Meta Learning Recommendation System For Classification, Clarence O. Williams Iii
Meta Learning Recommendation System For Classification, Clarence O. Williams Iii
Theses and Dissertations
A data driven approach is an emerging paradigm for the handling of analytic problems. In this paradigm the mantra is to let the data speak freely. However, when using machine learning algorithms, the data does not naturally reveal the best or even a good approach for algorithm choice. One method to let the algorithm reveal itself is through the use of Meta Learning, which uses the features of a dataset to determine a useful model to represent the entire dataset. This research proposes an improvement on the meta-model recommendation system by adding classification problems to the candidate problem space with …
Towards K-Vertex Connected Component Discovery From Large Networks, Li Yuan, Guoren Wang, Yuhai Zhao, Feida Zhu
Towards K-Vertex Connected Component Discovery From Large Networks, Li Yuan, Guoren Wang, Yuhai Zhao, Feida Zhu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In many real life network-based applications such as social relation analysis, Web analysis, collaborative network, road network and bioinformatics, the discovery of components with high connectivity is an important problem. In particular, k-edge connected component (k-ECC) has recently been extensively studied to discover disjoint components. Yet many real scenarios present more needs and challenges for overlapping components. In this paper, we propose a k-vertex connected component (k-VCC) model, which is much more cohesive, and thus supports overlapping between components very well. To discover k-VCCs, we propose three frameworks including top-down, bottom-up and hybrid …
Automatic Verification Of Multi-Threaded Programs By Inference Of Rely-Guarantee Specifications, Xuan-Bach Le, David Sanan, Jun Sun, Shang-Wei Lin
Automatic Verification Of Multi-Threaded Programs By Inference Of Rely-Guarantee Specifications, Xuan-Bach Le, David Sanan, Jun Sun, Shang-Wei Lin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Rely-Guarantee is a comprehensive technique that supports compositional reasoning for concurrent programs. However, specifications of the Rely condition - environment interference, and Guarantee condition - local transformation of thread state - are challenging to establish. Thus the construction of these conditions becomes bottleneck in automating the technique. To tackle the above problem, we propose a verification framework that, based on Rely-Guarantee principles, constructs the correctness proof of concurrent program through inferring suitable Rely -Guarantee conditions automatically. Our framework first constructs a Hoare-style sequential proof for each thread and then applies abstraction refinement to elevate these proofs into concurrent ones with …
Algorithm Selection Framework For Cyber Attack Detection, Marc W. Chalé, Nathaniel D. Bastian, Jeffery D. Weir
Algorithm Selection Framework For Cyber Attack Detection, Marc W. Chalé, Nathaniel D. Bastian, Jeffery D. Weir
Faculty Publications
The number of cyber threats against both wired and wireless computer systems and other components of the Internet of Things continues to increase annually. In this work, an algorithm selection framework is employed on the NSL-KDD data set and a novel paradigm of machine learning taxonomy is presented. The framework uses a combination of user input and meta-features to select the best algorithm to detect cyber attacks on a network. Performance is compared between a rule-of-thumb strategy and a meta-learning strategy. The framework removes the conjecture of the common trial-and-error algorithm selection method. The framework recommends five algorithms from the …

Arrhythmia constitutes a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat, and an early diagnosis is essential for the timely inception of successful treatment. We have jointly optimized the entire multi-stage arrhythmia classification scheme based on 12-lead surface ECGs that attains the accuracy performance level of professional cardiologists. The new approach is comprised of a three-step noise reduction stage, a novel feature extraction method and an optimal classification model with finely tuned hyperparameters. We carried out an exhaustive study comparing thousands of competing classification algorithms that were trained on our proprietary, large and expertly labeled dataset consisting of 12-lead …

The proliferation of mobile devices that support the acceleration of data services (especially smartphones) has resulted in a dramatic increase in mobile traffic. Mobile data also increased exponentially, already exceeding the throughput of the backhaul. To improve spectrum utilization and increase mobile network traffic, in combination with content caching, we study the cooperation between primary and secondary networks via content caching. We consider that the secondary base station assists the primary user by pre-caching some popular primary contents. Thus, the secondary base station can obtain more licensed bandwidth to serve its own user. We mainly focus on the time delay …

