A Pilot Study In An Application Of Text Mining To Learning System Evaluation, Nitsawan Katerattanakul
Masters Theses
"Text mining concerns discovering and extracting knowledge from unstructured data. It transforms textual data into a usable, intelligible format that facilitates classifying documents, finding explicit relationships or associations between documents, and clustering documents into categories. Given a collection of survey comments evaluating the civil engineering learning system, text mining technique is applied to discover and extract knowledge from the comments. This research focuses on the study of a systematic way to apply a software tool, SAS Enterprise Miner, to the survey data. The purpose is to categorize the comments into different groups in an attempt to identify "major" concerns from …
An Artificial Life Approach To Evolutionary Computation: From Mobile Cellular Algorithms To Artificial Ecosystems, Shivakar Vulli
An Artificial Life Approach To Evolutionary Computation: From Mobile Cellular Algorithms To Artificial Ecosystems, Shivakar Vulli
Masters Theses
"This thesis presents a new class of evolutionary algorithms called mobile cellular evolutionary algorithms (mcEAs). These algorithms are characterized by individuals moving around on a spatial population structure. As a primary objective, this thesis aims to show that by controlling the population density and mobility in mcEAs, it is possible to achieve much better control over the rate of convergence than what is already possible in existing cellular EAs. Using the observations and results from this investigation into selection pressure in mcEAs, a general architecture for developing agent-based evolutionary algorithms called Artificial Ecosystems (AES) is presented. A simple agent-based EA …
Minimize End-To-End Delay Through Cross-Layer Optimization In Multi-Hop Wireless Sensor Networks, Yibo Xu
Minimize End-To-End Delay Through Cross-Layer Optimization In Multi-Hop Wireless Sensor Networks, Yibo Xu
Masters Theses
"End-to-end delay plays a very important role in wireless sensor networks. It refers to the total time taken for a single packet to be transmitted across a network from source to destination. There are many factors could affect the end-to-end delay, among them the routing path and the interference level along the path are the two basic elements that could have significant influence on the result of the end-to-end delay. This thesis presents a transmission scheduling scheme that minimizes the end-to-end delay when the node topology is given. The transmission scheduling scheme is designed based on integer linear programming and …

Cloud Security Requirements Analysis And Security Policy Development Using A High-Order Object-Oriented Modeling Technique, Kenneth Kofi Fletcher
Masters Theses
"Security continues to be a major challenge for cloud computing, and it is one that must be addressed if cloud computing is to be fully accepted. Most technological means of securing non-cloud computing systems can be either applied directly or modified to secure a cloud; however, no integrated model-based methodology is yet available to analyze cloud security requirements and develop policy to deal with both internal and external security challenges. This work proposes just such a methodology and demonstrates its application with specific cases. Cloud assets are represented by high order object models, and misuse cases together with malactivity swimlane …
Event Detection From Click-Through Data Via Query Clustering, Prabhu Kumar Angajala
Event Detection From Click-Through Data Via Query Clustering, Prabhu Kumar Angajala
Masters Theses
"The web is an index of real-world events and lot of knowledge can be mined from the web resources and their derivatives. Event detection is one recent research topic triggered from the domain of web data mining with the increasing popularity of search engines. In the visitor-centric approach, the click-through data generated by the web search engines is the start up resource with the intuition: often such data is event-driven. In this thesis, a retrospective algorithm is proposed to detect such real-world events from the click-through data. This approach differs from the existing work as it: (i) considers the click-through …
Population Control In Evolutionary Algorithms, Jason Edward Cook
Population Control In Evolutionary Algorithms, Jason Edward Cook
Masters Theses
"Traditional evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are powerful robust problem solvers that have several fixed parameters which require prior specification. Having to determine good values for any of these parameters can be problematic, as the performance of EAs is generally very sensitive to these parameters, requiring expert knowledge to set optimally without extensive use of trial and error. Parameter control is a promising approach to achieving this automation and has the added potential of increasing EA performance based on both theoretical and empirical evidence that the optimal values of EA strategy parameters change during the course of executing an evolutionary run. While …
Multi Axis Slicing For Rapid Prototyping, Divya Kanakanala
Multi Axis Slicing For Rapid Prototyping, Divya Kanakanala
Masters Theses
"With multi-axis capability, direct laser deposition process can produce a metal part without the usage of support structures. In order to fully utilize such a capability, a slicing method for multi-axis metal deposition process is discussed. Using the geometry information of adjacent layers, the slicing direction and layer thickness can be changed as needed. A hierarchy structure is designed to manage the topological information which is used to determine the slicing sequence. The parallel slicing process is studied to build hollow type structure. With such a character, the hole like feature can be deposited directly to save the required machining …

