There is a significant body of empirical work on statistical de-anonymization attacks against databases containing micro-dataabout individuals, e.g., their preferences, movie ratings, or transactiondata. Our goal is to analytically explain why such attacks work. Specifically, we analyze a variant of the Narayanan-Shmatikov algorithm thatwas used to effectively de-anonymize the Netflix database of movie ratings. We prove theorems characterizing mathematical properties of thedatabase and the auxiliary information available to the adversary thatenable two classes of privacy attacks. In the first attack, the adversarysuccessfully identifies the individual about whom she possesses auxiliaryinformation (an isolation attack). In the second attack, the adversarylearns additional …

Motivated Learning For The Development Of Autonomous Agents, Janusz A. Starzyk, James T. Graham, Pawel Raif, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A new machine learning approach known as motivated learning (ML) is presented in this work. Motivated learning drives a machine to develop abstract motivations and choose its own goals. ML also provides a self-organizing system that controls a machine’s behavior based on competition between dynamically-changing pain signals. This provides an interplay of externally driven and internally generated control signals. It is demonstrated that ML not only yields a more sophisticated learning mechanism and system of values than reinforcement learning (RL), but is also more efficient in learning complex relations and delivers better performance than RL in dynamically changing environments. In …

Electronic Product Code Discovery Service (EPCDS) is an important concept in supply chain processes and in Internet of Things (IOT). It allows supply chain participants to search for their partners, communicate with them and share product information using standardized interfaces securely. Many researchers have been proposing different EPCDS models, considering different requirements. In this paper, we describe existing architecture designs of EPCDS systems, namely Directory Service Model, Query Relay Model and Aggregating Discovery Service Model (ADS). We also briefly mention Secure Discovery Service (SecDS) Model, which is an improved version of Directory Service Model with a secure attribute-based access control …

Hasbe: A Hierarchical Attribute-Based Solution For Flexible And Scalable Access Control In Cloud Computing, Zhiguo Wan, Jun'e Liu, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cloud computing has emerged as one of the most influential paradigms in IT industry in recent years. Since this new computing technology requires users to entrust their valuable data to cloud providers, there have been increasing security and privacy concerns on outsourced data. Several schemes employing attribute-based encryption (ABE) have been proposed for access control of outsourced data in cloud computing; however, most of them suffer from inflexibility in implementing complex access control policies. In order to realize scalable, flexible, and fine-grained access control of outsourced data in cloud computing, in this paper we propose hierarchical attribute-set-based encryption (HASBE) by …

Mining Social Dependencies In Dynamic Interaction Networks, Freddy Chong-Tat Chua, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
User-to-user interactions have become ubiquitous in Web 2.0. Users exchange emails, post on newsgroups, tag web pages, co-author papers, etc. Through these interactions, users co-produce or co-adopt content items (e.g., words in emails, tags in social bookmarking sites). We model such dynamic interactions as a user interaction network, which relates users, interactions, and content items over time. After some interactions, a user may produce content that is more similar to those produced by other users previously. We term this effect social dependency, and we seek to mine from such networks the degree to which a user may be socially dependent …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Modern social networks often consist of multiple relationsamong individuals. Understanding the structureof such multi-relational network is essential. In sociology, one way of structural analysis is to identify differentpositions and roles using blockmodels. In thispaper, we generalize stochastic blockmodels to GeneralizedStochastic Blockmodels (GSBM) for performing positionaland role analysis on multi-relational networks. Our GSBM generalizes many different kinds of MultivariateProbability Distribution Function (MVPDF) tomodel different kinds of multi-relational networks. Inparticular, we propose to use multivariate Poisson distributionfor multi-relational social networks. Our experimentsshow that GSBM is able to identify the structuresfor both synthetic and real world network data. These structures can further be used for predicting …
Obfuscating The Topical Intention In Enterprise Text Search, Hwee Hwa Pang, Xiaokui Xiao, Jialie Shen
Obfuscating The Topical Intention In Enterprise Text Search, Hwee Hwa Pang, Xiaokui Xiao, Jialie Shen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The text search queries in an enterprise can reveal the users' topic of interest, and in turn confidential staff or business information. To safeguard the enterprise from consequences arising from a disclosure of the query traces, it is desirable to obfuscate the true user intention from the search engine, without requiring it to be re-engineered. In this paper, we advocate a unique approach to profile the topics that are relevant to the user intention. Based on this approach, we introduce an (ε 1, ε 2)-privacy model that allows a user to stipulate that topics relevant to her intention …

In this paper, we introduce Activity Travel Pattern (ATP) monitoring in a large-scale city environment. ATP represents where city residents and vehicles stay and how they travel around in a complex megacity. Monitoring ATP will incubate new types of value-added services such as predictive mobile advertisement, demand forecasting for urban stores, and adaptive transportation scheduling. To enable ATP monitoring, we develop ActraMon, a high-performance ATP monitoring framework. As a first step, ActraMon provides a simple but effective computational model of ATP and a declarative query language facilitating effective specification of various ATP monitoring queries. More important, ActraMon employs the shared …

