Conventional machine learning methods are predominantly designed to predict outcomes based on a single data type. However, practical applications may encompass data of diverse types, such as text, images, and audio. We introduce interpretable tensor fusion (InTense), a multimodal learning method training a neural network to simultaneously learn multiple data representations and their interpretable fusion. InTense can separately capture both linear combinations and multiplicative interactions of the data types, thereby disentangling higher-order interactions from the individual effects of each modality. InTense provides interpretability out of the box by assigning relevance scores to modalities and their associations, respectively. The approach is …

Existing neural heuristics often train a deep architecture from scratch for each specific vehicle routing problem (VRP), ignoring the transferable knowledge across different VRP variants. This paper proposes the cross-problem learning to assist heuristics training for different downstream VRP variants. Particularly, we modularize neural architectures for complex VRPs into 1) the backbone Transformer for tackling the travelling salesman problem (TSP), and 2) the additional lightweight modules for processing problem-specific features in complex VRPs. Accordingly, we propose to pre-train the backbone Transformer for TSP, and then apply it in the process of fine-tuning the Transformer models for each target VRP variant. …

Task Scheduling Strategy For 3dpcp Considering Multidynamic Information Perturbation In Green Scene, Jianjia He, Jian Wu, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The 3D printing cloud platform (3DPCP) plays a pivotal role in breaking down the information silos between supply and demand, effectively reducing waste through information integration and intelligent production. However, due to the complexity of 3DPCP scheduling in green scenes and the multidynamic information perturbations, unveils problems in traditional task scheduling methods in 3DPCP. These issues manifest as incomplete considerations, subpar green performance, and weak adaptability to dynamic changes. There is an urgent need to design practical methods to realize the multidynamic information perturbations in green scenes within 3DPCP. Therefore, this article first defines the 3DPCP task scheduling problem for …

Peep With A Mirror: Breaking The Integrity Of Android App Sandboxing Via Unprivileged Cache Side Channel, Yan Lin, Joshua Wong, Xiang Li, Haoyu Ma, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Application sandboxing is a well-established security principle employed in the Android platform to safeguard sensitive information. However, hardware resources, specifically the CPU caches, are beyond the protection of this software-based mechanism, leaving room for potential side-channel attacks. Existing attacks against this particular weakness of app sandboxing mainly target shared components among apps, hence can only observe system-level program dynamics (such as UI tracing). In this work, we advance cache side-channel attacks by demonstrating the viability of non-intrusive and fine-grained probing across different app sandboxes, which have the potential to uncover app-specific and private program behaviors, thereby highlighting the importance of …

Optimization Of Customer Service And Driver Dispatch Areas For On-Demand Food Delivery, Jingfeng Yang, Hoong Chuin Lau, Hai Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid development and popularization of mobile and wireless communication technologies, on-demand food delivery (OFD) platforms have been able to connect restaurants, customers, and drivers in real time, drastically changing dining and food delivery services. Motivated by the critical need for supply and demand management in the on-demand food delivery market, we focus on the optimization of customer service area and driver dispatch area for on-demand food delivery services. Specifically, for each restaurant, the platform needs to decide the (1) customer service area (CSA), i.e., the surrounding area within which customers can see the restaurant’s information and order food …

A Learned Generalized Geodesic Distance Function-Based Approach For Node Feature Augmentation On Graphs, Amitoz Azad, Yuan Fang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Geodesic distances on manifolds have numerous applications in image processing, computer graphics and computer vision. In this work, we introduce an approach called 'LGGD' (Learned Generalized Geodesic Distances). This method involves generating node features by learning a generalized geodesic distance function through a training pipeline that incorporates training data, graph topology and the node content features. The strength of this method lies in the proven robustness of the generalized geodesic distances to noise and outliers. Our contributions encompass improved performance in node classification tasks, competitive results with state-of-the-art methods on real-world graph datasets, the demonstration of the learnability of parameters …

