A Framework For Processing Viewer-Based Directional Queries In A Simulated Mobile Environment, Keith Gardiner

Masters

With the steady and fast advancements in the integration of geographic information systems and mobile location-based services, interest in exploiting this technology for Cultural Heritage (CH) data sharing has become apparent. In this area there has been an increasing need to integrate positional information with non-positional data and add a spatial dimension to the definition of a users “context” In this research the integration of Cultural Heritage information coupled with spatial technologies is investigated. The idea is based on a 3-tier architecture that positions the user at the client layer with a mobile device, a spatial query processor in the …

An Analysis Of Case-Base Editing In A Spam Filtering Systems, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham Jan 2004

An Analysis Of Case-Base Editing In A Spam Filtering Systems, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham

Conference papers

Because of the changing nature of spam, a spam filtering system that uses machine learning will need to be dynamic. This suggests that a case-based (memory-based) approach may work well. Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is a lazy approach to machine learning where induction is delayed to run time. This means that the case base can be updated continuously and new training data is immediately available to the induction process. In this paper we present a detailed description of such a system called ECUE and evaluate design decisions concerning the case representation. We compare its performance with an alternative system that uses …

Virtual Personal Assistants In A Pervasive Computing World, John F. Bradley, Brian R. Duffy, Gregory O'Hare, Alan Martin, Bianca Schoen-Phelan

Conference papers

Computing paradigms are constantly evolving-from mainframe to desktop, and on to ubiquitous computing. With a wide variety of devices, each with varying constraints, it would be quite difficult to develop services that would operate in a uniform manner across all platforms. With this in mind we offer an agent based solution. Agent attributes of autonomy, adaptability and mobility make them highly suitable for use in pervasive computing environments. Agent Chameleons illustrates a framework for Virtual Personal Assistants (VPA) for the information age. This paper briefly outlines some of the technologies and concepts that underpin the functionality of a VPA.

An Agent-Based Approach To Adaptive Navigational Support Within 3d-Environments, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Gregory O'Hare, Brian Duffy, Alan Martin

Conference papers

his paper investigates mechanisms and approaches to assisting user navigation and exploration within 3-dimensional worlds. Specifically it advocates the deployment of an agentbased approach to dynamic system assistance and intervention. A performance equation is presented in a basic and an extended version, which is used to activate system interventions and to evaluate user performances online and offline. The measure is derived via a light-weight computationally inexpensive masking approach. We describe some navigation experiments and the results of navigational intervention via the damping of the sensitivity of the navigational keys. Interestingly the navigational assistance does not yield improvements in the subjects’ …

Viewer-Based Directional Querying For Mobile Applications, Keith Gardiner, James Carswell

Conference papers

With the steady and fast advancements in the integration of geographic information systems and mobile location-based services, interest in exploiting this technology for Cultural Heritage (CH) data sharing has become apparent. In this area there has been an increasing need to integrate positional information with non-positional data and add a spatial dimension to the definition of a users “context”. In this paper we describe an implementation of a viewer-based directional query processor that operates on an Oracle Spatial database. The spatial position and orientation are taken from the viewer’s perspective. Using this frame of reference a view-port is defined in …

Reply To "Comment On ‘Atomic Spectral Line Free-Parameter Deconvolution Procedure’”, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Goran Poparic

Articles

We do not agree with the authors of the preceding Comment [X. Nikolic, X. Ojurovic, and X. Mijatovic, Phys. Rev. E, 67, 058401, 2003]. Our numerical procedure for the deconvolution of the theoretical asymmetric convolution integral of a Gaussian and a plasma broadened spectral line profile jA,R(λ) for spectral lines enables the determination of all broadening parameters. All broadening parameters can be determined directly from the recorded line profile of a single line, with minimal assumptions or prior knowledge. Additional experimental diagnostics are not required.

