases …
A Methodology For Evaluating Relational And Nosql Databases For Small-Scale Storage And Retrieval, Ryan D. Engle
A Methodology For Evaluating Relational And Nosql Databases For Small-Scale Storage And Retrieval, Ryan D. Engle
Theses and Dissertations
Modern systems record large quantities of electronic data capturing time-ordered events, system state information, and behavior. Subsequent analysis enables historic and current system status reporting, supports fault investigations, and may provide insight for emerging system trends. Unfortunately, the management of log data requires ever more efficient and complex storage tools to access, manipulate, and retrieve these records. Truly effective solutions also require a well-planned architecture supporting the needs of multiple stakeholders. Historically, database requirements were well-served by relational data models, however modern, non-relational databases, i.e. NoSQL, solutions, initially intended for “big data” distributed system may also provide value for smaller-scale …

Theses and Dissertations
Space object detection is of great importance in the highly dependent yet competitive and congested space domain. Detection algorithms employed play a crucial role in fulfilling the detection component in the space situational awareness mission to detect, track, characterize and catalog unknown space objects. Many current space detection algorithms use a matched filter or a spatial correlator on long exposure data to make a detection decision at a single pixel point of a spatial image based on the assumption that the data follows a Gaussian distribution. This research focuses on improving current space object detection algorithms and developing new algorithms …

The new framework allows communication through REST calls to a server controlling the robot and also tests direct commands to the robot controller to evaluate the overhead of all communication methods.
Information Foraging Through The Analysis Of Semantic Network Topology, Phillip J. Dibona
Information Foraging Through The Analysis Of Semantic Network Topology, Phillip J. Dibona
Theses and Dissertations
Information seekers are posed with multiple challenges in gathering an unbiased and comprehensive body of information. The costs of analyzing documents often drive searches toward a small subset of documents. Additionally, modern search tools may reinforce the confirmation bias of users by providing only those documents that closely match their search query. The end result is a decision or hypothesis that is ill-considered and substantiated by potentially biased information. Information seekers need an information foraging tool that can help them explore the document corpus to find relevant topics and text snippets, while finding the hidden information that may be buried …

The security of computer programs and systems is a very critical issue. Threats against computer networks and software are on the rise. Therefore, businesses and IT professionals should take steps to ensure that their information systems are as secure as possible. However, many programmers and software engineers do not think about adding security to their programs until their projects are near completion, which results in vulnerable and insecure systems that could be exploited by attackers. This dissertation presents a recommender system to help programmers write more secure code. We created a model that mines and categories source code from existing …
A Study Of Cloud Haskell With Applications To Mapreduce, Shreyas Ramnath
A Study Of Cloud Haskell With Applications To Mapreduce, Shreyas Ramnath
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we developed a MapReduce application for performing word count in files. We compared the performance of the implementations done using Control.Parallel - built-in Haskell library for parallel/concurrent computations, Cloud Haskell - a distributed framework/DSL for Haskell and the Java Streams API (immutable datatypes). During profiling of our implementations, we found that for a lower number of words in input files the difference in speed of the Control.Parallel and Cloud Haskell implementations were negligible. So to get a better idea we profiled the implementations 12 times for each word size (excluded the highest and lowest values) in the …
An Algorithm For Symbolic Computing Of Singular Limits Of Dynamical Systems, Dane Jordan Bjork
An Algorithm For Symbolic Computing Of Singular Limits Of Dynamical Systems, Dane Jordan Bjork
Theses and Dissertations
The manifold boundary approximation method, MBAM is a new technique used in approximating systems of equations using parameter reduction. This method and other approximation methods are introduced and described. Several current issues in performing MBAM are discussed in further detail. These issues significantly slow down the process of MBAM and create a barrier of entry for those wishing to use the method without a strong background in mathematics. A solution is proposed to automatically reparameterize models and evaluate specific types of variables approaching limits -- significantly speeding up the process of MBAM. An implementation of the solution is discussed.