In proactive dialogue, the challenge lies not just in generating responses but in steering conversations toward predetermined goals, a task where Large Language Models (LLMs) typically struggle due to their reactive nature. Traditional approaches to enhance dialogue planning in LLMs, ranging from elaborate prompt engineering to the integration of policy networks, either face efficiency issues or deliver suboptimal performance. Inspired by the dual-process theory in psychology, which identifies two distinct modes of thinking—intuitive (fast) and analytical (slow), we propose the Dual-Process Dialogue Planning (DPDP) framework. DPDP embodies this theory through two complementary planning systems: an instinctive policy model for familiar …

Unifying Global-Local Representations In Salient Object Detection With Transformers, Sucheng Ren, Nanxuan Zhao, Qiang Wen, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The fully convolutional network (FCN) has dominated salient object detection for a long period. However, the locality of CNN requires the model deep enough to have a global receptive field and such a deep model always leads to the loss of local details. In this paper, we introduce a new attention-based encoder, vision transformer, into salient object detection to ensure the globalization of the representations from shallow to deep layers. With the global view in very shallow layers, the transformer encoder preserves more local representations to recover the spatial details in final saliency maps. Besides, as each layer can capture …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Policy-Space Response Oracles (PSRO) as a general algorithmic framework has achieved state-of-the-art performance in learning equilibrium policies of two-player zero-sum games. However, the hand-crafted hyperparameter value selection in most of the existing works requires extensive domain knowledge, forming the main barrier to applying PSRO to different games. In this work, we make the first attempt to investigate the possibility of self-adaptively determining the optimal hyperparameter values in the PSRO framework. Our contributions are three-fold: (1) Using several hyperparameters, we propose a parametric PSRO that unifies the gradient descent ascent (GDA) and different PSRO variants. (2) We propose the self-adaptive PSRO …

High-frequency trading (HFT) that executes algorithmic trading in short time scales, has recently occupied the majority of cryptocurrency market. Besides traditional quantitative trading methods, reinforcement learning (RL) has become another appealing approach for HFT due to its terrific ability of handling high-dimensional financial data and solving sophisticated sequential decision-making problems, e.g., hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) has shown its promising performance on second-level HFT by training a router to select only one sub-agent from the agent pool to execute the current transaction. However, existing RL methods for HFT still have some defects: 1) standard RL-based trading agents suffer from the overfitting …

Topic Modeling On Document Networks With Dirichlet Optimal Transport Barycenter, Ce Zhang, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Text documents are often interconnected in a network structure, e.g., academic papers via citations, Web pages via hyperlinks. On the one hand, though Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown promising ability to derive effective embeddings for such networked documents, they do not assume a latent topic structure and result in uninterpretable embeddings. On the other hand, topic models can infer semantically interpretable topic distributions for documents by associating each topic with a group of understandable key words. However, most topic models mainly focus on plain text within documents and fail to leverage network structure across documents. Network connectivity reveals topic …

Reinforcement Nash Equilibrium Solver, Xinrun Wang, Chang Yang, Shuxin Li, Pengdeng Li, Xiao Huang, Hau Chan, Bo An
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Nash Equilibrium (NE) is the canonical solution concept of game theory, which provides an elegant tool to understand the rationalities. Though mixed strategy NE exists in any game with finite players and actions, computing NE in two- or multi-player general-sum games is PPAD-Complete. Various alternative solutions, e.g., Correlated Equilibrium (CE), and learning methods, e.g., fictitious play (FP), are proposed to approximate NE. For convenience, we call these methods as "inexact solvers", or "solvers" for short. However, the alternative solutions differ from NE and the learning methods generally fail to converge to NE. Therefore, in this work, we propose REinforcement Nash …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Algorithmic detection of facial palsy offers the potential to improve current practices, which usually involve labor-intensive and subjective assessment by clinicians. In this paper, we present a multimodal fusion-based deep learning model that utilizes unstructured data (i.e. an image frame with facial line segments) and structured data (i.e. features of facial expressions) to detect facial palsy. We then contribute to a study to analyze the effect of different data modalities and the benefits of a multimodal fusion-based approach using videos of 21 facial palsy patients. Our experimental results show that among various data modalities (i.e. unstructured data - RGB images …

Towards Gradient-Based Time-Series Explanations Through A Spatiotemporal Attention Network, Min Hun Lee
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we explore the feasibility of using a transformer-based, spatiotemporal attention network (STAN) for gradient-based time-series explanations. First, we trained the STAN model for video classifications using the global and local views of data and weakly supervised labels on time-series data (i.e. the type of an activity). We then leveraged a gradient-based XAI technique (e.g. saliency map) to identify salient frames of time-series data. According to the experiments using the datasets of four medically relevant activities, the STAN model demonstrated its potential to identify important frames of videos.

