Social Troubleshooting Workshops: Upskilling Students' Soft And Self-Reflection Skills, Sandra Schulz, Rita Garcia, Christoph Treude
Social Troubleshooting Workshops: Upskilling Students' Soft And Self-Reflection Skills, Sandra Schulz, Rita Garcia, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This poster focuses on workshops to support students’ soft and selfreflection skills during collaborative learning. These workshops intend to help reduce anxiety during group work and to promote inclusive and equitable collaborative learning environments. Unfortunately, single-paced instructional approaches are typically applied in learning environments [3] and do not consider students’ needs when learning nor provide soft-skills guidance that encourages equal participation. The workshops offer educator and student support for equitable group work through upskilling students’ soft skills, such as leadership and communication, that promote better teamwork. By assisting students in developing and practising soft and self-reflection skills, they might have …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose to perform video question answering (VideoQA) in a Contrastive manner via a Video Graph Transformer model (CoVGT). CoVGT’s uniqueness and superiority are three-fold: 1) It proposes a dynamic graph transformer module which encodes video by explicitly capturing the visual objects, their relations and dynamics, for complex spatio-temporal reasoning. 2) It designs separate video and text transformers for contrastive learning between the video and text to perform QA, instead of multi-modal transformer for answer classification. Fine-grained video-text communication is done by additional cross-modal interaction modules. 3) It is optimized by the joint fully- and self-supervised contrastive objectives between the …

Mdps As Distribution Transformers: Affine Invariant Synthesis For Safety Objectives, S. Akshay, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Tobias Meggendorfer, Dorde Zikelic
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Markov decision processes can be viewed as transformers of probability distributions. While this view is useful from a practical standpoint to reason about trajectories of distributions, basic reachability and safety problems are known to be computationally intractable (i.e., Skolem-hard) to solve in such models. Further, we show that even for simple examples of MDPs, strategies for safety objectives over distributions can require infinite memory and randomization. In light of this, we present a novel overapproximation approach to synthesize strategies in an MDP, such that a safety objective over the distributions is met. More precisely, we develop a new framework for template-based …

Knowledge-Enhanced Mixed-Initiative Dialogue System For Emotional Support Conversations, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Yifei Yuan, Wai Lam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Unlike empathetic dialogues, the system in emotional support conversations (ESC) is expected to not only convey empathy for comforting the help-seeker, but also proactively assist in exploring and addressing their problems during the conversation. In this work, we study the problem of mixed-initiative ESC where the user and system can both take the initiative in leading the conversation. Specifically, we conduct a novel analysis on mixed-initiative ESC systems with a tailor-designed schema that divides utterances into different types with speaker roles and initiative types. Four emotional support metrics are proposed to evaluate the mixed-initiative interactions. The analysis reveals the necessity …

Towards Robust Personalized Dialogue Generation Via Order-Insensitive Representation Regularization, Liang Chen, Hongru Wang, Yang Deng, Wai-Chung Kwan, Zezhong Wang, Kam-Fai Wong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Generating persona consistent dialogue response is important for developing an intelligent conversational agent. Recent works typically fine-tune large-scale pre-trained models on this task by concatenating persona texts and dialogue history as a single input sequence to generate the target response. While simple and effective, our analysis shows that this popular practice is seriously affected by order sensitivity where different input orders of persona sentences significantly impact the quality and consistency of generated response, resulting in severe performance fluctuations (i.e., 29.4% on GPT2 and 83.2% on BART). To mitigate the order sensitivity problem, we propose a model-agnostic framework, ORder Insensitive Generation …

Peerda: Data Augmentation Via Modeling Peer Relation For Span Identification Tasks, Weiwen Xu, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Wai Lam, Lidong Bing
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Span identification aims at identifying specific text spans from text input and classifying them into pre-defined categories. Different from previous works that merely leverage the Subordinate (SUB) relation (i.e. if a span is an instance of a certain category) to train models, this paper for the first time explores the Peer (PR) relation, which indicates that two spans are instances of the same category and share similar features. Specifically, a novel Peer Data Augmentation (PeerDA) approach is proposed which employs span pairs with the PR relation as the augmentation data for training. PeerDA has two unique advantages: (1) There are …

Product Question Answering In E-Commerce: A Survey, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Qian Yu, Wai Lam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Product question answering (PQA), aiming to automatically provide instant responses to customer’s questions in E-Commerce platforms, has drawn increasing attention in recent years. Compared with typical QA problems, PQA exhibits unique challenges such as the subjectivity and reliability of user-generated contents in E-commerce platforms. Therefore, various problem settings and novel methods have been proposed to capture these special characteristics. In this paper, we aim to systematically review existing research efforts on PQA. Specifically, we categorize PQA studies into four problem settings in terms of the form of provided answers. We analyze the pros and cons, as well as present existing …

