Intelligent Adaptive Gossip-Based Broadcast Protocol For Uav-Mec Using Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning, Zen Ren, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Zhuowen Li, Zihao Wang, Mengyao Zhu, Ximeng Liu, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

UAV-assisted mobile edge computing (UAV-MEC) has been proposed to offer computing resources for smart devices and user equipment. UAV cluster aided MEC rather than one UAV-aided MEC as edge pool is the newest edge computing architecture. Unfortunately, the data packet exchange during edge computing within the UAV cluster hasn't received enough attention. UAVs need to collaborate for the wide implementation of MEC, relying on the gossip-based broadcast protocol. However, gossip has the problem of long propagation delay, where the forwarding probability and neighbors are two factors that are difficult to balance. The existing works improve gossip from only one factor, …

The Three-Sided Market Of On-Demand Delivery, S. Bahrami, M. Nourinejad, Y. Yin, Hai Wang Jan 2023

The Three-Sided Market Of On-Demand Delivery, S. Bahrami, M. Nourinejad, Y. Yin, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

On-demand delivery services are three-sided markets that enable interactions between customers and suppliers with the help of crowdsourced drivers. Customers and suppliers may pay a commission to gain access to the service and drivers are granted a wage for providing their delivery service. This study characterizes the properties of three-side on-demand delivery markets, and proposes pricing strategies that enable the platform to manipulate the market towards profit or social welfare maximizing outcomes. We consider earning-sensitive independent drivers, price-and-time-sensitive customers, and price-sensitive suppliers. By assuming that all players are heterogeneous in their valuation of the service, we model their numbers as …

Neighborhood Retail Amenities And Taxi Trip Behavior: A Natural Experiment In Singapore, Kwan Ok Lee, Shih-Fen Cheng Jan 2023

Neighborhood Retail Amenities And Taxi Trip Behavior: A Natural Experiment In Singapore, Kwan Ok Lee, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While a small change in land use planning in existing neighborhoods may significantly reduce private vehicle trips, we do not have a great understanding of the magnitude of the project- and shock-based causal change in travel behaviors, especially for the retail purpose. We analyze the impact of newly developed malls on the retail trip behavior of nearby residents for shopping, dining or services. Using the difference-in-differences approach and big data from a major taxi company in Singapore, we find that households residing within 800 m from a new mall are significantly less likely to take taxis to other retail destinations …

Sleepmore: Inferring Sleep Duration At Scale Via Multi-Device Wifi Sensing, Camellia Zakaria, Gizem Yilmaz, Priyanka Mammen, Michael Chee, Prashant Shenoy, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The availability of commercial wearable trackers equipped with features to monitor sleep duration and quality has enabled more useful sleep health monitoring applications and analyses. However, much research has reported the challenge of long-term user retention in sleep monitoring through these modalities. Since modern Internet users own multiple mobile devices, our work explores the possibility of employing ubiquitous mobile devices and passive WiFi sensing techniques to predict sleep duration as the fundamental measure for complementing long-term sleep monitoring initiatives. In this paper, we propose SleepMore, an accurate and easy-to-deploy sleep-tracking approach based on machine learning over the user's WiFi network …

Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction Incorporating Syntactic Constituency Parsing Tree And Commonsense Knowledge Graph, Zhenda Hu, Zhaoxia Wang, Yinglin Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The aspect sentiment triplet extraction (ASTE) task aims to extract the target term and the opinion term, and simultaneously identify the sentiment polarity of target-opinion pairs from the given sentences. While syntactic constituency information and commonsense knowledge are both important and valuable for the ASTE task, only a few studies have explored how to integrate them via flexible graph convolutional networks (GCNs) for this task. To address this gap, this paper proposes a novel end-to-end model, namely GCN-EGTS, which is an enhanced Grid Tagging Scheme (GTS) for ASTE leveraging syntactic constituency parsing tree and a commonsense knowledge graph based on …

Is A Pretrained Model The Answer To Situational Awareness Detection On Social Media?, Siaw Ling Lo, Kahhe Lee, Yuhao Zhang Jan 2023

