Attribute-Based Signing Right Delegation, Weiwei Liu, Yi Mu, Guomin Yang Oct 2014

Attribute-Based Signing Right Delegation, Weiwei Liu, Yi Mu, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute-based signature and proxy signature are both very useful in many real-world applications. In this paper, we combine the special features of both signatures and propose an attribute-based proxy signature scheme, where the original signer, who possesses a set of attributes, can delegate his/her signing right to a designated proxy signer. By verifying the signature, a verifier can be convinced that the signature is generated by the proxy signer who has obtained the delegation from a legitimate signer whose attributes satisfy a predicate. However, the verifier cannot tell from the signature who is the original signer. We provide the formal …

Strategic Sourcing In The Presence Of Uncertain Supply And Retail Competition, Jianqing Chen, Zhiling Guo Oct 2014

Strategic Sourcing In The Presence Of Uncertain Supply And Retail Competition, Jianqing Chen, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper develops an analytical model to evaluate competing retail firms’ sourcing strategies in the presence of supply uncertainty. We consider a common supplier that sells its uncertain supply to two downstream retail firms engaging in price competition in a horizontally differentiated product market. The focal firm has a dual-sourcing option, while the rival firm can only source from the common supplier. We assess the system-wide effects of supply uncertainty on the focal firm's incentive to pursue the dual-sourcing strategy. We find that the focal firm's dual-sourcing strategy can create a win-win situation that leads to increased retail prices and …

Entity Linking On Microblogs With Spatial And Temporal Signals, Yuan Fang, Ming-Wei Chang Oct 2014

Entity Linking On Microblogs With Spatial And Temporal Signals, Yuan Fang, Ming-Wei Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Microblogs present an excellent opportunity for monitoring and analyzing world happenings. Given that words are often ambiguous, entity linking becomes a crucial step towards understanding microblogs. In this paper, we re-examine the problem of entity linking on microblogs. We first observe that spatiotemporal (i.e., spatial and temporal) signals play a key role, but they are not utilized in existing approaches. Thus, we propose a novel entity linking framework that incorporates spatiotemporal signals through a weakly supervised process. Using entity annotations1 on real-world data, our experiments show that the spatiotemporal model improves F1 by more than 10 points over existing systems. …

Analyzing The Dangers Posed By Chrome Extensions, Lujo Bauer, Shaoying Cai, Limin Jia, Timothy Passaro, Yuan Tian Oct 2014

Analyzing The Dangers Posed By Chrome Extensions, Lujo Bauer, Shaoying Cai, Limin Jia, Timothy Passaro, Yuan Tian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A common characteristic of modern web browsers is that their functionality can be extended via third-party addons. In this paper we focus on Chrome extensions, to which the Chrome browser exports a rich API: extensions can potentially make network requests, access the local file system, get low-level information about running processes, etc. To guard against misuse, Chrome uses a permission system to curtail an extension's privileges. We demonstrate a series of attacks by which extensions can steal data, track user behavior, and collude to elevate their privileges. Although some attacks have previously been reported, we show that subtler versions can …

Designing An Immersive And Entertaining Pervasive Gameplay Experience With Spheros As Game And Interface Elements, Brennan Jones, Kody Dillman, Setareh Aghel Manesh, Ehud Sharlin, Anthony Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Sphero is a robotic remote-controlled ball capable of rolling around on its own in any direction at multiple speeds. Numerous games have been designed for the Sphero for smartphones and tablets. However, most of these games provide an interface for controlling the Sphero that is far from natural. These games also do not put a strong focus on the physical environment around the Sphero. This work discusses a control scheme used to control a Sphero with another Sphero, and a pervasive game leveraging this scheme that emphasizes physical properties of the environment to create an immersive experience.

