Performance Improvement Of The Shunt Active Power Filter Using A Novel Adaptivefiltering Approach, Abderrezzaq Zoghbi, Daoud Berkani
Performance Improvement Of The Shunt Active Power Filter Using A Novel Adaptivefiltering Approach, Abderrezzaq Zoghbi, Daoud Berkani
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper introduces an efficient control approach to enhance harmonics mitigation performance of the shunt active power filter (SAPF). This approach is based on adaptive filters favored by their built-in automatic parameters adaptation capability. The proposed filter, which uses a variable leaky least mean square (VLLMS) adaptation, is applied with a modified instantaneous power PQ theory. This enhances its dynamic performance over the use of conventional time-invariant filters, and overcomes its limitations in the presence of nonsinusoidal voltage conditions. The studied SAPF model is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK with combinations of nonlinear and unbalanced loads. Simulation results indicate a significant improvement …

Robust Model Reference Adaptive Pi Controller Based Sliding Mode Control Forthree-Phase Grid Connected Photovoltaic Inverter, Mojtaba Moeti, Mehdi Asadi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, the design of a new robust model reference adaptive PI (MRAC-PI) current controller is proposed for a two-stage grid connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter. Perturb & observe (P&O) algorithm is implemented in the boost part in order to extract the maximum power from the PV array. Firstly, the current dynamics with considering the system uncertainties are written in dq frame and are simplified by employing a decoupling system. Then, the MRAC-PI controller is designed based on a sliding mode control (SMC) to improve the robustness of the controller under system uncertainties. The parameters of PI controller are tuned …

A Counter Based Approach For Reducer Placement With Augmented Hadoop Rackawareness, Mir Wajahat Hussain, K Hemant Reddy, Diptendu Sinha Roy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
As the data-driven paradigm for intelligent systems design is gaining prominence, performance requirements have become very stringent, leading to numerous fine-tuned versions of Hadoop and its MapReduce programming model. However, very few researchers have investigated the effect of intelligent reducer placement on Hadoop's performance. This paper delves into this much ignored reducer placement phase for improving Hadoop's performance and proposes to spawn reduce phase of Hadoop tasks in an asynchronous fashion across nodes in a Hadoop cluster. The main contributions of this paper are: (i) to track when map phase of tasks are completed, (ii) to count the number of …

A Two-Stage Hair Region Localization Method For Guided Laser Hair Removal, Murat Avşar, İmam Şami̇l Yeti̇k
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Removal of hair using laser is a widely used method, where our goal is to permanently remove hair by using laser to cause heat in order to thermally damage the hair follicle. However, currently available laser hair removal systems affect the outer skin layers besides hair follicles. This is a disadvantage of classical methods with major health risks. We propose a method to overcome these health risks by guiding the laser beam only to automatically localized hair regions. This study aims to develop an automated feature-based hair region localization method as an integral part of the proposed hair removal system …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Lung cancer is one of the deadly cancer types, and almost 85 % of lung cancers are nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In the present study we investigated classification and feature selection methods for the differentiation of two subtypes of NSCLC, namely adenocarcinoma (ADC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC). The major advances in understanding the effects of therapy agents suggest that future targeted therapies will be increasingly subtype specific. We obtained positron emission tomography (PET) images of 93 patients with NSCLC, 39 of which had ADC while the rest had SqCC. Random walk segmentation was applied to delineate three-dimensional tumor …

On The Automorphisms And Isomorphisms Of Mds Matrices And Their Efficient Implementations, Muharrem Tolga Sakalli, Sedat Akleylek, Kemal Akkanat, Vincent Rijmen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we explicitly define the automorphisms of MDS matrices over the same binary extension field. By extending this idea, we present the isomorphisms between MDS matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$ and MDS matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{mt}}$, where $t \ge 1$ and $m>1$, which preserves the software implementation properties in view of XOR operations and table lookups of any given MDS matrix over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$. Then we propose a novel method to obtain distinct functions related to these automorphisms and isomorphisms to be used in generating isomorphic MDS matrices (new MDS matrices in view of implementation properties) using the existing ones. The …

