Flip-Invariant Sift For Copy And Object Detection, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo Mar 2013

Flip-Invariant Sift For Copy And Object Detection, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) feature has been widely accepted as an effective local keypoint descriptor for its invariance to rotation, scale, and lighting changes in images. However, it is also well known that SIFT, which is derived from directionally sensitive gradient fields, is not flip invariant. In real-world applications, flip or flip-like transformations are commonly observed in images due to artificial flipping, opposite capturing viewpoint, or symmetric patterns of objects. This paper proposes a new descriptor, named flip-invariant SIFT (or F-SIFT), that preserves the original properties of SIFT while being tolerant to flips. F-SIFT starts by estimating the dominant curl …

Understanding Widespread Changes: A Taxonomic Study, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang Mar 2013

Understanding Widespread Changes: A Taxonomic Study, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many active research studies in software engineering, such as detection of recurring bug fixes, detection of copyand- paste bugs, and automated program transformation tools, are motivated by the assumption that many code changes (e.g., changing an identifier name) in software systems are widespread to many locations and are similar to one another. However, there is no study so far that actually analyzes widespread changes in software systems. Understanding the nature of widespread changes could empirically support the assumption, which provides insight to improve the research studies and related tools. Our study in this paper addresses such a need. We propose …

Adoption Of Software Testing In Open Source Projects: A Preliminary Study On 50,000 Projects, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, Tegawende F. Bissyande, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In software engineering, testing is a crucial activity that is designed to ensure the quality of program code. For this activity, development teams spend substantial resources constructing test cases to thoroughly assess the correctness of software functionality. What is however the proportion of open source projects that include test cases? What kind of projects are more likely to include test cases? In this study, we explore 50,000 projects and investigate the correlation between the presence of test cases and various project development characteristics, including the lines of code and the size of development teams.

An Empirical Study On Developer Interactions In Stackoverflow, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang Mar 2013

An Empirical Study On Developer Interactions In Stackoverflow, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

StackOverflow provides a popular platform where developers post and answer questions. Recently, Treude et al. manually label 385 questions in StackOverflow and group them into 10 categories based on their contents. They also analyze how tags are used in StackOverflow. In this study, we extend their work to obtain a deeper understanding on how developers interact with one another on such a question and answer web site. First, we analyze the distributions of developers who ask and answer questions. We also investigate if there is a segregation of the StackOverflow community into questioners and answerers. We also perform automated text …

Semi-Supervised Heterogeneous Fusion For Multimedia Data Co-Clustering, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Dong Xu Mar 2013

Semi-Supervised Heterogeneous Fusion For Multimedia Data Co-Clustering, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Dong Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Co-clustering is a commonly used technique for tapping the rich meta-information of multimedia web documents, including category, annotation, and description, for associative discovery. However, most co-clustering methods proposed for heterogeneous data do not consider the representation problem of short and noisy text and their performance is limited by the empirical weighting of the multi-modal features. In this paper, we propose a generalized form of Heterogeneous Fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory, called GHF-ART, for co-clustering of large-scale web multimedia documents. By extending the two-channel Heterogeneous Fusion ART (HF-ART) to multiple channels, GHF-ART is designed to handle multimedia data with an arbitrarily rich …

Confidence Weighted Mean Reversion Strategy For Online Portfolio Selection, Bin Li, Steven C. H. Hoi, Peilin Zhao, Vivekanand Gopalkrishnan Mar 2013

Confidence Weighted Mean Reversion Strategy For Online Portfolio Selection, Bin Li, Steven C. H. Hoi, Peilin Zhao, Vivekanand Gopalkrishnan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online portfolio selection has been attracting increasing attention from the data mining and machine learning communities. All existing online portfolio selection strategies focus on the first order information of a portfolio vector, though the second order information may also be beneficial to a strategy. Moreover, empirical evidence shows that relative stock prices may follow the mean reversion property, which has not been fully exploited by existing strategies. This article proposes a novel online portfolio selection strategy named Confidence Weighted Mean Reversion (CWMR). Inspired by the mean reversion principle in finance and confidence weighted online learning technique in machine learning, CWMR …

Image Collection Summarization Via Dictionary Learning For Sparse Representation, Chunlei Yang, Jialie Shen, Jinye Peng, Jianping Fan Mar 2013

