Testing The Forensic Soundness Of Forensic Examination Environments On Bootable Media, Ahmed Fathy Abdul Latif Mohamed, Andrew Marrington, Farkhund Iqbal, Ibrahim Baggili
All Works
In this work we experimentally examine the forensic soundness of the use of forensic bootable CD/DVDs as forensic examination environments. Several Linux distributions with bootable CD/DVDs which are marketed as forensic examination environments are used to perform a forensic analysis of a captured computer system. Before and after the bootable CD/DVD examination, the computer system's hard disk is removed and a forensic image acquired by a second system using a hardware write blocker. The images acquired before and after the bootable CD/DVD examination are hashed and the hash values compared. Where the hash values are inconsistent, a differential analysis is …
Ensemble Artifact Design For Context Sensitive Decision Support, Shah Jahan Miah, John G. Gammack
Ensemble Artifact Design For Context Sensitive Decision Support, Shah Jahan Miah, John G. Gammack
All Works
Although an improvement of design knowledge is an essential goal of design research, current design research predominantly focuses on knowledge concerning the IT artifact (tool) design process, rather than a more holistic understanding encompassing the dynamic usage contexts of a technological artifact. Conceptualising a design in context as an "ensemble artifact" (Sein et al., 2011) provides the basis for a more rigorous treatment. This paper describes an IS artifact design framework that has been generated from the development of several practitioner-oriented decision support systems (DSS) in which contextual aspects relevant to practitioners' decision making are considered as integral design themes. …

Small scale digital device forensics is particularly critical as a result of the mobility of these devices, leading to closer proximity to crimes as they occur when compared to computers. The Windows Surface tablet is one such device, combining tablet mobility with familiar Microsoft Windows productivity tools. This research considers the acquisition and forensic analysis of the Windows Surface RT tablet. We discuss the artifacts of both the Windows RT operating system and third-party applications. The contribution of this research is to provide a road map for the digital forensic examination of Windows Surface RT tablets.

The 2012-2013 academic year has seen the beginning of a national initiative in the United Arab Emirates to equip all students in federal universities/colleges with iPads, and to make use of this mobile device in teaching and learning. Within the context of this national initiative, each federal institution (Zayed University, UAE University and the Higher Colleges of Technology) has begun to implement iPads in its curriculum, and to gather data about this implementation to inform further development. In this paper, representatives of the three federal institutions map out the research approach which they are taking to investigate the progress of …
Accessibility Evaluation Of Dubai E-Government Websites: Findings And Implications, M. Basel Al Mourad, Faouzi Kamoun
Accessibility Evaluation Of Dubai E-Government Websites: Findings And Implications, M. Basel Al Mourad, Faouzi Kamoun

Most governments today are promoting the transition of their countries towards an information society where e-Government websites are becoming the primary gateways to citizens and businesses for government information and eservice delivery. E-Government can be broadly defined as the unification of information and communication technologies, and administrative practices to provide government e-services to citizens, businesses and other e-Governments (Deakins and Dillon, 2002). The benefits of online government e-services include better efficiency, user convenience and more citizen political involvement (Freeman and Loo, 2009). To enable all citizens to benefit from the full potential of eGovernment services, it is important to secure …
Using Tabu Search To Configure Support Vector Regression For Effort Estimation, A. Corazza, S. Di Martino, F. Ferrucci, C. Gravino, F. Sarro, E. Mendes
Using Tabu Search To Configure Support Vector Regression For Effort Estimation, A. Corazza, S. Di Martino, F. Ferrucci, C. Gravino, F. Sarro, E. Mendes

Recent studies have reported that Support Vector Regression (SVR) has the potential as a technique for software development effort estimation. However, its prediction accuracy is heavily influenced by the setting of parameters that needs to be done when employing it. No general guidelines are available to select these parameters, whose choice also depends on the characteristics of the dataset being used. This motivated the work described in (Corazza et al. 2010), extended herein. In order to automatically select suitable SVR parameters we proposed an approach based on the use of the meta-heuristics Tabu Search (TS). We designed TS to search …

Ipad2 Logical Acquisition: Automated Or Manual Examination?, Somaya Ali, Sumaya Alhosani, Farah Alzarooni, Ibrahim Baggili