On-Line Spatial Processing Systems, James Carswell, Michela Bertolotto Apr 2003

On-Line Spatial Processing Systems, James Carswell, Michela Bertolotto

Articles

On-line Spatial Processing (OLSP) delivers high performance spatial systems for the modelling and monitoring of dynamic environments. It provides an ideal solution for the management of networks, land and assets, and the real-time tracking of changing spatial systems. OLSP is server-centric, as opposed to the primarily desktop-centric world of GIS. It places spatial data at the heart of the organisation's IT systems and integrates it with business and attribute data. The result is more effective use of spatial data and improved decision support and spatial intelligence throughout the organisation.

Agent Chameleons: Agent Minds And Bodies, Brian Duffy, Gregory O'Hare, Alan Martin, John Bradley, Bianca Schoen-Phelan

Conference papers

Agent design has to date concerned itself with the issues pertaining to a single body embedded in a single environment, whether virtual or real. This paper discusses the notion of an agent capable of migrating between information spaces (physical worlds, virtual reality, and digital information spaces). An architecture is presented that facilitates agent migration and mutation within such environments. This will in turn support agent

evolution the ultimate in agent adaptivity

A Framework To Utilise Urban Bus Data For Advanced Data Analysis, Markus Hofmann, Brendan Tierney, Margaret M. O'Mahony Jan 2003

A Framework To Utilise Urban Bus Data For Advanced Data Analysis, Markus Hofmann, Brendan Tierney, Margaret M. O'Mahony

Conference papers

Most urban bus operators collect detailed data on their respective transportation networks using electronic fare collection systems. However, contrary to the opinion of other service industries that this data is a valuable resource, many bus operators have tended not to fully utilise these resources. International experience suggests using innovative technologies and methodologies such as data warehousing, Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), and data mining, to derive the maximum benefit from this data. Still bus operators tend not to keep the full range of data in a form, which is easy to access or utilise, and therefore, are not able to apply …

Digital Image Similarity For Geo-Spatial Knowledge Management, James Carswell Sep 2002

Digital Image Similarity For Geo-Spatial Knowledge Management, James Carswell

Conference papers

The amount and availability of high-quality geo-spatial image data, such as digital satellite and aerial photographs, is increasing dramatically. Task-based management of such visual information and associated knowledge is a central concern for organisations that rely on digital imagery. We are developing geo-spatial knowledge management techniques that employ case-based reasoning as the core methodology. In order to provide effective retrieval of task-based experiences that center around geo-spatial imagery, we need to forward novel similarity metrics for directly comparing the image components of experience cases. Based on work in geo-spatial image database retrieval, we are building an effective similarity metric for …

An Environment For Mobile Context-Based Hypermedia Retrieval, James Carswell Sep 2002

An Environment For Mobile Context-Based Hypermedia Retrieval, James Carswell

Conference papers

This paper proposes a novel solution to querying hyperlinked multimedia cultural heritage datasets based on the user's context. Context in this sense is defined as the user's location in virtual space and the particular mobile device being modeled together with user preferences or profile. The purpose is to automatically push relevant data from the database server to the client based on this comprehensive definition of the user's context. Consideration in regard to which mobile device is currently being modeled is a primary filter for determining what data will be sent and in what format. For example, image data will not …

Geospatial Data Handling For Web-Based And Mobile Applications, James Carswell Jul 2002

Geospatial Data Handling For Web-Based And Mobile Applications, James Carswell

Articles

One of the main bottlenecks for web-based GIS usability is in the transmission and handling of the vast amounts of geospatial data involved. The shear volume of raster, vector, attribute, and other data to be analysed, queried, transmitted and displayed over the WWW in real-time is prohibited by connection speeds. In this paper we introduce e-Spatial technology, a fully integrated open standard web-based solution to manage multiple spatial relationships directly in an Oracle Spatial database and to deploy in real-time spatially enabled (or standard) applications completely independent of data volume. Indeed, no application code is ever installed on the client …

The application utilises the e-SpatialTM Information Server to deliver a spatially enabled …

Development Of A Real-Time Digital Acquisition Software System For The Ocean Optics S1000 Spectrometer, Stephen Fennell Jun 2002

Development Of A Real-Time Digital Acquisition Software System For The Ocean Optics S1000 Spectrometer, Stephen Fennell

