Orienteering Problem: A Survey Of Recent Variants, Solution Approaches And Applications, Aldy Gunawan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Pieter Vansteenwegen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Orienteering Problem (OP) has received a lot of attention in the past few decades. The OP is a routing problem in which the goal is to determine a subset of nodes to visit, and in which order, so that the total collected score is maximized and a given time budget is not exceeded. A number of typical variants has been studied, such as the Team OP, the (Team) OP with Time Windows and the Time Dependent OP. Recently, a number of new variants of the OP was introduced, such as the Stochastic OP, the Generalized OP, the Arc OP, …

Processing Incomplete K Nearest Neighbor Search, Xiaoye Miao, Yunjun Gao, Gang Chen, Baihua Zheng, Huiyong Cui

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a setS of multidimensional objects and a query object q, a k nearest neighbor (kNN) query finds from S the k closest objects to q. This query is a fundamental problem in database, data mining, and information retrieval research. It plays an important role in a wide spectrum of real applications such as image recognition and location-based services. However, due to the failure of data transmission devices, improper storage, and accidental loss, incomplete data exist widely in those applications, where some dimensional values of data items are missing. In this paper, we systematically study incomplete k nearest neighbor (IkNN) …

Managing Egress Of Crowd During Infrastructure Disruption, Teck Hou Teng, Shih-Fen Cheng, Trong-Nghia Truong, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a large indoor environment such as a sports arena or convention center, smooth egress of crowd after an event can be seriously affected if infrastructure such as elevators and escalators break down. In this paper, we propose a novel crowd simulator known as SIM-DISRUPT for simulating egress scenarios in non-emergency situations. To surface the impact of disrupted infrastructure on the egress of crowd, SIM-DISRUPT includes features that allow users to specify selective disruptions as well as strategies for controlling the distribution and egress choices of crowd. Using SIM-DISRUPT, we investigate effects of crowd distribution, egress choices and infrastructure disruptions …

An Agent-Based Approach To Human Migration Movement, Larry Lin, Kathleen M. Carley, Shih-Fen Cheng Dec 2016

An Agent-Based Approach To Human Migration Movement, Larry Lin, Kathleen M. Carley, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

How are the populations of the world likely to shift? Which countries will be impacted by sea-level rise? This paper uses a country-level agent-based dynamic network model to examine shifts in population given network relations among countries, which influences overall population change. Some of the networks considered include: alliance networks, shared language networks, economic influence networks, and proximity networks. Validation of model is done for migration probabilities between countries, as well as for country populations and distributions. The proposed framework provides a way to explore the interaction between climate change and policy factors at a global scale.

Traffic Simulation Model For Port Planning And Congestion Prevention, Baoxiang Li, Kar Way Tan, Trong Khiem Tran Dec 2016

Traffic Simulation Model For Port Planning And Congestion Prevention, Baoxiang Li, Kar Way Tan, Trong Khiem Tran

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effective management of land-side transportation provides the competitive advantage to port terminal operators in improving services and efficient use of limited space in an urban port. We present a hybrid simulation model that combines traffic-flow modeling and discrete-event simulation for land-side port planning and evaluation of traffic conditions for a number of what-if scenarios. We design our model based on a real-world case of a bulk cargo port. The problem is interesting due to complexity of heterogeneous closed-looped internal vehicles and external vehicles traveling in spaces with very limited traffic regulation (no traffic lights, no traffic wardens) and the traffic …

Towards Concolic Testing For Hybrid Systems, Pingfan Kong, Yi Li, Xiaohong Chen, Jun Sun, Meng Sun, Jingyi Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hybrid systems exhibit both continuous and discrete behavior. Analyzing hybrid systems is known to be hard. Inspired by the idea of concolic testing (of programs), we investigate whether we can combine random sampling and symbolic execution in order to effectively verify hybrid systems. We identify a sufficient condition under which such a combination is more effective than random sampling. Furthermore, we analyze different strategies of combining random sampling and symbolic execution and propose an algorithm which allows us to dynamically switch between them so as to reduce the overall cost. Our method has been implemented as a web-based checker named …