Standardizing The Requirements Specification Of Multi-Agent Systems, Khaled Ali M Slhoub
Standardizing The Requirements Specification Of Multi-Agent Systems, Khaled Ali M Slhoub
Theses and Dissertations
Development of multi-agent systems is negatively impacted by the lack of process standardization across the major development phases, such as the requirements analysis phase. This issue creates a key barrier for agent technology stakeholders regarding comprehending and analyzing complexity associated with agent-oriented specification. Instead, such fundamental low-level infrastructure is loosely attended to in an ad-hoc fashion, and important aspects of requirements analysis are often neglected altogether. The IEEE Std 830 model is a recommended practice aimed at describing how to write better quality requirements specification of conventional software. Knowing that agent-based computing is a natural evolution of the conventional approaches …
A Comprehensive Data-Driven Characterization Of Organ Transplantation, Diego Marconi Pinheiro Ferreira Silva
A Comprehensive Data-Driven Characterization Of Organ Transplantation, Diego Marconi Pinheiro Ferreira Silva
Theses and Dissertations
Organ transplantation yearly saves thousands of lives worldwide; yet, 22 people still die each day only in the USA due to the ever-increasing imbalance between the supply and demand of organs. Currently, this organ-allocation gap is mainly tackled by optimally allocating organs based on major survivability factors (i.e., efficiency), by providing the population equal access to transplantation (i.e., equity), and by promoting population health literacy (i.e., awareness). Efficiency, equity, and awareness impact each other; yet, the state-of-the-art in organ transplantation still lacks the characterization of awareness, and the trade-off between these aspects are not fully-understood. Given the current availability of …

This dissertation covers four data mining problems with applications in decision support based on user activity data. The first problem is an efficient approach to maximizing spread of information in social networks with applications in decision support for marketing where the goal is to find the best set of users, based on a limited budget, to maximize the word of mouth. The data for this problem is based on user activities in social networks that lead to formation of friendship (or follower-followee) graphs. The second problem is identifying action-outcome relationships to facilitate building a knowledge base of actions that could …
Machine Learning For Inspired, Structured, Lyrical Music Composition, Paul Mark Bodily
Machine Learning For Inspired, Structured, Lyrical Music Composition, Paul Mark Bodily
Theses and Dissertations
Computational creativity has been called the "final frontier" of artificial intelligence due to the difficulty inherent in defining and implementing creativity in computational systems. Despite this difficulty computer creativity is becoming a more significant part of our everyday lives, in particular music. This is observed in the prevalence of music recommendation systems, co-creational music software packages, smart playlists, and procedurally-generated video games. Significant progress can be seen in the advances in industrial applications such as Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, etc., but several problems persist. Of more general interest, however, is the question of whether or not computers can exhibit autonomous …

Autonomous systems are increasingly being used for complex tasks in dynamic environments. Robust automation needs to be able to establish its current goal and determine when the goal has changed. In human-machine teams autonomous goal detection is an important component of maintaining shared situational awareness between both parties. This research investigates how different categories of goals affect autonomous change detection in a dynamic environment. In order to accomplish this goal, a set of autonomous agents were developed to perform within an environment with multiple possible goals. The agents perform the environmental task while monitoring for goal changes. The experiment tests …
Efficient Phase Retrieval For Off-Axis Point Spread Functions, Salome Esteban Carrasco
Efficient Phase Retrieval For Off-Axis Point Spread Functions, Salome Esteban Carrasco
Theses and Dissertations
A novel pairing of phase retrieval tools allows for efficient estimation of pupil phase in optical systems from images of point spread functions (PSFs). The phase retrieval algorithm uses correlation of modeled phase in the focal plane to decouple aberrations that are difficult to identify in complex PSFs. The use of a phase kernel that departs from the Fresnel approximation for off-axis PSFs is a more accurate representation of wavefront phase in finite conjugate imaging. The combination of the approximation and phase correlation algorithm can be more efficient and accurate than generic algorithms.

An Authentication Framework For Wearable Devices, Abdullah Alharbi
An Authentication Framework For Wearable Devices, Abdullah Alharbi
Theses and Dissertations
The popularity of wearable devices (WDs) has been growing rapidly in recent years because of the convenience they add to users lives. Although WDs may be considered an extension of mobile computing devices (e.g., smartphones), their form factor is very different: WDs are always available and expected to be accessible, and they often lack typical input means such as a keyboard. Therefore, they need to be treated, in terms of authentication, differently than other computing devices since we cannot simply apply possibly unsuitable traditional authentication methods such as password that were designed for other modalities. In this dissertation, we introduce …
A Novel Approach To Containerize Existing Applications, Vineet Haresh Palan
A Novel Approach To Containerize Existing Applications, Vineet Haresh Palan
Theses and Dissertations
Cloud computing has dominated the way different services are offered, utilized and managed over the internet. Typically, applications run inside the virtual machines in an isolated environment. However, there is always a hardware virtualization overhead for running these virtual machines. Recently, Linux containers have gathered attention because of their significantly lower overhead when compared with VM through OS-level virtualization. They mainly provide high availability, isolation, portability, interoperability and scalability. Thus, everyone is trying to move their existing applications onto Linux containers with the help of available tools and framework. However, these tools fail to gather all the relevant information required …
