The Interacting Multiple Models Algorithm With State-Dependent Value Assignment, Rastin Rastgoufard May 2012

The Interacting Multiple Models Algorithm With State-Dependent Value Assignment, Rastin Rastgoufard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The value of a state is a measure of its worth, so that, for example, waypoints have high value and regions inside of obstacles have very small value. We propose two methods of incorporating world information as state-dependent modifications to the interacting multiple models (IMM) algorithm, and then we use a game's player-controlled trajectories as ground truths to compare the normal IMM algorithm to versions with our proposed modifications. The two methods involve modifying the model probabilities in the update step and modifying the transition probability matrix in the mixing step based on the assigned values of different target states. …

A Normal Truncated Skewed-Laplace Model In Stochastic Frontier Analysis, Junyi Wang May 2012

A Normal Truncated Skewed-Laplace Model In Stochastic Frontier Analysis, Junyi Wang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Stochastic frontier analysis is an exciting method of economic production modeling that is relevant to hospitals, stock markets, manufacturing factories, and services. In this paper, we create a new model using the normal distribution and truncated skew-Laplace distribution, namely the normal-truncated skew-Laplace model. This is a generalized model of the normal-exponential case. Furthermore, we compute the true technical efficiency and estimated technical efficiency of the normal-truncated skewed-Laplace model. Also, we compare the technical efficiencies of normal-truncated skewed-Laplace model and normal-exponential model.

The clinical significance of copy number variants (CNVs) in congenital heart disease (CHD) continues to be a challenge. Although CNVs including genes can confer disease risk, relationships between gene dosage and phenotype are still being defined. Our goal was to perform a quantitative analysis of CNVs involving 100 well-defined CHD risk genes identified through previously published human association studies in subjects with anatomically defined cardiac malformations. A novel analytical approach permitting CNV gene frequency “spectra” to be computed over prespecified regions to determine phenotype-gene dosage relationships was employed. CNVs in subjects with CHD (n = 945), subphenotyped into 40 …

Vibrio cholerae cytolysin (VCC) is among the accessory V. cholerae virulence factors that may contribute to disease pathogenesis in humans. VCC, encoded by hlyA gene, belongs to the most common class of bacterial toxins, known as poreforming toxins (PFTs). V. cholerae infects and kills Caenorhabditis elegans via cholerae toxin independent manner. VCC is required for the lethality, growth retardation and intestinal cell vacuolation during the infection. However, little is known about the host gene expression responses against VCC. To address this question we performed a microarray study in C. elegans exposed to V. cholerae strains with intact and deleted hlyA …

H-Colouring Bipartite Graphs, John Engbers, David Galvin May 2012

H-Colouring Bipartite Graphs, John Engbers, David Galvin

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

For graphs G and H, an H-colouring of G (or homomorphism from G to H) is a function from the vertices of G to the vertices of H that preserves adjacency. H-colourings generalize such graph theory notions as proper colourings and independent sets. For a given H, k∈V(H) and G we consider the proportion of vertices of G that get mapped to k in a uniformly chosen H-colouring of G. Our main result concerns this quantity when G is regular and bipartite. We find numbers 0⩽a−(k)⩽a+(k)⩽1 with the property that for all such G, with high probability the proportion is …

Participants in the study were divided into two groups of 30 each, with one group receiving the treatment devised for the research and the other using the common prevalent method. Both the groups were subjected to a test, based upon the analysis of which a conclusion was derived. The subjects were …

K-8 Preservice Teachers’ Inductive Reasoning In The Problem-Solving Contexts, Marta Magiera Apr 2012

K-8 Preservice Teachers’ Inductive Reasoning In The Problem-Solving Contexts, Marta Magiera

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

This paper reports the results from an exploratory study of K-8 pre-service teachers’ inductive reasoning. The analysis of 130 written solutions to seven tasks and 77 reflective journals completed by 20 pre-service teachers lead to descriptions of inductive reasoning processes, i.e. specializing, conjecturing, generalizing, and justifying, in the problem-solving contexts. The uncovered characterizations of the four inductive reasoning processes were further used to describe pathways of successful generalizations. The results highlight the importance of specializing and justifying in constructing powerful generalizations. Implications for teacher education are discussed.

Random Number Generation: Types And Techniques, David F. Dicarlo Apr 2012

Random Number Generation: Types And Techniques, David F. Dicarlo

Senior Honors Theses

What does it mean to have random numbers? Without understanding where a group of numbers came from, it is impossible to know if they were randomly generated. However, common sense claims that if the process to generate these numbers is truly understood, then the numbers could not be random. Methods that are able to let their internal workings be known without sacrificing random results are what this paper sets out to describe. Beginning with a study of what it really means for something to be random, this paper dives into the topic of random number generators and summarizes the key …

A Common Framework For Restriction Semigroups And Regular *-Semigroups, Peter R. Jones Mar 2012

A Common Framework For Restriction Semigroups And Regular *-Semigroups, Peter R. Jones