Is A Pretrained Model The Answer To Situational Awareness Detection On Social Media?, Siaw Ling Lo, Kahhe Lee, Yuhao Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social media can be valuable for extracting information about an event or incident on the ground. However, the vast amount of content shared, and the linguistic variants of languages used on social media make it challenging to identify important situational awareness content to aid in decision-making for first responders. In this study, we assess whether pretrained models can be used to address the aforementioned challenges on social media. Various pretrained models, including static word embedding (such as Word2Vec and GloVe) and contextualized word embedding (such as DistilBERT) are studied in detail. According to our findings, a vanilla DistilBERT pretrained language …

There are known issues in authentic assessment design practices in digital education, which include the lack of freedom-of-choice, lack of focus on the multimodal nature of the digital process, and shortage of effective feedbacks. This study looks to identify an assessment design construct that overcomes these issues. Specifically, this study introduces an authentic assessment that combines gamification (G) with heutagogy (H) and multimodality (M) of assessments, building upon rich pool of multimodal data and learning analytics (A), known as GHMA. This is a skills-oriented assessment approach, where learners determine their own goals and create individualized multimodal artefacts, receive cognitive challenge …

Just-In-Time Obsolete Comment Detection And Update, Zhongxin Liu, Xin Xia, David Lo, Meng Yan, Shangping Li Jan 2023

Just-In-Time Obsolete Comment Detection And Update, Zhongxin Liu, Xin Xia, David Lo, Meng Yan, Shangping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Comments are valuable resources for the development, comprehension and maintenance of software. However, while changing code, developers sometimes neglect the evolution of the corresponding comments, resulting in obsolete comments. Such obsolete comments can mislead developers and introduce bugs in the future, and are therefore detrimental. We notice that by detecting and updating obsolete comments in time with code changes, obsolete comments can be effectively reduced and even avoided. We refer to this task as Just-In-Time (JIT) Obsolete Comment Detection and Update. In this work, we propose a two-stage framework named CUP2 (Two-stage Comment UPdater) to automate this task. CUP2 consists …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To reduce the cost of human and material resources and improve the collaborations among medical systems, research laboratories and insurance companies for healthcare researches and commercial activities, electronic medical records (EMRs) have been proposed to shift from paperwork to friendly shareable electronic records. To take advantage of EMRs efficiently and reduce the cost of local storage, EMRs are usually outsourced to the remote cloud for sharing medical data with authorized users. However, cloud service providers are untrustworthy. In this paper, we propose an efficient, secure, and flexible EMR sharing system by introducing a novel cryptosystem called dual-policy revocable attribute-based encryption …

Learning Analytics In Informal, Participatory Collaborative Learning, Michelle L. F. Cheong, Aditya Singh, Yun-Chen Chen, Bing Tian Dai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning Analytics was recognized to be “the third wave of large-scale developments in instructional technology”. Learning Management Systems (LMSs) have been widely adopted as the learning analytics tools because the captured data represents how the learners’ interact with the system during formal learning. However, most LMSs’ analytics models do not capture learning activities outside the systems. We built an integrated Telegram mobile application and a web-based portal discussion forum, to enable informal, participatory and collaborative learning beyond the classroom. We analyzed student-initiated question-and-answer discussion posts where our machine learning algorithm will predict the quality of the posts, and the system …

Taurus: Towards A Unified Force Representation And Universal Solver For Graph Layout, Mingliang Xue, Zhi Wang, Fahai Zhong, Yong Wang, Mingliang Xu, Oliver Deussen, Yunhai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Over the past few decades, a large number of graph layout techniques have been proposed for visualizing graphs from various domains. In this paper, we present a general framework, Taurus, for unifying popular techniques such as the spring-electrical model, stress model, and maxent-stress model. It is based on a unified force representation, which formulates most existing techniques as a combination of quotient-based forces that combine power functions of graph-theoretical and Euclidean distances. This representation enables us to compare the strengths and weaknesses of existing techniques, while facilitating the development of new methods. Based on this, we propose a new balanced …

