Chinese Wall Security Policy, Varun Gupta
Chinese Wall Security Policy, Varun Gupta
Master's Projects
This project establishes a Chinese wall security policy model in the environment of cloud computing. In 1988 Brewer and Nash proposed a very nice commercial security policy in British financial world. Though the policy was well accepted, but the model was incorrect. A decade later, Dr. Lin provided a model in 2003 that meets Brewer & Nash’s Policy. One of the important components in Cloud computing is data center. In order for any company to store data in the center, a trustable security policy model is a must; Chinese wall security policy model will provide this assurance. The heart of …

Online Circular Calendar, Praveen Athmanathan Panneerselvam
Master's Projects
A calendar is a system to organize days for social, commercial or administrative purpose. Many calendar systems are available today. The calendar system helps the user in scheduling his/her events or tasks over a time period. This period may be an hour, a day, or even months. Due to increase in user’s activities, events that need to be scheduled in the calendar grow tremendously. Moreover, there are events that occur every year which require a good visualization for mental manipulation. As a result there is a difficulty in organizing these events in the current calendar system. The main idea of …
Triggering Of Just-In-Time Compilation In The Java Virtual Machine, Rouhollah Gougol
Triggering Of Just-In-Time Compilation In The Java Virtual Machine, Rouhollah Gougol
Master's Projects
The Java Virtual Machine (Standard Edition) normally interprets Java byte code but also compiles Java methods that are frequently interpreted and runs them natively. The purpose is to take advantage of native execution without having too much overhead for Just-In-Time compilation. A former SJSU thesis tried to enhance the standard policy by predicting frequently called methods ahead of their actual frequent interpretation. The project also tried to increase the compilation throughput by prioritizing the method compilations, if there is more than one hot method to compile at the same time. The paper claimed significant speedup. In this project, we tried …

Within the past few years video usage has grown in a multi-fold fashion. One of the major reasons for this explosive video growth is the rising Internet bandwidth speeds. As of today, a significant human effort is needed to categorize these video data files. A successful automatic video classification method can substantially help to reduce the growing amount of cluttered video data on the Internet. This research project is based on finding a successful model for video classification. We have utilized various schemes of visual and audio data analysis methods to build a successful classification model. As far as the …
Evaluations And Enhancements In 802.11n Wlans – Error-Sensitive Adaptive Frame Aggregation, Ken Chan
Evaluations And Enhancements In 802.11n Wlans – Error-Sensitive Adaptive Frame Aggregation, Ken Chan
Master's Projects
IEEE 802.11n is a developing next-generation standard for wireless local area network (LAN). Seamless multimedia traffic connection will become possible with the 802.11n improvement in the Physical and MAC layer. The new 802.11n frame aggregation technique is particularly important for enhancing MAC layer efficiency under high speed wireless LAN. Although the frame aggregation can increase the efficiency in the MAC layer, it does not provide good performance in high BER channels when using large frame aggregation size. An Optimal Frame Aggregation (OFA) technique for AMSDU frame under different BERs in 802.11n WLANs was proposed. However, the suggested algorithm does not …

Versatile Extensible Security System For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jung Chang
Master's Projects
Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is becoming more and more popular in scientific, government, and general applications, but security system for MANET is still at infant stage. Currently, there are not many security systems that provide extensive security coverage for MANET. Moreover, most of these security systems assume nodes have infinite computation power and energy; an assumption that is not true for many mobiles. Versatile and Extensible System (VESS) is a powerful and versatile general-purpose security suite that comprises of modified versions of existing encryption and authentication schemes. VESS uses a simple and network-efficient but still reliable authentication scheme. The …
Is Four File Chess A Draw?, Michael Karbushev
Is Four File Chess A Draw?, Michael Karbushev
Master's Projects
In this work, we prove that in the game of FOUR FILE Chess, White has at least a Draw. FOUR FILE is a chess variant proposed by John Selfridge, in which only the `a', `c', `e', and `g' les are used. All chess rules are as usual, except that all moves must end on one of these les, and the game starts with the other four les vacant. Here, we prove that the White has at least a draw, by showing that White has a strategy to avoid a loss. We also show that Black can avoid a loss for …

Knowledge Engineering From Data Perspective: Granular Computing Approach, Rushin Barot
Master's Projects
The concept of rough set theory is a mathematical approach to uncertainly and vagueness in data analysis, introduced by Zdzislaw Pawlak in 1980s. Rough set theory assumes the underlying structure of knowledge is a partition. We have extended Pawlak’s concept of knowledge to coverings. We have taken a soft approach regarding any generalized subset as a basic knowledge. We regard a covering as basic knowledge from which the theory of knowledge approximations and learning, knowledge dependency and reduct are developed.

