Assessing Satellite Image Data Fusion With Information Theory Metrics, James Cross Jan 2014

Assessing Satellite Image Data Fusion With Information Theory Metrics, James Cross

Dissertations and Theses

A common problem in remote sensing is estimating an image with high spatial and high spectral resolution given separate sources of measurements from satellite instruments, one having each of these desirable properties. This thesis presents a survey of seven families of algorithms which have been developed to provide this common pattern of satellite image data fusion. They are all tested on artificially degraded sets of satellite data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (“MODIS”) with known ideal results, and evaluated using the commonly accepted data fusion assessment metrics spectral angle mapper (“SAM”) and Erreur Relative Globale Adimensionelle de Synth`ese (“ERGAS”). …

Introduction To Gis Using Open Source Software, 4th Ed, Frank Donnelly

Open Educational Resources

This tutorial was created to accompany the GIS Practicum, a day-long workshop offered by the Newman Library at Baruch College CUNY that introduces participants to geographic information systems (GIS) using the open source software QGIS. The practicum introduces GIS as a concept for envisioning information and as a tool for conducting geographic analyses and creating maps. Participants learn how to navigate a GIS interface, how to prepare layers and conduct a basic geographic analysis, and how to create thematic maps. This tutorial was written using QGIS version 1.8 "Lisboa", a cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) desktop GIS software package.

Cobweb Theorems With Production Lags And Price Forecasting, Daniel Dufresne, Felisa Vázquez-Abad May 2013

Cobweb Theorems With Production Lags And Price Forecasting, Daniel Dufresne, Felisa Vázquez-Abad

Publications and Research

The classical cobweb theorem is extended to include production lags and price forecasts. Price forecasting based on a longer period has a stabilizing effect on prices. Longer production lags do not necessarily lead to unstable prices; very long lags lead to cycles of constant amplitude. The classical cobweb requires elasticity of demand to be greater than that of supply; this is not necessarily the case in a more general setting. Random shocks are also considered.

Adoption Of Short Message Service: Gender Difference, Chulsung Kim, Dong-Gook Kim, Chongwoo Park Jan 2013

Adoption Of Short Message Service: Gender Difference, Chulsung Kim, Dong-Gook Kim, Chongwoo Park

Publications and Research

While the adoption of mobile devices has recently received research attention, there has been little research focusing on a specific application or service running in mobile devices. In this study, we examine the adoption of short message service (SMS) with the technology acceptance model. The model has been assessed with the data collected from 225 SMS users. Results from the partial least squares analysis show that perceived ease of use of SMS positively affects perceived usefulness of SMS and intention to adopt SMS, and perceived usefulness of SMS also positively affects intention to adopt SMS. Comparing the two factors, perceived …

Centerline Extraction For Image Segmentation Using Gradient And Direction Vector Flow Active Contours, Shuqun Zhang, Jianyang Zhou Jan 2013

Centerline Extraction For Image Segmentation Using Gradient And Direction Vector Flow Active Contours, Shuqun Zhang, Jianyang Zhou

Publications and Research

In this paper, we propose a fast centerline extraction method to be used for gradient and direction vector flow of active contours. The gradient and direction vector flow is a recently reported active contour model capable of significantly improving the image segmentation performance especially for complex object shape, by seamlessly integrating gradient vector flow and prior directional information. Since the prior directional information is provided by manual line drawing, it can be inconvenient for inexperienced users who might have difficulty in finding the best place to draw the directional lines to achieve the best segmentation performance. This paper describes a …

On The Nonsymmetric Longer Queue Model: Joint Distribution, Asymptotic Properties, And Heavy Traffic Limits, Charles Knessl, Haishen Yao Jan 2013

On The Nonsymmetric Longer Queue Model: Joint Distribution, Asymptotic Properties, And Heavy Traffic Limits, Charles Knessl, Haishen Yao

Publications and Research

We consider two parallel queues, each with independent Poisson arrival rates, that are tended by a single server. The exponential server devotes all of its capacity to the longer of the queues. If both queues are of equal length, the server devotes of its capacity to the first queue and the remaining to the second. We obtain exact integral representations for the joint probability distribution of the number of customers in this two-node network. Then we evaluate this distribution in various asymptotic limits, such as large numbers of customers in either/both of the queues, light traffic where arrivals are infrequent, …