Vacsen: A Visualization Approach For Noise Awareness In Quantum Computing, Shaolun Ruan, Yong Wang, Weiwen Jiang, Ying Mao, Qiang Guan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Quantum computing has attracted considerable public attention due to its exponential speedup over classical computing. Despite its advantages, today's quantum computers intrinsically suffer from noise and are error-prone. To guarantee the high fidelity of the execution result of a quantum algorithm, it is crucial to inform users of the noises of the used quantum computer and the compiled physical circuits. However, an intuitive and systematic way to make users aware of the quantum computing noise is still missing. In this paper, we fill the gap by proposing a novel visualization approach to achieve noise-aware quantum computing. It provides a holistic …

Relation Preserving Triplet Mining For Stabilising The Triplet Loss In Re-Identification Systems, Adhiraj Ghosh, Kuruparan Shanmugalingam, Wen-Yan Lin Jan 2023

Relation Preserving Triplet Mining For Stabilising The Triplet Loss In Re-Identification Systems, Adhiraj Ghosh, Kuruparan Shanmugalingam, Wen-Yan Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Object appearances change dramatically with pose variations. This creates a challenge for embedding schemes that seek to map instances with the same object ID to locations that are as close as possible. This issue becomes significantly heightened in complex computer vision tasks such as re-identification(reID). In this paper, we suggest that these dramatic appearance changes are indications that an object ID is composed of multiple natural groups, and it is counterproductive to forcefully map instances from different groups to a common location. This leads us to introduce Relation Preserving Triplet Mining (RPTM), a feature matching guided triplet mining scheme, that …

Reinforcement Learning Enhanced Pichunter For Interactive Search, Zhixin Ma, Jiaxin Wu, Weixiong Loo, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the tremendous increase in video data size, search performance could be impacted significantly. Specifically, in an interactive system, a real-time system allows a user to browse, search and refine a query. Without a speedy system quickly, the main ingredient to engage a user to stay focused, an interactive system becomes less effective even with a sophisticated deep learning system. This paper addresses this challenge by leveraging approximate search, Bayesian inference, and reinforcement learning. For approximate search, we apply a hierarchical navigable small world, which is an efficient approximate nearest neighbor search algorithm. To quickly prune the search scope, we …

Ranked Keyword Search Over Encrypted Cloud Data Through Machine Learning Method, Yinbin Miao, Wei Zheng, Xiaohua Jia, Ximeng Liu, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ranked keyword search over encrypted data has been extensively studied in cloud computing as it enables data users to find the most relevant results quickly. However, existing ranked multi-keyword search solutions cannot achieve efficient ciphertext search and dynamic updates with forward security simultaneously. To solve the above problems, we first present a basic Machine Learning-based Ranked Keyword Search (ML-RKS) scheme in the static setting by using the k-means clustering algorithm and a balanced binary tree. ML-RKS reduces the search complexity without sacrificing the search accuracy, but is still vulnerable to forward security threats when applied in the dynamic setting. Then, …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Coal-fired power plays a critical role in China's compliance with the Paris Agreement. This research quantifies China's stranded coal assets under different coal capacity expansion scenarios with an integrated approach and high-precision coal-fired power database. From a top-down perspective, firstly, the pathway of China's coal-fired power capacity consistent with the global 2 degrees C scenario is outlined and then those stranded coal-fired power plants are identified with a bottom-up perspective. Stranded value is estimated based upon a cash flow algorithm. Results show that if coal capacity stabilizes during 2020-2030, China will only incur a sizeable yet manageable stranded asset loss …

S-Prompts Learning With Pre-Trained Transformers: An Occam's Razor For Domain Incremental Learning, Yabin Wang, Zhiwu Huang, Xiaopeng. Hong Dec 2022

S-Prompts Learning With Pre-Trained Transformers: An Occam's Razor For Domain Incremental Learning, Yabin Wang, Zhiwu Huang, Xiaopeng. Hong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

State-of-the-art deep neural networks are still struggling to address the catastrophic forgetting problem in continual learning. In this paper, we propose one simple paradigm (named as S-Prompting) and two concrete approaches to highly reduce the forgetting degree in one of the most typical continual learning scenarios, i.e., domain increment learning (DIL). The key idea of the paradigm is to learn prompts independently across domains with pre-trained transformers, avoiding the use of exemplars that commonly appear in conventional methods. This results in a win-win game where the prompting can achieve the best for each domain. The independent prompting across domains only …

Deep Just-In-Time Defect Localization, Fangcheng Qiu, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy, Xinyu Wang Dec 2022

