Duplicate Bug Report Detection With A Combination Of Information Retrieval And Topic Modeling, Anh Tuan Nguyen, Tung Nguyen, Tien Nguyen, David Lo, Chengnian Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Detecting duplicate bug reports helps reduce triaging efforts and save time for developers in fixing the same issues. Among several automated detection approaches, text-based information retrieval (IR) approaches have been shown to outperform others in term of both accuracy and time efficiency. However, those IR-based approaches do not detect well the duplicate reports on the same technical issues written in different descriptive terms. This paper introduces DBTM, a duplicate bug report detection approach that takes advantage of both IR-based features and topic-based features. DBTM models a bug report as a textual document describing certain technical issue(s), and models duplicate bug …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Microblogging has recently become a popular means to disseminate information among millions of people. Interestingly, software developers also use microblog to communicate with one another. Different from traditional media, microblog users tend to focus on recency and informality of content. Many tweet contents are relatively more personal and Opinionated, compared to that of traditional news report. Thus, by analyzing microblogs, one could get the up-to-date information about what people are interested in or feel toward a particular topic. In this paper, we describe our microblog observatory that aggregates more than 70,000 Twitter feeds, captures software-related tweets, and computes trends from …

Interactive Fault Localization Leveraging Simple User Feedback, Liang Gong, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Hongyu Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Millions of people, including those in the software engineering communities have turned to microblogging services, such as Twitter, as a means to quickly disseminate information. A number of past studies by Treude et al., Storey, and Yuan et al. have shown that a wealth of interesting information is stored in these microblogs. However, microblogs also contain a large amount of noisy content that are less relevant to software developers in engineering software systems. In this work, we perform a preliminary study to investigate the feasibility of automatic classification of microblogs into two categories: relevant and irrelevant to engineering software systems. …

Diversity Maximization Speedup For Fault Localization, Liang Gong, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Hongyu Zhang Sep 2012

Diversity Maximization Speedup For Fault Localization, Liang Gong, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Hongyu Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Fault localization is useful for reducing debugging effort. However, many fault localization techniques require non-trivial number of test cases with oracles, which can determine whether a program behaves correctly for every test input. Test oracle creation is expensive because it can take much manual labeling effort. Given a number of test cases to be executed, it is challenging to minimize the number of test cases requiring manual labeling and in the meantime achieve good fault localization accuracy. To address this challenge, this paper presents a novel test case selection strategy based on Diversity Maximization Speedup (DMS). DMS orders a set …

To What Extent Could We Detect Field Defects? An Empirical Study Of False Negatives In Static Bug Finding Tools, Ferdian Thung, Lucia Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Premkumar Devanbu, Foyzur Rahman Sep 2012

To What Extent Could We Detect Field Defects? An Empirical Study Of False Negatives In Static Bug Finding Tools, Ferdian Thung, Lucia Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Premkumar Devanbu, Foyzur Rahman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software defects can cause much loss. Static bug-finding tools are believed to help detect and remove defects. These tools are designed to find programming errors; but, do they in fact help prevent actual defects that occur in the field and reported by users? If these tools had been used, would they have detected these field defects, and generated warnings that would direct programmers to fix them? To answer these questions, we perform an empirical study that investigates the effectiveness of state-of-the-art static bug finding tools on hundreds of reported and fixed defects extracted from three open source programs: Lucene, Rhino, …

Kbe-Anonymity: Test Data Anonymization For Evolving Programs, Lucia Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Aditya Budi Sep 2012

Kbe-Anonymity: Test Data Anonymization For Evolving Programs, Lucia Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Aditya Budi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High-quality test data that is useful for effective testing is often available on users’ site. However, sharing data owned by users with software vendors may raise privacy concerns. Techniques are needed to enable data sharing among data owners and the vendors without leaking data privacy. Evolving programs bring additional challenges because data may be shared multiple times for every version of a program. When multiple versions of the data are cross-referenced, private information could be inferred. Although there are studies addressing the privacy issue of data sharing for testing and debugging, little work has explicitly addressed the challenges when programs …