Dynamic Ant Colony Optimization For Globally Optimizing Consumer Preferences, Pavitra Dhruvanarayana
Masters Theses
"Consumer preference for any product or product feature can be expressed in the form of a utility function. Many such utility functions form a part of a preference map, where each of these are expressed in terms of the attributes defining the product or the product feature. In order to optimize the design, it is required to optimize the overall utility function obtained by a mathematical combination of individual utility functions defined in the preference map. The objective of this research is to devise and implement an algorithm to optimize all the individual utility functions comprised in a preference map …

Developing A Model For Evaluating Software Tools In Education, Vedant Jain
Masters Theses
"This thesis proposes a research model to evaluate computer-mediated learning technology, user acceptance of the technology, and the effect of the technology on learning outcomes. This thesis also introduces two innovative research techniques for such evaluations, that is, eye-tracking and the think aloud protocol. Think aloud protocol allows us to understand a user's state of mind while he/she is interacting with the system. Eye-tracking provides additional insights into a user's cognitive state while using the system and can help triangulate the results. We demonstrated the application of the research model and research techniques in evaluating visualization software designed in a …

"XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language) has become the fundamental standard for efficient data management and exchange. Due to the widespread use of XML for describing and exchanging data on the web, XML-based comparison is central issues in database management and information retrieval. In fact, although many heterogeneous XML sources have similar content, they may be described using different tag names and structures. This work proposes a series of algorithms for detection of structural and content changes among XML data. The first is an algorithm called XDoI (XML Data Integration Based on Content and Structure Similarity Using Keys) that clusters XML documents …

Doctoral Dissertations
"The need for automating genome analysis is a result of the tremendous amount of genomic data. As of today, a high-throughput DNA sequencing machine can run millions of sequencing reactions in parallel, and it is becoming faster and cheaper to sequence the entire genome of an organism. Public databases containing genomic data are growing exponentially, and hence the rise in demand for intuitive automated methods of DNA analysis and subsequent gene identification. However, the complexity of gene organization makes automation a challenging task, and smart algorithm design and parallelization are necessary to perform accurate analyses in reasonable amounts of time. …
Protein Secondary Structure Prediction Using Blast And Relaxed Threshold Rule Induction From Coverings, Leong Lee
Doctoral Dissertations
"Protein structure prediction has always been an important research area in bioinformatics and biochemistry. Despite the recent breakthrough of combining multiple sequence alignment information and artificial intelligence algorithms to predict protein secondary structure, the Q₃ accuracy of various computational prediction methods rarely has exceeded 75%; this status has changed little since 2003 when Rost stated that "the currently best methods reach a level around 77% three-state per-residue accuracy." The application of artificial neural network methods to this problem is revolutionary in the sense that those techniques employ the homologues of proteins for training and prediction. In this dissertation, a different …

Autonomous mobile sensors are employed with ever-increasing frequency, in applications ranging from search and rescue, detection of forest fires, and battlefield surveillance. in this paper, we consider a representative surveillance problem wherein a sparse number of mobile sensors are expected to cover events of interest in a deployment field. Each event appears for a certain time and then disappears. Furthermore, the location of each event and its duration is unknown. in this paper, we design a sensor movement strategy based on efficient traversal in the network to fulfill two objectives: maximizing event detection and minimizing detection delay. Analysis and simulations …

In this paper, we introduce a new type of coverage for wireless sensor networks, called Directed Coverage (D-Coverage). Basically, D-Coverage is the coverage provided by a sensor network monitoring an area between two boundaries, through which the intruder attempts to penetrates the area. We also study how to measure the quality of D-Coverage. Our first evaluation approach is a projection-Based simple approach, while our second approach is a more comprehensive Markov chain-based approach. Our evaluation approaches can accurately evaluate the quality and provide good guidelines for sensor network deployment and run-time repair. ©2009 IEEE.

Search of a state transition system is traditionally how deadlock detection for concurrent programs has been accomplished. This paper examines an approach to deadlock detection that uses geometric semantics involving the topo-logical notion of dihomotopy to partition the state space into components; after that the reduced state space is exhaustively searched. Prior work partitioned the state space inductively. in this paper we show that a recursive technique provides greater reduction of the size of the state transition system and therefore more efficient deadlock detection. If the preprocessing can be done efficiently, then for large problems we expect to see more …

Personal health records (PHRs) offer significant potential to stimulate transformational changes in health care delivery and self-care by patients. There is a gap between today's personal health records (PHRs) and what patients say they want and need from this electronic tool for managing their health information. Current barriers to PHR adoption among patients include cost, concerns that information is not protected or private, inconvenience, design shortcomings, and the inability to share information across organizations. We propose a novel architecture to bridge the gap based on Privacy Preserving Portable Health Record(P3HR), a device that incorporates a smart card into …

