Improving Bayesian Graph Convolutional Networks Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Graph Sampling, Aneesh Komanduri May 2021

Improving Bayesian Graph Convolutional Networks Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Graph Sampling, Aneesh Komanduri

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the modern age of social media and networks, graph representations of real-world phenomena have become incredibly crucial. Often, we are interested in understanding how entities in a graph are interconnected. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have proven to be a very useful tool in a variety of graph learning tasks including node classification, link prediction, and edge classification. However, in most of these tasks, the graph data we are working with may be noisy and may contain spurious edges. That is, there is a lot of uncertainty associated with the underlying graph structure. Recent approaches to modeling uncertainty have been …

The work involved in this project included creating a simple website that imitates a social media or forum with a feed of user submitted text posts, implementing an emotional analysis algorithm from a word emotions dataset, designing …

Making Valid Inferences With Decision Tree, George Ekow Quaye May 2021

Making Valid Inferences With Decision Tree, George Ekow Quaye

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

HypoThesis testing and Confidence Interval (CI) estimates are key statistics in predicting future values in data analysis. Most often, CI estimates are directly obtained from the summary statistics of a particular statistical methodology output. However, when it comes to the summary of decision tree outputs, these CI estimates are not directly obtained. So a na\"{i}ve way of making node-level inference is to construct a $(1-\alpha) \times 100\%$ confidence interval for a node mean $\bar{y}_t$ using the relation: $\bar{y}_t \, \pm \, z_{1-\alpha/2} \, \frac{s_t}{\sqrt{n_t}}$, where $\bar{y}_t$ is the node mean and $s_t$ is the standard deviation estimates from the decision …

Node Classification On Relational Graphs Using Deep-Rgcns, Nagasai Chandra Mar 2021

Node Classification On Relational Graphs Using Deep-Rgcns, Nagasai Chandra

Master's Theses

Knowledge Graphs are fascinating concepts in machine learning as they can hold usefully structured information in the form of entities and their relations. Despite the valuable applications of such graphs, most knowledge bases remain incomplete. This missing information harms downstream applications such as information retrieval and opens a window for research in statistical relational learning tasks such as node classification and link prediction. This work proposes a deep learning framework based on existing relational convolutional (R-GCN) layers to learn on highly multi-relational data characteristic of realistic knowledge graphs for node property classification tasks. We propose a deep and improved variant, …

Clustering Web Users By Mouse Movement To Detect Bots And Botnet Attacks, Justin L. Morgan Mar 2021

Clustering Web Users By Mouse Movement To Detect Bots And Botnet Attacks, Justin L. Morgan

Master's Theses

The need for website administrators to efficiently and accurately detect the presence of web bots has shown to be a challenging problem. As the sophistication of modern web bots increases, specifically their ability to more closely mimic the behavior of humans, web bot detection schemes are more quickly becoming obsolete by failing to maintain effectiveness. Though machine learning-based detection schemes have been a successful approach to recent implementations, web bots are able to apply similar machine learning tactics to mimic human users, thus bypassing such detection schemes. This work seeks to address the issue of machine learning based bots bypassing …

Machine Learning Morphisms: A Framework For Designing And Analyzing Machine Learning Work Ows, Applied To Separability, Error Bounds, And 30-Day Hospital Readmissions, Eric Zenon Cawi

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

A machine learning workflow is the sequence of tasks necessary to implement a machine learning application, including data collection, preprocessing, feature engineering, exploratory analysis, and model training/selection. In this dissertation we propose the Machine Learning Morphism (MLM) as a mathematical framework to describe the tasks in a workflow. The MLM is a tuple consisting of: Input Space, Output Space, Learning Morphism, Parameter Prior, Empirical Risk Function. This contains the information necessary to learn the parameters of the learning morphism, which represents a workflow task. In chapter 1, we give a short review of typical tasks present in a workflow, as …

Sars-Cov-2 Pandemic Analytical Overview With Machine Learning Predictability, Anthony Tanaydin, Jingchen Liang, Daniel W. Engels

SMU Data Science Review

Understanding diagnostic tests and examining important features of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection are essential steps for controlling the current pandemic of 2020. In this paper, we study the relationship between clinical diagnosis and analytical features of patient blood panels from the US, Mexico, and Brazil. Our analysis confirms that among adults, the risk of severe illness from COVID-19 increases with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and immunosuppression. Although more than eight months into pandemic, more data have become available to indicate that more young adults were getting infected. In addition, we expand on the definition of COVID-19 test and discuss …

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Background: Extraction of coal through mountaintop removal mining (MTR) alters many dimensions of the landscape, and explosive blasts, exposed rock, and coal washing have the potential to pollute air and water with substances known to increase risk of developmental and birth anomalies. Previous research suggests that infants born to mothers living in MTR coal mining counties have higher prevalence of most types of birth defects.