Heuristic Search Cryptanalysis Of The Zodiac 340 Cipher, Pallavi Kanagalakatte Basavaraju
Master's Projects
The Zodiac 340 cipher is one of the most famous unsolved ciphers of all time. It was allegedly written by “the Zodiac”, whose identity remains unknown to date. The Zodiac was a serial killer who killed a number of people in and around the San Francisco Bay area during the 1960s. He is confirmed to have seven victims, two of whom survived [1], although in taunting letters to the news media he claims to have killed 37 people. During this time, an encrypted message known as the Zodiac 408 cipher was mailed to 3 different newspapers in the San Francisco …

Available Bandwidth Inference Based On Node-Centric Clusters, Seetharam Samptur
Master's Projects
End-to-End Available Bandwidth (AB) is a real-time network metric that is useful for a wide range of applications including content distribution networks, multimedia streaming applications and overlay networks. In a large network with several thousand nodes, it is infeasible to perform all-pair bandwidth measurements as AB measurements could induce traffic overhead along the path. Also because of its dynamic nature, the measurements have to be performed frequently thus imposing significant probe traffic overhead on the network. In this paper, we discuss a clustering based distributed algorithm to infer the AB between any pair of nodes in a large network based …

Master's Projects
A Bibliography is a list of books, publications, journals etc., with details such as authors and references. Visualization could be used as a data analysis tool to represent various types of data, analyze huge chunks of data easily and arrive at interesting results. The idea of this project is to provide a medium which eases the combination of bibliography with visualization. Though there are many sources of bibliographic data like the Digital Bibliography and Library Project (DBLP), Citeseer, Google Scholar, none of these data could be used directly for deducing relations between various entities or for visualizing the relationship between …

Word Sense Disambiguation In Biomedical Ontologies With Term Co-Occurrence Analysis And Document Clustering, Bill Andreopoulos, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Michael Schroeder
Faculty Publications, Computer Science
With more and more genomes being sequenced, a lot of effort is devoted to their annotation with terms from controlled vocabularies such as the GeneOntology. Manual annotation based on relevant literature is tedious, but automation of this process is difficult. One particularly challenging problem is word sense disambiguation. Terms such as |development| can refer to developmental biology or to the more general sense. Here, we present two approaches to address this problem by using term co-occurrences and document clustering. To evaluate our method we defined a corpus of 331 documents on development and developmental biology. Term co-occurrence analysis achieves an …

Unraveling Protein Networks With Power Graph Analysis, Loïc Royer, Matthias Reimann, Bill Andreopoulos, Michael Schroeder
Faculty Publications, Computer Science
Networks play a crucial role in computational biology, yet their analysis and representation is still an open problem. Power Graph Analysis is a lossless transformation of biological networks into a compact, less redundant representation, exploiting the abundance of cliques and bicliques as elementary topological motifs. We demonstrate with five examples the advantages of Power Graph Analysis. Investigating protein-protein interaction networks, we show how the catalytic subunits of the casein kinase II complex are distinguishable from the regulatory subunits, how interaction profiles and sequence phylogeny of SH3 domains correlate, and how false positive interactions among high-throughput interactions are spotted. Additionally, we …