Action Classification By Exploring Directional Co-Occurrence Of Weighted Stips, Mengyuan Liu, Hong Liu, Qianru Sun Oct 2014

Action Classification By Exploring Directional Co-Occurrence Of Weighted Stips, Mengyuan Liu, Hong Liu, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human action recognition is challenging mainly due to intro-variety, inter-ambiguity and clutter backgrounds in real videos. Bag-of-visual words model utilizes spatio-temporal interest points(STIPs), and represents action by the distribution of points which ignores visual context among points. To add more contextual information, we propose a method by encoding spatio-temporal distribution of weighted pairwise points. First, STIPs are extracted from an action sequence and clustered into visual words. Then, each word is weighted in both temporal and spatial domains to capture the relationships with other words. Finally, the directional relationships between co-occurrence pairwise words are used to encode visual contexts. We …

Lossy Trapdoor Relation And Its Applications To Lossy Encryption And Adaptive Trapdoor Relation, Haiyang Xue, Xianhui Lu, Bao Li, Yamin Liu Oct 2014

Lossy Trapdoor Relation And Its Applications To Lossy Encryption And Adaptive Trapdoor Relation, Haiyang Xue, Xianhui Lu, Bao Li, Yamin Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Peikert and Waters proposed the notion of lossy trapdoor function in STOC 2008. In this paper, we propose a relaxation of lossy trapdoor function, called lossy trapdoor relation. Unlike the lossy trapdoor function, lossy trapdoor relation does not require completely recovering the input but a public computable injective map of it. Interestingly, the lossy trapdoor relation maintains the application of lossy trapdoor function on the lossy encryption. Moreover, motivated by the construction of adaptive trapdoor relation proposed by Wee (Crypto 2010), we introduce all-but-one verifiable lossy trapdoor relation which is in fact a relaxation of all-but-one lossy trapdoor function. – …

A Multi-Dimensional Image Quality Prediction Model For User-Generated Images In Social Networks, You Yang, Xu Wang, Tao Guan, Jialie Shen, Li Yu Oct 2014

A Multi-Dimensional Image Quality Prediction Model For User-Generated Images In Social Networks, You Yang, Xu Wang, Tao Guan, Jialie Shen, Li Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User-generated images (UGIs) are currently proliferating within social networks. These images contain multi-dimensional data, including the image itself, text and the social links of the owner. UGIs can be utilized for self-presentation, news dissemination and other purposes, and the quality of the image should be able to reveal these social functionalities. However, it is challenging to predict UGI quality utilizing existing models, such as image quality assessment, recommender systems or others, because these models have difficulties processing multi-dimensional data simultaneously. To address this problem, we propose a multi-dimensional image quality prediction model for UGIs in social networks. In this model, …

Auction With Rolling Horizon For Urban Consolidation Centre, Chen Wang, Stephanus Daniel Handoko, Hoong Chuin Lau Oct 2014

Auction With Rolling Horizon For Urban Consolidation Centre, Chen Wang, Stephanus Daniel Handoko, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A number of cities around the world have adopted urban consolidation centres (UCCs) to address some challenges of their last-mile deliveries. At the UCC, goods are consolidated based on their destinations prior to their deliveries into the city centre. In many examples, the UCC owns a fleet of eco-friendly vehicles to carry out the deliveries. A carrier/shipper who buys the UCC’s service hence no longer needs to enter the city centre in which time-window and vehicle-type restrictions may apply. As a result, it becomes possible to retain the use of large trucks for the economies of scale outside the city …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

It was 2.35 am on a Saturday morning. Wiki Lim, process specialist from the Process Innovation Centre (PIC) of Hippi Care Hospital (HCH), desperately doodling on her notepad for ideas to improve service delivery at HCH’s Emergency Department (ED). HCH has committed to the public that its ED would meet the service quality criterion of serving 90% of A3 and A4 patients, non-emergency patients with moderate to mild symptoms, within 90 minutes of their arrival at the ED. The ED was not able to meet this performance goal and Dr. Edward Kim, the head of the ED at HCH, had …

Multi-Agent Orienteering Problem With Time-Dependent Capacity Constraints, Cen Chen, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau Oct 2014