Detecting Extreme Rank Anomalous Collections, Hanbo Dai, Feida Zhu, Ee-Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Anomaly or outlier detection has a wide range of applications, including fraud and spam detection. Most existing studies focus on detecting point anomalies, i.e., individual, isolated entities. However, there is an increasing number of applications in which anomalies do not occur individually, but in small collections. Unlike the majority, entities in an anomalous collection tend to share certain extreme behavioral traits. The knowledge essential in understanding why and how the set of entities becomes outliers would only be revealed by examining at the collection level. A good example is web spammers adopting common spamming techniques. To discover this kind of …

There is growing interest in reducing building energy consumption through increased sensor data and increased computational support for building controls. The goal of reduced building energy is often coupled with the desire for improved occupant comfort. Current building systems are inefficient in their energy usage for maintaining occupant comfort as they operate according to fixed schedules and maximum design occupancy assumptions, and they rely on code defined occupant comfort ranges. This paper presents and implements a multi-agent comfort and energy system (MACES) to model alternative management and control of building systems and occupants. MACES specifically improves upon previous multi-agent systems …

Boosting Web Video Categorization With Contextual Information From Social Web, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yi-Ming Zhu, Qiang Peng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Web video categorization is a fundamental task for web video search. In this paper, we explore web video categorization from a new perspective, by integrating the model-based and data-driven approaches to boost the performance. The boosting comes from two aspects: one is the performance improvement for text classifiers through query expansion from related videos and user videos. The model-based classifiers are built based on the text features extracted from title and tags. Related videos and user videos act as external resources for compensating the shortcoming of the limited and noisy text features. Query expansion is adopted to reinforce the classification …

Improved Duplicate Bug Report Identification, Yuan Tian, Chengnian Sun, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Bugs are prevalent in software systems. To improve the reliability of software systems, developers often allow end users to provide feedback on bugs that they encounter. Users could perform this by sending a bug report in a bug report management system like Bugzilla. This process however is uncoordinated and distributed, which means that many users could submit bug reports reporting the same problem. These are referred to as duplicate bug reports. The existence of many duplicate bug reports may cause much unnecessary manual efforts as often a triager would need to manually tag bug reports as being duplicates. Recently, there …

Scenario-Based And Value-Based Specification Mining: Better Together, David Lo, Shahar Maoz
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Specification mining takes execution traces as input and extracts likely program invariants, which can be used for comprehension, verification, and evolution related tasks. In this work we integrate scenario-based specification mining, which uses a data-mining algorithm to suggest ordering constraints in the form of live sequence charts, an inter-object, visual, modal, scenario-based specification language, with mining of value-based invariants, which detects likely invariants holding at specific program points. The key to the integration is a technique we call scenario-based slicing, running on top of the mining algorithms to distinguish the scenario-specific invariants from the general ones. The resulting suggested specifications …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cyberattacks are computer-to-computer attacks undermining the confidentiality, integrity, and/or availability of computers and/or the information they hold. The importance of securing cyberspace is increasing, along with the sophistication and potential significance of the results of the attacks. Moreover, attacksb involve increasingly sophisticated coordination among multiple hackers across international boundaries, where the aim has shifted from fun and self-satisfaction to financial or military gain, with clear and self-reinforcing motivation; for example, the number of new malicious code threats worldwide increased more than 71% from 2008 to 2009.

In this paper, we present a new way of generating behavioral (not biometric) fingerprints from the cellphone usage data. In particular, we explore if the generated behavioral fingerprints are memorable enough to be remembered by end users. We built a system, called HuMan, that generates fingerprints from cellphone data. To test HuMan, we conducted an extensive user study that involved collecting about one month of continuous usage data (including calls, SMSes, application usage patterns etc.) from 44 Symbian and Android smartphone users. We evaluated the memorable fingerprints generated from this rich multi-context data by asking each user to answer various …

Quality And Leniency In Online Collaborative Rating Systems, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The emerging trend of social information processing has resulted in Web users’ increased reliance on user-generated content contributed by others for information searching and decision making. Rating scores, a form of user-generated content contributed by reviewers in online rating systems, allow users to leverage others’ opinions in the evaluation of objects. In this article, we focus on the problem of summarizing the rating scores given to an object into an overall score that reflects the object’s quality. We observe that the existing approaches for summarizing scores largely ignores the effect of reviewers exercising different standards in assigning scores. Instead of …

Road: A New Spatial Object Search Framework For Road Networks, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Baihua Zheng, Yuan Tian
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we present a new system framework called ROAD for spatial object search on road networks. ROAD is extensible to diverse object types and efficient for processing various location-dependent spatial queries (LDSQs), as it maintains objects separately from a given network and adopts an effective search space pruning technique. Based on our analysis on the two essential operations for LDSQ processing, namely, network traversal and object lookup, ROAD organizes a large road network as a hierarchy of interconnected regional subnetworks (called Rnets). Each Rnet is augmented with 1) shortcuts and 2) object abstracts to accelerate network traversals and …