Theoretical Methods For Blur-Correction In Electron And Soft X-Ray Microscopy, Joanna Klukowska Jan 2013

Theoretical Methods For Blur-Correction In Electron And Soft X-Ray Microscopy, Joanna Klukowska

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The process of object reconstruction from projections is widely used in many fields. One of the applications is the reconstruction of biological specimens from two-dimensional projections in transmission electron microscopy and transmission x-ray microscopy. Various methods have been developed for correcting the blurring that occurs when the projections are obtained by a real instrument. As the attainable resolution increases, new issues become apparent and need to be taken into account in the imaging model. In this dissertation we concentrate on the point spread function and its impact on the quality and usefulness of the reconstructions from images obtained according to …

Physical Unclonable Function Techniques Applied For Digital Hardware Protection, Anthony Barrera Jan 2013

Physical Unclonable Function Techniques Applied For Digital Hardware Protection, Anthony Barrera

Dissertations and Theses

"Privacy is an important property that is growing harder to keep as people develop new ways to steal information from users on their computers. Software alone cannot ensure privacy since an infected system is untrustworthy. This paper presents several challenges malware brings that can be solved by using an external processor. Techniques such as keystroke encryption and message authentication can be used to protect users from having their passwords and other private data stolen. To take advantage of the external hardware, a physical unclonable function can be used to generate private keys without the need for storing them in memory. …

3d Hallway Modeling Using A Single Image, Gregory M. Olmschenk Jan 2013

3d Hallway Modeling Using A Single Image, Gregory M. Olmschenk

Dissertations and Theses

"Real-time, low-resource corridor reconstruction using a single consumer grade RGB camera is a powerful tool for allowing a fast, inexpensive solution to indoor mobility of a visually impaired person or a robot. The perspective and known geometry of a corridor is used to extract the important features of the image and create a 3D model from a single image. Multiple 3D models can be combined to increase confidence and provide a global 3D model. This paper presents our results on 3D corridor modeling using single images. First a simple but effective 3D corridor modeling approach is introduced which makes very …

Discrete Transforms With Good Time-Frequency And Spatial-Frequency Localization, David Chisholm Jan 2013

Discrete Transforms With Good Time-Frequency And Spatial-Frequency Localization, David Chisholm

Dissertations and Theses

Discrete orthonormal time-frequency basis functions are described and used for both analysis and synthesis of complex-valued signals. We derive expressions for complex-valued expansion coefficients in time-frequency lattices in the discrete one dimensional case. This derivation is based on Professor I. Gertner's previous construction of a complete orthonormal set of basis functions well localized in the temporal-spatial-frequency domain in the continuous case. We describe how these can be generalized to any number of dimensions. Example applications are presented in one and two dimensions. Three dimensional basis functions are visualized and discussed. Finally, a full a Matlab implementation of this work is …

Pointcut Rejuvenation: Recovering Pointcut Expressions In Evolving Aspect-Oriented Software, Raffi Khatchadourian, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Harry Xu May 2012

Pointcut Rejuvenation: Recovering Pointcut Expressions In Evolving Aspect-Oriented Software, Raffi Khatchadourian, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Harry Xu

Publications and Research

Pointcut fragility is a well-documented problem in Aspect-Oriented Programming; changes to the base code can lead to join points incorrectly falling in or out of the scope of pointcuts. In this paper, we present an automated approach that limits fragility problems by providing mechanical assistance in pointcut maintenance. The approach is based on harnessing arbitrarily deep structural commonalities between program elements corresponding to join points selected by a pointcut. The extracted patterns are then applied to later versions to offer suggestions of new join points that may require inclusion. To illustrate that the motivation behind our proposal is well founded, …

Entropy And The Complexity Of Graphs Revisited, Abbe Mowshowitz, Matthias Dehmer Mar 2012

Entropy And The Complexity Of Graphs Revisited, Abbe Mowshowitz, Matthias Dehmer

Publications and Research

This paper presents a taxonomy and overview of approaches to the measurement of graph and network complexity. The taxonomy distinguishes between deterministic (e.g., Kolmogorov complexity) and probabilistic approaches with a view to placing entropy-based probabilistic measurement in context. Entropy-based measurement is the main focus of the paper. Relationships between the different entropy functions used to measure complexity are examined; and intrinsic (e.g., classical measures) and extrinsic (e.g., Körner entropy) variants of entropy-based models are discussed in some detail.