Towards Learning And Verifying Invariants Of Cyber-Physical Systems By Code Mutation, Yuqi Chen, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun Nov 2016

Towards Learning And Verifying Invariants Of Cyber-Physical Systems By Code Mutation, Yuqi Chen, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cyber-physical systems (CPS), which integrate algorithmic control with physical processes, often consist of physically distributed components communicating over a network. A malfunctioning or compromised component in such a CPS can lead to costly consequences, especially in the context of public infrastructure. In this short paper, we argue for the importance of constructing invariants (or models) of the physical behaviour exhibited by CPS, motivated by their applications to the control, monitoring, and attestation of components. To achieve this despite the inherent complexity of CPS, we propose a new technique for learning invariants that combines machine learning with ideas from mutation testing. …

Automated Verification Of Timed Security Protocols With Clock Drift, Li Li, Jun Sun Nov 2016

Automated Verification Of Timed Security Protocols With Clock Drift, Li Li, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Time is frequently used in security protocols to provide better security. For instance, critical credentials often have limited lifetime which improves the security against brute-force attacks. However, it is challenging to correctly use time in protocol design, due to the existence of clock drift in practice. In this work, we develop a systematic method to formally specify as well as automatically verify timed security protocols with clock drift. We first extend the previously proposed timed applied ππ -calculus as a formal specification language for timed protocols with clock drift. Then, we define its formal semantics based on timed logic rules, …

Rapid Deployment Indoor Localization Without Prior Human Participation, Han Xu, Zimu Zhou, Longfei Shangguan Nov 2016

Rapid Deployment Indoor Localization Without Prior Human Participation, Han Xu, Zimu Zhou, Longfei Shangguan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we propose RAD, a RApid Deployment localization framework without human sampling. The basic idea of RAD is to automatically generate a fingerprint database through space partition, of which each cell is fingerprinted by its maximum influence APs. Based on this robust location indicator, fine-grained localization can be achieved by a discretized particle filter utilizing sensor data fusion. We devise techniques for CIVD-based field division, graph-based particle filter, EM-based individual character learning, and build a prototype that runs on commodity devices. Extensive experiments show that RAD provides a comparable performance to the state-of-the-art RSSbased methods while relieving it …

Towards Using Concurrent Java Api Correctly, Shuang Liu, Guangdong Bai, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Nov 2016

Towards Using Concurrent Java Api Correctly, Shuang Liu, Guangdong Bai, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Concurrent Programs are hard to analyze or debug due to the complex program logic and unpredictable execution environment. In practice, ordinary programmers often adopt existing well-designed concurrency related API (e.g., those in java.util.concurrent) so as to avoid dealing with these issues. These API can however often be used incorrectly, which results in hardto-debug concurrent bugs. In this work, we propose an approach for enforcing the correct usage of concurrency-related Java API. Our idea is to annotate concurrency-related Java classes with annotations related to misuse of these API and develop lightweight type checker to detect concurrent API misuse based on the …

Improving Quality Of Use Case Documents Through Learning And User Interaction, Shuang Liu, Jun Sun, Hao Xiao, Bimlesh Wadhwa, Jin Song Dong, Xinyu Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Use cases are widely used to capture user requirements based on interactions between different roles in the system. They are mostly documented in natural language and sometimes aided with graphical illustrations in the form of use case diagrams. Use cases serve as an important means to communicate among stakeholders, requirement engineers and system engineers as they are easy to understand and are produced early in the software development process. Having high quality use cases are beneficial in many ways, e.g., in avoiding inconsistency/incompleteness in requirements, in guiding system design, in generating test cases. In this work, we propose an approach …

Data Exfiltration Detection And Prevention: Virtually Distributed Pomdps For Practically Safer Networks, Sara Marie Mc Carthy, Arunesh Sinha, Milind Tambe, Pratyusa Manadhata Nov 2016

Data Exfiltration Detection And Prevention: Virtually Distributed Pomdps For Practically Safer Networks, Sara Marie Mc Carthy, Arunesh Sinha, Milind Tambe, Pratyusa Manadhata