Multi-Agent Orienteering Problem With Time-Dependent Capacity Constraints, Cen Chen, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we formulate and study the Multi-agent Orienteering Problem with Time-dependent Capacity Constraints (MOPTCC). MOPTCC is similar to the classical orienteering problem at single-agent level: given a limited time budget, an agent travels around the network and collects rewards by visiting different nodes, with the objective of maximizing the sum of his collected rewards. The most important feature we introduce in MOPTCC is the inclusion of multiple competing agents. All agents in MOPTCC are assumed to be self-interested, and they interact with each other when arrive at certain nodes simultaneously. As all nodes are capacitated, if a particular …

Compositional Vector Space Models For Improved Bug Localization, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Julia Lawall Oct 2014

Compositional Vector Space Models For Improved Bug Localization, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Julia Lawall

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software developers and maintainers often need to locate code units responsible for a particular bug. A number of Information Retrieval (IR) techniques have been proposed to map natural language bug descriptions to the associated code units. The vector space model (VSM) with the standard tf-idf weighting scheme (VSMnatural), has been shown to outperform nine other state-of-the-art IR techniques. However, there are multiple VSM variants with different weighting schemes, and their relative performance differs for different software systems. Based on this observation, we propose to compose various VSM variants, modelling their composition as an optimization problem. We propose a genetic algorithm …

Dynamic Inference Of Change Contracts, Tien-Duy B. Le, Jooyong Yi, David Lo, Ferdian Thung, Abhik Roychoudhury Oct 2014

Dynamic Inference Of Change Contracts, Tien-Duy B. Le, Jooyong Yi, David Lo, Ferdian Thung, Abhik Roychoudhury

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software evolves and thus developers frequently make changes to systems that are logged in version control systems. These changes are often poorly documented -- often commit logs are empty or only contain minimal information. Thus, it is often a challenge to understand why certain changes are made especially if they were introduced many months or even years ago. Understanding these changes is important when pertinent questions are raised during future bug fixing or software evolution efforts. Thus, there is a need for an automated approach that can help developers better document changes with little or minimal effort. To address this …

Competition Between Software-As-A-Service Vendors, Dan Ma, Robert John Kauffman Oct 2014

Competition Between Software-As-A-Service Vendors, Dan Ma, Robert John Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a model of software-as-a-service (SaaS) in a competitive marketplace that brings clarity to the choices that competing vendors must make for pricing and quality strategy. We focus on several features of SaaS competition, including differences in vendor offerings, incomplete information on application functionality, the potential lock-in risk of SaaS clients, and their cost of learning about what it will take to make the vendors’ software work well. Clients can sample the fit costs of adoption, but can switch to another vendor. We obtained several findings through the use of a game-theoretic model. First, a client’s switching cost is …

Time-Series Data Mining In Transportation: A Case Study On Singapore Public Train Commuter Travel Patterns, Roy Ka Wei Lee, Tin Seong Kam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The adoption of smart cards technologies and automated data collection systems (ADCS) in transportation domain had provided public transport planners opportunities to amass a huge and continuously increasing amount of time-series data about the behaviors and travel patterns of commuters. However the explosive growth of temporal related databases has far outpaced the transport planners’ ability to interpret these data using conventional statistical techniques, creating an urgent need for new techniques to support the analyst in transforming the data into actionable information and knowledge. This research study thus explores and discusses the potential use of time-series data mining, a relatively new …

We Can Hear You With Wifi!, Guanhua Wang, Yongpan Zou, Zimu Zhou, Kaishun Wu, Lionel M. Ni

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent literature advances Wi-Fi signals to “see” people’s motions and locations. This paper asks the following question: Can Wi-Fi “hear” our talks? We present WiHear, which enables Wi-Fi signals to “hear” our talks without deploying any devices. To achieve this, WiHear needs to detect and analyze fine-grained radio reflections from mouth movements. WiHear solves this micro-movement detection problem by introducing Mouth Motion Profile that leverages partial multipath effects and wavelet packet transformation. Since Wi-Fi signals do not require line-of-sight, WiHear can “hear” people talks within the radio range. Further, WiHear can simultaneously “hear” multiple people’s talks leveraging MIMO technology. We …

