Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The O + O2 isotope exchange reactions play an important role in determining the oxygen isotopic composition of a number of trace gases in the atmosphere, and their temperature dependence and kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) provide important constraints on our understanding of the origin and mechanism of these and other unusual oxygen KIEs important in the atmosphere. This work reports a quantum dynamics study of the title reactions on the newly constructed Dawes-Lolur-Li-Jiang-Guo (DLLJG) potential energy surface (PES). The thermal reaction rate coefficients of both the 18O + 32O2 and 16O + 36O2 reactions obtained using the …

Privacy-Aware Access Control For Message Exchange In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Sushama Karumanchi, Anna Squicciarini, Dan Lin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vehicular ad hoc networks are a promising and increasingly important paradigm. Their applications range from safety enhancement to mobile entertainment services. However, their deployment requires several security issues to be resolved, particularly, since they rely on insecure wireless communication. In this paper, we propose a cryptographic-based access control framework for vehicles to securely exchange messages in a controlled fashion by integrating moving object modeling techniques with cryptographic policies. To our knowledge, this is the first time a comprehensive framework for access control in VANETs is proposed.

Classical Description Of H(1s) And H* (N=2) For Cross-Section Calculations Relevant To Charge-Exchange Diagnostics, N. D. Cariatore, Sebastian Otranto, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we introduce a classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) methodology, specially conceived to provide a more accurate representation of charge-exchange processes between highly charged ions and H(1s) and H* (n=2). These processes are of particular relevance in power fusion reactor programs, for which charge-exchange spectroscopy has become a useful plasma diagnostics tool. To test the methodology, electron-capture reactions from these targets by C6+,N7+, and O8+ are studied at impact energies in the 10-150keV/amu range. State-selective cross sections are contrasted with those predicted by the standard microcanonical formulation of the CTMC method, the CTMC …

Fall: A Fair And Low Latency Queuing Scheme For Data Center Networks, Lin Xue, Chui Hui Chiu, Suman Kumar, Praveenkumar Kondikoppa, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Low latency, high throughput, and fairness are the stringent performance requirements of data center networks. For web applications continue to thrive, data center must remain effective by addressing these challenges. While most of the challenges have been handled by data center specific transport protocols (e.g. DCTCP), these transport protocols are not default options for data center users. Free choice of transport protocols demands careful consideration for an effective solution. We argue that queuing scheme at layer-2 switches hold the key to address these issues. Therefore, in this paper, we present FaLL, a queuing scheme for data center networks that meets …

A Study Of Decision Process In Mcdm Problems With Large Number Of Criteria, Jian Liu, Peng Liu, Si Feng Liu, Xian Zhong Zhou, Tao Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, an effective decision process method is proposed to address the challenge in a multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem because of large number of criteria. This method is based on the criteria reduction, tolerance relation, and prospect theory (PT). By building a discernibility matrix for tolerance relation (DMTR) in an MCDM problem with numerical values or interval numbers, this method first allows us to recognize a set of critical criteria from a large criteria pool and ignore the other criteria. Next, it establishes the criteria weights through the DMTR as they are usually not indicated in the data. …

A Systematic Comparison Of The Transverse Energy Minimization And Splitting Intensity Techniques For Measuring Shear-Wave Splitting Parameters, Fansheng Kong, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the past several decades, shear-wave splitting (SWS) analyses have been increasingly utilized to delineate mantle structure and probe mantle dynamics. However, the reported splitting parameters (fast polarization orientations and splitting times) are frequently inconsistent among different studies, partially due to the different techniques used to estimate the splitting parameters. Here, we report results from a systematic comparison of the transverse minimization (TM) and the splitting intensity (SI) techniques. The study was motivated by the fact that recent comparative studies led to conflicting conclusions, which include the suggestion that TM, which is arguably the most widely used SWS-measuring technique, performs …

