Mathematical Models Yield Insights Into Cnns: Applications In Natural Image Restoration And Population Genetics, Ryan Cecil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to a rise in computational power, machine learning (ML) methods have become the state-of-the-art in a variety of fields. Known to be black-box approaches, however, these methods are oftentimes not well understood. In this work, we utilize our understanding of model-based approaches to derive insights into Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In the field of Natural Image Restoration, we focus on the image denoising problem. Recent work have demonstrated the potential of mathematically motivated CNN architectures that learn both `geometric' and nonlinear higher order features and corresponding regularizers. We extend this work by showing that not only can geometric features …

Abm Simulation Model Of A Pandemic For Optimizing Vaccination Strategy, Gibeom Park

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents a process-oriented hybrid model for individuals' immune responses and interactions involving vaccination to describe the trend of contagious disease and estimate the future societal cost. The model considers "recovery" as a non-absorbing state and incorporates various infection stage states including two symptomatic states. To model contagiousness to be consistent with the current pandemic and include that the spread of a disease depends on the mobility of people, we developed an Agent-Based Simulator that fitted to the particular model used in this study and can test various what-if scenarios. We improved the simulator considerably by appying data structures …

Video Anomaly Detection: Practical Challenges For Learning Algorithms, Keval Doshi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anomaly detection in surveillance videos is attracting an increasing amount of attention. Despite the competitive performance of several existing methods, they lack theoretical performance analysis, particularly due to the complex deep neural network architectures used in decision making. Additionally, real-time decision making is an important but mostly neglected factor in this domain. Much of the existing methods that claim to be online, depend on batch or offline processing in practice. Furthermore, several critical tasks such as continual learning, model interpretability and cross-domain adaptability are completely neglected in existing works. Motivated by these research gaps, in this dissertation we discuss our …

Momentum and reversal strategies and long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks have been shown to be effective for selecting stocks to buy and sell over time periods of multiple days. To explore whether these strategies can be effective for intraday trading, their implementations were simulated using intraday price data for stocks in the S&P 500 index, collected at 1-second intervals between February 11, 2021 and March 9, 2021 inclusive. The study tested 160 variations of momentum and reversal strategies for profitability in long, short, and market-neutral portfolios, totaling 480 portfolios. …

A Machine Learning Approach To Stochastic Optimal Control, Pablo Ever Avalos May 2022

A Machine Learning Approach To Stochastic Optimal Control, Pablo Ever Avalos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Merton's portfolio optimization problem is a well-renowned problem in financial mathematics which seeks to optimize the investment decision for an investor. In the simplest situation, the market consists of a risk-less asset (i.e. a bond) that pays back a relatively low interest rate, and a risky asset (i.e. a stock) that follows a geometric Brownian motion. The optimal allocation strategy of the investor's wealth is found by optimizing the expected utility along the stochastic evolution of the market. This thesis focuses on several different applications of this optimization problem. We look at pre-constructed analytical solutions and showcase the results. We …

Deep Depression Prediction On Longitudinal Data Via Joint Anomaly Ranking And Classification, Guansong Pang, Ngoc Thien Anh Pham, Emma Baker, Rebecca Bentley, Anton Van Den Hengel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A wide variety of methods have been developed for identifying depression, but they focus primarily on measuring the degree to which individuals are suffering from depression currently. In this work we explore the possibility of predicting future depression using machine learning applied to longitudinal socio-demographic data. In doing so we show that data such as housing status, and the details of the family environment, can provide cues for predicting future psychiatric disorders. To this end, we introduce a novel deep multi-task recurrent neural network to learn time-dependent depression cues. The depression prediction task is jointly optimized with two auxiliary anomaly …

Dataset Evaluation For Data Trading Using Expected Loss And Homomorphic Encryption, Minsung Joo May 2022

Dataset Evaluation For Data Trading Using Expected Loss And Homomorphic Encryption, Minsung Joo