A High-Level And Adaptive Metaheuristic Selection Algorithm For Solving Highdimensional Bound-Constrained Continuous Optimization Problems, Osman Gökalp, Aybars Uğur
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Metaheuristic algorithms are used to find sufficiently good solutions for the optimization problems that are not solvable in a polynomial time. Although metaheuristics offer a general problem-solving framework and can be applied to various types of optimization problems, their performances depend heavily on the problem to be solved. Thus, hybrid metaheuristics are used to combine strong parts of different algorithms. In this study, a novel adaptive metaheuristic selection algorithm is proposed for solving bound-constrained continuous optimization problems. The developed method hybridizes artificial bee colony, differential evolution, and particle swarm optimization at a high level where each algorithm works independently from …

A Spreadsheet-Based Decision Support System For Examination Timetabling, Mehmet Güray Güler, Ebru Geçi̇ci̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Examination timetabling is an inevitable problem of educational institutions. Each institution has its own particular limitations; however, the main structure is the same: assigning exams to time slots and classrooms. Several institutions solve the problem manually, but it becomes more difficult every year with increasing numbers of students and limited resources. There are many studies in the literature addressing the examination timetabling problem (ETP) and providing high quality solutions within reasonable amounts of time. Nevertheless, almost none of them can be used in practice since they are not converted into a decision support system (DSS). Commercial DSSs, on the other …

Wideband Patch Array Antenna Using Superstrate Configuration For Future 5gapplications, Sidra Farhat, Farzana Arshad, Yasar Amin, Jonathan Loo
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this work, four distinct antenna configurations for future-centric 5G applications are proposed. Initially, a single rectangular patch is designed to operate at the frequency of 28 GHz while maintaining a wide operational band. Performance of the antenna is improved by incorporating an array of identical rectangular elements resulting in a higher gain and wider bandwidth. The proposed arrangement consists of three rectangular elements realized using 0.508-mm thick Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 laminate. The bandwidth is further enhanced by increasing the number of radiating elements in the array from three to five. Evolution of the proposed design is concluded by stacking …

Asymmetric Slope Compensation For Digital Hybrid Current Mode Control Of Athree-Level Flying Capacitor Buck Converter, Abdulkeri̇m Uğur, Murat Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The three-level flying capacitor (3LFC) buck converter has the potential to provide better efficiency and higher power density as compared to the traditional buck converter. However, due to the flying capacitor?s instability issues, control is challenging. In this paper, the digital hybrid current mode (DHCM) control method, which combines the average and peak current mode control techniques, is modified and implemented to a 3LFC buck converter. For flying capacitor (FC) voltage balancing, a novel asymmetric slope compensation (ASC) technique is presented. The proposed ASC technique achieves FC voltage balancing by adjusting the slope compensation of the two switching pairs asymmetrically, …

Revised Polyhedral Conic Functions Algorithm For Supervised Classification, Gürhan Ceylan, Gürkan Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In supervised classification, obtaining nonlinear separating functions from an algorithm is crucial for prediction accuracy. This paper analyzes the polyhedral conic functions (PCF) algorithm that generates nonlinear separating functions by only solving simple subproblems. Then, a revised version of the algorithm is developed that achieves better generalization and fast training while maintaining the simplicity and high prediction accuracy of the original PCF algorithm. This is accomplished by making the following modifications to the subproblem: extension of the objective function with a regularization term, relaxation of a hard constraint set and introduction of a new error term. Experimental results show that …

An Improved Memetic Genetic Algorithm Based On A Complex Network As Asolution To The Traveling Salesman Problem, Hadi Mohammadi, Kamal Mirzaie, Mohammad Reza Mollakhalili Meybodi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A genetic algorithm (GA) is not a good option for finding solutions around in neighborhoods. The current study applies a memetic algorithm (MA) with a proposed local search to the mutation operator of a genetic algorithm in order to solve the traveling salesman problem (TSP). The proposed memetic algorithm uses swap, reversion and insertion operations to make changes in the solution. In the basic GA, unlike in the real world, the relationship between generations has not been considered. This gap is resolved using the proposed complex network to allow selection among possible solutions. The degree measure has been used for …

Cooperative Communications With Optimal Harvesting Duration For Nakagamifading Channels, Nadhir Ben Halima, Boujemaa Hatem
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we analyze the throughput of cooperative communications with wireless energy harvesting. Relay nodes harvest energy from Radio Frequency (RF) signal transmitted by the source. We derive the packet error probability as well as the throughput for Nakagami fading channels. We also suggest to enhance the throughput by choosing the value of harvesting duration. Our results are valid for both Amplify and Forward (AF) and Decode and Forward (DF) relaying.

