Introducing Programmers To Pair Programming: A Controlled Experiment, A. S. M. Sajeev, Subhajit Datta Jun 2013

Introducing Programmers To Pair Programming: A Controlled Experiment, A. S. M. Sajeev, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pair programming is a key characteristic of the Extreme Programming (XP) method. Through a controlled experiment we investigate pair programming behaviour of programmers without prior experience in XP. The factors investigated are: (a) characteristics of pair programming that are less favored (b) perceptions of team effectiveness and how they relate to product quality, and (c) whether it is better to train a pair by giving routine tasks first or by giving complex tasks first. Our results show that: (a) the least liked aspects of pair programming were having to share the screen, keyboard and mouse, and having to switch between …

Misheard Me Oronyminator: Using Oronyms To Validate The Correctness Of Frequency Dictionaries, Jennifer G. Hughes Jun 2013

Misheard Me Oronyminator: Using Oronyms To Validate The Correctness Of Frequency Dictionaries, Jennifer G. Hughes

Master's Theses

In the field of speech recognition, an algorithm must learn to tell the difference between "a nice rock" and "a gneiss rock". These identical-sounding phrases are called oronyms. Word frequency dictionaries are often used by speech recognition systems to help resolve phonetic sequences with more than one possible orthographic phrase interpretation, by looking up which oronym of the root phonetic sequence contains the most-common words.

Our paper demonstrates a technique used to validate word frequency dictionary values. We chose to use frequency values from the UNISYN dictionary, which tallies each word on a per-occurance basis, using a proprietary text corpus, …

Web 2.0 Technologies In The Software Development Process., Jocelyn Borgers

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Software engineers must communicate with many different people, likely in different locations, in order to create a successful piece of software. Social media can be used to communicate quickly and efficiently to minimize miscommunications and facilitate collaboration in the software development process. Research in this area has been sparse but significant because initial findings show that social media is being used in innovative ways to improve software development. Surveys of what social media some companies are currently using along with information about new social media systems indicate possible uses for these technologies on future software development projects such as documentation …

Building Capable, Energy-Efficient, Flexible Visualization And Sensing Clusters From Commodity Tablets, Thomas Delgado Dias, Xian Yan, Konstantin Läufer, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We explore the application of clusters of commodity tablet devices to problems spanning a “trilogy” of concerns: visualization, sensing, and computation. We conjecture that such clusters provide a low-cost, energy-efficient, flexible, and ultimately effective platform to tackle a wide range of problems within this trilogy. This is a work in progress, and we now elaborate our position and give a preliminary status report.

A wide range of Android tablet devices are available in terms of price and capabilities. “You get what you pay for” w.r.t. display resolution, sensors, and chipset---corresponding to the trilogy. $200 gets one a 1280x800-pixel touch display, …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The goal of the Loyola Weather Service (lws) project is to design and build a system of functioning environmental monitoring widgets that can intelligently and autonomously control the environment around them based on set thresholds and triggers. The widgets will also have the ability to aggregate their data and easily display this data in various ways: through a user interface in the room that the widget is placed, via a web application, and programmatically via a RESTful web service.

Cjc: An Extensible Checker For The Cleanjava Annotation Language, Cesar Yeep May 2013

Cjc: An Extensible Checker For The Cleanjava Annotation Language, Cesar Yeep

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

CleanJava is a formal annotation language for the Java programming language to support a Cleanroom-style functional program verification technique that views programs as mathematical functions. It needs a suite of support tools including a checker that can parse annotations and check them for syntactic and static semantic correctness. The two key requirements of the checker are flexibility and extensibility. Since the language is still under development and refinement, it should be flexible to facilitate language experimentation and accommodate language changes. It should be also extensible to provide base code for developing more advanced support tools like an automated theorem prover. …

Ikriya: Simulating Software Quality Enhancement With Selected Replacement Policies, Sindhu Dharani Murthy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The quality of information systems in any organization helps to determine the
efficiency of the organization. Many organizations maintain a custom software portfolio, whose quality is important to the organization. Management would like to optimize the portfolio’s quality. Decisions about software replacement or enhancement are made based on organizational needs and priorities. The development resources allocated help in determining the quality of new software, and should be put to optimal use. Enhancing existing software might sound cheap and easy but it is not always efficient. This thesis proposes a simulation model - iKriya - for this problem. It explores the …

Efficient Architectures For Retrieving Mixed Data With Rest Architecture Style And Html5 Support, Koushik Maddipudi May 2013