Build Emotion Lexicon From Microblogs By Combining Effects Of Seed Words And Emoticons In A Heterogeneous Graph, Kaisong Song, Shi Feng, Wei Gao, Daling Wang, Ling Chen, Chengqi Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As an indispensable resource for emotion analysis, emotion lexicons have attracted increasing attention in recent years. Most existing methods focus on capturing the single emotional effect of words rather than the emotion distributions which are helpful to model multiple complex emotions in a subjective text. Meanwhile, automatic lexicon building methods are overly dependent on seed words but neglect the effect of emoticons which are natural graphical labels of fine-grained emotion. In this paper, we propose a novel emotion lexicon building framework that leverages both seed words and emoticons simultaneously to capture emotion distributions of candidate words more accurately. Our method …

Saliency Detection With Flash And No-Flash Image Pairs, Shengfeng He, Rynson W.H. Lau Sep 2014

Saliency Detection With Flash And No-Flash Image Pairs, Shengfeng He, Rynson W.H. Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a new saliency detection method using a pair of flash and no-flash images. Our approach is inspired by two observations. First, only the foreground objects are significantly brightened by the flash as they are relatively nearer to the camera than the background. Second, the brightness variations introduced by the flash provide hints to surface orientation changes. Accordingly, the first observation is explored to form the background prior to eliminate background distraction. The second observation provides a new orientation cue to compute surface orientation contrast. These photometric cues from the two observations are independent of visual …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Associating faces appearing in Web videos with names presented in the surrounding context is an important task in many applications. However, the problem is not well investigated particularly under large-scale realistic scenario, mainly due to the scarcity of dataset constructed in such circumstance. In this paper, we introduce a Web video dataset of celebrities, named WebV-Cele, for name-face association. The dataset consists of 75 073 Internet videos of over 4 000 hours, covering 2 427 celebrities and 649 001 faces. This is, to our knowledge, the most comprehensive dataset for this problem. We describe the details of dataset construction, discuss …

Crossroad is among the most dangerous parts outside for the visually impaired people. Numerous studies have exploited navigating systems for the visually impaired community, providing services ranging from block detection, route planning to realtime localization. However, none of them have addressed the safety issue in crossroad and integrated three key factors necessary for a practical crossroad navigation system: detecting the crossroad, locating zebra patterns, and guiding the user within zebra crossing when passing the road. Our CrossNavi application responds to these needs, providing an integrated crossroad navigation service that incorporates all the essential functionalities mentioned above. The overall service is …

Towards Rigorously Faking Bidirectional Model Transformations, Christopher M. Poskitt, Mike Dodds, Richard F. Paige, Arend Rensink Sep 2014

Towards Rigorously Faking Bidirectional Model Transformations, Christopher M. Poskitt, Mike Dodds, Richard F. Paige, Arend Rensink

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bidirectional model transformations (bx) are mechanisms for automatically restoring consistency between multiple concurrently modified models. They are, however, challenging to implement; many model transformation languages not supporting them at all. In this paper, we propose an approach for automatically obtaining the consistency guarantees of bx without the complexities of a bx language. First, we show how to "fake" true bidirectionality using pairs of unidirectional transformations and inter-model consistency constraints in Epsilon. Then, we propose to automatically verify that these transformations are consistency preserving – thus indistinguishable from true bx – by defining translations to graph rewrite rules and nested conditions, …

Automatic Early Defects Detection In Use Case Documents, Shuang Liu, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Yue Zhang, Bimlesh Wadhwa, Jin Song Dong, Xinyu Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Use cases, as the primary techniques in the user requirement analysis, have been widely adopted in the requirement engineering practice. As developed early, use cases also serve as the basis for function requirement development, system design and testing. Errors in the use cases could potentially lead to problems in the system design or implementation. It is thus highly desirable to detect errors in use cases. Automatically analyzing use case documents is challenging primarily because they are written in natural languages. In this work, we aim to achieve automatic defect detection in use case documents by leveraging on advanced parsing techniques. …

Efficient Data Compression With Error Bound Guarantee In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Abu Alsheikh, P. K. Poh, S. Lin, Hwee-Pink Tan, D. Niyato Sep 2014

Efficient Data Compression With Error Bound Guarantee In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Abu Alsheikh, P. K. Poh, S. Lin, Hwee-Pink Tan, D. Niyato