Sentiment Analysis For Airline Services On Twitter Using Deep Learning With Word Embedding, Nour El Daim El Khalifa Mawada Mohamed
Sentiment Analysis For Airline Services On Twitter Using Deep Learning With Word Embedding, Nour El Daim El Khalifa Mawada Mohamed
Student Works (2020-2029)
The use of social media platform in the airline industries have increased rapidly to allow analysis introduce the quality and performance of the services. The role of Sentiment Analysis (SA) is to classify people's opinions into different categories, such as positive and negative from text, using existing algorithms. However, existing approaches such as the Bag of Words (BOW) model is frequently used for text classification, where a document is mapped to a feature vector before the construction of the actual model, using machine learning techniques, like Logistical Regression and Support Vector algorithms. This problem has led to low accuracy in …
Bounding Regret In Empirical Games, Steven Jecmen, Arunesh Sinha, Zun Li, Long Tran-Thanh
Bounding Regret In Empirical Games, Steven Jecmen, Arunesh Sinha, Zun Li, Long Tran-Thanh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Empirical game-theoretic analysis refers to a set of models and techniques for solving large-scale games. However, there is a lack of a quantitative guarantee about the quality of output approximate Nash equilibria (NE). A natural quantitative guarantee for such an approximate NE is the regret in the game (i.e. the best deviation gain). We formulate this deviation gain computation as a multi-armed bandit problem, with a new optimization goal unlike those studied in prior work. We propose an efficient algorithm Super-Arm UCB (SAUCB) for the problem and a number of variants. We present sample complexity results as well as extensive …

Designing Fractal Line Pied-De-Poules: A Case Study In Algorithmic Design Mediating Between Culture And Fractal Mathematics, Loe M.G. Feijs
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Millions of people own and wear pied-de-poule (houndstooth) garments. The pattern has an intriguing basic figure and a typical set of symmetries. The origin of the pattern lies in a specific type of weaving. In this article I apply computational techniques to modernize this ancient decorative pattern. In particular I describe a way to enrich pied-de-poule with a fractal structure.
Although a first fractal line pied-de-poule was shown at Bridges 2015, a number of fundamental questions still remained. The following questions are addressed in this article: Does the original pied-de-poule appear as a limit case when the fractal structure is …
Dronesig: Lightweight Digital Signature Protocol For Micro Aerial Vehicles, Yucheng Li
Dronesig: Lightweight Digital Signature Protocol For Micro Aerial Vehicles, Yucheng Li
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Micro aerial vehicles a.k.a. drones, have become an integral part of a variety of civilian and military application domains, including but not limited to aerial surveying and mapping, aerial surveillance and security, aerial inspection of infrastructure, and aerial delivery. Meanwhile, the cybersecurity of drones is gaining significant attention due to both financial and strategic information and value involved in aerial applications. As a result of the lack of security features in the communication protocol, an adversary can easily interfere with on-going communications or even seize control of the drone. In this thesis, we propose a lightweight digital signature protocol, also …
Using Natural Language Processing To Categorize Fictional Literature In An Unsupervised Manner, Dalton J. Crutchfield
Using Natural Language Processing To Categorize Fictional Literature In An Unsupervised Manner, Dalton J. Crutchfield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When following a plot in a story, categorization is something that humans do without even thinking; whether this is simple classification like “This is science fiction” or more complex trope recognition like recognizing a Chekhov's gun or a rags to riches storyline, humans group stories with other similar stories. Research has been done to categorize basic plots and acknowledge common story tropes on the literary side, however, there is not a formula or set way to determine these plots in a story line automatically. This paper explores multiple natural language processing techniques in an attempt to automatically compare and cluster …

Development Of Machine Learning Tutorials For R, John Pintar
All Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Machine learning (ML) techniques developed in computer science have revolutionized nearly every sector of industry. Despite the prevalence and usefulness of ML, students outside of computer science rarely receive training in ML. Students frequently receive training in statistical analysis, often using the software package R, which is free, open source, and has additional downloadable modules. A popular module is the ML package caret, which contains 238 different ML algorithms, each with 0-9 hyperparameters. caret is powerful, flexible, and provides consistent syntax across algorithms. In the hands of an experienced practitioner, this tunability is welcomed and can increase accuracy. However, when …