Masters

The objective of the M. Phil degree project was to improve the digital acquisition speed of the existing Ocean Optic I/O S1000 spectrometer system. Research carried out prior to this research work indicated that the existing system, although allowing for successful spectroscopic measurements, did not provide for a true time-base required for time-resolved spectroscopy. The analogue/digital speed aspects of the I/O were investigated and shortcomings were found in the digital I/O of the system. These shortcomings were investigated and the existing Ocean Optics software was found to have a considerable role in the lack of overall acquisition speed. Various Ocean …

Scale And Orientation-Invariant Scene Similarity Metrics For Image Queries, James Carswell Jan 2002

Scale And Orientation-Invariant Scene Similarity Metrics For Image Queries, James Carswell

Articles

In this paper we extend our previous work on shape-based queries to support queries on configurations of image objects. Here we consider spatial reasoning, especially directional and metric object relationships. Existing models for spatial reasoning tend to rely on pre-identified cardinal directions and minimal scale variations, assumption that cannot be considered as given in our image applications, where orientations and scale may vary substantially, and are often unknown. Accordingly, we have developed the method of varying baselines to identify similarities in direction and distance relations. Our method allows us to evaluate directional similarities without a priori knowledge of cardinal directions, …

Progressive Transmission Of Spatial Data Over The Www: Challenges, James Carswell Sep 2001

Progressive Transmission Of Spatial Data Over The Www: Challenges, James Carswell

Conference papers

Progressive transmission of raster images over the WWW has been successfully applied to provide users with coarser versions of the data before downloading a complete image. In the vector domain, progressive transmission remains a challenging topic. Increasing the level of detail of a vector dataset is a complex process that does not simply imply adding pixels to it. In this paper we present a survey of existing models for progressive transmission of spatial data and discuss open problems and challenges related to the progressive transmission of geographic maps in vector format. Finally, we propose a model based on a client-server …

A Scene Similarity Metric For Matching Configurations Of Image Objects, James Carswell Jan 2000

A Scene Similarity Metric For Matching Configurations Of Image Objects, James Carswell

Articles

This paper proposes a novel solution to querying image databases by matching raster features to imagery completely in the raster/spatial domain using the shape of single features together with their spatial relations as the matching primitives. The core feature-based matching module combines a revised least-squares matching algorithm, to accomplish the matching process on binary images, with a unique implementation of a feature library that organizes and links query objects with their images in the database, thus enabling fast and efficient real-time retrieval of relevant imagery. The purpose is to extend this previous work of ours, which matches on the shape …

Electroanalysis Using Differential Pulse Methods And Stripping Techniques., Enda Howard Jan 2000

Electroanalysis Using Differential Pulse Methods And Stripping Techniques., Enda Howard

Masters

Application of a differential pulse waveform to a microelectrode or a rotating disk electrode results in a peaked response for amperometric redox reactions. Based on these observations models were proposed and tested for these methods. Simulations of the models were carried out by inputting the relevant equations into Microsoft Excel. The microelectrode study revealed a good correlation between one model and the numerical derivative of the current following a linear sweep potential waveform. Experimentally the derivative can be obtained numerically following a linear sweep. The alternative differential pulse waveform requires more sophisticated equipment and the response can be affected by …

This was done by the creation of a web site containing two Virtual Reality models of tourist interest. These were then valuated using a number of techniques both online and offline. This paper describes the methods used to create and evaluate these models as well as giving a overview of some of the results obtained.

A Feature Library Approach To On-Line Image Querying And Retrieval For Topographic Applications, James Carswell Jan 1999

A Feature Library Approach To On-Line Image Querying And Retrieval For Topographic Applications, James Carswell

Conference papers

In this paper we address the problem of content-based image retrieval using queries on shape and topology. We focus on the particularities of image databases encountered in typical topographic applications, and present the development of a spatial data management system that enables such queries. The query uses as input user-provided sketches of the shape and spatial configuration of the object (or objects) which should appear in the images to be retrieved. The objective of the search is to retrieve images that contain a configuration of objects sufficiently similar to the one specified in the query. Our novel approach introduces the …