Efficient Architectures For Retrieving Mixed Data With Rest Architecture Style And Html5 Support, Koushik Maddipudi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Software as a service is an emerging but important aspect of the web. Web
Services play a vital role in providing it. Web Services are commonly provided in one of two architectural styles: a "REpresentational State Transfer" (REST), or using the "Simple Object Access Protocol" (SOAP.) Originally most web content was text and small images. But more recent services involve complex data structures including text, images, audio, and video. The task of optimizing data to provide delivery of these structures is a complex one, involving both theoretical and practical aspects. In this thesis work, I have considered two architectures developed …

An Automatic Framework For Embryonic Localization Using Edges In A Scale Space, Zachary Bessinger May 2013

An Automatic Framework For Embryonic Localization Using Edges In A Scale Space, Zachary Bessinger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Localization of Drosophila embryos in images is a fundamental step in an automatic computational system for the exploration of gene-gene interaction on Drosophila. Contour extraction of embryonic images is challenging due to many variations in embryonic images. In the thesis work, we develop a localization framework based on the analysis of connected components of edge pixels in a scale space. We propose criteria to select optimal scales for embryonic localization. Furthermore, we propose a scale mapping strategy to compress the range of a scale space in order to improve the efficiency of the localization framework. The effectiveness of the proposed …

Energy-Neutral Scheduling And Forwarding In Environmentally-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks, Alvin Cerdena Valera, Weng Seng Soh, Hwee-Pink Tan May 2013

Energy-Neutral Scheduling And Forwarding In Environmentally-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks, Alvin Cerdena Valera, Weng Seng Soh, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In environmentally-powered wireless sensor networks (EPWSNs), low latency wakeup scheduling and packet forwarding is challenging due to dynamic duty cycling, posing time-varying sleep latencies and necessitating the use of dynamic wakeup schedules. We show that the variance of the intervals between receiving wakeup slots affects the expected sleep latency: when the variance of the intervals is low (high), the expected latency is low (high). We therefore propose a novel scheduling scheme that uses the bit-reversal permutation sequence (BRPS) – a finite integer sequence that positions receiving wakeup slots as evenly as possible to reduce the expected sleep latency. At the …

Accelerating Optimistic Hla-Based Simulations In Virtual Execution Environments, Zengxiang Li, Xiaorong Li, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Wentong Cai, Stephen John Turner May 2013

Accelerating Optimistic Hla-Based Simulations In Virtual Execution Environments, Zengxiang Li, Xiaorong Li, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Wentong Cai, Stephen John Turner

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High Level Architecture (HLA)-based simulations employing optimistic synchronization allows federates to process event and to advance simulation time freely at the risk of over-optimistic execution and execution rollbacks. In this paper, an adaptive resource provisioning system is proposed to accelerate optimistic HLA-based simulations in Virtual Execution Environment (VEE). A performance monitor is introduced using a middleware approach to measure the performance of individual federates transparently to the simulation application. Based on the performance measurements, a resource manager distributes the available computational resources to the federates, making them advance simulation time with comparable speeds. Our proposed approach is evaluated using a …

Tag Recommendation In Software Information Sites, Xin Xia, David Lo, Xinyu Wang, Bo Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, software engineers use a variety of online media to search and become informed of new and interesting technologies, and to learn from and help one another. We refer to these kinds of online media which help software engineers improve their performance in software development, maintenance and test processes as software information sites. It is common to see tags in software information sites and many sites allow users to tag various objects with their own words. Users increasingly use tags to describe the most important features of their posted contents or projects. In this paper, we propose TagCombine, an automatic …

Analyzing The Friendliness Of Exchanges In An Online Software Developer Community, Brendan Cleary, Margaret-Anne Storey, Carlos Gómez, Leif Singer, Christoph Treude May 2013

Analyzing The Friendliness Of Exchanges In An Online Software Developer Community, Brendan Cleary, Margaret-Anne Storey, Carlos Gómez, Leif Singer, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many online communities struggle with conflicts — e.g. between newcomers and elders — at some point. In July 2012, the Stack Exchange organization attempted to assess the overall “niceness” of the Stack Overflow community by rating the “friendliness” of 7,000 comments made on the site over a 4 year period. We performed a deeper examination of the comment dataset published by Stack Exchange. We find a high degree of comment repetition in the Stack Overflow database and suggest some simple heuristics that may help in automatically identifying unfriendly comments, providing managers of developer communities with simple means that could counter …

Mining Sql Injection And Cross Site Scripting Vulnerabilities Using Hybrid Program Analysis, Lwin Khin Shar, Hee Beng Kuan Tan, Lionel C. Briand May 2013

Mining Sql Injection And Cross Site Scripting Vulnerabilities Using Hybrid Program Analysis, Lwin Khin Shar, Hee Beng Kuan Tan, Lionel C. Briand