Verifying Total Correctness Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt, Detlef Plump Sep 2012

Verifying Total Correctness Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt, Detlef Plump

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

GP 2 is an experimental nondeterministic programming language based on graph transformation rules, allowing for visual programming and the solving of graph problems at a high-level of abstraction. In previous work we demonstrated how to verify graph programs using a Hoare-style proof calculus, but only partial correctness was considered. In this paper, we add new proof rules and termination functions, which allow for proofs to additionally guarantee that program executions always terminate (weak total correctness), or that programs always terminate and do so without failure (total correctness). We show that the new proof rules are sound with respect to the …

Verification Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt Sep 2012

Verification Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

GP (for Graph Programs) is an experimental nondeterministic programming language which allows for the manipulation of graphs at a high level of abstraction. The program states of GP are directed labelled graphs. These are manipulated directly via the application of (conditional) rule schemata, which generalise double-pushout rules with expressions over labels and relabelling. In contrast with graph grammars, the application of these rule schemata is directed by a number of simple control constructs including sequential composition, conditionals, and as-long-as-possible iteration. GP shields programmers at all times from low-level implementation issues (e.g. graph representation), and with its nondeterministic semantics, allows one …

Extending A Mobile Device's Interaction Space Through Body-Centric Interaction, Xiang Chen, Nicolai Marquardt, Anthony Tang, Sebastian Boring, Saul Greenberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modern mobile devices rely on the screen as a primary input modality. Yet the small screen real-estate limits interaction possibilities, motivating researchers to explore alternate input techniques. Within this arena, our goal is to develop Body-Centric Interaction with Mobile Devices: a class of input techniques that allow a person to position and orient her mobile device to navigate and manipulate digital content anchored in the space on and around the body. To achieve this goal, we explore such interaction in a bottom-up path of prototypes and implementations. From our experiences, as well as by examining related work, we discuss and …

The Fat Thumb: Using The Thumb's Contact Size For Single-Handed Mobile Interaction, Sebastian Boring, David Ledo, Xiang ‘Anthony’ Chen, Nicolai Marquardt, Anthony Tang, Saul Greenberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modern mobile devices allow a rich set of multi-finger interactions that combine modes into a single fluid act, for example, one finger for panning blending into a two-finger pinch gesture for zooming. Such gestures require the use of both hands: one holding the device while the other is interacting. While on the go, however, only one hand may be available to both hold the device and interact with it. This mostly limits interaction to a single-touch (i.e., the thumb), forcing users to switch between input modes explicitly. In this paper, we contribute the Fat Thumb interaction technique, which uses the …

Such gestures may require the use of both hands: one holding the device while the other is interacting. While on the go, however, only one hand may be available to both hold the device and interact with it. In this demo, we present the Fat Thumb interaction technique, which uses the thumb's contact size as a form of simulated pressure. We present how this can be used, for example, to integrate panning and zooming into a single interaction. Contact size determines the …

Niche-Seeking In Influence Maximization With Adversary, Long Foong Liow, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In hotly contested product categories dominated by a few powerful firms, it is quite common for weaker or late entrants to focus only on particular segments of the whole market. The rationale for such strategy is intuitive: to avoid direct confrontation with heavy-weight firms, and to concentrate in segments where these weaker firms have comparative advantages. In marketing, this is what people called “go niche or go home". The niche-building strategy may rely on “homophily", which implies that consumers in a particular market segment might possess certain set of attributes that cause them to appreciate certain products better (in other …

(Hidden) Social Influences In Switching Mobile Service Platforms, Virpi K. Tuunainen, Tuure Tuunanen, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