Image Collection Summarization Via Dictionary Learning For Sparse Representation, Chunlei Yang, Jialie Shen, Jinye Peng, Jianping Fan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, a novel approach is developed to achieve automatic image collection summarization. The effectiveness of the summary is reflected by its ability to reconstruct the original set or each individual image in the set. We have leveraged the dictionary learning for sparse representation model to construct the summary and to represent the image. Specifically we reformulate the summarization problem into a dictionary learning problem by selecting bases which can be sparsely combined to represent the original image and achieve a minimum global reconstruction error, such as MSE (Mean Square Error). The resulting “Sparse Least Square” problem is NP-hard, …

Accountable Authority Identity-Based Encryption With Public Traceability, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Yunlei Zhao, Jian Weng Mar 2013

Accountable Authority Identity-Based Encryption With Public Traceability, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Yunlei Zhao, Jian Weng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

At Crypto’07, Goyal introduced the notion of accountable authority identity-based encryption (A-IBE) in order to mitigate the inherent key escrow problem in identity-based encryption, and proposed two concrete constructions. In an A-IBE system, if the private key generator (PKG) distributes a decryption key or produces an unauthorized decryption box for a user maliciously, it runs the risk of being caught and sued in the court of law with the help of a tracing algorithm. Subsequent efforts focused on constructions of A-IBE schemes with enhanced security. In these A-IBE constructions, the tracing algorithm needs to take a user’s decryption key as …

Infrastructure-Assisted Smartphone-Based Adl Recognition In Multi-Inhabitant Smart Environments, Nirmalya Roy, Archan Misra, Diane Cook Mar 2013

Infrastructure-Assisted Smartphone-Based Adl Recognition In Multi-Inhabitant Smart Environments, Nirmalya Roy, Archan Misra, Diane Cook

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a hybrid approach for recognizing complex Activities of Daily Living that lie between the two extremes of intensive use of body-worn sensors and the use of infrastructural sensors. Our approach harnesses the power of infrastructural sensors (e.g., motion sensors) to provide additional `hidden' context (e.g., room-level location) of an individual and combines this context with smartphone-based sensing of micro-level postural/locomotive states. The major novelty is our focus on multi-inhabitant environments, where we show how spatiotemporal constraints can be used to significantly improve the accuracy and computational overhead of traditional coupled-HMM based approaches. Experimental results on a smart home …

Predicting Project Outcome Leveraging Socio-Technical Network Patterns, Didi Surian, Yuan Tian, David Lo, Hong Cheng, Ee Peng Lim Mar 2013

Predicting Project Outcome Leveraging Socio-Technical Network Patterns, Didi Surian, Yuan Tian, David Lo, Hong Cheng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There are many software projects started daily, some are successful, while others are not. Successful projects get completed, are used by many people, and bring benefits to users. Failed projects do not bring similar benefits. In this work, we are interested in developing an effective machine learning solution that predicts project outcome (i.e., success or failures) from developer socio-technical network. To do so, we investigate successful and failed projects to find factors that differentiate the two. We analyze the socio-technical aspect of the software development process by focusing at the people that contribute to these projects and the interactions among …

Empirical Evaluation Of Bug Linking, Tegawende F. Bissyande, Ferdian Thung, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Laurent Reveillere Mar 2013

Empirical Evaluation Of Bug Linking, Tegawende F. Bissyande, Ferdian Thung, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Laurent Reveillere

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To collect software bugs found by users, development teams often setup bug trackers using systems such as Bugzilla. Developers would then fix some of the bugs and commit corresponding code changes into version control systems such as svn or git. Unfortunately, the links between bug reports and code changes are missing for many software projects as the bug tracking and version control systems are often maintained separately. Yet, linking bug reports to fix commits is important as it could shed light into the nature of bug fixing processes and expose patterns in software management. Bug linking solutions, such as ReLink, …

Kinectarms: A Toolkit For Capturing And Displaying Arm Embodiments In Distributed Tabletop Groupware, Aaron Genest, Carl Gutwin, Anthony Tang, Michael Kalyn, Zenja Ivkovic

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Gestures are a ubiquitous part of human communication over tables, but when tables are distributed, gestures become difficult to capture and represent. There are several problems: extracting arm images from video, representing the height of the gesture, and making the arm embodiment visible and understandable at the remote table. Current solutions to these problems are often expensive, complex to use, and difficult to set up. We have developed a new toolkit - KinectArms - that quickly and easily captures and displays arm embodiments. KinectArms uses a depth camera to segment the video and determine gesture height, and provides several visual …