State-To-State Reaction Dynamics Of ¹⁸O+³²O₂ Studied By A Time-Dependent Quantum Wavepacket Method, Wenbo Xie, Lan Liu, Zhigang Sun, Hua Guo, Richard Dawes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The title isotope exchange reaction was studied by converged time-dependent wave packet calculations, where an efficient 4th order split operator was applied to propagate the initial wave packet. State-to-state differential and integral cross sections up to the collision energy of 0.35 eV were obtained with 32O2 in the hypothetical j0 = 0 state. It is discovered that the differential cross sections are largely forward biased in the studied collision energy range, due to the fact that there is a considerable part of the reaction occurring with large impact parameter and short lifetime relative to the rotational period …

With the increasing volume of images users share through social sites, maintaining privacy has become a major problem, as demonstrated by a recent wave of publicized incidents where users inadvertently shared personal information. In light of these incidents, the need of tools to help users control access to their shared content is apparent. Toward addressing this need, we propose an Adaptive Privacy Policy Prediction (A3P) system to help users compose privacy settings for their images. We examine the role of social context, image content, and metadata as possible indicators of users' privacy preferences. We propose a two-level framework which according …

Elastic Personalized Nonfunctional Attribute Preference And Trade-Off Based Service Selection, Kenneth K. Fletcher, Xiaoqing F. Liu, Mingdong Tang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

For service users to get the best service that meet their requirements, they prefer to personalize their nonfunctional attributes, such as reliability and price. However, the personalization makes it challenging for service providers to completely meet users' preferences, because they have to deal with conflicting nonfunctional attributes when selecting services for users. With this in mind, users may sometimes want to explicitly specify their trade-offs among nonfunctional attributes to make their preferences known to service providers. In this article, we present a novel service selection method based on fuzzy logic that considers users' personalized preferences and their trade-offs on nonfunctional …

Privacy-Preserving Power Usage Control In Smart Grids, Huchun Jan 2015

Privacy-Preserving Power Usage Control In Smart Grids, Huchun

Doctoral Dissertations

"The smart grid (SG) has been emerging as the next-generation intelligent power grid system because of its ability to efficiently monitor, predicate, and control energy generation, transmission, and consumption by analyzing users' real-time electricity information. Consider a situation in which the utility company would like to smartly protect against a power outage. To do so, the company can determine a threshold for a neighborhood. Whenever the total power usage from the neighborhood exceeds the threshold, some or all of the households need to reduce their energy consumption to avoid the possibility of a power outage. This problem is referred to …

A Domain Decomposition Method For The Steady-State Navier-Stokes-Darcy Model With Beavers-Joseph Interface Condition, Xiaoming He, Jian Li, Yanping Lin, Ju Ming

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes and analyzes a Robin-type multiphysics domain decomposition method (DDM) for the steady-state Navier-Stokes-Darcy model with three interface conditions. In addition to the two regular interface conditions for the mass conservation and the force balance, the Beavers-Joseph condition is used as the interface condition in the tangential direction. The major mathematical difficulty in adopting the Beavers-Joseph condition is that it creates an indefinite leading order contribution to the total energy budget of the system [Y. Cao et al., Comm. Math. Sci., 8 (2010), pp. 1-25; Y. Cao et al., SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 47 (2010), pp. 4239-4256]. In …

Composition-Dependent Structural And Transport Properties Of Amorphous Transparent Conducting Oxides, Rabi Khanal, D. Bruce Buchholz, Robert P. Chang, Julia E. Medvedeva

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Structural properties of amorphous In-based oxides, In-X-O with X=Zn, Ga, Sn, or Ge, are investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics liquid-quench simulations. The results reveal that indium retains its average coordination of 5.0 upon 20% X fractional substitution for In, whereas X cations satisfy their natural coordination with oxygen atoms. This finding suggests that the carrier generation is primarily governed by In atoms, in accord with the observed carrier concentration in amorphous In-O and In-X-O. At the same time, the presence of X affects the number of six-coordinated In atoms as well as the oxygen sharing between the InO6 …

Computational Discovery Of Lanthanide Doped And Co-Doped Y₃Al₅O₁₂ For Optoelectronic Applications, Kamal Kumar Choudhary, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Kiran Mathew, Eric W. Bucholz, Simon R. Phillpot, Susan Sinnott, Richard G. Hennig