In the evolving landscape of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, integrating gamification shows promise for enhancing user training and education. However, empirical research on gamification's effect on intrinsic motivation in using ERP is limited. Hence, we examined the intrinsic motivational effects of a gamified ERP environment in this research. We created a Gamified Web Application linked to SAP ERP to investigate how gamification affects users' behavioral intention. Leveraging self-determination theory, we examined the influence of perceived competence, autonomy, and relatedness on usage intent. In a controlled experiment with 63 participants, data collected via survey revealed that gamification enhances perceived competence, …

A Deep Learning Method To Predict Bacterial Adp-Ribosyltransferase Toxins, Dandan Zheng, Siyu Zhou, Lihong Chen, Guansong Pang, Jian Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Motivation: ADP-ribosylation is a critical modification involved in regulating diverse cellular processes, including chromatin structure regulation, RNA transcription, and cell death. Bacterial ADP-ribosyltransferase toxins (bARTTs) serve as potent virulence factors that orchestrate the manipulation of host cell functions to facilitate bacterial pathogenesis. Despite their pivotal role, the bioinformatic identification of novel bARTTs poses a formidable challenge due to limited verified data and the inherent sequence diversity among bARTT members. Results: We proposed a deep learning-based model, ARTNet, specifically engineered to predict bARTTs from bacterial genomes. Initially, we introduced an effective data augmentation method to address the issue of data scarcity …
Generalization Analysis Of Deep Nonlinear Matrix Completion, Antoine Ledent, Rodrigo Alves
Generalization Analysis Of Deep Nonlinear Matrix Completion, Antoine Ledent, Rodrigo Alves
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We provide generalization bounds for matrix completion with Schatten $p$ quasi-norm constraints, which is equivalent to deep matrix factorization with Frobenius constraints. In the uniform sampling regime, the sample complexity scales like $\widetilde{O}\left( rn\right)$ where $n$ is the size of the matrix and $r$ is a constraint of the same order as the ground truth rank in the isotropic case. In the distribution-free setting, the bounds scale as $\widetilde{O}\left(r^{1-\frac{p}{2}}n^{1+\frac{p}{2}}\right)$, which reduces to the familiar $\sqrt{r}n^{\frac{3}{2}}$ for $p=1$. Furthermore, we provide an analogue of the weighted trace norm for this setting which brings the sample complexity down to $\widetilde{O}(nr)$ in all …

Modern smart TVs often communicate with their remote controls (including the smartphone simulated ones) using multiple wireless channels (e.g., Infrared, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi). However, this multi-channel remote control communication introduces a new attack surface. An inherent security flaw is that remote controls of most smart TVs are designed to work in a benign environment rather than an adversarial one, and thus wireless communications between a smart TV and its remote controls are not strongly protected. Attackers can leverage such a flaw to abuse the remote control communication and compromise smart TV systems. In this paper, we propose EvilScreen, a novel …

Generative AI tools can provide people with the ability to create virtual environments and scenes with natural language prompts. Yet, how people will formulate such prompts is unclear---particularly when they inhabit the environment that they are designing. For instance, it is likely that a person might say, "Put a chair here,'' while pointing at a location. If such linguistic and embodied features are common to people's prompts, we need to tune models to accommodate them. In this work, we present a Wizard of Oz elicitation study with 22 participants, where we studied people's implicit expectations when verbally prompting such programming …

Modern Android apps consist of both host app code and third-party libraries. Traditional static analysis tools conduct taint analysis for API misuses on the entire app code, while third-party library (TPL) detection tools focus solely on library code. Both approaches, however, are prone to some inherent false negatives: taint analysis tools may neglect third-party libraries or face timeouts/errors in whole app-based analysis, and TPL detection tools are not designed for pinpointing specific vulnerable methods. These challenges underscore the need for enhanced identification of insecure methods in Android apps, particularly for app markets addressing open-source security incidents. In this paper, we …