Goal Awareness For Conversational Ai: Proactivity, Non-Collaborativity, And Beyond, Yang Deng, Wenqiang Lei, Minlie Huang, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Conversational systems are envisioned to provide social support or functional service to human users via natural language interactions. Conventional conversation researches mainly focus on the responseability of the system, such as dialogue context understanding and response generation, but overlooks the design of an essential property in intelligent conversations, i.e., goal awareness. The awareness of goals means the state of not only being responsive to the users but also aware of the target conversational goal and capable of leading the conversation towards the goal, which is a significant step towards higher-level intelligence and artificial consciousness. It can not only largely improve …

Scanet: Self-Paced Semi-Curricular Attention Network For Non-Homogeneous Image Dehazing, Yu Guo, Yuan Gao, Ryan Wen Liu, Yuxu Lu, Jingxiang Qu, Shengfeng He, Ren Wenqi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The presence of non-homogeneous haze can cause scene blurring, color distortion, low contrast, and other degradations that obscure texture details. Existing homogeneous dehazing methods struggle to handle the non-uniform distribution of haze in a robust manner. The crucial challenge of non-homogeneous dehazing is to effectively extract the non-uniform distribution features and reconstruct the details of hazy areas with high quality. In this paper, we propose a novel self-paced semi-curricular attention network, called SCANet, for non-homogeneous image dehazing that focuses on enhancing haze-occluded regions. Our approach consists of an attention generator network and a scene re-construction network. We use the luminance …

Curricular Contrastive Regularization For Physics-Aware Single Image Dehazing, Yu Zheng, Jiahui Zhan, Shengfeng He, Yong Du
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Considering the ill-posed nature, contrastive regularization has been developed for single image dehazing, introducing the information from negative images as a lower bound. However, the contrastive samples are non-consensual, as the negatives are usually represented distantly from the clear (i.e., positive) image, leaving the solution space still under-constricted. Moreover, the interpretability of deep dehazing models is underexplored towards the physics of the hazing process. In this paper, we propose a novel curricular contrastive regularization targeted at a consensual contrastive space as opposed to a non-consensual one. Our negatives, which provide better lower-bound constraints, can be assembled from 1) the hazy …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid development of Location-Based Services (LBS), a large number of LBS providers outsource spatial data to cloud servers to reduce their high computational and storage burdens, but meanwhile incur some security issues such as location privacy leakage. Thus, extensive privacy-preserving LBS schemes have been proposed. However, the existing solutions using Bloom filter do not take into account the redundant bits that do not map information in Bloom filter, resulting in high computational overheads, and reveal the inclusion relationship in Bloom filter. To solve these issues, we propose an efficient Privacy-preserving Spatial Range Query (PSRQ) scheme by skillfully combining …
Avoiding Starvation Of Arms In Restless Multi-Armed Bandit, Dexun Li, Pradeep Varakantham
Avoiding Starvation Of Arms In Restless Multi-Armed Bandit, Dexun Li, Pradeep Varakantham
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Restless multi-armed bandits (RMAB) is a popular framework for optimizing performance with limited resources under uncertainty. It is an extremely useful model for monitoring beneficiaries (arms) and executing timely interventions using health workers (limited resources) to ensure optimal benefit in public health settings. For instance, RMAB has been used to track patients’ health and monitor their adherence in tuberculosis settings, ensure pregnant mothers listen to automated calls about good pregnancy practices, etc. Due to the limited resources, typically certain individuals, communities, or regions are starved of interventions, which can potentially have a significant negative impact on the individual/community in the …

Position-Guided Text Prompt For Vision-Language Pre-Training, Alex Jinpeng Wang, Pan Zhou, Mike Zheng Shou, Yan Shuicheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Vision-Language Pre-Training (VLP) has shown promising capabilities to align image and text pairs, facilitating a broad variety of cross-modal learning tasks. However, we observe that VLP models often lack the visual grounding/localization capability which is critical for many downstream tasks such as visual reasoning. In this work, we propose a novel Position-guided Text Prompt (PTP) paradigm to enhance the visual grounding ability of cross-modal models trained with VLP. Specifically, in the VLP phase, PTP divides the image into N x N blocks, and identifies the objects in each block through the widely used object detector in VLP. It then reformulates …
Preference-Aware Delivery Planning For Last-Mile Logistics, Qian Shao, Shih-Fen Cheng
Preference-Aware Delivery Planning For Last-Mile Logistics, Qian Shao, Shih-Fen Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Optimizing delivery routes for last-mile logistics service is challenging and has attracted the attention of many researchers. These problems are usually modeled and solved as variants of vehicle routing problems (VRPs) with challenging real-world constraints (e.g., time windows, precedence). However, despite many decades of solid research on solving these VRP instances, we still see significant gaps between optimized routes and the routes that are actually preferred by the practitioners. Most of these gaps are due to the difference between what's being optimized, and what the practitioners actually care about, which is hard to be defined exactly in many instances. In …