Deep Just-In-Time Defect Localization, Fangcheng Qiu, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy, Xinyu Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

During software development and maintenance, defect localization is an essential part of software quality assurance. Even though different techniques have been proposed for defect localization, i.e., information retrieval (IR)-based techniques and spectrum-based techniques, they can only work after the defect has been exposed, which can be too late and costly to adapt to the newly introduced bugs in the daily development. There are also many JIT defect prediction tools that have been proposed to predict the buggy commit. But these tools do not locate the suspicious buggy positions in the buggy commit. To assist developers to detect bugs in time …

Supply Regulation Under The Exclusion Policy In A Ride-Sourcing Market, Xiaonan Li, Xiangyong Li, Hai Wang, Junxin Shi, Yash P. Aneja

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

On-demand ride-sourcing platforms have quickly emerged and become ubiquitous in our daily lives. Motivated by the rising public concern about service quality in the ride-sourcing market, this paper aims to examine the impact of exclusion policy that can serve as both quality management and supply regulation strategy. With an exclusion policy, the platform excludes low-quality service providers/drivers from the ride-sourcing market by setting a quality threshold of admission (QTA). We propose a model to describe and analyze the market equilibrium under the exclusion policy and present our analytical and numerical results – some of which are non-intuitive and intriguing. Considering …

Question-Attentive Review-Level Recommendation Explanation, Trung Hoang Le, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recommendation explanations help to improve their acceptance by end users. The form of explanation of interest here is presenting an existing review of the recommended item. The challenge is in selecting a suitable review, which is customarily addressed by assessing the relative importance of each review to the recommendation objective. Our focus is on improving review-level explanation by leveraging additional information in the form of questions and answers (QA). The proposed framework employs QA in an attention mechanism that aligns reviews to various QAs of an item and assesses their contribution jointly to the recommendation objective. The benefits are two-fold. …

Make Your Own Sprites: Aliasing-Aware And Cell-Controllable Pixelization, Zongwei Wu, Liangyu Chai, Nanxuan Zhao, Bailin Deng, Yongtuo Liu, Qiang Wen, Junle Wang, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pixel art is a unique art style with the appearance of low resolution images. In this paper, we propose a data-driven pixelization method that can produce sharp and crisp cell effects with controllable cell sizes. Our approach overcomes the limitation of existing learning-based methods in cell size control by introducing a reference pixel art to explicitly regularize the cell structure. In particular, the cell structure features of the reference pixel art are used as an auxiliary input for the pixelization process, and for measuring the style similarity between the generated result and the reference pixel art. Furthermore, we disentangle the …

Understanding Sentiment Through Context, Richard M.Crowley, M.H. Franco Wong Dec 2022

Understanding Sentiment Through Context, Richard M.Crowley, M.H. Franco Wong

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine whether empirical results using text-based sentiment of U.S. annual reports depend on the underlying context, within documents, from which sentiment is measured. We construct a clause-level measure of context, showing that sentiment is driven by many different contexts and that positive and negative sentiment are driven by different contexts. We then construct context-level sentiment measures and examine whether sentiment works as expected at the context-level across four prediction problems. Our results demonstrate that document-level sentiment exhibits significant noise in prediction and suggest that document-level aggregation of sentiment leads to missed empirical nuances. The contexts driving sentiment results vary …

Pacific: Towards Proactive Conversational Question Answering Over Tabular And Textual Data In Finance, Yang Deng, Wenqiang Lei, Wenxuan Zhang, Wai Lam, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To facilitate conversational question answering (CQA) over hybrid contexts in finance, we present a new dataset, named PACIFIC. Compared with existing CQA datasets, PACIFIC exhibits three key features: (i) proactivity, (ii) numerical reasoning, and (iii) hybrid context of tables and text. A new task is defined accordingly to study Proactive Conversational Question Answering (PCQA), which combines clarification question generation and CQA. In addition, we propose a novel method, namely UniPCQA, to adapt a hybrid format of input and output content in PCQA into the Seq2Seq problem, including the reformulation of the numerical reasoning process as code generation. UniPCQA performs multi-task …

On The Merge Of K-Nn Graph, Wan-Lei Zhao, Hui Wang, Peng-Cheng Lin, Chong-Wah Ngo Dec 2022

