In the current retail segment, the retail store owners are keen to understand the browsing behavior and purchase pattern of the shoppers inside the physical stores. Profiling the behavior of the shopper is key to success for any marketing strategies that can optimize or personalize shopping-related services in real-time. We envision that exploiting the knowledge of real-time behavior of shopper’s in-store activities enables novel applications such as: (a) targeted advertising or recommendations: based on longer term shopper profiles, (b) proactive retail help to assist the shoppers who are confused in choosing between two items, (c) smart reminders that can remind …

Adaptable Key-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption With Time Interval, Siqi Ma, Junzuo Lai, Deng, Robert H., Xuhua Ding Jun 2016

Adaptable Key-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption With Time Interval, Siqi Ma, Junzuo Lai, Deng, Robert H., Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we introduce a new cryptographic primitive: adaptable KP-ABE with time interval (KP-TIABE), which is an extension of key-policy attribute-based encryption (KP-ABE). Adaptable KP-TIABE specifies a decryption time interval for every ciphertext such that the ciphertext can only be decrypted within this time interval. To be more flexible, the decryption time interval associated with a ciphertext can be adjusted on demand by a semi-trusted server. We propose a formal model for adaptable KP-TIABE, present a concrete adaptable KP-TIABE scheme and prove its security under the security model.

Value-Inspired Elderly Care Service Design For Aging-In-Place, Na Liu, Sandeep Purao, Hwee-Pink Tan Jun 2016

Value-Inspired Elderly Care Service Design For Aging-In-Place, Na Liu, Sandeep Purao, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most current projects aimed at in-home monitoring for the elderly appear to focus on demonstrating technical feasibility and ensuring safety. In doing so, they often overlook the complexity of the interactions between the elderly and the caregivers. This study explores this complexity by adopting a value-inspired design perspective. Following an action design method, we describe the (re)design of the system and service protocol for an elderly-home monitoring effort. The work requires that we leverage the capabilities (of the technological infrastructure system as well as the service providers) to reconcile the values held by the participants (the elderly and their caregivers). …

Collective Rumor Correction On The Death Hoax Of A Political Figure In Social Media, Alton Y. K. Chua, Sin-Mei Cheah, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee-Peng Lim Jun 2016

Collective Rumor Correction On The Death Hoax Of A Political Figure In Social Media, Alton Y. K. Chua, Sin-Mei Cheah, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conversations on social media networks that discuss a crisis incident as it unfolds have become a norm in recent years. Left to its own devices, such conversations could quickly degenerate into rumor mills. Little research has thus far examined the correction of rumors on social media. Using the third person effect as a theoretical underpinning, we developed a model of collective rumor correction on social media based on an incident surrounding the death hoax of a political figure. Tweets from Twitter were collected and analyzed for the period when a spike of circulating rumors speculating the demise of Singapore's first …

Fusing Wifi And Video Sensing For Accurate Group Detection In Indoor Spaces, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Zaman Lantra, Archan Misra Jun 2016

Fusing Wifi And Video Sensing For Accurate Group Detection In Indoor Spaces, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Zaman Lantra, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Understanding one's group context in indoor spaces is useful for many reasons - e.g., at a shopping mall, knowing a customer's group context can help in offering context-specific incentives, or estimating taxi demand for customers exiting the mall. Group detection and monitoring using WiFi-based indoor location traces fails when users are invisible (either because they don't carry smartphones, or because their WiFi is turned OFF) or when location tracking is inaccurate. In this paper, we propose a multi-modal group detection system that fuses two independent modes: video and WiFi, for detecting groups with low latency and high accuracy. We present …

Indoor Location Error-Detection Via Crowdsourced Multi-Dimensional Mobile Data, Savina Singla, Archan Misra Jun 2016

Indoor Location Error-Detection Via Crowdsourced Multi-Dimensional Mobile Data, Savina Singla, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We explore the use of multi-dimensional mobile sensing data as a means of identifying errors in one or more of those data streams. More specifically, we look at the possibility of identifying indoor locations with likely incorrect/stale Wi-Fi fingerprints, by using concurrent readings from Wi-Fi and barometer sensors from a collection of mobile devices. Our key contribution is a novel two-step process: (i) using longitudinal, crowd-sourced readings of (possibly incorrect) Wi-Fi location estimates to statistically estimate the barometer calibration offset of individual mobile devices, and (ii) then, using such offset-corrected barometer readings from devices (that are supposedly collocated) to identify …