Prioritising Github Priority Labels, James Caddy, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Communities on GitHub often use issue labels as a way of triaging issues by assigning them priority ratings based on how urgently they should be addressed. The labels used are determined by the repository contributors and notstandardisedbyGitHub.Thismakes it difficult for priority-related reasoning across repositories for both researchers and contributors. Previous work shows interest in how issues are labelled and what the consequences for those labels are. For instance, some previous work has used clustering models and natural language processing to categorise labels without a particular emphasis on priority. With this publication, we introduce a unique data set of 812 manually …

Attribute-based anonymous credentials offer users fine-grained access control in a privacy-preserving manner. However, in such schemes obtaining a user's credentials requires knowledge of the issuer's public key, which obviously reveals the issuer's identity that must be hidden from users in certain scenarios. Moreover, verifying a user's credentials also requires the knowledge of issuer's public key, which may infer the user's private information from their choice of issuer. In this article, we introduce the notion of double issuer-hiding attribute-based credentials ( DIHAC ) to tackle these two problems. In our model, a central authority can issue public-key credentials for a group …

Wildcard Keyword Searchable Encryption (WKSE) enables users to search desired encrypted files with wildcard queries. Previous schemes only enabled single-character wildcard queries or restricted multi-character wildcard queries. Even if the two types of queries are supported by several schemes, they are vulnerable to correlation attacks and composition attacks. In this paper, we propose a WKSE scheme Secure Flexible Wildcard Queries (SFWQ) that supports highly flexible wildcard queries and resists correlation and composition attacks. Specifically, we adopt the interval matching method instead of traditional position matching, so that SFWQ supports a variety of queries, including single-character wildcard queries, multi-character wildcard queries, …

Recent research on proactive conversational agents (PCAs) mainly focuses on improving the system's capabilities in anticipating and planning action sequences to accomplish tasks and achieve goals before users articulate their requests. This perspectives paper highlights the importance of moving towards building human-centered PCAs that emphasize human needs and expectations, and that considers ethical and social implications of these agents, rather than solely focusing on technological capabilities. The distinction between a proactive and a reactive system lies in the proactive system's initiative-taking nature. Without thoughtful design, proactive systems risk being perceived as intrusive by human users. We address the issue by …

Certified Robust Accuracy Of Neural Networks Are Bounded Due To Bayes Errors, Ruihan Zhang, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Adversarial examples pose a security threat to many critical systems built on neural networks. While certified training improves robustness, it also decreases accuracy noticeably. Despite various proposals for addressing this issue, the significant accuracy drop remains. More importantly, it is not clear whether there is a certain fundamental limit on achieving robustness whilst maintaining accuracy. In this work, we offer a novel perspective based on Bayes errors. By adopting Bayes error to robustness analysis, we investigate the limit of certified robust accuracy, taking into account data distribution uncertainties. We first show that the accuracy inevitably decreases in the pursuit of …

Exploring The Market Impact Of Web3 Identity Imitation In Ethereum Name Service, Ping Fan Ke, Yi Meng Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Digital identities are paramount in today’s digital landscape. However, in the Web3 ecosystem, the absence of a central governing body leaves digital identities, such as domain names, vulnerable to cybersquatting and identity imitation. This study examines the market impact of identity imitation in the Web3 ecosystem. By scrutinizing trading activities within Web3 domain names from Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and its imitator, "Ether Name Service," we found that the presence of a newly imitating domain name increases the subsequent resale value of the authentic domain name. Additionally, we find a positive correlation between the resale value of the imitating domain …

Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained considerable popularity, driven in part by an increased concern for the impact of automobile emissions on climate change. Electric vehicles (EVs) cover more than just conventional cars and trucks. They also include electric motorcycles, such as those produced by Gogoro, which serve as the primary mode of transportation for food and package delivery services in Taiwan. Consequently, the Electric Vehicle Routing Problem (EVRP) has emerged as an important variation of the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). In addition to the CVRP’s constraints, the EVRP requires vehicles to visit a charging station before the battery level …
