Are Male And Female Avatars Perceived Equally In 3-D Virtual Worlds?, David Dewester, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Sarah Gervais, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds in which users take the form of avatars and use those avatars to interact with objects and other avatars in the virtual world. Virtual worlds are growing in importance in both educational institutions and businesses. Educational institutions have adopted virtual worlds as a medium for instructional delivery whereas businesses are using virtual worlds for recruitment, training, collaboration, and marketing. Given these emerging phenomena, a better understanding of behavioral and perceptual issues in virtual worlds is warranted. We propose a research model to study the interaction effects of gender stereotypicality of male and female avatars …

3-D Virtual Worlds And Higher Education, X. Chen, Keng Siau, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conducting education in three-dimensional (3-D) virtual worlds is an emerging phenomenon in the educational arena. The objective of this research is to investigate the factors influencing students’ intention to adopt the 3-D virtual worlds for delivery of education. Drawing on existing technology acceptance models as well as studies in traditional and distance education, we developed a model to study students’ acceptance of using a 3-D virtual world for education and propose to test the model empirically using survey data collected from college students. We also study the use of two instructional methods in the 3-D virtual world. This study contributes …

Measuring Method Complexity: Uml Versus Bpmn, Jan Recker, Michael Zur Muehlen, Keng Siau, John Erickson, Marta Indulska

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graphical models are used to depict relevant aspects of real-world domains intended to be supported by an information system. Various approaches for modeling exist and approaches such as object-oriented and process-oriented modeling methods are in widespread use. These modeling methods differ in their expressive power as well as in their complexity of use, thereby leading to an important investment decision for organizations seeking to conduct modeling projects. In this paper, we used an established approach for evaluating the complexity of conceptual modeling methods and compared two important industry standards for modeling, Unified Modeling Language and Business Process Modeling Notation, based …

A Distributed Spatial Index For Error-Prone Wireless Data Broadcast, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Ken C. K. Lee, Dik Lun Lee, Min Shao Aug 2009

A Distributed Spatial Index For Error-Prone Wireless Data Broadcast, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Ken C. K. Lee, Dik Lun Lee, Min Shao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information is valuable to users when it is available not only at the right time but also at the right place. To support efficient location-based data access in wireless data broadcast systems, a distributed spatial index (called DSI) is presented in this paper. DSI is highly efficient because it has a linear yet fully distributed structure that naturally shares links in different search paths. DSI is very resilient to the error-prone wireless communication environment because interrupted search operations based on DSI can be resumed easily. It supports search algorithms for classical location-based queries such as window queries and kNN queries …

Evaluating Straddle Carrier Deployment Policies: A Simulation Study For The Piraeus Container Terminal, Eleni Hadjiconstantinou, Nang Laik Ma Aug 2009

Evaluating Straddle Carrier Deployment Policies: A Simulation Study For The Piraeus Container Terminal, Eleni Hadjiconstantinou, Nang Laik Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most container terminals in the world today are operating up to their capacities. In this paper, we have developed a decision support system to optimise yard operations by considering all container flows (import, export and transshipment) through the yard with the view to improving the terminal performance and efficiency. In another paper, we proposed an optimisation model that determines optimal container locations and straddle carrier (SC) movements with the objective of minimising the overall storage and handling cost of containers. In this paper, a discrete event simulation tool for container terminal operations has been developed with three objectives: (i) to …

On Efficient Mutual Nearest Neighbor Query Processing In Spatial Databases, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Gencai Chen, Qing Li Aug 2009

On Efficient Mutual Nearest Neighbor Query Processing In Spatial Databases, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Gencai Chen, Qing Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper studies a new form of nearest neighbor queries in spatial databases, namely, mutual nearest neighbour (MNN) search. Given a set D of objects and a query object q, an MNN query returns from D, the set of objects that are among the k1 (≥ 1) nearest neighbors (NNs) of q; meanwhile, have q as one of their k2(≥ 1) NNs. Although MNN queries are useful in many applications involving decision making, data mining, and pattern recognition, it cannot be efficiently handled by existing spatial query processing approaches. In this paper, we present …

Optimal-Location-Selection Query Processing In Spatial Databases, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Gencai Chen, Qing Li Aug 2009