Cdrep: Automatic Repair Of Cryptographic-Misuses In Android Applications, Siqi Ma, David Lo, Teng Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cryptography is increasingly being used in mobile applications to provide various security services; from user authentication, data privacy, to secure communications. However, there are plenty of mistakes that developers could accidentally make when using cryptography in their mobile apps and such mistakes can lead to a false sense of security. Recent research efforts indeed show that a significant portion of mobile apps in both Android and iOS platforms misused cryptographic APIs. In this paper, we present CDRep, a tool for automatically repairing cryptographic misuse defects in Android apps. We classify such defects into seven types and manually assemble the corresponding …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, a branch of machine learning algorithms called deep learning gained huge attention to boost up accuracy of a variety of sensing applications. However, execution of deep learning algorithm such as convolutional neural network on mobile processor is non-trivial due to intensive computational requirements. In this paper, we present our early design of DeepSense - a mobile GPU-based deep convolutional neural network (CNN) framework. For its design, we first explored the differences between server-class and mobile-class GPUs, and studied effectiveness of various optimization strategies such as branch divergence elimination and memory vectorization. Our results show that DeepSense is able to …

Demo: Multi-Device Gestural Interfaces, Tran Huy Vu, Youngki Lee, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Varieties of wearable devices such as smart watches, Virtual/Augmented Reality devices (AR/VR) are much more affordable with interesting capabilities. In our vision, a person may use more than one devices at a time, and they form an eco-system of wearable devices. Therefore, we aim to build a system where an application expands its input and output among different devices, and adapts its input/output stream for different contexts.

Iccdetector: Icc-Based Malware Detection On Android, Xu Ke, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng Jun 2016

Iccdetector: Icc-Based Malware Detection On Android, Xu Ke, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most existing mobile malware detection methods (e.g., Kirin and DroidMat) are designed based on the resources required by malwares (e.g., permissions, application programming interface (API) calls, and system calls). These methods capture the interactions between mobile apps and Android system, but ignore the communications among components within or cross application boundaries. As a consequence, the majority of the existing methods are less effective in identifying many typical malwares, which require a few or no suspicious resources, but leverage on inter-component communication (ICC) mechanism when launching stealthy attacks. To address this challenge, we propose a new malware detection method, named ICCDetector. …

Designing And Comparing Multiple Portfolios Of Parameter Configurations For Online Algorithm Selection, Aldy Gunawan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Mustafa Misir Jun 2016

Designing And Comparing Multiple Portfolios Of Parameter Configurations For Online Algorithm Selection, Aldy Gunawan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Mustafa Misir

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Algorithm portfolios seek to determine an effective set of algorithms that can be used within an algorithm selection framework to solve problems. A limited number of these portfolio studies focus on generating different versions of a target algorithm using different parameter configurations. In this paper, we employ a Design of Experiments (DOE) approach to determine a promising range of values for each parameter of an algorithm. These ranges are further processed to determine a portfolio of parameter configurations, which would be used within two online Algorithm Selection approaches for solving different instances of a given combinatorial optimization problem effectively. We …

Strategic Planning For Setting Up Base Stations In Emergency Medical Systems, Supriyo Ghosh, Pradeep Varakantham Jun 2016

Strategic Planning For Setting Up Base Stations In Emergency Medical Systems, Supriyo Ghosh, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Emergency Medical Systems (EMSs) are an important component of public health-care services. Improving infrastructure for EMS and specifically the construction of base stations at the ”right” locations to reduce response times is the main focus of this paper. This is a computationally challenging task because of the: (a) exponentially large action space arising from having to consider combinations of potential base locations, which themselves can be significant; and (b) direct impact on the performance of the ambulance allocation problem, where we decide allocation of ambulances to bases. We present an incremental greedy approach to discover the placement of bases that …

Robust Partial Order Schedules For Rcpsp/Max With Durational Uncertainty, Na Fu, Pradeep Varakantham, Hoong Chuin Lau Jun 2016

Robust Partial Order Schedules For Rcpsp/Max With Durational Uncertainty, Na Fu, Pradeep Varakantham, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we consider RCPSP/max with durational uncertainty. We focus on computing robust Partial Order Schedules (or, in short POS) which can be executed with risk controlled feasibility and optimality, i.e., there is stochastic posteriori quality guarantee that the derived POS can be executed with all constraints honored and completion before robust makespan. To address this problem, we propose BACCHUS: a solution method on Benders Accelerated Cut Creation for Handling Uncertainty in Scheduling. In our proposed approach, we first give an MILP formulation for the deterministic RCPSP/max and partition the model into POS generation process and start time schedule …

