Distributed Digital Forensics On Pre-Existing Internal Networks, Jeremiah Jens Nielsen
Open Access Theses
Today's large datasets are a major hindrance on digital investigations and have led to a substantial backlog of media that must be examined. While this media sits idle, its relevant investigation must sit idle inducing investigative time lag. This study created a client/server application architecture that operated on an existing pool of internally networked Windows 7 machines. This distributed digital forensic approach helps to address scalability concerns with other approaches while also being financially feasible. Text search runtimes and match counts were evaluated using several scenarios including a 100 GB image with prefabricated data. When compared to FTK 4.1, a …

Text-Based Phishing Detection Using A Simulation Model, Gilchan Park
Open Access Theses
Phishing is one of the most potentially disruptive actions that can be performed on the Internet. Intellectual property and other pertinent business information could potentially be at risk if a user falls for a phishing attack. The most common way of carrying out a phishing attack is through email. The adversary sends an email with a link to a fraudulent site to lure consumers into divulging their confidential information. While such attacks may be easily identifiable for those well-versed in technology, it may be difficult for the typical Internet user to spot a fraudulent email.
The emphasis of this research …

Information Measures For Statistical Orbit Determination, Alinda Kenyana Mashiku
Information Measures For Statistical Orbit Determination, Alinda Kenyana Mashiku
Open Access Dissertations
The current Situational Space Awareness (SSA) is faced with a huge task of tracking the increasing number of space objects. The tracking of space objects requires frequent and accurate monitoring for orbit maintenance and collision avoidance using methods for statistical orbit determination. Statistical orbit determination enables us to obtain estimates of the state and the statistical information of its region of uncertainty given by the probability density function (PDF). As even collision events with very low probability are important, accurate prediction of collisions require the representation of the full PDF of the random orbit state. Through representing the full PDF …
User Assisted Tree Reconstruction From Point Clouds, William P. Leavenworth Ii
User Assisted Tree Reconstruction From Point Clouds, William P. Leavenworth Ii
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
LIDAR is a useful tool for quickly digitalizing real world objects, but it usually takes some effort to produce a recognizable object from the raw input. When the object is a tree, the challenge is to create a three‐dimensional model that represents its general shape, while avoiding the influence of undersampling and noise. In the method developed for this research, the user creates a sketch overlaying a display of the raw input data. Each node in the sketch creates an estimated slice of the tree skeleton at that point, and the slices are connected according to the connectivity of the …

Matching Phosphorylation Response Patterns Of Antigen-Receptor-Stimulated T Cells Via Flow Cytometry, Ariful Azad, Saumyadipta Pyne, Alex Pothen
Department of Computer Science Faculty Publications
Background
When flow cytometric data on mixtures of cell populations are collected from samples under different experimental conditions, computational methods are needed (a) to classify the samples into similar groups, and (b) to characterize the changes within the corresponding populations due to the different conditions. Manual inspection has been used in the past to study such changes, but high-dimensional experiments necessitate developing new computational approaches to this problem. A robust solution to this problem is to construct distinct templates to summarize all samples from a class, and then to compare these templates to study the changes across classes or conditions. …
Two Approximate Minkowski Sum Algorithms, Victor Milenkovic, Elisha P. Sacks
Two Approximate Minkowski Sum Algorithms, Victor Milenkovic, Elisha P. Sacks
Department of Computer Science Faculty Publications
We present two approximate Minkowski sum algorithms for planar regions bounded by line and circle segments. Both algorithms form a convolution curve, construct its arrangement, and use winding numbers to identify sum cells. The first uses the kinetic convolution and the second uses our monotonic convolution. The asymptotic running times of the exact algorithms are increased by kmlogm with m the number of segments in the convolution and with k the number of segment triples that are in cyclic vertical order due to approximate segment intersection. The approximate Minkowski sum is close to the exact sum of perturbation regions that …

Visual Learning Styles Among Digital Natives, Eric Palmer
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
This study explored the concept of digital nativity and its educational implications, including application of the learning styles hypothesis. The concept of digital natives, first put forth by Marc Prensky, introduced the notion that individuals raised in a technological environment have developed in such a way as to utilize information differently than the non-native generations before them. This study examined the possibility that these differences may include an increased efficiency in the utilization of narrative imagery versus textual information. The potential benefit of utilizing narrative imagery as an instructional tool is discussed. An experimental test application was developed for the …
Controlled Linear Perturbation, Elisha P. Sacks, Victor Milenkovic, Min-Ho Kyung
Controlled Linear Perturbation, Elisha P. Sacks, Victor Milenkovic, Min-Ho Kyung
Department of Computer Science Faculty Publications
We present an algorithmic solution to the robustness problem in computational geometry, called controlled linear perturbation, and demonstrate it on Minkowski sums of polyhedra. The robustness problem is how to implement real RAM algorithms accurately and efficiently using computer arithmetic. Approximate computation in floating point arithmetic is efficient but can assign incorrect signs to geometric predicates, which can cause combinatorial errors in the algorithm output. We make approximate computation accurate by performing small input perturbations, which we compute using differential calculus. This strategy supports fast, accurate Minkowski sum computation. The only prior robust implementation uses a less efficient algorithm, requires …

As data sources become larger and more complex, the ability to effectively explore and analyze patterns amongst varying sources becomes a critical bottleneck in analytic reasoning. Incoming data contains multiple variables, high signal to noise ratio, and a degree of uncertainty, all of which hinder exploration, hypothesis eneration/exploration, and decision making. To facilitate the exploration of such data, advanced tool sets are needed that allow the user to interact with their data in a visual environment that provides direct analytic capability for finding data aberrations or hotspots. In this paper, we present a suite of tools designed to facilitate the …

Protein-Protein Docking Using Region-Based 3d Zernike Descriptors., Vishwesh Venkatraman, Yifeng D. Yang, Lee Sael, Daisuke Kihara
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Background
Protein-protein interactions are a pivotal component of many biological processes and mediate a variety of functions. Knowing the tertiary structure of a protein complex is therefore essential for understanding the interaction mechanism. However, experimental techniques to solve the structure of the complex are often found to be difficult. To this end, computational protein-protein docking approaches can provide a useful alternative to address this issue. Prediction of docking conformations relies on methods that effectively capture shape features of the participating proteins while giving due consideration to conformational changes that may occur.
Results
We present a novel protein docking algorithm based …