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the challenge of detecting and addressing advanced persistent threats (APTs) in a computer network, focusing in particular on the challenge of detecting data exfiltration over Domain Name System (DNS) queries, where existing detection sensors are imperfect and lead to noisy observations about the network’s security state. Data exfiltration over DNS queries involves unauthorized transfer of sensitive data from an organization to a remote adversary through a DNS data tunnel to a malicious web domain. Given the noisy sensors, previous work has illustrated that standard approaches fail to satisfactorily rise to the challenge of detecting exfiltration attempts. Instead, we …

Aspect-Based Helpfulness Prediction For Online Product Reviews, Yinfei Yang, Cen Chen, Forrest Sheng Bao Nov 2016

Aspect-Based Helpfulness Prediction For Online Product Reviews, Yinfei Yang, Cen Chen, Forrest Sheng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Product reviews greatly influence purchase decisions in online shopping. A common burden of online shopping is that consumers have to search for the right answers through massive reviews, especially on popular products. Hence, estimating and predicting the helpfulness of reviews become important tasks to directly improve shopping experience. In this paper, we propose a new approach to helpfulness prediction by leveraging aspect analysis of reviews. Our hypothesis is that a helpful review will cover many aspects of a product at different emphasis levels. The first step to tackle this problem is to extract proper aspects. Because related products share common …

Reducing Adaptation Latency For Multi-Concept Visual Perception In Outdoor Environments, Maggie Wigness, John G. Rogers, Luis Ernesto Navarro-Serment, Arne Suppe, Bruce A. Draper Nov 2016

Reducing Adaptation Latency For Multi-Concept Visual Perception In Outdoor Environments, Maggie Wigness, John G. Rogers, Luis Ernesto Navarro-Serment, Arne Suppe, Bruce A. Draper

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-concept visual classification is emerging as a common environment perception technique, with applications in autonomous mobile robot navigation. Supervised visual classifiers are typically trained with large sets of images, hand annotated by humans with region boundary outlines followed by label assignment. This annotation is time consuming, and unfortunately, a change in environment requires new or additional labeling to adapt visual perception. The time is takes for a human to label new data is what we call adaptation latency. High adaptation latency is not simply undesirable but may be infeasible for scenarios with limited labeling time and resources. In this paper, …

Multimedia events such as “birthday party” usually involve the complex interaction between humans and objects. Unlike actions and sports, these events rarely contain unique motion patterns to be vividly explored for recognition. To encode rich objects in the events, a common practice is to tag an individual video frame with object labels, represented as a vector signifying probabilities of object appearances. These vectors are then pooled across frames to obtain a video-level representation. The current practices suffer from two deficiencies due to the direct employment of deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) and standard feature pooling techniques. First, the use of …

A Survey On Wireless Indoor Localization From The Device Perspective, Jiang Xiao, Zimu Zhou, Youwen Yi, Lionel M. Ni Nov 2016

A Survey On Wireless Indoor Localization From The Device Perspective, Jiang Xiao, Zimu Zhou, Youwen Yi, Lionel M. Ni

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the marvelous development of wireless techniques and ubiquitous deployment of wireless systems indoors, myriad indoor location-based services (ILBSs) have permeated into numerous aspects of modern life. The most fundamental functionality is to pinpoint the location of the target via wireless devices. According to how wireless devices interact with the target, wireless indoor localization schemes roughly fall into two categories: device based and device free. In device-based localization, a wireless device (e.g., a smartphone) is attached to the target and computes its location through cooperation with other deployed wireless devices. In device-free localization, the target carries no wireless devices, while …

Service Adaptation With Probabilistic Partial Models, Manman Chen, Tian Huat Tan, Jun Sun, Jingyi Wang, Yang Liu, Jing Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Web service composition makes use of existing Web services to build complex business processes. Non-functional requirements are crucial for the Web service composition. In order to satisfy non-functional requirements when composing a Web service, one needs to rely on the estimated quality of the component services. However, estimation is seldom accurate especially in the dynamic environment. Hence, we propose a framework, ADFlow, to monitor and adapt the workflow of the Web service composition when necessary to maximize its ability to satisfy the non-functional requirements automatically. To reduce the monitoring overhead, ADFlow relies on asynchronous monitoring. ADFlow has been implemented and …