On The Merge Of K-Nn Graph, Wan-Lei Zhao, Hui Wang, Peng-Cheng Lin, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

k-nearest neighbor graph is a fundamental data structure in many disciplines such as information retrieval, data-mining, pattern recognition, and machine learning, etc. In the literature, considerable research has been focusing on how to efficiently build an approximate k-nearest neighbor graph (k-NN graph) for a fixed dataset. Unfortunately, a closely related issue of how to merge two existing k-NN graphs has been overlooked. In this paper, we address the issue of k-NN graph merging in two different scenarios. In the first scenario, a symmetric merge algorithm is proposed to combine two approximate k-NN graphs. The algorithm facilitates large-scale processing by the …

Implementation Of Empath X Sla Predictive Tool For A Government Agency, Hui Shan Lee, Shankararaman, Venky, Eng Lieh Ouh Dec 2022

Implementation Of Empath X Sla Predictive Tool For A Government Agency, Hui Shan Lee, Shankararaman, Venky, Eng Lieh Ouh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Service Level Agreement (SLA) plays a significant role in the relationship between citizens and the government. It stipulates the quality levels required for the meaningful interaction between the two parties. Most SLA predictive models consider end-to-end duration and frequency of failed service requests as model inputs with little research on the analysis of textual details of the service request. This is an issue for government bodies as the latter do not just want to meet SLA, but also be proactive by knowing the citizens before assisting them. Inclusion of textual data potentially answer to this requirement of knowing the citizen …

Appearance-Preserved Portrait-To-Anime Translation Via Proxy-Guided Domain Adaptation, Wenpeng Xiao, Cheng Xu, Jiajie Mai, Xuemiao Xu, Yue Li, Chengze Li, Xueting Liu, Shengfeng He Dec 2022

Appearance-Preserved Portrait-To-Anime Translation Via Proxy-Guided Domain Adaptation, Wenpeng Xiao, Cheng Xu, Jiajie Mai, Xuemiao Xu, Yue Li, Chengze Li, Xueting Liu, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Converting a human portrait to anime style is a desirable but challenging problem. Existing methods fail to resolve this problem due to the large inherent gap between two domains that cannot be overcome by a simple direct mapping. For this reason, these methods struggle to preserve the appearance features in the original photo. In this paper, we discover an intermediate domain, the coser portrait (portraits of humans costuming as anime characters), that helps bridge this gap. It alleviates the learning ambiguity and loosens the mapping difficulty in a progressive manner. Specifically, we start from learning the mapping between coser and …

Segment-Wise Time-Varying Dynamic Bayesian Network With Graph Regularization, Xing Yang, Chen Zhang, Baihua Zheng Dec 2022

Segment-Wise Time-Varying Dynamic Bayesian Network With Graph Regularization, Xing Yang, Chen Zhang, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Time-varying dynamic Bayesian network (TVDBN) is essential for describing time-evolving directed conditional dependence structures in complex multivariate systems. In this article, we construct a TVDBN model, together with a score-based method for its structure learning. The model adopts a vector autoregressive (VAR) model to describe inter-slice and intra-slice relations between variables. By allowing VAR parameters to change segment-wisely over time, the time-varying dynamics of the network structure can be described. Furthermore, considering some external information can provide additional similarity information of variables. Graph Laplacian is further imposed to regularize similar nodes to have similar network structures. The regularized maximum a …

A Logistic Regression And Linear Programming Approach For Multi-Skill Staffing Optimization In Call Centers, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai, Fabian Bastin, Pierre L'Ecuyer Dec 2022

A Logistic Regression And Linear Programming Approach For Multi-Skill Staffing Optimization In Call Centers, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai, Fabian Bastin, Pierre L'Ecuyer

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study a staffing optimization problem in multi-skill call centers. The objective is to minimize the total cost of agents under some quality of service (QoS) constraints. The key challenge lies in the fact that the QoS functions have no closed-form and need to be approximated by simulation. In this paper we propose a new way to approximate the QoS functions by logistic functions and design a new algorithm that combines logistic regression, cut generations and logistic-based local search to efficiently find good staffing solutions. We report computational results using examples up to 65 call types and 89 agent groups …