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a data compression and dimensionality reduction scheme for data fusion and aggregation applications to prevent data congestion and reduce energy consumption at network connecting points such as cluster heads and gateways. Our in-network approach can be easily tuned to analyze the data temporal or spatial correlation using an unsupervised neural network scheme, namely the autoencoders. In particular, our algorithm extracts intrinsic data features from previously collected historical samples to transform the raw data into a low dimensional representation. Moreover, the proposed framework provides an error bound guarantee mechanism. We evaluate the proposed solution using real-world data sets and …

Online Probabilistic Learning For Fuzzy Inference System, Richard Jayadi Oentaryo, Meng Joo Er, San Linn, Xiang Li Sep 2014

Online Probabilistic Learning For Fuzzy Inference System, Richard Jayadi Oentaryo, Meng Joo Er, San Linn, Xiang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online learning is a key methodology for expert systems to gracefully cope with dynamic environments. In the context of neuro-fuzzy systems, research efforts have been directed toward developing online learning methods that can update both system structure and parameters on the fly. However, the current online learning approaches often rely on heuristic methods that lack a formal statistical basis and exhibit limited scalability in the face of large data stream. In light of these issues, we develop a new Sequential Probabilistic Learning for Adaptive Fuzzy Inference System (SPLAFIS) that synergizes the Bayesian Adaptive Resonance Theory (BART) and Rule-Wise Decoupled Extended …

Privatedroid: Private Browsing Mode For Android, Su Mon Kywe, Christopher Landis, Yutong Pei, Justin Satterfield, Yuan Tian, Patrick Tague

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Private browsing mode is a privacy feature adopted by many modern computer browsers. With the increased use of mobile devices and escalating privacy concerns for mobile users, browser applications on mobile devices have also started incorporating private browsing mode. Even so, the use of private browsing mode is limited to the browser applications and cannot be applied directly on other third-party mobile applications. In this paper, we propose PrivateDroid, which provides a private browsing mode for third-party applications on the Android platform. First, we discuss three possible approaches of implementing mobile private browsing mode: code instrumentation, an extra sandbox, and …

Efficient Hidden Vector Encryption With Constant-Size Ciphertext, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo Sep 2014

Efficient Hidden Vector Encryption With Constant-Size Ciphertext, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A Hidden Vector Encryption (HVE) scheme is a special type of anonymous identity-based encryption (IBE) scheme where the attribute string associated with the ciphertext or the user secret key can contain wildcards. In this paper, we introduce two constant-size ciphertext-policy hidden vector encryption (CP-HVE) schemes. Our first scheme is constructed on composite order bilinear groups, while the second one is built on prime order bilinear groups. Both schemes are proven secure in a selective security model which captures plaintext (or payload) and attribute hiding. To the best of our knowledge, our schemes are the first HVE constructions that can achieve …

Linking Lightweight And Heavyweight Systems Analysis By Converting Service Responsibility Tables Into Uml Diagrams, X. Tan, S. Alter, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Heavyweight systems analysis approaches such as the use of Unified Modeling Language (UML) are inappropriate for business professionals who nonetheless need to participate actively in systems analysis and design processes to ensure that the system requirements reflect their needs. This paper proposes the use of a lightweight analysis approach based on Service Responsibility Tables (SRTs) to serve as a front-end to UML diagrams. Business professionals (with or without the help of IT professionals) can use this lightweight approach to specify at least part of system requirements. Subsequently, IT professionals can perform heavyweight analysis for the design and implementation of hardware …

Exploring Variety Seeking Behavior In Mobile Users, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Robert J. Kauffman, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Understanding the personality traits and current attitudes of individual consumers is crucial for retailers and mobile advertisers. In this paper, we investigate the phenomenon of “variety seeking tendencies" in mobile users in their (1) online (represented by their App usage behavior), and (2) physical (represented by their location visits) worlds. We show that different categories of users exhibit different levels of variety. Further, by analyzing at various time scales, we show that there exists correlation between when a person is likely to visit new places in the real world and when he/she is likely to explore new Apps in the …