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Left restriction semigroups have appeared at the convergence of several flows of research, including the theories of abstract semigroups, of partial mappings, of closure operations and even in logic. For instance, they model unary semigroups of partial mappings on a set, where the unary operation takes a map to the identity map on its domain. This perspective leads naturally to dual and two-sided versions of the restriction property. From a varietal perspective, these classes of semigroups–more generally, the corresponding classes of Ehresmann semigroups–derive from reducts of inverse semigroups, now taking a to a+=aa−1 (or, dually, …

A Cautionary Note On Generalized Linear Models For Covariance Of Unbalanced Longitudinal Data, Jianhua Z. Huang, Min Chen, Mehdi Maadooliat, Mohsen Pourahmadi Mar 2012

A Cautionary Note On Generalized Linear Models For Covariance Of Unbalanced Longitudinal Data, Jianhua Z. Huang, Min Chen, Mehdi Maadooliat, Mohsen Pourahmadi

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Missing data in longitudinal studies can create enormous challenges in data analysis when coupled with the positive-definiteness constraint on a covariance matrix. For complete balanced data, the Cholesky decomposition of a covariance matrix makes it possible to remove the positive-definiteness constraint and use a generalized linear model setup to jointly model the mean and covariance using covariates (Pourahmadi, 2000). However, this approach may not be directly applicable when the longitudinal data are unbalanced, as coherent regression models for the dependence across all times and subjects may not exist. Within the existing generalized linear model framework, we show how to overcome …

Application Of Inter-Die Rank Statistics In Defect Detection, Vivek Bakshi Mar 2012

Application Of Inter-Die Rank Statistics In Defect Detection, Vivek Bakshi

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents a statistical method to identify the test escapes. Test often acquires parametric measurements as a function of logical state of a chip. The usual method of classifying chips as pass or fail is to compare each state measurement to a test limit. Subtle manufacturing defects are escaping the test limits due to process variations in deep sub-micron technologies which results in mixing of healthy and faulty parametric test measurements. This thesis identifies the chips with subtle defects by using rank order of the parametric measurements. A hypothesis is developed that a defect is likely to disturb the …

Maximizing Network Lifetime On The Line With Adjustable Sensing Ranges, Amotz Bar-Noy, Ben Baumer Feb 2012

Maximizing Network Lifetime On The Line With Adjustable Sensing Ranges, Amotz Bar-Noy, Ben Baumer

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Given n sensors on a line, each of which is equipped with a unit battery charge and an adjustable sensing radius, what schedule will maximize the lifetime of a network that covers the entire line? Trivially, any reasonable algorithm is at least a 1/2-approximation, but we prove tighter bounds for several natural algorithms. We focus on developing a linear time algorithm that maximizes the expected lifetime under a random uniform model of sensor distribution. We demonstrate one such algorithm that achieves an average-case approximation ratio of almost 0.9. Most of the algorithms that we consider come from a family based …

Physiologic Noise Regression, Motion Regression, And Toast Dynamic Field Correction In Complex-Valued Fmri Time Series, Andrew D. Hahn, Daniel B. Rowe Feb 2012

Physiologic Noise Regression, Motion Regression, And Toast Dynamic Field Correction In Complex-Valued Fmri Time Series, Andrew D. Hahn, Daniel B. Rowe

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

As more evidence is presented suggesting that the phase, as well as the magnitude, of functional MRI (fMRI) time series may contain important information and that there are theoretical drawbacks to modeling functional response in the magnitude alone, removing noise in the phase is becoming more important. Previous studies have shown that retrospective correction of noise from physiologic sources can remove significant phase variance and that dynamic main magnetic field correction and regression of estimated motion parameters also remove significant phase fluctuations. In this work, we investigate the performance of physiologic noise regression in a framework along with correction for …

Categoricity And Topological Graphs, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Let X be a topological graph, with arcs joined only at end points. If Y is any locally connected metrizable compactum that is co-elementarily equivalent to X, then Y is homeomorphic to X. In particular, X and Y are homeomorphic if some lattice base for one is elementarily equivalent to some lattice base for the other.

Parsing The Relationship Between Baserunning And Batting Abilities Within Lineups, Ben S. Baumer, James Piette, Brad Null Jan 2012

Parsing The Relationship Between Baserunning And Batting Abilities Within Lineups, Ben S. Baumer, James Piette, Brad Null

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

A baseball team's offensive prowess is a function of two types of abilities: batting and baserunning. While each has been studied extensively in isolation, the effects of their interaction is not well understood. We model offensive output as a scalar function f of an individual player's batting and baserunning profile z. Each of these profiles is in turn estimated from Retrosheet data using heirarchical Bayesian models. We then use the SimulOutCome simulation engine as a method to generate values of f(z) over a fine grid of points. Finally, for each of several methods of taking the extra base, we graphically …

Protection By 20-5,14-Hedge Against Surgically-Induced Ischemia Reperfusion Lung Injury In Rats, Irshad Ali, Stephanie Gruenloh, Ying Gao, Anne V. Clough, John R. Falck, Meetha Medhora, Elizabeth R. Jacobs

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Background

We previously reported that the cytochrome P450 product 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid has prosurvival effects in pulmonary artery endothelial cells and ex vivo pulmonary arteries. We tested the potential of a 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid analog N-[20-hydroxyeicosa-5(Z),14(Z)-dienoyl]glycine (20-5,14-HEDGE) to protect against lung ischemic reperfusion injury in rats. Furthermore, we examined activation of innate immune system components, high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), in this model as well as the effect of 20-5,14-HEDGE on this signaling pathway.

