The Role Of Feedback Within Scrum For Engineering Department Operations, Massood Towhidnejad, Omar Ochoa, James J. Pembridge, Radu Babiceanu
The Role Of Feedback Within Scrum For Engineering Department Operations, Massood Towhidnejad, Omar Ochoa, James J. Pembridge, Radu Babiceanu
Posters
The Scrum framework is built on the principles of inspection and adaptation. Feedback drives the inspection process, and the team adapts based on that feedback to optimize its performance and outcomes. Within engineering departments, Scrum requires departments to examine how and when feedback is obtained to ensure that the department is remaining agile. This poster illustrates the role of feedback within two Scrum teams, one focused on student success and the other focused on faculty rewards and incentives. The two cases emphasize the need for continuous introspection at team and department levels.
The Combination Approaches For One Class Classifier Ensembles For Software Defect Datasets, Maitha Mohammed Alkalbani
The Combination Approaches For One Class Classifier Ensembles For Software Defect Datasets, Maitha Mohammed Alkalbani
Theses
The classification of imbalanced datasets poses significant challenges, becoming a crucial topic in ML, particularly when standard algorithms struggle with accurate classification. In OCC, classifiers may encounter objects from ensembles of one class, leading to outlier scores generated at different scales. Additionally, there is a lack of a unified combination method, with many experiments resorting to using an average as the combination method. The thesis aims to investigate the effectiveness of normalization and unnormalized outlier scores on OCC ensembles. Furthermore, we conducted a comparative study of different types of combination methods. We used k-means clustering as OCC model, and the …

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) automating critical public infrastructure face a pervasive threat of attack, motivating research into different types of countermeasures. Assessing the effectiveness of these countermeasures is challenging, however, as benchmarks are difficult to construct manually, existing automated testing solutions often make unrealistic assumptions, and blindly fuzzing is ineffective at finding attacks due to the enormous search spaces and resource requirements. In this work, we propose active sensor fuzzing , a fully automated approach for building test suites without requiring any a prior knowledge about a CPS. Our approach employs active learning techniques. Applied to a real-world water treatment system, …

Designing A Human-Centered Intelligent System To Monitor & Explain Abnormal Patterns Of Older Adults, Min Hun Lee, Daniel P. Siewiorek, Alexandre Bernardino
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Older adult care technologies are increasingly explored to support the independent living of older adults by monitoring their abnormal activities and informing caregivers to provide intervention if necessary. However, the adoption of these technologies remains challenging due to several factors (e.g. lack of usability). In this work, we present a human-centered, intelligent system for older adult care. Our proposed designs of the system were created based on the findings from a focus group session with caregivers. This system monitors the abnormal activities of an older adult using wireless motion sensors and machine learning models. In addition, unlike previous work that …

In microservice architectures, developers can face significant problems understanding the structure of the system and how the different microservices interact. This difficulty results from the distributed nature of the system, and the abundance of inter-service communication within the architecture. We want to determine if network visualisations can address these problems given their ability to convey complex topologies. However, to identify what architectural characteristics should be visualised, and how this should be done, we must first determine the needs of microservice developers. This paper identifies and presents the impact and frequency of problems faced by a cohort of microservice developers using …

Software logs record system activities, aiding maintainers in identifying the underlying causes for failures and enabling prompt mitigation actions. However, maintainers need to inspect a large volume of daily logs to identify the anomalous logs that reveal failure details for further diagnosis. Thus, how to automatically distinguish these anomalous logs from normal logs becomes a critical problem. Existing approaches alleviate the burden on software maintainers, but they are built upon an improper yet critical assumption: logging statements in the software remain unchanged. While software keeps evolving, our empirical study finds that evolving software brings three challenges: log parsing errors, evolving …

Over the past 5 years, the number of DoD software organizations that employ nontraditional organizational structures has increased. These organizations, commonly referred to as software factories, often employ the network-based organizational structures found within high-technology industries. This article details ways in which network analysis techniques can be used to create a big picture view of these nontraditional organizations. Drawing on methodologies employed by network researchers, the authors develop and present an interorganizational analysis process that highlights a program's social and economic structures. Following the case history approach, they demonstrate the applicability of this approach by analyzing an emergent DoD software …

Supporting Artefact Awareness In Partially-Replicated Workspaces, Emran Poh, Anthony Tang, Jenanie S. Lee, Zhao Shengdong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Using Cross Reality (CR) approaches for remote collaboration will often result in partially-replicated workspaces. Here, workspace artefacts are not equally accessible - i.e. a physical artefact may only be manipulated by one collaborator - and in general, the artefacts become desynchronised over time. In this paper, we introduce a framework for artefact awareness that can help collaborators maintain an understanding of each others' manipulations with workspace artefacts. We illustrate our design explorations through sketches, and outline how we aim to study the effectiveness and utility of artefact awareness in cross reality remote collaboration. In our work, we expect to show …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Encountering outdated documentation is not a rare occurrence for developers and users in the software engineering community. To ensure that software documentation is up-to-date, developers often have to manually check whether the documentation needs to be updated whenever changes are made to the source code. In our previous work, we proposed an approach to automatically detect outdated code element references in software repositories and found that more than a quarter of the 1000 most popular projects on GitHub contained at least one outdated reference. In this paper, we present a GitHub Actions tool that builds on our previous work’s approach …