Heuristic Health Resource Referral (H2r2) Engine, Duy Vo
Heuristic Health Resource Referral (H2r2) Engine, Duy Vo
Master's Projects
Searching for health resources is difficult for many individuals because it requires domain knowledge and understanding of search engines techniques. Our system proposes a paradigm shift whereby users provide as much or as little information as they feel comfortable, and we endeavor to match them with relevant health resources. The system first attempts to identify risk factors through a heuristic engine that employs fuzzy logic and then searches for health resources based on the user’s profile. We aim to unburden the user from having to understand complex health information and sometimes esoteric search techniques. Our preliminary findings show that a …
Investigating The Effectiveness Of Active Interaction Tools On Student Learning, Lurie Andrei
Investigating The Effectiveness Of Active Interaction Tools On Student Learning, Lurie Andrei
Master's Projects
In this project, we investigate the effectiveness of active interaction animation tools for learning. We limit our scope to a particular computer science course that teaches graph algorithms on an undergraduate level. More specifically, we evaluate student understanding of basic graph algorithms when two kinds of interactive animation tools are used by the students to learn the algorithms: active interaction and passive interaction. We hypothesize that animations which engage students in active interaction are more effective and more beneficial to learning and comprehension than the animations which do not explicitly engage students in active interaction. We conduct an experiment and …
Towards An Undetectable Computer Virus, Priti Desai
Towards An Undetectable Computer Virus, Priti Desai
Master's Projects
Metamorphic viruses modify their own code to produce viral copies which are syntactically different from their parents. The viral copies have the same functionality as the parent but may have different signatures. This makes signature-based virus scanners unreliable for detecting metamorphic viruses. But statistical pattern analysis tool such as Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) can detect metamorphic viruses. Virus writers use many different code obfuscation techniques to generate metamorphic viruses. In this project we develop a metamorphic engine using code obfuscation techniques. Our metamorphic engine is designed to produce highly diverse morphed copies of the base virus. We show that commercial …

Study Of Tcp Issues Over Wireless And Implementation Of Iscsi Over Wireless For Storage Area Networks, Rahul Sharma
Master's Projects
The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has proved to be proficient in classical wired networks, presenting an ability to acclimatize to modern, high-speed networks and present new scenarios for which it was not formerly designed. Wireless access to the Internet requires that information reliability be reserved while data is transmitted over the radio channel. Automatic repeat request (ARQ) schemes and TCP techniques are often used for error-control at the link layer and at the transport layer, respectively. TCP/IP is becoming a communication standard [1]. Initially it was designed to present reliable transmission over IP protocol operating principally in wired networks. Wireless …
Practical Detection Of Metamorphic Computer Viruses, Sharmidha Govindaraj
Practical Detection Of Metamorphic Computer Viruses, Sharmidha Govindaraj
Master's Projects
Metamorphic virus employs code obfuscation techniques to mutate itself. It absconds from signature-based detection system by modifying internal structure without compromising original functionality. However, it has been proved that machine learning technique like Hidden Markov model (HMM) can detect such viruses with high probability. HMM is a state machine where each state observes the input data with appropriate observation probability. HMM learns statistical properties of “virus features” rather than “signatures” and relies on such statistics to detect same family virus. Each HMM is trained with variants of same family viruses that are generated by same metamorphic engine so that HMM …

Attacks such as spamming, distributed denial of service and phishing have become commonplace on the Internet. In the past, attackers would use high bandwidth Internet connection servers to accomplish their tasks. Since desktop users today have high-speed Internet connections, attackers infect users’ desktops and harness their computing power to perform malicious activities over the Internet. As attackers develop new methods to attack from distributed locations as well as avoid being detected, there is a need to develop efficient methods to detect and mitigate this epidemic of infection of hosts on the network. In this project, we aim to analyze the …

Intelligent Query For Real Estate Search, Mandeep Jandir
Master's Projects
The purpose of this project is to improve search query accuracy in a real estate website by developing an intelligent query system which provides the best matching result for standard search criteria. This intelligent query website utilizes fuzzy logic and partial membership to filter query results based on user input data. Fuzzy logic helps obtain results that are otherwise not attainable from a non-fuzzy search. A non-fuzzy search entails search results that match exactly with the given criteria. This project also allows a user to do a free keyword search. This type of search uses synonyms of the keywords to …

The release of Apple’s iPhone was one of the most intensively publicized product releases in the history of mobile devices. While the iPhone wowed users with its exciting design and features, it also outraged many for not allowing installation of third party applications and for working exclusively with AT&T wireless services for the first two years. Software attacks have been developed to get around both limitations. The development of those attacks and further evaluation revealed several vulnerabilities in iPhone security. In this paper, we examine several of the attacks developed for the iPhone as a way of investigating the iPhone’s …