Scaling Bdd-Based Timed Verification With Simulation Reduction, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Tian Huat Tan, Jun Sun, Jiaying Li, Yang Liu, Manman Chen, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Digitization is a technique that has been widely used in real-time model checking. With the assumption of digital clocks, symbolic model checking techniques (like those based on BDDs) can be applied for real-time systems. The problem of model checking real-time systems based on digitization is that the number of tick transitions increases rapidly with the increment of clock upper bounds. In this paper, we propose to improve BDD-based verification for real-time systems using simulation reduction. We show that simulation reduction allows us to verify timed automata with large clock upper bounds and to converge faster to the fixpoint. The presented …

Designing Minimal Effective Normative Systems With The Help Of Lightweight Formal Methods, Jianye Hao, Eunsuk Kang, Jun Sun, Daniel Jackson Nov 2016

Designing Minimal Effective Normative Systems With The Help Of Lightweight Formal Methods, Jianye Hao, Eunsuk Kang, Jun Sun, Daniel Jackson

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Normative systems are an important approach to achieving effective coordination among (often an arbitrary number of) agents in multiagent systems. A normative system should be effective in ensuring the satisfaction of a desirable system property, and minimal (i.e., not containing norms that unnecessarily over-constrain the behaviors of agents). Designing or even automatically synthesizing minimal effective normative systems is highly non-trivial. Previous attempts on synthesizing such systems through simulations often fail to generate normative systems which are both minimal and effective. In this work, we propose a framework that facilitates designing of minimal effective normative systems using lightweight formal methods. Given …

M(2)-Abks: Attribute-Based Multi-Keyword Search Over Encrypted Personal Health Records In Multi-Owner Setting, Yinbin Miao, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Fushan Wei, Zhiquan Liu, Xu An Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online personal health record (PHR) is more inclined to shift data storage and search operations to cloud server so as to enjoy the elastic resources and lessen computational burden in cloud storage. As multiple patients' data is always stored in the cloud server simultaneously, it is a challenge to guarantee the confidentiality of PHR data and allow data users to search encrypted data in an efficient and privacy-preserving way. To this end, we design a secure cryptographic primitive called as attribute-based multi-keyword search over encrypted personal health records in multi-owner setting to support both fine-grained access control and multi-keyword search …

A Provably Secure Aggregate Signature Scheme For Healthcare Wireless Sensor Networks, Limin Shen, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Meixia Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are being used in a wide range of applications for healthcare monitoring, like heart rate monitors and blood pressure monitors, which can minimize the need for healthcare professionals. In medical system, sensors on or in patients produce medical data which can be easily compromised by a vast of attacks. Although signature schemes can protect data authenticity and data integrity, when the number of users involved in the medical system becomes huge, the bandwidth and storage cost will rise sharply so that existing signature schemes are inapplicability for WSNs. In this paper, we propose an efficient aggregate …

Landmark Reranking For Smart Travel Guide Systems By Combining And Analyzing Diverse Media, Junge Shen, Jialie Shen, Tao Mei, Xinbo Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Advanced networking technologies and massive online social media have stimulated a booming growth of travel heterogeneous information in recent years. By employing such information, smart travel guide systems, such as landmark ranking systems, have been proposed to offer diverse online travel services. It is essential for a landmark ranking system to structure, analyze, and search the travel heterogeneous information to produce human-expected results. Therefore, currently the most fundamental yet challenging problems can be concluded: 1) how to fuse heterogeneous tourism information and 2) how to model landmark ranking. In this paper, a novel landmark search system is introduced based on …