User Behavior Mining In Microblogging, Tuan Anh Hoang Jun 2016

User Behavior Mining In Microblogging, Tuan Anh Hoang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation addresses the modeling of factors concerning microblogging users' content and behavior. We focus on two sets of factors. The first set includes behavioral factors of users and content items driving content propagation in microblogging. The second set consists of latent topics and communities of users as the users are engaged in content generation and behavior adoptions. These two sets of factors are extremely important in many applications, e.g., network monitoring and recommender systems. In the first part of this dissertation, we identify user virality, user susceptibility, and content virality as three behavioral factors that affect users' behaviors in …

Hci Testing In Laboratory Or Field Settings, Chuan-Hoo Tan, Austin Silva, Rich Lee, Kanliang Wang, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents perspectives from both academia and practice on how an HCI testing is to be conducted and the deliberations that go into the testing. HCI testing can be conducted in closed-door laboratory or in a field setting. While there is an increased interest in field testing of an HCI artifact, there is always an enduring concern over how to administer a field testing given that the testers will have less control over the course of testing. In this paper, we cover HCI testing deliberation as well as the operational issues of field testing, and conclude the paper with …

Context-Aware Advertisement Recommendation For High-Speed Social News Feeding, Yuchen Li, Dongxiang Zhang, Ziquan Lan, Kian-Lee Tan May 2016

Context-Aware Advertisement Recommendation For High-Speed Social News Feeding, Yuchen Li, Dongxiang Zhang, Ziquan Lan, Kian-Lee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social media advertising is a multi-billion dollar market and has become the major revenue source for Facebook and Twitter. To deliver ads to potentially interested users, these social network platforms learn a prediction model for each user based on their personal interests. However, as user interests often evolve slowly, the user may end up receiving repetitive ads. In this paper, we propose a context-aware advertising framework that takes into account the relatively static personal interests as well as the dynamic news feed from friends to drive growth in the ad click-through rate. To meet the real-time requirement, we first propose …

Modeling Autobiographical Memory In Human-Like Autonomous Agents, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although autobiographical memory is an important part of the human mind, there has been little effort on modeling autobiographical memory in autonomous agents. With the motivation of developing human-like intelligence, in this paper, we delineate our approach to enable an agent to maintain memories of its own and to wander in mind. Our model, named Autobiographical Memory-Adaptive Resonance Theory network (AM-ART), is designed to capture autobiographical memories, comprising pictorial snapshots of one’s life experiences together with the associated context, namely time, location, people, activity, and emotion. In terms of both network structure and dynamics, AM-ART coincides with the autobiographical memory …

#Greysanatomy Vs. #Yankees: Demographics And Hashtag Use On Twitter, Jisun An, Ingmar Weber May 2016

#Greysanatomy Vs. #Yankees: Demographics And Hashtag Use On Twitter, Jisun An, Ingmar Weber

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Demographics, in particular, gender, age, and race, are a key predictor of human behavior. Despite the significant effect that demographics plays, most scientific studies using online social media do not consider this factor, mainly due to the lack of such information. In this work, we use state-of-the-art face analysis software to infer gender, age, and race from profile images of 350K Twitter users from New York. For the period from November 1, 2014 to October 31, 2015, we study which hashtags are used by different demographic groups. Though we find considerable overlap for the most popular hashtags, there are also …

The Social Side Of Software Platform Ecosystems, Cleidson R. B. Da Souza, Fernando Figueira Filho, Müller Miranda, Renato Pina Ferreira, Christoph Treude, Leif Singer

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software ecosystems as a paradigm for large-scale software development encompass a complex mix of technical, business, and social aspects. While significant research has been conducted to understand both the technical and business aspects, the social aspects of software ecosystems are less well understood. To close this gap, this paper presents the results of an empirical study aimed at understanding the influence of social aspects on developers’ participation in software ecosystems. We conducted 25 interviews with mobile software developers and an online survey with 83 respondents from the mobile software development community. Our results point out a complex social system based …

Overcoming Open Source Project Entry Barriers With A Portal For Newcomers, Igor Steinmacher, Tayana U. Conte, Christoph Treude, Marco Aurélio Gerosa May 2016

Overcoming Open Source Project Entry Barriers With A Portal For Newcomers, Igor Steinmacher, Tayana U. Conte, Christoph Treude, Marco Aurélio Gerosa

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Community-based Open Source Software (OSS) projects are usually self-organized and dynamic, receiving contributions from distributed volunteers. Newcomer are important to the survival, long-term success, and continuity of these communities. However, newcomers face many barriers when making their first contribution to an OSS project, leading in many cases to dropouts. Therefore, a major challenge for OSS projects is to provide ways to support newcomers during their first contribution. In this paper, we propose and evaluate FLOSScoach, a portal created to support newcomers to OSS projects. FLOSScoach was designed based on a conceptual model of barriers created in our previous work. To …