Simple Identity-Based Encryption With Mediated Rsa, Xuhua Ding, Gene Tsudik Feb 2013

Simple Identity-Based Encryption With Mediated Rsa, Xuhua Ding, Gene Tsudik

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Identity-based encryption (IBE) [5] and digital signatures are important tools in modern secure communication. In general, identity-based cryptographic methods facilitate easy introduction of public key cryptography by allowing an entity’s public key to be derived from some arbitrary identification value such as an email address or a phone number. Identity-based cryptography greatly reduces the need for, and reliance on, public key certificates. Mediated RSA (mRSA) [4] is a simple and practical method of splitting RSA private keys between the user and the Security Mediator (SEM). Neither the user nor the SEM can cheat one another since each signature or decryption …

Combining Crowdsourcing And Google Street View To Identify Street-Level Accessibility Problems, Kotaro Hara, Victoria Le, Jon Froehlich

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Jon FroehlichAbstractPoorly maintained sidewalks, missing curb ramps, and other obstacles pose considerable accessibility challenges; however, there are currently few, if any, mechanisms to determine accessible areas of a city a priori. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of using untrained crowd workers from Amazon Mechanical Turk (turkers) to find, label, and assess sidewalk accessibility problems in Google Street View imagery. We report on two studies: Study 1 examines the feasibility of this labeling task with six dedicated labelers including three wheelchair users; Study 2 investigates the comparative performance of turkers. In all, we collected 13,379 labels and 19,189 verification …

Synthetic Controllable Turbulence Using Robust Second Vorticity Confinement, Shengfeng He, Rynson W. H. Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Capturing fine details of turbulence on a coarse grid is one of the main tasks in real-time fluid simulation. Existing methods for doing this have various limitations. In this paper, we propose a new turbulence method that uses a refined second vorticity confinement method, referred to as robust second vorticity confinement, and a synthesis scheme to create highly turbulent effects from coarse grid. The new technique is sufficiently stable to efficiently produce highly turbulent flows, while allowing intuitive control of vortical structures. Second vorticity confinement captures and defines the vortical features of turbulence on a coarse grid. However, due to …

Authscan: Automatic Extraction Of Web Authentication Protocols From Implementations, Guangdong Bai, Jike Lei, Guozhu Meng, Sai Sathyanarayan Venkatraman, Prateek Saxena, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Feb 2013

Authscan: Automatic Extraction Of Web Authentication Protocols From Implementations, Guangdong Bai, Jike Lei, Guozhu Meng, Sai Sathyanarayan Venkatraman, Prateek Saxena, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ideally, security protocol implementations should be formally verified before they are deployed. However, this is not true in practice. Numerous high-profile vulnerabilities have been found in web authentication protocol implementations, especially in single-sign on (SSO) protocols implementations recently. Much of the prior work on authentication protocol verification has focused on theoretical foundations and building scalable verification tools for checking manually-crafted specifications [17, 18, 44]. In this paper, we address a complementary problem of automatically extracting specifications from implementations. We propose AUTHSCAN, an end-to-end platform to automatically recover authentication protocol specifications from their implementations. AUTHSCAN finds a total of 7 security …

Online Multiple Kernel Classification, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Peilin Zhao, Tianbao Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although both online learning and kernel learning have been studied extensively in machine learning, there is limited effort in addressing the intersecting research problems of these two important topics. As an attempt to fill the gap, we address a new research problem, termed Online Multiple Kernel Classification (OMKC), which learns a kernel-based prediction function by selecting a subset of predefined kernel functions in an online learning fashion. OMKC is in general more challenging than typical online learning because both the kernel classifiers and the subset of selected kernels are unknown, and more importantly the solutions to the kernel classifiers and …

Online Multi-Modal Distance Learning For Scalable Multimedia Retrieval, Hao Xia, Pengcheng Wu, Steven C. H. Hoi Feb 2013

Online Multi-Modal Distance Learning For Scalable Multimedia Retrieval, Hao Xia, Pengcheng Wu, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In many real-word scenarios, e.g., multimedia applications, data often originates from multiple heterogeneous sources or are represented by diverse types of representation, which is often referred to as "multi-modal data". The definition of distance between any two objects/items on multi-modal data is a key challenge encountered by many real-world applications, including multimedia retrieval. In this paper, we present a novel online learning framework for learning distance functions on multi-modal data through the combination of multiple kernels. In order to attack large-scale multimedia applications, we propose Online Multi-modal Distance Learning (OMDL) algorithms, which are significantly more efficient and scalable than the …