Ubisurface: A Robotic Touch Surface For Supporting Mid-Air Planar Interactions In Room-Scale Vr, Ryota Gomi, Kazuki Takashima, Yuki Onishi, Kazuyuki Fujita, Yoshifumi Kitamura
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Room-scale VR has been considered an alternative to physical office workspaces. For office activities, users frequently require planar input methods, such as typing or handwriting, to quickly record annotations to virtual content. However, current off-The-shelf VR HMD setups rely on mid-Air interactions, which can cause arm fatigue and decrease input accuracy. To address this issue, we propose UbiSurface, a robotic touch surface that can automatically reposition itself to physically present a virtual planar input surface (VR whiteboard, VR canvas, etc.) to users and to permit them to achieve accurate and fatigue-less input while walking around a virtual room. We design …

The automation of an increasingly large number of software engineering tasks is becoming possible thanks to Machine Learning (ML). One foundational building block in the application of ML to software artifacts is the representation of these artifacts ( e.g. , source code or executable code) into a form that is suitable for learning. Traditionally, researchers and practitioners have relied on manually selected features, based on expert knowledge, for the task at hand. Such knowledge is sometimes imprecise and generally incomplete. To overcome this limitation, many studies have leveraged representation learning, delegating to ML itself the job of automatically devising suitable …

Most online code snippets do not run. This means that developers looking to reuse code from online sources must manually find and fix errors. We present an approach for automatically evaluating and correcting errors in Node.js code snippets: Node Code Correction (NCC). NCC leverages the ability of the TypeScript compiler to generate errors and inform code corrections through the combination of TypeScript’s builtin codefixes, our own targeted fixes, and deletion of erroneous lines. Compared to existing approaches using linters, our findings suggest that NCC is capable of detecting a larger number of errors per snippet and more error types, and …

AI-enabled collaborative robots are designed to be used in close collaboration with humans, thus requiring stringent safety standards and quick response times. Adversarial attacks pose a significant threat to the deep learning models of these systems, making it crucial to develop methods to improve the models' robustness against them. Adversarial training is one approach to improve their robustness: it works by augmenting the training data with adversarial examples. This, unfortunately, comes with the cost of increased computational overhead and extended training times. In this work, we balance the need for additional adversarial data with the goal of minimizing the training …

Soft errors have become one of the main concerns for the resilience of HPC applications, as these errors can cause HPC applications to generate serious outcomes such as silent data corruption (SDC). Many approaches have been proposed to analyze the resilience of HPC applications. However, existing studies rarely address the challenges of analysis result perception. Specifically, resilience analysis techniques often produce a massive volume of unstructured data, making it difficult for programmers to perform resilience analysis due to non-intuitive raw data. Furthermore, different analysis models produce diverse results with multiple levels of detail, which can create obstacles to compare and …

Automated program repair (APR) has been gaining ground with substantial effort devoted to the area, opening up many challenges and opportunities. One such challenge is that the state-of-the-art repair techniques often resort to incomplete specifications, e.g., test cases that witness buggy behavior, to generate repairs. In practice, bug-exposing test cases are often available when: (1) developers, at the same time of (or after) submitting bug fixes, create the tests to assure the correctness of the fixes, or (2) regression errors occur. The former case – a scenario commonly used for creating popular bug datasets – however, may not be suitable …

Towards An Effective And Interpretable Refinement Approach For Dnn Verification, Jiaying Li, Guangdong Bai, Long H. Pham, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently, several abstraction refinement techniques have been proposed to improve the verification precision for deep neural networks (DNNs). However, these techniques usually take many refinement steps to verify a property and the refinement decision in each step is hard to interpret, thus hindering their analysis, reasoning and optimization. In this work, we propose SURGEON, a novel DNN verification refinement approach that is both effective and interpretable, allowing analyst to understand why and how each refinement decision is made. The main insight is to leverage the ‘interpretable’ nature of debugging processes and formulate the verification refinement problem as a debugging problem. Given …

Life scientists frequently write computer code when doing research. Computer programming can aid researchers in performing tasks that are not supported by existing tools. Programming can also help researchers to implement analytical logic in a way that documents their steps and thus enables others to repeat those steps. Many educational resources are available to teach computer programming, but this skill remains challenging for many researchers and students to master. Artificial-intelligence tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT are able to interpret human-language requests to generate code. Accordingly, we evaluated the extent to which this technology might be used to perform programming tasks described …

While computer science identity development has been examined in several studies, there is much to learn about the development of multilingual students’ computer science (CS) identities. To develop strong CS identities, multilingual students must engage in culturally and linguistically sustaining curriculum, pedagogy, and interaction that draws from their rich and varied resources. This theoretical paper is grounded in a justice-centered, asset-based framework that views the traditions and practices in students’ cultures and communities as strong contributors to knowledge construction in STEM. We draw on multiple studies exploring multilingual student CS identity development to better understand how their personal, familial, community-based, …

Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code—supporting symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged at the expense of run-time performance. Though hybrid approaches aim for the “best of both worlds,” using them effectively requires subtle considerations to make code amenable to safe, accurate, and efficient graph execution. We present our ongoing work on automated refactoring that assists developers in specifying whether …

Unsupervised learning systems using clustering have gained significant attention for numerous applications due to their unique ability to discover patterns and structures in large unlabeled datasets. However, their effectiveness highly depends on their configuration, which requires domain-specific expertise and often involves numerous manual trials. Specifically, selecting appropriate algorithms and hyperparameters adds to the com- plexity of the configuration process. In this paper, we propose, apply, and assess an automated approach (AutoConf) for config- uring unsupervised learning systems using clustering, leveraging metamorphic testing and Bayesian optimization. Metamorphic testing is utilized to verify the configurations of unsupervised learning systems by applying a …