Optimal-Location-Selection Query Processing In Spatial Databases, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Gencai Chen, Qing Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces and solves a novel type of spatial queries, namely, Optimal-Location-Selection (OLS) search, which has many applications in real life. Given a data object set D_A, a target object set D_B, a spatial region R, and a critical distance d_c in a multidimensional space, an OLS query retrieves those target objects in D_B that are outside R but have maximal optimality. Here, the optimality of a target object b \in D_B located outside R is defined as the number of the data objects from D_A that are inside R and meanwhile have their distances to b not exceeding …

A Fair Assignment Algorithm For Multiple Preference Queries, Leong Hou U, Nikos Mamoulis, Kyriakos Mouratidis Aug 2009

A Fair Assignment Algorithm For Multiple Preference Queries, Leong Hou U, Nikos Mamoulis, Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Consider an internship assignment system, where at the end of each academic year, interested university students search and apply for available positions, based on their preferences (e.g., nature of the job, salary, office location, etc). In a variety of facility, task or position assignment contexts, users have personal preferences expressed by different weights on the attributes of the searched objects. Although individual preference queries can be evaluated by selecting the object in the database with the highest aggregate score, in the case of multiple simultaneous requests, a single object cannot be assigned to more than one users. The challenge is …

Scalable Verification For Outsourced Dynamic Databases, Hwee Hwa Pang, Jilian Zhang, Kyriakos Mouratidis Aug 2009

Scalable Verification For Outsourced Dynamic Databases, Hwee Hwa Pang, Jilian Zhang, Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Query answers from servers operated by third parties need to be verified, as the third parties may not be trusted or their servers may be compromised. Most of the existing authentication methods construct validity proofs based on the Merkle hash tree (MHT). The MHT, however, imposes severe concurrency constraints that slow down data updates. We introduce a protocol, built upon signature aggregation, for checking the authenticity, completeness and freshness of query answers. The protocol offers the important property of allowing new data to be disseminated immediately, while ensuring that outdated values beyond a pre-set age can be detected. We also …

Formal Verification Of Scalable Nonzero Indicators, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Wei Chen, Yanhong A. Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Concurrent algorithms are notoriously difficult to design correctly, and high performance algorithms that make little or no use of locks even more so. In this paper, we describe a formal verification of a recent concurrent data structure Scalable NonZero Indicators. The algorithm supports incrementing, decrementing, and querying the shared counter in an efficient and linearizable way without blocking. The algorithm is highly non-trivial and it is challenging to prove the correctness. We have proved that the algorithm satisfies linearizability, by showing a trace refinement relation from the concrete implementation to its abstract specification. These models are specified in CSP and …

Spatial Cloaking Revisited: Distinguishing Information Leakage From Anonymity, Kar Way Tan, Yimin Lin, Kyriakos Mouratidis Jul 2009

Spatial Cloaking Revisited: Distinguishing Information Leakage From Anonymity, Kar Way Tan, Yimin Lin, Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Location-based services (LBS) are receiving increasing popularity as they provide convenience to mobile users with on-demand information. The use of these services, however, poses privacy issues as the user locations and queries are exposed to untrusted LBSs. Spatial cloaking techniques provide privacy in the form of k-anonymity; i.e., they guarantee that the (location of the) querying user u is indistinguishable from at least k-1 others, where k is a parameter specified by u at query time. To achieve this, they form a group of k users, including u, and forward their minimum bounding rectangle (termed anonymzing spatial region, ASR) to …

Verification Of Population Ring Protocols In Pat, Yang Liu, Jun Pang, Jun Sun, Jianhua Zhao Jul 2009

Verification Of Population Ring Protocols In Pat, Yang Liu, Jun Pang, Jun Sun, Jianhua Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The population protocol model has emerged as an elegant paradigm for describing mobile ad hoc networks, consisting of a number of nodes that interact with each other to carry out a computation. One essential property of self-stabilizing population protocols is that all nodes must eventually converge to the correct output value, with respect to all possible initial configurations. It has been shown that fairness constraints play a crucial role in designing population protocols. The Process Analysis Toolkit (PAT) has been developed to perform verifications under different fairness constraints efficiently. In particular, it can handle global fairness, which is required for …

Compositemap: A Novel Framework For Music Similarity Measure, Bingjun Zhang, Jialie Shen, Qiaoliang Xiang, Ye Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the continuing advances in data storage and communication technology, there has been an explosive growth of music information from different application domains. As an effective technique for organizing, browsing, and searching large data collections, music information retrieval is attracting more and more attention. How to measure and model the similarity between different music items is one of the most fundamental yet challenging research problems. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework based on a multimodal and adaptive similarity measure for various applications. Distinguished from previous approaches, our system can effectively combine music properties from different aspects into a …

