The Basic Dualism In The World: Object-Oriented Ontology And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick Aug 2024

The Basic Dualism In The World: Object-Oriented Ontology And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Graham Harman writes that the “basic dualism in the world lies…between things in their intimate reality and things as confronted by other things.” However, dualism implies irreconcilable difference; what Harman points to is better expressed as a dyad, where the two components imply one another and interact. This article shows that systems theory has long asserted the fundamental character of Harman’s dyad, expressing it as the union of internal structure and external function, which correspond exactly to what Levi Bryant, characterizing Harman’s views, refers to as the intra-ontic and the inter-ontic, respectively. After interpreting Harman’s dyad in terms of the …

Lazy evaluation is a powerful tool that enables better compositionality and potentially better performance in functional programming, but it is challenging to analyze its computation cost. Existing works either require manually annotating sharing, or rely on separation logic to reason about heaps of mutable cells. In this paper, we propose a bidirectional demand semantics that allows for extrinsic reasoning about the computation cost of lazy programs without relying on special program logics. To show the effectiveness of our approach, we apply the demand semantics to a variety of case studies including insertion sort, selection sort, Okasaki's banker's queue, and the …

The Institutional Challenges Of A Quantified Self Study: An Attempt To Ascertain How Data Collected From A Mobile Device Can Be An Indicator Of Personal Mental Health Over Time, Julian Lazaras

University Honors Theses

The adoption of an application of new technology always comes with a bias, this is never more true for the case of human behavioral analytics within higher education. While movements such as the quantified self movement make strides to reinterpret the realm of data analytics, psychology, and computer science, there are inevitably limitations to the adoption and application of such approaches within the standard realm of research. Herein is presented a case where an effort to evaluate the prospect of use of mobile phone data as secondary indicators of personal mental health through the lens of data analysis was put …

Cards With Class: Formalizing A Simplified Collectible Card Game, Dan Ha Jun 2024

Cards With Class: Formalizing A Simplified Collectible Card Game, Dan Ha

University Honors Theses

Collectible card games (CCGs) have been a wildly popular game genre since the release of Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering. These games revolve around their thousands of cards and the hundreds of thousands of interactions they can create with their many effects. For designers, it is an incredibly demanding task to ensure that every single card works properly and that each card's text unambiguously conveys its intended behavior in all cases. The task only grows more difficult over time as the number of cards in the game grows and card effects become more complex or experimental. If the …

These recent strides made in the field of artificial intelligence reveal that the pace of technological development has outstripped the rate at which we are able to politically examine and understand these …

Resource-Constrained 2d Scene Recovery With Single-Photon Cameras, Daphne Ariadne Kurzenhauser Jun 2024

Resource-Constrained 2d Scene Recovery With Single-Photon Cameras, Daphne Ariadne Kurzenhauser

Dissertations and Theses

The modern world is built of images. However, in our goal to photograph and replicate what the human eye is capable of seeing, we are throttled by the restrictions of conventional imaging sensors in high- and low-illumination environments. Single-photon cameras (SPCs) have recently emerged as a promising alternative to conventional camera sensors for capturing images in challenging conditions such as high-dynamic range and fast scene motion. Compared to traditional CMOS cameras, SPCs exploit the arrival of individual photons rather than using an aggregate photon count to compute the brightness of pixels. However, SPCs are extremely resource-intensive, making them inconvenient for …

On Coresets For Fair Clustering In Metric And Euclidean Spaces And Their Applications, Sayan Bandyapadhyay, Fedor V. Fomin, Kirill Simonov Jun 2024

On Coresets For Fair Clustering In Metric And Euclidean Spaces And Their Applications, Sayan Bandyapadhyay, Fedor V. Fomin, Kirill Simonov

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fair clustering is a constrained clustering problem where we need to partition a set of colored points. The fraction of points of each color in every cluster should be more or less equal to the fraction of points of this color in the dataset. The problem was recently introduced by Chierichetti et al. (2017) [1]. We propose a new construction of coresets for fair clustering for Euclidean and general metrics based on random sampling. For the Euclidean space Rd, we provide the first coreset whose size does not depend exponentially on the dimension d. The question of whether such constructions …

Enhancing Robustness Of Machine Learning Models Against Adversarial Attacks, Ronak Guliani Jun 2024

Enhancing Robustness Of Machine Learning Models Against Adversarial Attacks, Ronak Guliani