Protein 3D structure prediction has always been an important research area in bioinformatics. In particular, the prediction of secondary structure has been a well-studied research topic. Despite the recent breakthrough of combining multiple sequence alignment information and artificial intelligence algorithms to predict protein secondary structure, the Q3 accuracy of various computational prediction algorithms rarely has exceeded 75%. In a previous paper [1], this research team presented a rule-based method called RT-RICO (Relaxed Threshold Rule Induction from Coverings) to predict protein secondary structure. The average Q3 accuracy on the sample datasets using RT-RICO was 80.3%, an improvement over comparable computational methods. …

A System For Detecting Xml Similarity In Content And Structure Using Relational Database, Waraporn Viyanon, Sanjay Kumar Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we describe a system incorporating an improved technique that detects the similarity of two XML documents based on content and structure similarity using keys. the technique consists of three major components: A subtree generator and validator, a key generator, and similarity components that compare content and structure of the XML documents. First, an XML document is stored in a relational database and extracted into small subtrees using leaf-node parents. the leaf-node parents are considered as a root of a subtree which is then recursively traversed bottom-up for matching. Second, a possible key(s) is identified in order to …

Many applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require location information of the randomly deployed nodes. a common solution to the localization problem is to deploy a few special beacon nodes having location awareness, which help the ordinary nodes to localize. in this approach, non-beacon nodes estimate their locations using noisy distance measurements from three or more non-collinear beacons they can receive signals from. in this paper, the ranging-Based localization task is formulated as a multidimensional optimization problem, and addressed using bio-inspired algorithms, exploiting their quick convergence to quality solutions. an investigation on distributed iterative localization is presented in this paper. …
The Security Implication Of Multiple Observers In A Distributed System, Derek P. Ditch, Bruce M. Mcmillin
The Security Implication Of Multiple Observers In A Distributed System, Derek P. Ditch, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Confidentiality is an often overlooked, yet crucial point in the security analysis of a system. infrastructures take for granted that confidentiality is maintained through obfuscation by dissemination of information. This dissemination does indeed maintain the confidentiality of the system when only a small portion of the information can be obtained by an outside observer. However, when multiple observers collaboratively make observations, the confidential information can be revealed or even just partially revealed. If a team of attackers on a system can deduce enough information to successfully perform a crippling attack, the system could not be considered secure. This paper will …

In Cyber-physical systems, which are the integrations of computational and physical processes, it is hard to realize certain security properties. Fundamentally, physically observable behavior leads to violations of confidentiality. We focus on analyzing certain non-interference-based security properties to ensure that interactions between the cyber and physical processes preserve confidentiality. a considerable barrier to this analysis is representing the physical system's interactions. in this paper, these physical system properties are encoded into a discrete event system and the combined Cyber-physical system is described using the process algebra SPA. the model checker, CoPS shows BNDC (Bisimulation based Non-Deducibility on Compositions) properties, which …

Neural Network Control Of A Class Of Nonlinear Discrete Time Systems With Asymptotic Stability Guarantees, Balaje T. Thumati, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a single and multi-layer neural network (NN) controllers are developed for a class of nonlinear discrete time systems. under a mild assumption on the system uncertainties, which include unmodeled dynamics and bounded disturbances, by using novel weight update laws and a robust term, local asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in contrast with all other NN controllers where a uniform ultimate boundedness is normally shown. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the controller design. © 2009 AACC.

The fundamental cause of localization error in an indoor environment is fading and spreading of the radio signals due to scattering, diffraction, and reflection. These effects are predominant in regions where there is no-line-of-sight (NLoS) between the transmitter and the receiver. Efficient algorithms are needed to identify the subset of receivers that provide better localization accuracy. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel framework for leader-follower formation control is developed for the control of multiple quadrotors unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) based on spherical coordinates. the control objective for the follower UAV is to track its leader at a desired- separation, angle of incidence, and a bearing by using an auxiliary velocity control. Then, a novel neural network (NN) control law for the dynamical system is introduced to learn the complete dynamics of the UAV including unmodeled dynamics like aerodynamic friction. Additionally, the interconnection dynamic errors between the leader and its followers are explicitly considered, and the stability of …

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a loosely coupled architecture designed to meet business needs of an organization. It is becoming a trend for system development and integration where systems group functionality around business processes. Although SOA does not require Web services, Web services are based on accepted standards and drive SOA to the mainstream. There are at least two challenges with quality management of SOA based Web service systems. One of them is how to link explicitly its technical capability with customers' needs to satisfy customers' functional and nonfunctional requirements. the second is how to determine targets of Web service technical …