Large-Scale Near-Duplicate Web Video Search: Challenge And Opportunity, Wan-Lei Zhao, Song Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo Jul 2009

Large-Scale Near-Duplicate Web Video Search: Challenge And Opportunity, Wan-Lei Zhao, Song Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The massive amount of near-duplicate and duplicate web videos has presented both challenge and opportunity to multimedia computing. On one hand, browsing videos on Internet becomes highly inefficient for the need to repeatedly fast-forward videos of similar content. On the other hand, the tremendous amount of somewhat duplicate content also makes some traditionally difficult vision tasks become simple and easy. For example, annotating pictures can be as simple as recycling the tags of Internet images retrieved from image search engines. Such tasks, of either to eliminate or to recycle near-duplicates, can usually be achieved by the nearest neighbor search of …

Identifying Bug Signatures Using Discriminative Graph Mining, Hong Cheng, David Lo, Yang Zhou, Xiaoyin Wang, Xifeng Yan Jul 2009

Identifying Bug Signatures Using Discriminative Graph Mining, Hong Cheng, David Lo, Yang Zhou, Xiaoyin Wang, Xifeng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bug localization has attracted a lot of attention recently. Most existing methods focus on pinpointing a single statement or function call which is very likely to contain bugs. Although such methods could be very accurate, it is usually very hard for developers to understand the context of the bug, given each bug location in isolation. In this study, we propose to model software executions with graphs at two levels of granularity: methods and basic blocks. An individual node represents a method or basic block and an edge represents a method call, method return or transition (at the method or basic …

Conditional Proxy Broadcast Re-Encryption, Cheng-Kang Chu, Jian Weng, Sherman S. W. Chow, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng Jul 2009

Conditional Proxy Broadcast Re-Encryption, Cheng-Kang Chu, Jian Weng, Sherman S. W. Chow, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A proxy re-encryption (PRE) scheme supports the delegation of decryption rights via a proxy, who makes the ciphertexts decryptable by the delegatee. PRE is useful in various applications such as encrypted email forwarding. In this paper, we introduce a more generalized notion of conditional proxy broadcast re-encryption (CPBRE). A CPBRE scheme allows Alice to generate a re-encryption key for some condition specified during the encryption, such that the re-encryption power of the proxy is restricted to that condition only. This enables a more fine-grained delegation of decryption right. Moreover, Alice can delegate decryption rights to a set of users at …

On The Effectiveness Of Software Diversity: A Systematic Study On Real-World Vulnerabilities, Jin Han, Debin Gao, Robert H. Deng Jul 2009

On The Effectiveness Of Software Diversity: A Systematic Study On Real-World Vulnerabilities, Jin Han, Debin Gao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many systems have been introduced to detect software intrusions by comparing the outputs and behavior of diverse replicas when they are processing the same, potentially malicious, input. When these replicas are constructed using off-the-shelf software products, it is assumed that they are diverse and not compromised simultaneously under the same attack. In this paper, we analyze vulnerabilities published in 2007 to evaluate the extent to which this assumption is valid. We focus on vulnerabilities in application software, and show that the majority of these software products --- including those providing the same service (and therefore multiple software substitutes can be …

Towards Expressive Specification And Efficient Model Checking, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun Jul 2009

Towards Expressive Specification And Efficient Model Checking, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

System modeling is important and highly non-trivial. The choice of specification language is an important factor in the success of the entire development. The language should cover several facets of the requirements and the model should precisely capture (up to abstraction of irrelevant details) an existing system or a system to be built. The language should have a semantic model suitable to study the behaviors of the system and to establish the validity of desired properties. A formal model can be the basis for a variety of system development activities, e.g., system simulation, visualization, verification or prototype synthesis.