During the past few years, the mobile industry has gone through a radical change from business focusing on excellence in device manufacturing and supply chain management to ecosystems around successful focal players, such as Apple and Google, controlling these service platforms. In order to compete in this environment, these firms need to understand what makes a consumer switch between these mobile service platforms. To that end, we conducted an inductive qualitative study with university students from Finland and USA as subjects (142 altogether), delving into how and why consumers switch mobile phones, and what are the factors affecting their decisions. …

Modeling Concept Dynamics For Large Scale Music Search, Jialie Shen, Hwee Hwa Pang, Meng Wang, Shuicheng Yan Aug 2012

Modeling Concept Dynamics For Large Scale Music Search, Jialie Shen, Hwee Hwa Pang, Meng Wang, Shuicheng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Continuing advances in data storage and communication technologies have led to an explosive growth in digital music collections. To cope with their increasing scale, we need effective Music Information Retrieval (MIR) capabilities like tagging, concept search and clustering. Integral to MIR is a framework for modelling music documents and generating discriminative signatures for them. In this paper, we introduce a multimodal, layered learning framework called DMCM. Distinguished from the existing approaches that encode music as an ensemble of order-less feature vectors, our framework extracts from each music document a variety of acoustic features, and translates them into low-level encodings over …

Adaptive Display Power Management For Oled Displays, Kiat Wee Tan, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile gaming has become increasingly popular in the past few years with the proliferation of smartphones that have the increased CPU, memory, and network (3.5G etc.) capabilities to support a vast range of interesting games. In addition, these phones also have high quality displays, such as Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) displays, that allow the intricate details in games to be shown in vivid detail to end users. Unfortunately, these displays tend to consume a lot of energy which in turn limits the amount of time that a user can spend actually playing games on these devices. In this paper, …

Investment Timing For Mobile Payment Systems, Robert J. Kauffman, Jun Liu, Dan Ma Aug 2012

Investment Timing For Mobile Payment Systems, Robert J. Kauffman, Jun Liu, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The recent launch of Google Wallet has brought the issue of technology solutions in the mobile payment (m-payment) area to the forefront. In deciding whether and when to adopt m-payment technology, senior managers in banks are naturally concerned about uncertainties regarding future market conditions, technology standards, and consumer and merchant responses, especially their willingness to adopt. This study applies economic theory and modeling for decision-making under uncertainty to bank investments in mobile payment technology. We assess the projected benefits and costs of investment as a continuous-time stochastic process to determine optimal investment timing. We find that the value of waiting …

The Pricing Model Of Cloud Computing Services, Jianhui Huang, Dan Ma Aug 2012

The Pricing Model Of Cloud Computing Services, Jianhui Huang, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud computing service providers offer computing resource as a utility and software as a service over network. Many believe that Cloud computing is making an industry-wise paradigm shift for IT use. Besides its technique issues, the business feature of Cloud computing attracts our interests. Specifically the practice of Amazon EC2 introduces an interesting pricing scheme. Amazon provides users with virtual computing instances as a combination of interruptible service (i.e., spot instance) and uninterruptible service (i.e., on-demand and reserved instance). Spot instance is charged at a per use price which is dynamically changing over time; users of spot instance face the …

From Clickstreams To Searchstreams: Search Network Graph Evidence From A B2b E-Market, Mei Lin, M. F. Lin, Robert J. Kauffman Aug 2012

From Clickstreams To Searchstreams: Search Network Graph Evidence From A B2b E-Market, Mei Lin, M. F. Lin, Robert J. Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Consumers in e-commerce acquire information through search engines, yet to date there has been little empirical study on how users interact with the results produced by search engines. This is analogous to, but different from, the ever-expanding research on clickstreams, where users interact with static web pages. We propose a new network approach to analyzing search engine server log data. We call this searchstream data. We create graph representations based on the web pages that users traverse as they explore the search results that their use of search engines generates. We then analyze the graph-level properties of these search network …

Hedonic Valuation Of Online Game Participation, Robert J. Kauffman, Kwansoo Kim, Byungjoon Yoo Aug 2012