Methods

Sprague-Dawley rats treated with 20-5,14-HEDGE or vehicle were subjected to surgically induced, unilateral lung ischemia for 60 minutes followed by reperfusion …

A Direct D-Bar Reconstruction Algorithm For Recovering A Complex Conductivity In 2d, Sarah J. Hamilton, C. N. L. Herrera, J. L. Mueller, A. Von Herrmann Jan 2012

A Direct D-Bar Reconstruction Algorithm For Recovering A Complex Conductivity In 2d, Sarah J. Hamilton, C. N. L. Herrera, J. L. Mueller, A. Von Herrmann

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A direct reconstruction algorithm for complex conductivities in W2, ∞(Ω), where Ω is a bounded, simply connected Lipschitz domain in R2 , is presented. The framework is based on the uniqueness proof by Francini (2000 Inverse Problems 6 107–19), but equations relating the Dirichlet-to-Neumann to the scattering transform and the exponentially growing solutions are not present in that work, and are derived here. The algorithm constitutes the first D-bar method for the reconstruction of conductivities and permittivities in two dimensions. Reconstructions of numerically simulated chest phantoms with discontinuities at the organ boundaries are included.

Secondary Structure Prediction Of Long Rna Sequences Based On Inversion Excursions And A Modularized Mapreduce Framework, Daniel Tesfai Yehdego Jan 2012

Secondary Structure Prediction Of Long Rna Sequences Based On Inversion Excursions And A Modularized Mapreduce Framework, Daniel Tesfai Yehdego

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules and their secondary structures play important roles in many biological processes including gene expression and regulation. The genomes of many viruses are also RNA molecules. Since secondary structures are crucial for RNA functionality, computational predictions of the RNA secondary structures have been widely studied. However, the tremendous demands on computer memory and computing time for complex secondary structures limit the capability of existing thermodynamically based algorithms for structure predictions to handling only short RNA sequences with a few hundred bases. One approach to overcome this limitation is by first cutting long RNA sequences into shorter, non-overlapping …

Design And Implementation Of An Open Framework For Ubiquitous Carbon Footprint Calculator Applications, Farzana Rahman, Casey O'Brien, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, He Zhang, Lin Liu

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

As climate change is becoming an important global issue, more and more people are beginning to pay attention to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To measure personal or household carbon dioxide emission, there are already plenty of carbon footprint calculators available on the web. Most of these calculators use quantitative models to estimate carbon emission caused by a user's activities. Although these calculators can promote public awareness regarding carbon emission due to an individual's behavior, there are concerns about the consistency and transparency of these existing CO2 calculators. Apart from a small group of smart phone based carbon footprint calculator …

Automating Construction And Selection Of A Neural Network Using Stochastic Optimization, Jason Lee Hurt Dec 2011

Automating Construction And Selection Of A Neural Network Using Stochastic Optimization, Jason Lee Hurt

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

An artificial neural network can be used to solve various statistical problems by approximating a function that provides a mapping from input to output data. No universal method exists for architecting an optimal neural network. Training one with a low error rate is often a manual process requiring the programmer to have specialized knowledge of the domain for the problem at hand.

A distributed architecture is proposed and implemented for generating a neural network capable of solving a particular problem without specialized knowledge of the problem domain. The only knowledge the application needs is a training set that the network …

It then compared the effects of reform policies on access to institutional credits in Nigerian agricultural sector before and after the reforms (1978 - 1985; and 1986 -2009). Relying mainly on time series data from CBN and NBS, it used ordinary least squares method (linear, semi-log and double log) to model the determinants of banking sector lending to the agricultural sector during the review period. The models were subjected to several econometric tests before accepting one. Chow test …

Determinants Of Foreign Reserves In Nigeria: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag Approach, David Irefin, Baba N. Yaaba Dec 2011

Determinants Of Foreign Reserves In Nigeria: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag Approach, David Irefin, Baba N. Yaaba

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

On global scale, central banks’ holdings of foreign reserves have escalated sharply in recent years. World international reserves holdings have risen significantly from US$1.2 trillion in 1995 to nearly US$10.0 trillion in June 2011. Dominant among these reserves are concentrated in the hands of few countries. Ten major holders of foreign reserves are mostly from Asia. Oil exporting countries in Africa and the Middle East are not left out in this trend. Nigeria’s foreign reserves rose from US$5.5 billion in 1999 to US$62.40 billion in July 2008, making Nigeria the twenty-fourth largest reserves holder in the world. This pace of …