Accessibility Of Deepfakes, Andrew L. Collings
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
The danger posed by falsified media, commonly referred to as deepfakes, has been well researched and documented. The software Faceswap to was used to swap the faces of two politician (Joe Biden and Donald Trump). The testing was performed using an affordable consumer GPU (an AMD Radeon RX 570) over 100,000 iterations. The process and results for the two attempts with the best results (and largest differences) were recorded. The result was ultimately unconvincing, while the software was able to recreate the facial structure the lighting and skin tone did not blend at all.
Automatic Distinction Between Twitter Bots And Humans, Jeremiah Stubbs
Automatic Distinction Between Twitter Bots And Humans, Jeremiah Stubbs
All Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Weak artificial intelligence uses encoded functions of rules to process information. This kind of intelligence is competent, but lacks consciousness, and therefore cannot comprehend what it is doing. In another view, strong artificial intelligence has a mind of its own that resembles a human mind. Many of the bots on Twitter are only following a set of encoded rules. Previous studies have created machine learning algorithms to determine whether a Twitter account was being run by a human or a bot. Twitter bots are improving and some are even fooling humans. Creating a machine learning algorithm that differentiates a bot …

Leveraging Peer-To-Peer Energy Sharing For Resource Optimization In Mobile Social Networks, Aashish Dhungana
Theses and Dissertations
Mobile Opportunistic Networks (MSNs) enable the interaction of mobile users in the vicinity through various short-range wireless communication technologies (e.g., Bluetooth, WiFi) and let them discover and exchange information directly or in ad hoc manner. Despite their promise to enable many exciting applications, limited battery capacity of mobile devices has become the biggest impediment to these appli- cations. The recent breakthroughs in the areas of wireless power transfer (WPT) and rechargeable lithium batteries promise the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy sharing (i.e., the transfer of energy from the battery of one member of the mobile network to the battery of …

Landing Throttleable Hybrid Rockets With Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning In A Simulated Environment, Francesco Alessandro Stefano Mikulis-Borsoi
Landing Throttleable Hybrid Rockets With Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning In A Simulated Environment, Francesco Alessandro Stefano Mikulis-Borsoi
Honors Theses and Capstones
In this paper, I develop a hierarchical Markov Decision Process (MDP) structure for completing the task of vertical rocket landing. I start by covering the background of this problem, and formally defining its constraints. In order to reduce mistakes while formulating different MDPs, I define and develop the criteria for a standardized MDP definition format. I then decompose the problem into several sub-problems of vertical landing, namely velocity control and vertical stability control. By exploiting MDP coupling and symmetrical properties, I am able to significantly reduce the size of the state space compared to a unified MDP formulation. This paper …
Toward Efficient Automation Of Interpretable Machine Learning Boosting, Nathan Neuhaus
Toward Efficient Automation Of Interpretable Machine Learning Boosting, Nathan Neuhaus
All Master's Theses
Developing efficient automated methods for Interpretable Machine Learning (IML) is an important and long-term goal in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Currently the Machine Learning landscape is dominated by Neural Networks (NNs) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs), models which are often highly accurate. Despite high accuracy, such models are essentially “black boxes” and therefore are too risky for situations like healthcare where real lives are at stake. In such situations, so called “glass-box” models, such as Decision Trees (DTs), Bayesian Networks (BNs), and Logic Relational (LR) models are often preferred, however can succumb to accuracy limitations. Unfortunately, having to choose …

Certified Functions For Mesh Generation, Andrey N. Chernikov
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Formal methods allow for building correct-by-construction software with provable guarantees. The formal development presented here resulted in certified executable functions for mesh generation. The term certified means that their correctness is established via an artifact, or certificate, which is a statement of these functions in a formal language along with the proofs of their correctness. The term is meaningful only when qualified by a specific set of properties that are proven. This manuscript elaborates on the precise statements of the properties being proven and their role in an implementation of a version of the Isosurface Stuffing algorithm by Labelle and …

