What Makes A Music Track Popular In Online Social Networks?, Jing Ren, Jialie Shen, Robert John Kauffman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Tens of thousands of music tracks are uploaded to the Internet every day through social networks that focus on music and videos, as well as portal websites. While some of the content has been popular for decades, some tracks that have just been released have been completely ignored. So what makes a music track popular? Can we predict the popularity of a music track before it is released? In this research, we will focus on an online music social network, Last.fm, and investigate three key factors of a music track that may have impact on its popularity. They include: the …
Patrol Scheduling In An Urban Rail Network, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhi Yuan, Aldy Gunawan
Patrol Scheduling In An Urban Rail Network, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhi Yuan, Aldy Gunawan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents the problem of scheduling security teams to patrol a mass rapid transit rail network of a large urban city. The main objective of patrol scheduling is to deploy security teams to stations of the network at varying time periods subject to rostering as well as security-related constraints. We present several mathematical programming models for different variants of this problem. To generate randomized schedules on a regular basis, we propose injecting randomness by varying the start time and break time for each team as well as varying the visit frequency and visit time for each station according to …
Incentive Mechanism Design For Crowdsourcing: An All-Pay Auction Approach, Tie Luo, Sajal K. Das, Hwee-Pink Tan, Lirong Xia
Incentive Mechanism Design For Crowdsourcing: An All-Pay Auction Approach, Tie Luo, Sajal K. Das, Hwee-Pink Tan, Lirong Xia
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Crowdsourcing can be modeled as a principal-agent problem in which the principal (crowdsourcer) desires to solicit maximal contribution from a group of agents (participants) while agents are only motivated to act to their own respective advantages. To reconcile this tension, we propose an all-pay auction approach to incentivize agents to act in the principal's interst, i.e., maximizing profit, while allowing agents to reap strictly positive utility. Our rationale for advocating all-pay auctions is based on two merits that we identify, namely all-pay auctions (i) compress the common, two-stage "bid-contribute" crowdsourcing process into a single "bid-cum-contribute" stage, and (ii) eliminate the …

On Effective Location-Aware Music Recommendation, Zhiyong Cheng, Jialie Shen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Rapid advances in mobile devices and cloud-based music service now allow consumers to enjoy music any-time and anywhere. Consequently, there has been an increasing demand in studying intelligent techniques to facilitate context-aware music recommendation. However, one important context that is generally overlooked is user's venue, which often includes surrounding atmosphere, correlates with activities, and greatly influences the user's music preferences. In this article, we present a novel venue-aware music recommender system called VenueMusic to effectively identify suitable songs for various types of popular venues in our daily lives. Toward this goal, a Location-aware Topic Model (LTM) is proposed to (i) …
When Peculiarity Makes A Difference: Object Characterisation In Heterogeneous Information Networks, Wei Chen, Feida Zhu, Lei Zhao, Xiaofang Zhou
When Peculiarity Makes A Difference: Object Characterisation In Heterogeneous Information Networks, Wei Chen, Feida Zhu, Lei Zhao, Xiaofang Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A central task in heterogeneous information networks (HIN) is how to characterise an entity, which underlies a wide range of applications such as similarity search, entity profiling and linkage. Most existing work focus on using the main features common to all. While this approach makes sense in settings where commonality is of primary interest, there are many scenarios as important where uncommon and discriminative features are more useful. To address the problem, a novel model COHIN (Characterize Objects in Heterogeneous Information Networks) is proposed, where each object is characterized as a set of feature paths that contain both main and …

SFIA skills framework is widely popular among education institutions and ICT industries. The framework provides ICT skills profiles which can be a valuable resource that supports the career planning of a student. However, currently a student does not have a method or approach to exploit the SFIA framework to align his or her competencies that he or she has acquired during the education program, to the skills defined in the SFIA framework. In this paper, we present a solution model for generating a skills report based on individual's competencies and experiences. In particular, we focus on Information Systems students' profiles. …