University Honors Theses

Machine learning models are integral for numerous applications, but they remain increasingly vulnerable to adversarial attacks. These attacks involve subtle manipulation of input data to deceive models, presenting a critical threat to their dependability and security. This thesis addresses the need for strengthening these models against such adversarial attacks. Prior research has primarily focused on identifying specific types of adversarial attacks on a limited range of ML algorithms. However, there is a gap in the evaluation of model resilience across algorithms and in the development of effective defense mechanisms. To bridge this gap, this work adopts a two-phase approach. First, …

Automatic Measurement Of Dialogue Engagingness In Multilingual Settings, Amila Ferron May 2024

Automatic Measurement Of Dialogue Engagingness In Multilingual Settings, Amila Ferron

Dissertations and Theses

Expansive use of large language models (LLMs) as dialogue systems brings increased importance to the evaluation of the responses they generate. Although evaluation of qualities such as coherence and fluency are readily possible with well-established automatic metrics, engagingness is often measured with human evaluation -- a process that can be costly and slows the pace of development. Existing automatic metrics for engagingness have low to moderate correlation with human annotations, evaluate the response without the conversation history, are complicated to implement, or are designed for a specific dataset. Moreover, they have been tested exclusively on English conversations. Given that dialogue …

A Systems Theoretic View Of Speculative Realism, Martin Zwick May 2024

A Systems Theoretic View Of Speculative Realism, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent developments in Continental philosophy have included the emergence of a school of “speculative realism,” which rejects the human-centered orientation that has long dominated Continental thought. Proponents of speculative realism differ on several issues, but many agree on the need for an object-oriented ontology. Some speculative realists identify realism with materialism, while others accord equal reality to objects that are non-material, even fictional. Several thinkers retain a focus on difference, a well-established theme in Continental thought. This paper looks at speculative realism from the perspective of systems theory. Many of the tenets of speculative realism have long been features of …

A Deep Learning Framework For Blockage Mitigation In Mmwave Wireless, Ahmed Hazaa Almutairi May 2024

A Deep Learning Framework For Blockage Mitigation In Mmwave Wireless, Ahmed Hazaa Almutairi

Dissertations and Theses

Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) communication is a key technology to enable next generation wireless systems. However, mmWave systems are highly susceptible to blockages, which can lead to a substantial decrease in signal strength at the receiver. Identifying blockages and mitigating them is thus a key challenge to achieve next generation wireless technology goals, such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communication (URLLC). This thesis proposes several deep learning (DL) frameworks for mmWave wireless blockage detection, mitigation, and duration prediction. First, we propose a DL framework to address the problem of identifying whether the mmWave wireless channel between two devices …

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

When multiple users adopt collaborative cloud services like Google Drive to work on a shared resource, incorrect or missing permis- sions may cause conflicting or inconsistent access or use privileges. These issues (or conflicts) compromise resources confidentiality, integrity, or availability leading to a lack of trust in cloud services. An example conflict is when a user with editor permissions changes the permissions on a shared resource without consent from the orig- inal resource owner. In this demonstration, we introduce ACCORD, a web application built on top of Google Drive able to detect and resolve multi-user conflicts. ACCORD employs a simulator …

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

As the market increases for Artificial Intelligence and High-Performance Computing applications, the geometry of 3-Dimensional Integrated Circuit packages becomes more complicated; therefore, predicting the thermal distributions of the structures becomes not only more important but also more challenging. The physics governing the thermal distribution is a 3-dimensional partial differential equation. In order to predict the thermal distributions, various approaches such as the layer modeling method have been invented. While practical, these approaches solve a simplified version of the differential equation placing an inherent limitation on their capabilities which may be improved upon. In this research we solve the actual differential …

Static Reflective Surfaces For Improved Terahertz Coverage, Thanh Le, Suresh Singh May 2024

Static Reflective Surfaces For Improved Terahertz Coverage, Thanh Le, Suresh Singh

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

LoS (Line of Sight) MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) is considered the best way to deliver high capacity channels for terahertz communications due to the severe attenuation suffered by reflected components. Unfortunately, terahertz links are easily blocked by any obstruction resulting in link breakage. Therefore, it is necessary to provide alternative paths via reflectors. A problem shared by LoS paths and reflected paths (via polished reflectors) is that the channel matrix is rank 1 in the far-field. As a result, the achieved capacity is lower than what can theoretically be achieved in a rich multi-path environment. In this work, we …
