Evaluation Of Supervised Machine Learning For Classifying Video Traffic, Farrell R. Taylor
Evaluation Of Supervised Machine Learning For Classifying Video Traffic, Farrell R. Taylor
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Operational deployment of machine learning based classifiers in real-world networks has become an important area of research to support automated real-time quality of service decisions by Internet service providers (ISPs) and more generally, network administrators. As the Internet has evolved, multimedia applications, such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), gaming, and video streaming, have become commonplace. These traffic types are sensitive to network perturbations, e.g. jitter and delay. Automated quality of service (QoS) capabilities offer a degree of relief by prioritizing network traffic without human intervention; however, they rely on the integration of real-time traffic classification to identify applications. Accordingly, …

Using Diversity Ensembles With Time Limits To Handle Concept Drift, Robert M. Van Camp
Using Diversity Ensembles With Time Limits To Handle Concept Drift, Robert M. Van Camp
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
While traditional supervised learning focuses on static datasets, an increasing amount of data comes in the form of streams, where data is continuous and typically processed only once. A common problem with data streams is that the underlying concept we are trying to learn can be constantly evolving. This concept drift has been of interest to researchers the last few years and there is a need for improved machine learning algorithms that are capable of dealing with concept drifts. A promising approach involves using an ensemble of a diverse set of classifiers. The constituent classifiers are re-trained when a concept …

Flexible Gating Of Contextual Influences In Natural Vision, Odelia Schwartz
Flexible Gating Of Contextual Influences In Natural Vision, Odelia Schwartz
Mathematics Colloquium Series
An appealing hypothesis suggests that neurons represent inputs in a coordinate system that is matched to the statistical structure of images in the natural environment. I discuss theoretical work on unsupervised learning of statistical regularities in natural images. In the model, Bayesian inference amounts to a generalized form of divisive normalization, a canonical computation that has been implicated in many neural areas. In our framework, divisive normalization is flexible: it is recruited only when the image is inferred to contain dependencies, and muted otherwise. I particularly focus on recent work in which we have applied this approach to understanding spatial …

When face-to-face physical medical exams are not possible, virtual physical exams, in the form of a pictorial medical exam/history, can be substituted, and telemedicine can be the means to deliver these virtual exams. The goal of this work was to determine if presence in the form of a visual and/or pictorial medical history can be of benefit to clinicians in the diagnosis of medical conditions of individuals with developmental disabilities (DDs) and/or intellectual disabilities (IDs), in particular those who cannot, because of their cognitive and/or physical disabilities, verbally relate their illness to a clinician. Virtual exams can also be useful …
Efficient Variations Of The Quality Threshold Clustering Algorithm, Frank Loforte Jr.
Efficient Variations Of The Quality Threshold Clustering Algorithm, Frank Loforte Jr.
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Clustering gene expression data such that the diameters of the clusters formed are no greater than a specified threshold prompted the development of the Quality Threshold Clustering (QTC) algorithm. It iteratively forms clusters of non-increasing size until all points are clustered; the largest cluster is always selected first. The QTC algorithm applies in many other domains that require a similar quality guarantee based on cluster diameter. The worst-case complexity of the original QTC algorithm is (n5). Since practical applications often involve large datasets, researchers called for more efficient versions of the QTC algorithm.
This dissertation aimed to develop …