Imitating Opponent To Win: Adversarial Policy Imitation Learning In Two-Player Competitive Games, The Viet Bui, Tien Mai, Thanh H. Nguyen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent research on vulnerabilities of deep reinforcement learning (RL) has shown that adversarial policies adopted by an adversary agent can influence a target RL agent (victim agent) to perform poorly in a multi-agent environment. In existing studies, adversarial policies are directly trained based on experiences of interacting with the victim agent. There is a key shortcoming of this approach --- knowledge derived from historical interactions may not be properly generalized to unexplored policy regions of the victim agent, making the trained adversarial policy significantly less effective. In this work, we design a new effective adversarial policy learning algorithm that overcomes …

Ldptrace: Locally Differentially Private Trajectory Synthesis, Yuntao Du, Yujia Hu, Zhikun Zhang, Ziquan Fang, Lu Chen, Baihua Zheng, Yunjun Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Trajectory data has the potential to greatly benefit a wide-range of real-world applications, such as tracking the spread of the disease through people's movement patterns and providing personalized location-based services based on travel preference. However, privacy concerns and data protection regulations have limited the extent to which this data is shared and utilized. To overcome this challenge, local differential privacy provides a solution by allowing people to share a perturbed version of their data, ensuring privacy as only the data owners have access to the original information. Despite its potential, existing point-based perturbation mechanisms are not suitable for real-world scenarios …
Dynamic Police Patrol Scheduling With Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Songhan Wong, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau
Dynamic Police Patrol Scheduling With Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Songhan Wong, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Effective police patrol scheduling is essential in projecting police presence and ensuring readiness in responding to unexpected events in urban environments. However, scheduling patrols can be a challenging task as it requires balancing between two conflicting objectives namely projecting presence (proactive patrol) and incident response (reactive patrol). This task is made even more challenging with the fact that patrol schedules do not remain static as occurrences of dynamic incidents can disrupt the existing schedules. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem using Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) to address the Dynamic Bi-objective Police Patrol Dispatching and Rescheduling Problem …

Ifundit: Visual Profiling Of Fund Investment Styles, Rong Zhang, Bon Kyung Ku, Yong Wang, Xuanwu Yue, Siyuan Liu, Ke Li, Huamin Qu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Mutual funds are becoming increasingly popular with the emergence of Internet finance. Clear profiling of a fund's investment style is crucial for fund managers to evaluate their investment strategies, and for investors to understand their investment. However, it is challenging to profile a fund's investment style as it requires a comprehensive analysis of complex multi-dimensional temporal data. In addition, different fund managers and investors have different focuses when analysing a fund's investment style. To address the issue, we propose iFUNDit, an interactive visual analytic system for fund investment style analysis. The system decomposes a fund's critical features into performance attributes …

Mosaic: Spatially-Multiplexed Edge Ai Optimization Over Multiple Concurrent Video Sensing Streams, Ila Gokarn, Hemanth Sabbella, Yigong Hu, Tarek Abdelzaher, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sustaining high fidelity and high throughput of perception tasks over vision sensor streams on edge devices remains a formidable challenge, especially given the continuing increase in image sizes (e.g., generated by 4K cameras) and complexity of DNN models. One promising approach involves criticality-aware processing, where the computation is directed selectively to "critical" portions of individual image frames. We introduce MOSAIC, a novel system for such criticality-aware concurrent processing of multiple vision sensing streams that provides a multiplicative increase in the achievable throughput with negligible loss in perception fidelity. MOSAIC determines critical regions from images received from multiple vision …