Finding Causality And Responsibility For Probabilistic Reverse Skyline Query Non-Answers, Yunjun Gao, Qing Liu, Gang Cheng, Linlin Zhou, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Causality and responsibility is an essential tool in the database community for providing intuitive explanations for answers/non-answers to queries. Causality denotes the causes for the answers/non-answers to queries, and responsibility represents the degree of a cause which reflects its influence on the answers/non-answers to queries. In this paper, we study the causality and responsibility problem (CRP) for the non-answers to probabilistic reverse skyline queries (PRSQ). We first formalize CRP on PRSQ, and then, we propose an efficient algorithm termed as CP to compute the causality and responsibility for the non-answers to PRSQ. CP first finds candidate causes, and then, it …

A Study On A Feasible No-Root Approach On Android, Yao Cheng, Yingjiu Li, Deng, Robert H., Lingyun Ying, Wei He Nov 2016

A Study On A Feasible No-Root Approach On Android, Yao Cheng, Yingjiu Li, Deng, Robert H., Lingyun Ying, Wei He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Root is the administrative privilege on Android, which is however inaccessible on stock Android devices. Due to the desire for privileged functionalities and the reluctance of rooting their devices, Android users seek for no-root approaches, which provide users with part of root privileges without rooting their devices. Existing no-root approaches require users to launch a separate service via Android Debug Bridge (ADB) on an Android device, which would perform user-desired tasks. However, it is unusual for a third-party Android application to work with a separate native service via sockets, and it requires the application developers to have extra knowledge such …

An Efficient And Expressive Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based-Encryption Scheme With Partially Hidden Access Structures, Hui Cui, Deng, Robert H., Guowei Wu, Junzuo Lai Nov 2016

An Efficient And Expressive Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based-Encryption Scheme With Partially Hidden Access Structures, Hui Cui, Deng, Robert H., Guowei Wu, Junzuo Lai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A promising solution to protect data privacy in cloud storage services is known as ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE). However, in a traditional CP-ABE scheme, a ciphertext is bound with an explicit access structure, which may leak private information about the underlying plaintext in that anyone having access to the ciphertexts can tell the attributes of the privileged recipients by looking at the access structures. A notion called CP-ABE with partially hidden access structures [14, 15, 18, 19, 24] was put forth to address this problem, in which each attribute consists of an attribute name and an attribute value and the …

Efficient Tag Path Authentication Protocol With Less Tag Memory, Hongbing Wang, Yingjiu Li, Zongyang Zhang, Yunlei Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Logistical management has been advanced rapidly in these years, taking advantage of the broad connectivity of the Internet. As it becomes an important part of our lives, it also raises many challenging issues, e.g., the counterfeits of expensive goods pose a serious threat to supply chain management. As a result, path authentication becomes especially important in supply chain management, since it helps us maintain object pedigree and supply chain integrity. Meanwhile, tag path authentication must meet a series of security requirements, such as authentication, privacy, and unlinkability. In addition, the authentication protocol must be efficient. In 2011, the first tag path …

A Novel Covert Channel Detection Method In Cloud Based On Xsrm And Improved Event Association Algorithm, Lina Wang, Weijie Liu, Neeraj Kumar, Debiao He, Cheng Tan, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Covert channel is a major threat to the information system security and commonly found in operating systems, especially in cloud computing environment. Owing to the characteristics in cloud computing environment such as resources sharing and logic boundaries, covert channels become more varied and difficult to find. Focusing on those problems, this paper presents a universal method for detecting covert channel automatically. To achieve a global detection, we leveraged a virtual machine event record mechanism in hypervisor to gather necessary metadata. Combining the shared resources matrix methodology with events association mechanism, we proposed a distinctive algorithm that can accurately locate and …

Learning Sentence Embeddings With Auxiliary Tasks For Cross-Domain Sentiment Classification, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang Nov 2016

Learning Sentence Embeddings With Auxiliary Tasks For Cross-Domain Sentiment Classification, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study cross-domain sentiment classification with neural network architectures. We borrow the idea from Structural Correspondence Learning and use two auxiliary tasks to help induce a sentence embedding that supposedly works well across domains for sentiment classification. We also propose to jointly learn this sentence embedding together with the sentiment classifier itself. Experiment results demonstrate that our proposed joint model outperforms several state-of-the-art methods on five benchmark datasets.