Due to their usage increase worldwide, iPads are on the path of becoming key sources of digital evidence in criminal investigations. This research investigated the logical backup acquisition and examination of the iPad2 device using the Apple iTunes backup utility while manually examining the backup data (manual examination) and automatically parsing the backup data (Lantern software automated examination). The results indicate that a manual examination of the logical backup structure from iTunes reveals more digital evidence, especially if installed application data is required for an investigation. However, the researchers note that if a quick triage is needed of an iOS …
Forensic Analysis Of Social Networking Applications On Mobile Devices, Noora Al Mutawa, Ibrahim Baggili, Andrew Marrington
Forensic Analysis Of Social Networking Applications On Mobile Devices, Noora Al Mutawa, Ibrahim Baggili, Andrew Marrington
All Works
The increased use of social networking applications on smartphones makes these devices a goldmine for forensic investigators. Potential evidence can be held on these devices and recovered with the right tools and examination methods. This paper focuses on conducting forensic analyses on three widely used social networking applications on smartphones: Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. The tests were conducted on three popular smartphones: BlackBerrys, iPhones, and Android phones. The tests consisted of installing the social networking applications on each device, conducting common user activities through each application, acquiring a forensically sound logical image of each device, and performing manual forensic analysis …
Performance Analysis Of Two Priority Queuing Systems In Tandem, Faouzi Kamoun
Performance Analysis Of Two Priority Queuing Systems In Tandem, Faouzi Kamoun
All Works
In this paper, we consider a tandem of two head-of-line (HOL) non-preemptive priority queuing systems, each with a single server and a deterministic service-time. Two classes of traffic are considered, namely high priority and low priority traffic. By means of a generating function approach, we present a technique to derive closed-form expressions for the mean buffer occupancy at each node and mean delay. Finally, we illustrate our solution technique with some numerical examples, whereby we illustrate the starvation impact of the HOL priority scheduling discipline on the performance of the low-priority traffic stream. Our research highlights the important fact that …

In this paper we present the current results and analysis of the survey "Cloud forensics and critical criteria for cloud forensic capability" carried out towards digital forensic experts and practitioners. This survey was created in order to gain a better understanding on some of the key questions of the new field - cloud forensics - before further research and development. We aim to understand concepts such as its definition, the most challenging issues, most valuable research directions, and the critical criteria for cloud forensic capability.
Cat Detect (Computer Activity Timeline Detection): A Tool For Detecting Inconsistency In Computer Activity Timelines, Andrew Marrington, Ibrahim Baggili, George Mohay, Andrew Clark
Cat Detect (Computer Activity Timeline Detection): A Tool For Detecting Inconsistency In Computer Activity Timelines, Andrew Marrington, Ibrahim Baggili, George Mohay, Andrew Clark
All Works
The construction of timelines of computer activity is a part of many digital investigations. These timelines of events are composed of traces of historical activity drawn from system logs and potentially from evidence of events found in the computer file system. A potential problem with the use of such information is that some of it may be inconsistent and contradictory thus compromising its value. This work introduces a software tool (CAT Detect) for the detection of inconsistency within timelines of computer activity. We examine the impact of deliberate tampering through experiments conducted with our prototype software tool. Based on the …
Composite Web Services Formation Using A Social Network Of Web Services: A Preliminary Investigation, Said Elnaffar, Zakaria Maamar
Composite Web Services Formation Using A Social Network Of Web Services: A Preliminary Investigation, Said Elnaffar, Zakaria Maamar
All Works
A composite Web service, such as arranging a travel to a conference, can be viewed as a project team that is comprised of several members who want to collaborate in order to accomplish a specific goal. In this work, we propose an algorithm for searching a social network of Web services in order to select an effective set of Web services that can collaborate in order to attain the main goal of the composite Web service at hand. Ultimately, the selection algorithm takes into consideration the set of functions that each Web services member possesses, e.g., hotel booking, car rental, …
Ontologies For Specifying And Reconciling Contexts Of Web Services, S. Sattanathan, N. C. Narendra, Z. Maamar
Ontologies For Specifying And Reconciling Contexts Of Web Services, S. Sattanathan, N. C. Narendra, Z. Maamar
All Works
This paper presents an ontology-based approach for the specification (using OWL-C as a definition language) and reconciliation (using ConWeS as a mediation tool) of contexts of Web services. Web services are independent components that can be triggered and composed for the satisfaction of user needs (e.g., hotel booking). Because Web services originate from different providers, their composition faces the obstacle of the context heterogeneity featuring these Web services. An unawareness of this context heterogeneity during Web services composition and execution results in a lack of the quality and relevancy of information that permits tracking the composition, monitoring the execution, and …