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We systematically elucidate the optoelectronic properties of rare-earth doped and Ce co-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) using hybrid exchange-correlation functional based density functional theory. The predicted optical transitions agree with the experimental observations for single doped Ce:YAG, Pr:YAG, and co-doped Er,Ce:YAG. We find that co-doping of Ce-doped YAG with any lanthanide except Eu and Lu lowers the transition energies; we attribute this behavior to the lanthanide-induced change in bonding environment of the dopant atoms. Furthermore, we find infrared transitions only in case of the Er, Tb, and Tm co-doped Ce:YAG and suggest Tm,Ce:YAG and Tb,Ce:YAG as possible functional materials for …

The He(i) photoelectron spectrum of furfural has been investigated, with its vibrational structure assigned for the first time. The ground and excited ionized states are assigned through ab initio calculations performed at the outer-valence Green's function level. Triple differential cross sections (TDCSs) for electron-impact ionization of the unresolved combination of the 4a" + 21a' highest and next-highest occupied molecular orbitals have also been obtained. Experimental TDCSs are recorded in a combination of asymmetric coplanar and doubly symmetric coplanar kinematics. The experimental TDCSs are compared to theoretical calculations, obtained within a molecular 3-body distorted wave framework that employed either an orientation …

Dynamic Phases, Pinning, And Pattern Formation For Driven Dislocation Assemblies, Caizhi Zhou, Charles Reichhardt, Cynthia Olson Reichhardt, Irene J. Beyerlein

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We examine driven dislocation assemblies and show that they can exhibit a set of dynamical phases remarkably similar to those of driven systems with quenched disorder such as vortices in superconductors, magnetic domain walls, and charge density wave materials. These phases include pinned-jammed, fluctuating, and dynamically ordered states, and each produces distinct dislocation patterns as well as specific features in the noise fluctuations and transport properties. Our work suggests that many of the results established for systems with quenched disorder undergoing plastic depinning transitions can be applied to dislocation systems, providing a new approach for understanding pattern formation and dynamics …

Boron Nitride Colloidal Solutions, Ultralight Aerogels And Freestanding Membranes Through One-Step Exfoliation And Functionalization, Weiwei Lei, Vadym Mochalin, Dan Liu, Si Qin, Yury G. Gogotsi, Ying Chen

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Manufacturing of aerogels and membranes from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is much more difficult than from graphene or graphene oxides because of the poor dispersibility of h-BN in water, which limits its exfoliation and preparation of colloidal solutions. Here, a simple, one-step mechano-chemical process to exfoliate and functionalize h-BN into highly water-dispersible, few-layer h-BN containing amino groups is presented. The colloidal solutions of few-layer h-BN can have unprecedentedly high concentrations, up to 30 mg ml-1, and are stable for up to several months. They can be used to produce ultralight aerogels with a density of 1.4 mg cm …

Dependability Analysis And Recovery Support For Smart Grids, Isam Abdulmunem Alobaidi Jan 2015

Dependability Analysis And Recovery Support For Smart Grids, Isam Abdulmunem Alobaidi

Masters Theses

"The increasing scale and complexity of power grids exacerbate concerns about failure propagation. A single contingency, such as outage of a transmission line due to overload or weather-related damage, can cause cascading failures that manifest as blackouts. One objective of smart grids is to reduce the likelihood of cascading failure through the use of power electronics devices that can prevent, isolate, and mitigate the effects of faults. Given that these devices are themselves prone to failure, we seek to quantify the effects of their use on dependability attributes of smart grid. This thesis articulates analytical methods for analyzing two dependability …

Information Fusion Architectures For Security And Resource Management In Cyber Physical Systems, Brijesh Kashyap Chejerla Jan 2015

Information Fusion Architectures For Security And Resource Management In Cyber Physical Systems, Brijesh Kashyap Chejerla

Doctoral Dissertations

"Data acquisition through sensors is very crucial in determining the operability of the observed physical entity. Cyber Physical Systems (CPSs) are an example of distributed systems where sensors embedded into the physical system are used in sensing and data acquisition. CPSs are a collaboration between the physical and the computational cyber components. The control decisions sent back to the actuators on the physical components from the computational cyber components closes the feedback loop of the CPS. Since, this feedback is solely based on the data collected through the embedded sensors, information acquisition from the data plays an extremely vital role …