Exploring Inter-Concept Relationship With Context Space For Semantic Video Indexing, Xiao-Yong Wei, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo Jul 2009

Exploring Inter-Concept Relationship With Context Space For Semantic Video Indexing, Xiao-Yong Wei, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semantic concept detectors are often individually and independently developed. Using peripherally related concepts for leveraging the power of joint detection, which is referred to as context-based concept fusion (CBCF), has been one of the focus studies in recent years. This paper proposes the construction of a context space and the exploration of the space for CBCF. Context space considers the global consistency of concept relationship, addresses the problem of missing annotation, and is extensible for cross-domain contextual fusion. The space is linear and can be built by modeling the inter-concept relationship through annotation provided by either manual labeling or machine …

Bonus Plans Of Mice And Men, M. Thulasidas Jul 2009

Bonus Plans Of Mice And Men, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Our best-laid plans often go awry. We see it all the time at a personal level -- accidents (both good and bad), deaths (both of loved ones and rich uncles), births, and lotteries all conspire to reshuffle our priorities and render our plans null and void. In fact, there is nothing like a solid misfortune to get us to put things in perspective. This opportunity may be the proverbial silver lining we are constantly advised to see. What is true at a personal level holds true also at a larger scale. The industry-wide financial meltdown has imparted a philosophical clarity …

The Wisdom Of The Few: A Collaborative Filtering Approach Based On Expert Opinions From The Web, Xavier Amatriain, Neal Lathia, Josep M. Pujol, Haewoon Kwak, Nuria. Oliver Jul 2009

The Wisdom Of The Few: A Collaborative Filtering Approach Based On Expert Opinions From The Web, Xavier Amatriain, Neal Lathia, Josep M. Pujol, Haewoon Kwak, Nuria. Oliver

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nearest-neighbor collaborative filtering provides a successful means of generating recommendations for web users. However, this approach suffers from several shortcomings, including data sparsity and noise, the cold-start problem, and scalability. In this work, we present a novel method for recommending items to users based on expert opinions. Our method is a variation of traditional collaborative filtering: rather than applying a nearest neighbor algorithm to the user-rating data, predictions are computed using a set of expert neighbors from an independent dataset, whose opinions are weighted according to their similarity to the user. This method promises to address some of the weaknesses …

A Bayesian Approach Integrating Regional And Global Features For Image Semantic Learning, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ying Liu, Ah-Hwee Tan, Liang-Tien Chia, Joo-Hwee Lim Jul 2009

A Bayesian Approach Integrating Regional And Global Features For Image Semantic Learning, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ying Liu, Ah-Hwee Tan, Liang-Tien Chia, Joo-Hwee Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In content-based image retrieval, the “semantic gap” between visual image features and user semantics makes it hard to predict abstract image categories from low-level features. We present a hybrid system that integrates global features (Gfeatures) and region features (R-features) for predicting image semantics. As an intermediary between image features and categories, we introduce the notion of mid-level concepts, which enables us to predict an image’s category in three steps. First, a G-prediction system uses G-features to predict the probability of each category for an image. Simultaneously, a R-prediction system analyzes R-features to identify the probabilities of mid-level concepts in that …

Poster Abstract: Beamcast: Harnessing Beamforming Capabilities For Link Layer Multicast, Souvik Sen, Rahul Ghosh, Jie Xiong, Romit Roy Choudhury Jul 2009

Poster Abstract: Beamcast: Harnessing Beamforming Capabilities For Link Layer Multicast, Souvik Sen, Rahul Ghosh, Jie Xiong, Romit Roy Choudhury

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wireless multicast is an important service primitive for emerging applications such as live video, streaming audio and content telecasts. Transmission rate in such a link layer multicast is bottlenecked by the rate of the weakest client, leading to channel under-utilization. Attempts to increase the data rate results in lower reliability (due to higher bit error rate) and higher unfairness. This poster utilizes smart beamforming antennas to improve multicast performance in wireless LANs. The main idea is to satisfy majority of the (strong) clients with a high-rate omnidirectional transmission, followed by high-rate directional transmission(s) to cover the weaker ones. By selecting …

Ktr: An Efficient Key Management Scheme For Secure Data Access Control In Wireless Broadcast Services Recovery, Qijun Gu, Peng Liu, Wang-Chien Lee, Chao-Hsien Chu Jul 2009

Ktr: An Efficient Key Management Scheme For Secure Data Access Control In Wireless Broadcast Services Recovery, Qijun Gu, Peng Liu, Wang-Chien Lee, Chao-Hsien Chu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wireless broadcast is an effective approach for disseminating data to a number of users. To provide secure access to data in wireless broadcast services, symmetric-key-based encryption is used to ensure that only users who own the valid keys can decrypt the data. With regard to various subscriptions, an efficient key management for distributing and changing keys is in great demand for access control in broadcast services. In this paper, we propose an efficient key management scheme, namely, key tree reuse (KTR), to handle key distribution with regard to complex subscription options and user activities. KTR has the following advantages. First, …