The success of many different kinds of e-business operations depends on data and information, and how they are used to optimize operations, drive sales and marketing, and grow the business. The ability to manage and safeguard data as a strategic asset, transform it into actionable information, and use it as a strategic differentiator is a key contributor to the success of any business operation. What makes this an even more interesting challenge is the speed at which data have been growing in recent years, due to social networking, the Internet, mobile telephony and all kinds of new technologies that create …

Hoare-Style Verification Of Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt, Detlef Plump
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
GP (for Graph Programs) is an experimental nondeterministic programming language for solving problems on graphs and graph-like structures. The language is based on graph transformation rules, allowing visual programming at a high level of abstraction. In particular, GP frees programmers from dealing with low-level data structures. In this paper, we present a Hoare-style proof system for verifying the partial correctness of (a subset of) graph programs. The pre- and postconditions of the calculus are nested graph conditions with expressions, a formalism for specifying both structural graph properties and properties of labels. We show that our proof system is sound with …

Smart grid provides the technology for modernizing electricity delivery systems by using distributed and computer-based remote sensing, control and automation, and two-way communications. Potential benefits of the technology are that the smart grid's central control will now be able to control and operate many remote power plant, optimize the overall asset utilization and operational efficiently. In this paper, we propose an innovative approach for the smart grid to handle uncertainties arising from condition monitoring and maintenance of power plant. The approach uses an adaptive maintenance advisor and a system-maintenance optimizer for designing/implementing optimized condition-based maintenance activities, and collectively handles operational …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This chapter focuses on the broad topic of human decision making. Decision making is often viewed as a stage of human information processing because people must gather, organize, and combine information from various sources to make decisions. However, as decisions grow more complex, information processing actually becomes part of decision making, and methods of decision sup-port that help decision makers process information become of growing importance. Decision making also overlaps with problem solving. The point where decision making becomes problem solving is fuzzy, but many decisions require problem solving, and the opposite is true as well. Cognitive models of problem …

This paper develops a utility-based optimization framework for resource sharing by multiple competing missions in a mission-oriented wireless sensor network (WSN) environment. Prior work on network utility maximization (NUM) based optimization has focused on unicast flows with sender-based utilities in either wireline or wireless networks. In this work, we develop a generalized NUM model to consider three key new features observed in mission-centric WSN environments: i) the definition of the utility of an individual mission (receiver) as a joint function of data from multiple sensor sources ii) the consumption of each senders (sensor) data by multiple missions and iii) the …

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IOT) has drawn considerable attention from the industrial and research communities. Due to the vast amount of data generated through IOT devices and users, there is an urgent need for an effective search engine to help us make sense of this massive amount of data. With this motivation, we begin our initial works on developing a secure and efficient search engine (SecDS) based on EPC Discovery Services (EPCDS) for EPCglobal network, an integral part of IOT. SecDS is designed to provide a bridge between different partners of supply chains to share information while …

The social network perspective has served as a useful framework for studying scientific research collaboration in different disciplines. Although collaboration in computer science research has received some attention, software engineering research collaboration has remained unexplored to a large extent. In this paper, we examine the collaboration networks based on co-authorship information of papers from ten software engineering publication venues over the 1976-2010 time period. We compare time variations of certain parameters of these networks with corresponding parameters of collaboration networks from other disciplines. We also explore whether software engineering collaboration networks manifest symptoms of the small-world phenomenon, conform to the …

Rushes footages are considered as cheap gold mine with the potential for reuse in broadcasting and filmmaking industries. However, mining "gold" from unedited videos such as rushes is challenging as the reusable segments are buried in a large set of redundant information. In this paper, we propose a unified framework for stock footage classification and summarization to support video editors in navigating and organizing rushes videos. Our approach is composed of two steps. First, we employ motion features to filter the undesired camera motion and locate the stock footage. A hierarchical hidden Markov model (HHMM) is proposed to model the …

Social media has changed how software developers collaborate, how they coordinate their work, and where they find information. Social media sites, such as the Question and Answer (Q&A) portal Stack Overflow, fill archives with millions of entries that contribute to what we know about software development, covering a wide range of topics. For today’s software developers, reusable code snippets, introductory usage examples, and pertinent libraries are often just a web search away. In this position paper, we discuss the opportunities and challenges for software developers that rely on web content curated by the crowd, and we envision the future of …

Towards Fine-Grained Radio-Based Indoor Location, Jie Xiong, Kyle Jamieson
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Location systems are key to a rich experience for mobile users. When they roam outdoors, mobiles can usually count on a clear GPS signal for an accurate location, but indoors, GPS usually fades, and so up until recently, mobiles have had to rely mainly on rather coarse-grained signal strength readings for location. What has changed this status quo is the recent trend of dramatically increasing numbers of antennas at the indoor AP, mainly to bolster capacity and coverage with multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. In the near future, the number of antennas at the access point will increase several-fold, to meet …