Semantic Visualization With Neighborhood Graph Regularization, Tuan Minh Van Le, Hady W. Lauw
Semantic Visualization With Neighborhood Graph Regularization, Tuan Minh Van Le, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Visualization of high-dimensional data, such as text documents, is useful to map out the similarities among various data points. In the high-dimensional space, documents are commonly represented as bags of words, with dimensionality equal to the vocabulary size. Classical approaches to document visualization directly reduce this into visualizable two or three dimensions. Recent approaches consider an intermediate representation in topic space, between word space and visualization space, which preserves the semantics by topic modeling. While aiming for a good fit between the model parameters and the observed data, previous approaches have not considered the local consistency among data instances. We …

Policy Analytics, Household Informedness And The Collection Of Household Hazardous Waste, Kustini Lim-Wavde, Robert J. Kauffman, Greg Dawson
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Proper collection of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is an important action to support environmental sustainability. We investigate the role of household informedness, the degree to which households have the necessary information to make utility-maximizing decisions, as they relate to participation in HHW collection programs. We find two factors that influence household informedness: the provision of public education about HHW and environmental quality information. We conducted an empirical study on HHW collection in California to obtain statistical evidence on the effect of these factors on the amount of HHW collected. The findings of this policy analytics study improve our understanding of …

Visible Light Positioning (VLP) is an exciting new approach but has to overcome considerable challenges before it becomes practical. In particular, the line-of-sight requirement which imports the constraint on the working condition of VLP and can not be solved by the VLP itself. This paper develops techniques to allow VLP to be augmented with traditional WI-FI approach by leveraging the WI-FI enabled smart bulbs which are now widely available. Those Smart bulbs offer several intriguing properties: a very dense deployment (roughly every 2 meters apart), ability to act as sensors that continually provide Wi-Fi signal strength measurements. We utilize these …

Detection Of Bird Nests In Overhead Catenary System Images For High-Speed Rail, Xiao Wu, Ping Yuan, Qiang Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo, Jun-Yan He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The high-speed rail system provides a fast, reliable and comfortable means to transport large number of travelers over long distances. The existence of bird nests in overhead catenary system (OCS) can hazard to the safety of the high-speed rails, which will potentially result in long time delays and expensive damages. A vision-based intelligent inspection system capable of automatic detection of bird nests built on overhead catenary would avoid the damages and increase the reliability and punctuality, and therefore is attractive for a high-speed railway system. However, OCS images exhibit great variations with lighting changes, illumination conditions and complex backgrounds, which …

Opinion Question Answering By Sentiment Clip Localization, Lei Pang, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This article considers multimedia question answering beyond factoid and how-to questions. We are interested in searching videos for answering opinion-oriented questions that are controversial and hotly debated. Examples of questions include "Should Edward Snowden be pardoned?" and "Obamacare-unconstitutional or not?". These questions often invoke emotional response, either positively or negatively, hence are likely to be better answered by videos than texts, due to the vivid display of emotional signals visible through facial expression and speaking tone. Nevertheless, a potential answer of duration 60s may be embedded in a video of 10min, resulting in degraded user experience compared to reading the …

An Adaptive Wireless Passive Human Detection Via Fine-Grained Physical Layer Information, Liangyi Gong, Wu Yang, Zimu Zhou, Dapeng Man, Haibin Cai, Xiancun Zhou, Zheng Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Wireless device-free passive human detection is a key enabler for a range of indoor location-based services such as asset security, emergency responses, privacy-preserving children and elderly monitoring, etc. Since the feature of received signal varies with different multipath propagation conditions, an labor-intensive on-site calibration procedure is almost indispensable to decide the optimal scenario-specific threshold for human detection. Such overhead, however, impedes readily and fast deployment of wireless device-free human detection systems in practical indoor environments. In this work, we explore PHY layer multipath profiling information to extract a novel quantitative metric Ks as an indicator for link sensitivity, and further …