Objectives: This study seeks to examine further the relationship between MTR activity and birth defects by employing individual level exposure estimation through precise satellite data of MTR activity in the Appalachian region and maternal residence …

Uncovering Object Categories In Infant Views, Naiti S. Bhatt Jan 2021

Uncovering Object Categories In Infant Views, Naiti S. Bhatt

Scripps Senior Theses

While adults recognize objects in a near-instant, infants must learn how to categorize the objects in their visual environments. Recent work has shown that egocentric head-mounted camera videos contain rich data that illuminate the infant experience (Clerkin et al., 2017; Franchak et al., 2011; Yoshida & Smith, 2008). While past work has focused on the social information in view, in this work, we aim to characterize the objects in infants’ at-home visual environments by modifying modern computer vision models for the infant view. To do so, we collected manual annotations of objects that infants seemed to be interacting within a …

Classification Of Chess Games: An Exploration Of Classifiers For Anomaly Detection In Chess, Masudul Hoque

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Chess is a strategy board game with its inception dating back to the 15th century. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a chess boom online with 95,853,038 chess games being played during January, 2021 on lichess.com. Along with the chess boom, instances of cheating have also become more rampant. Classifications have been used for anomaly detection in different fields and thus it is a natural idea to develop classifiers to detect cheating in chess. However, there are no specific examples of this, and it is difficult to obtain data where cheating has occurred. So, in this paper, we develop 4 …

Modified Firearm Discharge Residue Analysis Utilizing Advanced Analytical Techniques, Complexing Agents, And Quantum Chemical Calculations, William J. Feeney Jan 2021

Modified Firearm Discharge Residue Analysis Utilizing Advanced Analytical Techniques, Complexing Agents, And Quantum Chemical Calculations, William J. Feeney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of gunshot residue (GSR) or firearm discharge residue (FDR) evidence faces some challenges because of instrumental and analytical limitations and the difficulties in evaluating and communicating evidentiary value. For instance, the categorization of GSR based only on elemental analysis of single, spherical particles is becoming insufficient because newer ammunition formulations produce residues with varying particle morphology and composition. Also, one common criticism about GSR practitioners is that their reports focus on the presence or absence of GSR in an item without providing an assessment of the weight of the evidence. Such reports leave the end-used with unanswered questions, …

Ensemble Protein Inference Evaluation, Kyle Lee Lucke Jan 2021

Ensemble Protein Inference Evaluation, Kyle Lee Lucke

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The Protein inference problem is becoming an increasingly important tool that aids in the characterization of complex proteomes and analysis of complex protein samples. In bottom-up shotgun proteomics experiments the metrics for evaluation (like AUC and calibration error) are based on an often imperfect target-decoy database. These metrics make the inherent assumption that all of the proteins in the target set are present in the sample being analyzed. In general, this is not the case, they are typically a mix of present and absent proteins. To objectively evaluate inference methods, protein standard datasets are used. These datasets are special in …

Impatient Customers In An Markovian Queue With Bernoulli Schedule Working Vacation Interruption And Setup Time, P. Manoharan, T. Jeeva Dec 2020

Impatient Customers In An Markovian Queue With Bernoulli Schedule Working Vacation Interruption And Setup Time, P. Manoharan, T. Jeeva

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, using probability generating function method, Impatient customers in an Markovian queue with Bernoulli schedule working vacation interruption and setup time is discussed. Customers impatience is due to the servers vacation. During the working vacation period, if there are customers in the queue, the vacation can be interrupted at a service completion instant and the server begins a regular service period with probability (1 - b) or continues the vacation with probability b. We obtain the probability generating functions of the stationary state probabilities, performance measures, sojourn time of a customer and stochastic decomposition of the queue length, …

On A Multiserver Queueing System With Customers’ Impatience Until The End Of Service Under Single And Multiple Vacation Policies, Mokhtar Kadi, Amina A. Bouchentouf, Lahcene Yahiaoui

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper deals with a multiserver queueing system with Bernoulli feedback and impatient customers (balking and reneging) under synchronous multiple and single vacation policies. Reneged customers may be retained in the system. Using probability generating functions (PGFs) technique, we formally obtain the steady-state solution of the proposed queueing system. Further, important performance measures and cost model are derived. Finally, numerical examples are presented.

Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Queueing Model With Breakdown, Instantaneous Feedback And Server Vacation, G. Ayyappan, K. Thilagavathy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, we analyze a single server queueing model with feedback, a single vacation under Bernoulli schedule, breakdown and repair. The arriving customers follow the Markovian Arrival Process (MAP) and service follow the phase-type distribution. When the server returns from vacation, if there is no one present in the system, the server will wait until the customer’s arrival. When the service completion epoch if the customer is not satisfied then that customer will get the service immediately. Under the steady-state probability vector that the total number of customers are present in the system is probed by the Matrix-analytic method. …

Creating Optimal Conditions For Reproducible Data Analysis In R With ‘Fertile’, Audrey M. Bertin, Benjamin Baumer Nov 2020

Creating Optimal Conditions For Reproducible Data Analysis In R With ‘Fertile’, Audrey M. Bertin, Benjamin Baumer

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

The advancement of scientific knowledge increasingly depends on ensuring that data-driven research is reproducible: that two people with the same data obtain the same results. However, while the necessity of reproducibility is clear, there are significant behavioral and technical challenges that impede its widespread implementation and no clear consensus on standards of what constitutes reproducibility in published research. We present fertile, an R package that focuses on a series of common mistakes programmers make while conducting data science projects in R, primarily through the RStudio integrated development environment. fertile operates in two modes: proactively, to prevent reproducibility mistakes from happening …

Multimodal Data Fusion And Attack Detection In Recommender Systems, Mehmet Aktukmak Nov 2020

Multimodal Data Fusion And Attack Detection In Recommender Systems, Mehmet Aktukmak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The commercial platforms that use recommender systems can collect relevant information to produce useful recommendations to the platform users. However, these sources usually contain missing values, imbalanced and heterogeneous data, and noisy observations. Such characteristics render the process of exploiting the information nontrivial, as one should carefully address them during the data fusion process. In addition to the degenerative characteristics, some entries can be fake, i.e., they can be the outcomes of malicious intents to manipulate the system. These entries should be eliminated before incorporation to any recommendation task. Detecting such malicious attacks quickly and accurately and then mitigating them …

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Controllability for Simple Temporal Networks with Uncertainty (STNUs) has thus far been limited to three levels: strong, dynamic, and weak. Because of this, there is currently no systematic way for an agent to assess just how far from being controllable an uncontrollable STNU is. We provide new insights inspired by a geometric interpretation of STNUs to introduce the degrees of strong and dynamic controllability - continuous metrics that measure how far a network is from being controllable. We utilize these metrics to approximate the probabilities that an STNU can be dispatched successfully offline and online respectively. We introduce new methods …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a framework for an explainable and statistically validated ensemble clustering model applied to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The objective of our analysis is to identify patient injury severity subgroups and key phenotypes that delineate these subgroups using varied clinical and computed tomography data. Explainable and statistically-validated models are essential because a data-driven identification of subgroups is an inherently multidisciplinary undertaking. In our case, this procedure yielded six distinct patient subgroups with respect to mechanism of injury, severity of presentation, anatomy, psychometric, and functional outcome. This framework for ensemble cluster analysis fully integrates statistical methods at several stages of …

Machine Learning Applications For Drug Repurposing, Hansaim Lim Sep 2020

Machine Learning Applications For Drug Repurposing, Hansaim Lim

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The cost of bringing a drug to market is astounding and the failure rate is intimidating. Drug discovery has been of limited success under the conventional reductionist model of one-drug-one-gene-one-disease paradigm, where a single disease-associated gene is identified and a molecular binder to the specific target is subsequently designed. Under the simplistic paradigm of drug discovery, a drug molecule is assumed to interact only with the intended on-target. However, small molecular drugs often interact with multiple targets, and those off-target interactions are not considered under the conventional paradigm. As a result, drug-induced side effects and adverse reactions are often neglected …

Role Of Influence In Complex Networks, Nur Dean Sep 2020

Role Of Influence In Complex Networks, Nur Dean

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Game theory is a wide ranging research area; that has attracted researchers from various fields. Scientists have been using game theory to understand the evolution of cooperation in complex networks. However, there is limited research that considers the structure and connectivity patterns in networks, which create heterogeneity among nodes. For example, due to the complex ways most networks are formed, it is common to have some highly “social” nodes, while others are highly isolated. This heterogeneity is measured through metrics referred to as “centrality” of nodes. Thus, the more “social” nodes tend to also have higher centrality.

In this thesis, …