A Mixed-Integer Linear Programming Reduction Of Disjoint Bilinear Programs Via Symbolic Variable Elimination, Jihwan Jeong, Scott Sanner, Akshat Kumar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A disjointly constrained bilinear program (DBLP) has various practical and industrial applications, e.g., in game theory, facility location, supply chain management, and multi-agent planning problems. Although earlier work has noted the equivalence of DBLP and mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) from an abstract theoretical perspective, a practical and exact closed-form reduction of a DBLP to a MILP has remained elusive. Such explicit reduction would allow us to leverage modern MILP solvers and techniques along with their solution optimality and anytime approximation guarantees. To this end, we provide the first constructive closed-form MILP reduction of a DBLP by extending the technique of …

Passive Displacement Cooling (PDC) has gained popularity as a means of significantly reducing building energy consumption overheads, especially in tropical climates. PDC eliminates the use of mechanical fans, instead using chilled-water heat exchangers to perform convective cooling. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of different parameters affecting occupant comfort in a 1000m2 open-floor area (consisting of multiple zones) of a ZEB (Zero Energy Building) deployed with PDC units and tackle the problem of setting the temperature setpoint of the PDC units to assure occupant thermal comfort. We tackle two key practical challenges: (a) the zone-level (i.e., occupant-experienced) temperature differs …

Multi-Head Attention Graph Convolutional Network Model: End-To-End Entity And Relation Joint Extraction Based On Multi-Head Attention Graph Convolutional Network, Zhihua Tao, Chunping Ouyang, Yongbin Liu, Tonglee Chung, Yixin Cao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
At present, the entity and relation joint extraction task has attracted more and more scholars' attention in the field of natural language processing (NLP). However, most of their methods rely on NLP tools to construct dependency trees to obtain sentence structure information. The adjacency matrix constructed by the dependency tree can convey syntactic information. Dependency trees obtained through NLP tools are too dependent on the tools and may not be very accurate in contextual semantic description. At the same time, a large amount of irrelevant information will cause redundancy. This paper presents a novel end-to-end entity and relation joint extraction …

In this report, we present our champion solution for Ego4D Natural Language Queries (NLQ) Challenge in CVPR 2023. Essentially, to accurately ground in a video, an effective egocentric feature extractor and a powerful grounding model are required. Motivated by this, we leverage a two-stage pre-training strategy to train egocentric feature extractors and the grounding model on video narrations, and further fine-tune the model on annotated data. In addition, we introduce a novel grounding model GroundNLQ, which employs a multi-modal multiscale grounding module for effective video and text fusion and various temporal intervals, especially for long videos. On the blind test …

Location-Based Services (LBSs) are one of the most frequently used mobile applications in the modern society. Geo-Indistinguishability (Geo-Ind) is a promising privacy protection model for LBSs since it can provide formal security guarantees for location privacy. However, Geo-Ind undermines the statistical location distribution of users on the LBS server because of perturbed locations, thereby disabling the server to provide distribution-based services (e.g., traffic congestion maps). To overcome this issue, we give a privacy definition, called DistPreserv, to enable the LBS server to acquire valid location distributions while providing users with strict location protection. Then we propose a privacy-preserving LBS scheme …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Previous Knowledge Distillation based efficient image retrieval methods employ a lightweight network as the student model for fast inference. However, the lightweight student model lacks adequate representation capacity for effective knowledge imitation during the most critical early training period, causing final performance degeneration. To tackle this issue, we propose a Capacity Dynamic Distillation framework, which constructs a student model with editable representation capacity. Specifically, the employed student model is initially a heavy model to fruitfully learn distilled knowledge in the early training epochs, and the student model is gradually compressed during the training. To dynamically adjust the model capacity, our …

Although Multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (MADRL) has shown promising results in solving complex real-world problems, the applicability and reliability of MADRL models are often limited by a lack of understanding of their inner workings for explaining the decisions made. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel method for explaining MADRL by generalizing the sequences of action events performed by agents into high-level abstract strategies using a spatio-temporal neural network model. Specifically, an interval-based memory retrieval procedure is developed to generalize the encoded sequences of action events over time into short sequential patterns. In addition, two abstraction algorithms are …

Where Is My Spot? Few-Shot Image Generation Via Latent Subspace Optimization, Chenxi Zheng, Bangzhen Liu, Huaidong Zhang, Xuemiao Xu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Image generation relies on massive training data that can hardly produce diverse images of an unseen category according to a few examples. In this paper, we address this dilemma by projecting sparse few-shot samples into a continuous latent space that can potentially generate infinite unseen samples. The rationale behind is that we aim to locate a centroid latent position in a conditional StyleGAN, where the corresponding output image on that centroid can maximize the similarity with the given samples. Although the given samples are unseen for the conditional StyleGAN, we assume the neighboring latent subspace around the centroid belongs to …