Developing a complex intelligent system by abstracting their behaviors, functionalities, and reasoning mechanisms can be tedious and time consuming. In this paper, we present a framework for developing an application or software system based on smart autonomous components that collaborate with the developer or user to realize the entire system. Inspired by teachable approaches and programming-by-demonstration methods in robotics and end-user development, we treat intelligent agents as teachable components that make up the system to be built. Each agent serves different functionalities and may have prebuilt operations to accomplish its own design objectives. However, each agent may also be equipped …

Semantic memory plays a critical role in reasoning and decision making. It enables an agent to abstract useful knowledge learned from its past experience. Based on an extension of fusion adaptive resonance theory network, this paper presents a novel self-organizing memory model to represent and learn various types of semantic knowledge in a unified manner. The proposed model, called fusion adaptive resonance theory for multimemory learning, incorporates a set of neural processes, through which it may transfer knowledge and cooperate with other long-term memory systems, including episodic memory and procedural memory. Specifically, we present a generic learning process, under which …

The advent of Integrated Energy Systems enabled various distributed energy to access the system through different power electronic devices. The development of this has made the harmonic environment more complex. It needs low complexity and high precision of harmonic detection and analysis methods to improve power quality. To solve the shortages of large data storage capacities and high complexity of compression in sampling under the Nyquist sampling framework, this research paper presents a harmonic analysis scheme based on compressed sensing theory. The proposed scheme enables the performance of the functions of compressive sampling, signal reconstruction and harmonic detection simultaneously. In …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Authenticated Key Exchange (AKE) protocols have been widely deployed in many real-world applications for securing communication channels. In this paper, we make the following contributions. First, we revisit the security modelling of leakage-resilient AKE protocols, and show that the existing models either impose some unnatural restrictions or do not sufficiently capture leakage attacks in reality. We then introduce a new strong yet meaningful security model, named challenge-dependent leakage-resilient eCK (CLR- eCKCLR- eCK) model, to capture challenge-dependent leakage attacks on both long-term secret key and ephemeral secret key (i.e., randomness). Second, we propose a general framework for constructing one-round CLR- eCKCLR- …

Diversity Maximization Speedup For Localizing Faults In Single-Fault And Multi-Fault Programs, Xin Xia, Liang Gong, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Hongyu Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Fault localization is useful for reducing debugging effort. Such techniques require test cases with oracles, which can determine whether a program behaves correctly for every test input. Although most fault localization techniques can localize faults relatively accurately even with a small number of test cases, choosing the right test cases and creating oracles for them are not easy. Test oracle creation is expensive because it can take much manual labeling effort (i.e., effort needed to decide whether the test cases pass or fail). Given a number of test cases to be executed, it is challenging to minimize the number of …

Improving The Sensitivity Of Unobtrusive Inactivity Detection In Sensor-Enabled Homes For The Elderly, Alvin C. Valera, Hwee-Pink Tan, Liming Bai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Unobtrusive in-home monitoring systems are gaining acceptability and are being deployed to enable relatives and caregivers to remotely monitor and provide timely care to their elderly loved ones or senior clients, respectively, who are living independently. Such systems can provide information about nonmovement or inactivity of the elderly resident. As prolonged inactivity could mean potential danger, several algorithms have been proposed to automatically detect unusually long durations of inactivity. Such schemes, however, suffer from low sensitivity due to their high detection latency. In this paper, we propose Dwell Time-enhanced Dynamic Threshold (DTDT), a scheme for computing adaptive alert thresholds that …

Value-Inspired Service Design In Elderly Home-Monitoring Systems, Na Liu, Sandeep Purao, Hwee-Pink Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The provision of elderly home-monitoring systems to enhance aging-in-place requires the service to meet the needs of both the elderly and their caregivers. The design of such IT services requires interdisciplinary efforts to look beyond the technical requirements. Taking a value-inspired design perspective, the study argues that service design for promoting aging-in-place needs to reconcile the values of both the elderly and caregivers. Drawn from the framework of basic human values and the unique experience of the SHINESeniors project, the study extracts the core values for elderly and caregivers using a multi-method case analysis. We suggest that both system and …