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

Supervised machine learning suffers from the ``garbage-in garbage-out" phenomenon where the performance of a model is limited by the quality of the data. While a myriad of data is collected every second, there is no general rigorous method of evaluating the quality of a given dataset. This hinders fair pricing of data in scenarios where a buyer may look to buy data for use with machine learning. In this work, I propose using the expected loss corresponding to a dataset as a measure of its quality, relying on Bayesian methods for uncertainty quantification. Furthermore, I present a secure multi-party computation …

An Educator’S Perspective Of The Tidyverse, Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel, Johanna Hardin, Benjamin Baumer, Amelia Mcnamara, Nicholas J. Horton, Colin W. Rundel

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Computing makes up a large and growing component of data science and statistics courses. Many of those courses, especially when taught by faculty who are statisticians by training, teach R as the programming language. A number of instructors have opted to build much of their teaching around use of the tidyverse. The tidyverse, in the words of its developers, “is a collection of R packages that share a high-level design philosophy and low-level grammar and data structures, so that learning one package makes it easier to learn the next” (Wickham et al. 2019). These shared principles have led to the …

Intra-Hour Solar Forecasting Using Cloud Dynamics Features Extracted From Ground-Based Infrared Sky Images, Guillermo Terrén-Serrano

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Due to the increasing use of photovoltaic systems, power grids are vulnerable to the projection of shadows from moving clouds. An intra-hour solar forecast provides power grids with the capability of automatically controlling the dispatch of energy, reducing the additional cost for a guaranteed, reliable supply of energy (i.e., energy storage). This dissertation introduces a novel sky imager consisting of a long-wave radiometric infrared camera and a visible light camera with a fisheye lens. The imager is mounted on a solar tracker to maintain the Sun in the center of the images throughout the day, reducing the scattering effect produced …

Split Classification Model For Complex Clustered Data, Katherine Gerot Mar 2022

Split Classification Model For Complex Clustered Data, Katherine Gerot

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Classification in high-dimensional data has generated tremendous interest in a multitude of fields. Data in higher dimensions often tend to reside in non-Euclidean metric space. This prevents Euclidean-based classification methodologies, such as regression, from reliably modeling the data. Many proposed models rely on computationally-complex embedding to convert the data to a more usable format. Others, namely the Support Vector Machine, rely on kernel manipulation to implicitly describe the "feature space" to arrive at a non-linear decision boundary. The proposed methodology in this paper seeks to classify complex data in a relatively computationally-simple and explainable manner.

Learning Latent Causal Dynamics, Weiran Yao, Guangyi Chen, Kun Zhang Feb 2022

Learning Latent Causal Dynamics, Weiran Yao, Guangyi Chen, Kun Zhang

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

One critical challenge of time-series modeling is how to learn and quickly correct the model under unknown distribution shifts. In this work, we propose a principled framework, called LiLY, to first recover time-delayed latent causal variables and identify their relations from measured temporal data under different distribution shifts. The correction step is then formulated as learning the low-dimensional change factors with a few samples from the new environment, leveraging the identified causal structure. Specifically, the framework factorizes unknown distribution shifts into transition distribution changes caused by fixed dynamics and time-varying latent causal relations, and by global changes in observation. We …

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Gradient-free/zeroth-order methods for black-box convex optimization have been extensively studied in the last decade with the main focus on oracle calls complexity. In this paper, besides the oracle complexity, we focus also on iteration complexity, and propose a generic approach that, based on optimal first-order methods, allows to obtain in a black-box fashion new zeroth-order algorithms for non-smooth convex optimization problems. Our approach not only leads to optimal oracle complexity, but also allows to obtain iteration complexity similar to first-order methods, which, in turn, allows to exploit parallel computations to accelerate the convergence of our algorithms. We also elaborate on …

Don’T Beep At Me: Using Google Maps Apis To Reduce Driving Anxiety, Daniel Chechelnitsky

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

Stress while driving is a significant issue that causes automobile incidents. Along with the physical injuries, there is often baggage and trauma associated with these accidents. Wearable health monitoring technology, like Smartwatches, has a real possibility to help people further understand the stress inducing processes of driving. Thus to help with this issue, I propose a Google Maps app extension called: "Don't Beep At Me". This project creates a map that is layered by heart rate instead of speed limit and has great potential to be useful for reducing driving anxiety.