Optimized Idling Grid-Connection Strategy For Synchronous Condenser, Jianxiang Shi, Heqing Huang, Teng Liu, Wei Mu, Jianfeng Zhao
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The rise of large-scale HVDC transmission technology has introduced new requirements for dynamic reactive power compensation in power systems. The new generation of synchronous condensers is independent of grid voltage and does not need to be dragged by a coaxial prime mover, which can improve the dynamic reactive power compensation of the power grid. This new generation of synchronous condensers is dragged by the static frequency converter to a 105% rated speed, after which the static frequency converter logs out. In the process of idling, the excitation mode switching is completed and the unit is connected to the grid simultaneously. …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Wireless communication standards keep evolving so that the requirement for high data rate operation can be fulfilled. This leads to the efforts in designing high linearity and low power consumption radio frequency power amplifier (RFPA) to support high data rate signal transmission and preserving battery life. The percentage of the DC power of the transceiver utilized by the power amplifier (PA) depends on the efficiency of the PA, user data rate, propagation conditions, signal modulations, and communication protocols. For example, the PA of a WLAN transceiver consumes 49 % of the overall efficiency from the transmitter. Hence, operating the PA …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Cluster analysis is widely used in data analysis. Statistical data analysis is generally performed on the linear data. If the data has directional structure, classical statistical methods cannot be applied directly to it. This study aims to improve a new directional clustering algorithm which is based on trigonometric approximation. The trigonometric approximation is used for both descriptive statistics and clustering of directional data. In this paper, the fuzzy clustering algorithms (FCD and FCM4DD) improved for directional data and the proposed method are carried out on some numerical and real data examples, and the simulation results are presented. Consequently, these results …

Automatic Characterization Of Copy Number Polymorphism Using High Throughput Sequencing, Can Alkan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Genome structural variation, broadly defined as alterations longer than 50 bp, are important sources for genetic variation among humans, including those that cause complex diseases such as autism, developmental delay, and schizophrenia. Although there has been considerable progress in characterizing structural variation since the beginnings of the 1000 Genomes Project, one form of structural variation called segmental duplications (SDs) remained largely understudied in large cohorts. This is mostly because SDs cannot be accurately discovered using the alignment files generated with standard read mapping tools. Instead, they can only be found when multiple map locations are considered. There is still a …
Controlling Waveguide Modes Using $\Mathcal{Pt}$ Transformation Media, Hayretti̇n Odabaşi
Controlling Waveguide Modes Using $\Mathcal{Pt}$ Transformation Media, Hayretti̇n Odabaşi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We study rectangular waveguide modes loaded with parity-time $\left(\mathcal{PT}\right)$ transformation media derived by complex transformation optics (CTO) approach. $\mathcal{PT}$ transformation media are obtained through mirror symmetric complex coordinate transformations resulting in a balanced loss/gain media. It is shown that waveguide modes can be controlled by simply changing the imaginary part of the complex coordinate transformation while not affecting any other characteristic of the waveguide. The field distribution inside the waveguide can either be stretched towards the sides or squeezed at the center of the waveguide by employing different loading configurations. \keywords{Complex transformation optics, waveguides, $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry}

Performance Improvement Of Induction Motor Drives With Model-Based Predictive Torque Control, Fati̇h Korkmaz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
One of the most important advantages of using modeling and simulation software in design and control engineering is the ability to predict system behavior within specified conditions. This paper presents a novel error vector-based control algorithm that aims to reduce torque ripples predicting flux and torque errors in a conventional vector-controlled induction motor. For this purpose, a new control model has been developed that envisages flux change by applying probabilistic space vectors' torque and flux control. In the proposed predictive control algorithm, flux and torque errors are calculated for each candidate voltage vector. Thus, the optimal output voltage vector that …

The use of renewable energy sources in the production of electricity has become inevitable in order to reduce the greenhouse gases left in the atmosphere that cause the Earth to warm up. Although countries on a national basis have implemented a number of policies to support electricity generated from renewable energy sources, investments to produce electricity without a license on a local basis are not desirable. Those who want to invest medium and small scale for the most reason expect that this work will be supported by real data. Although the electricity generated by renewable investments is generated by simulation …