Cca-Secure Keyed-Fully Homomorphic Encryption, Junzuo Lai, Deng, Robert H., Changshe Ma, Kouichi Sakurai, Jian Weng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To simultaneously achieve CCA security and homomorphic property for encryption, Emura et al. introduced a new cryptographic primitive named keyed-homomorphic encryption, in which homomorphic ciphertext manipulations can only be performed by someone holding a devoted evaluation key which, by itself, does not enable decryption. A keyed-homomorphic encryption scheme should provide CCA2 security when the evaluation key is unavailable to the adversary and remain CCA1-secure when the evaluation key is exposed. While existing keyed-homomorphic encryption schemes only allow simple computations on encrypted data, our goal is to construct CCA-secure keyed-fully homomorphic encryption (keyed-FHE) capable of evaluating any functions on encrypted data …

Prolonged working hours are a primary cause of stress, work related injuries (e.g, RSIs), and work-life imbalance in employees at a workplace. As reported by some studies, taking timely breaks from continuous work not only reduces stress and exhaustion but also improves productivity, employee bonding, and camaraderie. Our goal is to build a system that automatically detects breaks thereby assisting in maintaining healthy work-break balance. In this paper, we focus on detecting foosball breaks of employees at a workplace using a smartwatch. We selected foosball as it is one of the most commonly played games at many workplaces in the …

Traditional code search engines often do not perform well with natural language queries since they mostly apply keyword matching. These engines thus need carefully designed queries containing information about programming APIs for code search. Unfortunately, existing studies suggest that preparing an effective code search query is both challenging and time consuming for the developers. In this paper, we propose a novel API recommendation technique -- RACK that recommends a list of relevant APIs for a natural language query for code search by exploiting keyword-API associations from the crowdsourced knowledge of Stack Overflow. We first motivate our technique using an exploratory …

History Driven Program Repair, Xuan-Bach D. Le, David Lo, Claire Le Goues
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Effective automated program repair techniques have great potential to reduce the costs of debugging and maintenance. Previously proposed automated program repair (APR) techniques often follow a generate-and-validate and test- case-driven procedure: They first randomly generate a large pool of fix candidates and then exhaustively validate the quality of the candidates by testing them against existing or provided test suites. Unfortunately, many real-world bugs cannot be repaired by existing techniques even after more than 12 hours of computation in a multi-core cloud environment. More work is needed to advance the capabilities of modern APR techniques. We propose a new technique that …

A More Accurate Model For Finding Tutorial Segments Explaining Apis, He Jiang, Jingxuan Zhang, Xiaochen Li, Zhilei Ren, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Developers prefer to utilize third-party libraries when they implement some functionalities and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are frequently used by them. Facing an unfamiliar API, developers tend to consult tutorials as learning resources. Unfortunately, the segments explaining a specific API scatter across tutorials. Hence, it remains a challenging issue to find the relevant segments. In this study, we propose a more accurate model to find the exact tutorial fragments explaining APIs. This new model consists of a text classifier with domain specific features. More specifically, we discover two important indicators to complement traditional text based features, namely co-occurrence APIs and …

Nowadays, most software use multiple programming languages to implement certain functionalities based on the strengths and weaknesses of different languages. Researchers in the past have studied the impact of independent programming languages on software quality, however, there has been little or no research on the impact of multiple languages on the quality of software. Does the use of multiple languages cause more bugs? Are certain languages when used with other languages make software more bug prone? What are the relationships between multi-language usage and various bug categories? In this study, we perform a large scale empirical investigation to shed light …

In our preliminary study, we proposed a smartphone-integrated, unobtrusive electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring system, Sinabro, which monitors a user's ECG opportunistically during daily smartphone use without explicit user intervention. The proposed system also monitors ECG-derived features, such as heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), to support the pervasive healthcare apps for smartphones based on the user's high-level contexts, such as stress and affective state levels. In this study, we have extended the Sinabro system by: (1) upgrading the sensor device; (2) improving the feature extraction process; and (3) evaluating extensions of the system. We evaluated these extensions with a …