Integrating Specification And Programs For System Modeling And Verification, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Chunqing Chen Jul 2009

Integrating Specification And Programs For System Modeling And Verification, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Chunqing Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High level specification languages like CSP use mathematical objects as abstractions to represent systems and processes. System behaviors are described as process expressions combined with compositional operators, which are associated with elegant algebraic laws for system analysis. Nonetheless, modeling systems with non-trivial data and functional aspects using CSP remains difficult. In this work, we propose a modeling language named CSP# (short for communicating sequential programs) which integrates high-level modeling operators with low-level procedural codes, for the purpose of efficient mechanical system verification. We demonstrate that data operations can be modeled as terminating sequential programs, which can be composed using high-level …

Learning And Inferencing In User Ontology For Personalized Semantic Web Search, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan Jul 2009

Learning And Inferencing In User Ontology For Personalized Semantic Web Search, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User modeling is aimed at capturing the users’ interests in a working domain, which forms the basis of providing personalized information services. In this paper, we present an ontology based user model, called user ontology, for providing personalized information service in the Semantic Web. Different from the existing approaches that only use concepts and taxonomic relations for user modeling, the proposed user ontology model utilizes concepts, taxonomic relations, and non-taxonomic relations in a given domain ontology to capture the users’ interests. As a customized view of the domain ontology, a user ontology provides a richer and more precise representation of …

Active Learning For Causal Bayesian Network Structure With Non-Symmetrical Entropy, Li G., Tze-Yun Leong Jul 2009

Active Learning For Causal Bayesian Network Structure With Non-Symmetrical Entropy, Li G., Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Causal knowledge is crucial for facilitating comprehension, diagnosis, prediction, and control in automated reasoning. Active learning in causal Bayesian networks involves interventions by manipulating specific variables, and observing the patterns of change over other variables to derive causal knowledge. In this paper, we propose a new active learning approach that supports interventions with node selection. Our method admits a node selection criterion based on non-symmetrical entropy from the current data and a stop criterion based on structure entropy of the resulting networks. We examine the technical challenges and practical issues involved. Experimental results on a set of benchmark Bayesian networks …

Continuous Obstructed Nearest Neighbor Queries In Spatial Databases, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng Jul 2009

Continuous Obstructed Nearest Neighbor Queries In Spatial Databases, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study a novel form of continuous nearest neighbor queries in the presence of obstacles, namely continuous obstructed nearest neighbor (CONN) search. It considers the impact of obstacles on the distance between objects, which is ignored by most of spatial queries. Given a data set P, an obstacle set O, and a query line segment q in a two-dimensional space, a CONN query retrieves the nearest neighbor of each point on q according to the obstructed distance, i.e., the shortest path between them without crossing any obstacle. We formulate CONN search, analyze its unique properties, and develop …

Automatic Steering Of Behavioral Model Inference, David Lo, Leonardo Mariani, Mauro Pezze Jul 2009

Automatic Steering Of Behavioral Model Inference, David Lo, Leonardo Mariani, Mauro Pezze

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many testing and analysis techniques use finite state models to validate and verify the quality of software systems. Since the specification of such models is complex and time-consuming, researchers defined several techniques to extract finite state models from code and traces. Automatically generating models requires much less effort than designing them, and thus eases the verification and validation of large software systems. However, when models are inferred automatically, the precision of the mining process is critical. Behavioral models mined with imprecise processes can include many spurious behaviors, and can thus compromise the results of testing and analysis techniques that use …

Creating Human-Like Autonomous Players In Real-Time First Person Shooter Computer Games, Di Wang, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan, Gee-Wah Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper illustrates how we create a software agent by employing FALCON, a self-organizing neural network that performs reinforcement learning, to play a well-known first person shooter computer game known as Unreal Tournament 2004. Through interacting with the game environment and its opponents, our agent learns in real-time without any human intervention. Our agent bot participated in the 2K Bot Prize competition, similar to the Turing test for intelligent agents, wherein human judges were tasked to identify whether their opponents in the game were human players or virtual agents. To perform well in the competition, an agent must act like …