Hedonic Valuation Of Online Game Participation, Robert J. Kauffman, Kwansoo Kim, Byungjoon Yoo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We use hedonic valuation to establish a basis for valuing the time a user participates in an online gaming community. We distinguish between utilitarian and hedonic value. Our application involves elements of both utilitarian and hedonic value, however, the latter is much more important. We use an extensive data set involving a massive multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) from Korea. We specify and test econometric models that reflect the appropriate empirical structure for the setting, based on information about the players and the activities they engage in. The results permit us to estimate the hedonic value in monetary terms for …

Valuation Of Benchmark Provisions On It Services Contracts, Robert J. Kauffman, Ryan Sougstad Aug 2012

Valuation Of Benchmark Provisions On It Services Contracts, Robert J. Kauffman, Ryan Sougstad

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information technology (IT) services are often subject to downward price pressures due to improvements in technology and business processes in a competitive market. When clients enter into IT services contracts, they are faced with the future risk that their services will be overpriced relative to the broader IT services market. To mitigate this risk, clients often add benchmark provisions, whereby a neutral third party assesses the prevailing market price for services. It will support fair price adjustments if the market prices are lower than the current prices. We model the decision to benchmark in order to provide managerial information on …

Consumer Micro-Behavior And Tv Viewership Patterns: Data Analytics For The Two-Way Set-Top Box, Ray M. Chang, Robert J. Kauffman, Insoo Son

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Consumer behavior patterns related to home digital media use are changing due to technological innovations. We examine them in the presence of two-way cable television (CATV) settop boxes. They permit viewers to change channels, switch to the Internet, and order paid programming, among other functions. We focus on micro-level data that are generated from consumer CATV viewing behavior. We capture clickstreams of channel-changing behavior when consumer use a remote control handset to interact with the set-top box in their home. We explore a variety of data analytics results that characterize patterns of consumer channel-switching behavior, as a basis for suggesting …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cues from human visual system (HVS) can be used for further optimization of compression in modern hybrid video coding platforms. We present work that explores and exploits motion related attentional limitations. Algorithms for exploiting motion triggered attention were developed and compared with MPEG AVC/H.264 encoder with various settings for different bitrate levels. For the sequences with high motion activity our algorithm provides up to 8% bitrate savings.

Toward A Mobile Platform For Pervasive Games, Inseok Hwang, Youngki Lee, Taiwoo Park, Junehwa Song Aug 2012

Toward A Mobile Platform For Pervasive Games, Inseok Hwang, Youngki Lee, Taiwoo Park, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Emerging pervasive games will be immersed into real-life situations and leverage new types of contextual interactions therein. For instance, a player’s punching gesture, running activity, and fast heart rate conditions can be used as the game inputs. Although the contextual interaction is the core building blocks of pervasive games, individual game developers hardly utilize a rich set of interactions within a game play. Most challenging, it is significantly difficult for developers to expect dynamic availability of input devices in real life, and adapt to the situation without system-level support. Also, it is challenging to coordinate its resource use with other …

Boosting Multi-Kernel Locality-Sensitive Hashing For Scalable Image Retrieval, Hao Xia, Steven C. H. Hoi, Pengcheng Wu, Rong Jin Aug 2012

Boosting Multi-Kernel Locality-Sensitive Hashing For Scalable Image Retrieval, Hao Xia, Steven C. H. Hoi, Pengcheng Wu, Rong Jin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Similarity search is a key challenge for multimedia retrieval applications where data are usually represented in high-dimensional space. Among various algorithms proposed for similarity search in high-dimensional space, Locality-Sensitive Hashing (LSH) is the most popular one, which recently has been extended to Kernelized Locality-Sensitive Hashing (KLSH) by exploiting kernel similarity for better retrieval efficacy. Typically, KLSH works only with a single kernel, which is often limited in real-world multimedia applications, where data may originate from multiple resources or can be represented in several different forms. For example, in content-based multimedia retrieval, a variety of features can be extracted to represent …