I Can Be You: Questioning The Use Of Keystroke Dynamics As Biometrics, Chee Meng Tey, Payas Gupta, Debin Gao Feb 2013

I Can Be You: Questioning The Use Of Keystroke Dynamics As Biometrics, Chee Meng Tey, Payas Gupta, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Keystroke dynamics refer to information about the typing patterns of individuals, such as the relative timing when the individual presses and releases each key. Prior studies suggest that such patterns are unique and cannot be easily imitated. This lays the foundation for the use of keystroke biometrics in authentication systems. The research effort in this area has thus far focused on novel detection techniques to differentiate between legitimate users and imposters. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel feedback and training interface named Mimesis. Mimesis provides both positive and negative feedback on the differences between a submitted pattern vs. a …

Mutual Assessment In The Social Programmer Ecosystem: An Empirical Investigation Of Developer Profile Aggregators, Leif Singer, Fernando Figueira Filho, Brendan Cleary, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey, Kurt Schneider

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The multitude of social media channels that programmers can use to participate in software development has given rise to online developer profiles that aggregate activity across many services. Studying members of such developer profile aggregators, we found an ecosystem that revolves around the social programmer. Developers are assessing each other to evaluate whether other developers are interesting, worth following, or worth collaborating with. They are self-conscious about being assessed, and thus manage their public images. They value passion for software development, new technologies, and learning. Some recruiters participate in the ecosystem and use it to find candidates for hiring; other …

Structures Of Broken Ties: Exploring Unfollow Behavior On Twitter, Bo Xu, Yun Huang, Haewoon Kwak Feb 2013

Structures Of Broken Ties: Exploring Unfollow Behavior On Twitter, Bo Xu, Yun Huang, Haewoon Kwak

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This study investigates unfollow behavior in Twitter, i.e. people removing others from their Twitter following lists. Considering the interdependency and dynamics of unfollow decisions, we use actor-oriented modeling (SIENA) to examine the impacts of reciprocity, status, embeddedness, homophily, and informativeness on tie dissolution. Focusing on ordinary users in tightly-knitted user groups, the results show that relational properties play key roles in the emergence of unfollow behavior: mutual following relations and common followees reduce the likelihood of unfollowing. And unfollow tends to be reciprocal: when a user is unfollowed by someone, he or she will unfollow back. However, there is no …

With the rapid growth of the mobile market, security of mobile platforms is receiving increasing attention from both research community as well as the public. In this paper, we make the first attempt to establish a baseline for security comparison between the two most popular mobile platforms. We investigate applications that run on both Android and iOS and examine the difference in the usage of their security sensitive APIs (SS-APIs). Our analysis over 2,600 applications shows that iOS applications consistently access more SS-APIs than their counterparts on Android. The additional privileges gained on iOS are often associated with accessing private …

A Utp Semantics For Communicating Processes With Shared Variables, Ling Shi, Yongxin Zhao, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Shengchao Qin Jan 2013

A Utp Semantics For Communicating Processes With Shared Variables, Ling Shi, Yongxin Zhao, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Shengchao Qin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

CSP# (Communicating Sequential Programs) is a modelling language designed for specifying concurrent systems by integrating CSP-like compositional operators with sequential programs updating shared variables. In this paper, we define an observation-oriented denotational semantics in an open environment for the CSP# language based on the UTP framework. To deal with shared variables, we lift traditional event-based traces into hybrid traces which consist of event-state pairs for recording process behaviours. We also define refinement to check process equivalence and present a set of algebraic laws which are established based on our denotational semantics. Our approach thus provides a rigorous means for reasoning …

Verification Of Functional And Non-Functional Requirements Of Web Service Composition, Manman Chen, Tian Huat Tan, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jun Pang, Xiaohong Li Jan 2013

Verification Of Functional And Non-Functional Requirements Of Web Service Composition, Manman Chen, Tian Huat Tan, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jun Pang, Xiaohong Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Web services have emerged as an important technology nowadays. There are two kinds of requirements that are crucial to web service composition, which are functional and non-functional requirements. Functional requirements focus on functionality of the composed service, e.g., given a booking service, an example of functional requirements is that a flight ticket with price higher than $2000 will never be purchased. Non-functional requirements are concerned with the quality of service (QoS), e.g., an example of the booking service’s non-functional requirements is that the service will respond to the user within 5 seconds. Non-functional requirements are important to web service composition, …