An Assessment Of Pet Dose Reduction With Penalized Likelihood Image Reconstruction Using A Computationally Efficient Model Observer, Howard C. Gifford, C. Ross Schmidtlein, Andrzej Krol, Yuesheng Xu
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Developing PET reconstruction algorithms with improved low-count capabilities may provide a timely and cost- effective means of reducing radiation dose in promising clinical applications such as immuno-PET that require long-lived radiotracers. For many PET clinics, the reconstruction protocol consists of postsmoothed ordered-sets expectation-maximization (OSEM) reconstruction, but penalized likelihood methods based on total-variation (TV) regularization could substantially reduce dose. We performed a task-based comparison of postsmoothed OSEM and higher-order TV (HOTV) reconstructions using simulated images of a contrast-detail phantom. An anthropomorphic visual-search model observer read the images in a location-known receiver operating characteristic (ROC) format. Acquisition counts, target uptake, and target …

With the significant increase in the use of image information, image restoration has been gaining much attention by researchers. Restoring the structural information as well as the textural information of a damaged image to produce visually plausible restorations is a challenging task. Genetic algorithm (GA) and its variants have been applied in many fields due to their global optimization capabilities. However, the applications of GA to the image restoration domain still remain an emerging discipline. It is still challenging and difficult to restore a damaged image by leveraging GA optimization. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel GA-based …
An Exact Single-Agent Task Selection Algorithm For The Crowdsourced Logistics, Chung-Kyun Han, Shih-Fen Cheng
An Exact Single-Agent Task Selection Algorithm For The Crowdsourced Logistics, Chung-Kyun Han, Shih-Fen Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The trend of moving online in the retail industry has created great pressure for the logistics industry to catch up both in terms of volume and response time. On one hand, volume is fluctuating at greater magnitude, making peaks higher; on the other hand, customers are also expecting shorter response time. As a result, logistics service providers are pressured to expand and keep up with the demands. Expanding fleet capacity, however, is not sustainable as capacity built for the peak seasons would be mostly vacant during ordinary days. One promising solution is to engage crowdsourced workers, who are not employed …
An Intra-Severity Classification And Adaptation Technique To Improve Dysarthric Speech Recognition Accuracy, Al-Qatab Bassam Ali Qasem
An Intra-Severity Classification And Adaptation Technique To Improve Dysarthric Speech Recognition Accuracy, Al-Qatab Bassam Ali Qasem
Student Works (2020-2029)
Dysarthria is a motor speech impairment at the neurological and/or muscular levels that caused difficulty in pronouncing words clearly. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) system is increasingly applied as assistive technology to aid an individual with physical disability particularly the speech impaired community such as dysarthria speakers. However, the development of an effective ASR system is hindered by the data sparsity, either in the coverage of the language or the size of the existing speech databases. The speaker adaptation (SA) technique is one of the solutions to overcome the data sparsity issue of ASR for dysarthric speakers. Our proposed method introduces …

Multimodal Data Integration For Real-Time Indoor Navigation Using A Smartphone, Yaohua Chang
Dissertations and Theses
We propose an integrated solution of indoor navigation using a smartphone, especially for assisting people with special needs, such as the blind and visually impaired (BVI) individuals. The system consists of three components: hybrid modeling, real-time navigation, and client-server architecture. In the hybrid modeling component, the hybrid model of a building is created region by region and is organized in a graph structure with nodes as destinations and landmarks, and edges as traversal paths between nodes. A Wi-Fi/cellular-data connectivity map, a beacon signal strength map, a 3D visual model (with destinations and landmarks annotated) are collected while a modeler walks …
V-Slam And Sensor Fusion For Ground Robots, Ejup Hoxha
V-Slam And Sensor Fusion For Ground Robots, Ejup Hoxha
Dissertations and Theses
In underground, underwater and indoor environments, a robot has to rely solely on its on-board sensors to sense and understand its surroundings. This is the main reason why SLAM gained the popularity it has today. In recent years, we have seen excellent improvement on accuracy of localization using cameras and combinations of different sensors, especially camera-IMU (VIO) fusion. Incorporating more sensors leads to improvement of accuracy, but also robustness of SLAM. However, while testing SLAM in our ground robots, we have seen a decrease in performance quality when using the same algorithms on flying vehicles. We have an additional sensor for ground …