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In previous work, we proposed a set of static attributes that characterize input validation and input sanitization code patterns. We showed that some of the proposed static attributes are significant predictors of SQL injection and cross site scripting vulnerabilities. Static attributes have the advantage of reflecting general properties of a program. Yet, dynamic attributes collected from execution traces may reflect more specific code characteristics that are complementary to static attributes. Hence, to improve our initial work, in this paper, we propose the use of dynamic attributes to complement static attributes in vulnerability prediction. Furthermore, since existing work relies on supervised …

Dynamic Synthesis Of Local Time Requirement For Service Composition, Tian Huat Tan, Étienne André, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Manman Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Service composition makes use of existing servicebased applications as components to achieve a business goal. In time critical business environments, the response time of a service is crucial, which is also reflected as a clause in service level agreements (SLAs) between service providers and service users. To allow the composite service to fulfill the response time requirement as promised, it is important to find a feasible set of component services, such that their response time could collectively allow the satisfaction of the response time of the composite service. In this work, we propose a fully automated approach to synthesize the …

Communication Artifacts And Interaction Evaluation For Requirements Engineering, Miloslava Plachkinova May 2013

Communication Artifacts And Interaction Evaluation For Requirements Engineering, Miloslava Plachkinova

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This paper aims to answer an important question regarding the development of new information systems (IS): "What is the predominant factor for the selection of communication artifacts for requirements engineering (RE)?". Many researchers have focused on the RE and communication as separate disciplines, but little or no research addressed the RE communication issues. These problems are important because they often lead to misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the gathered requirements. We develop expectations about the RE communication process based on prior literature from both disciplines and we test them through several case studies. Our methodology consists of analysis of six case …

A Polyglot Approach To Bioinformatics Data Integration: Phylogenetic Analysis Of Hiv-1, Steven Reisman, Catherine Putonti, George K. Thiruvathukal, Konstantin Läufer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

RNA-interference has potential therapeutic use against HIV-1 by targeting highly-functional mRNA sequences that contribute to the virulence of the virus. Empirical work has shown that within cell lines, all of the HIV-1 genes are affected by RNAi-induced gene silencing. While promising, inherent in this treatment is the fact that RNAi sequences must be highly specific. HIV, however, mutates rapidly, leading to the evolution of viral escape mutants. In fact, such strains are under strong selection to include mutations within the targeted region, evading the RNAi therapy and thus increasing the virus’ fitness in the host. Taking a phylogenetic approach, we …

Simulating Inflation, Ryan M. Heathcote Apr 2013

Simulating Inflation, Ryan M. Heathcote

Senior Honors Theses

Inflation is a common problem in modern economics, and it seems to persist, requiring government financial policy intervention on a regular basis in order to properly manage. The mechanics of inflation are difficult to understand, since the best metric modern society has for inflation involves taking samples of prices across the country. A simulation can give deeper insight into more than the mere fact that prices rise over time: a simulation can help to answer the “why” question. The problem with this statement is that developing a simulation is not as simple as writing some code. A simulation is developed …

Sensual Cultures: Exploring Sensory Orientation, Lauren Sonnenstrahl Benedict Apr 2013

Sensual Cultures: Exploring Sensory Orientation, Lauren Sonnenstrahl Benedict

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

We use our senses every day, consciously or unconsciously, based on our cultural needs and preferences. These sensory orientations shape and are shaped by what a given culture defines as acceptable. For this reason, different sensory orientations result in different strengths and areas of emphasis and de-emphasis. Becoming aware of different sensory orientations and their associated cultures allows us to realize what we are missing in our own sensory orientations that inform our cultural habits. Familiarity with various sensory orientations may cultivate greater cultural acceptance as well. To analyze and illustrate such differences, an educational app for iPads was created …

Towards Omnidirectional Passive Human Detection, Zimu Zhou, Zheng Yang, Chenshu Wu, Longfei Shangguan, Yunhao Liu Apr 2013

Towards Omnidirectional Passive Human Detection, Zimu Zhou, Zheng Yang, Chenshu Wu, Longfei Shangguan, Yunhao Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Passive human detection and localization serve as key enablers for various pervasive applications such as smart space, human-computer interaction and asset security. The primary concern in devising scenario-tailored detecting systems is the coverage of their monitoring units. In conventional radio-based schemes, the basic unit tends to demonstrate a directional coverage, even if the underlying devices are all equipped with omnidirectional antennas. Such an inconsistency stems from the link-centric architecture, creating an anisotropic wireless propagating environment. To achieve an omnidirectional coverage while retaining the link-centric architecture, we propose the concept of Omnidirectional Passive Human Detection, and investigate to harness the PHY …

Predicting Sql Injection And Cross Site Scripting Vulnerabilities Through Mining Input Sanitization Patterns, Lwin Khin Shar, Hee Beng Kuan Tan Apr 2013

Predicting Sql Injection And Cross Site Scripting Vulnerabilities Through Mining Input Sanitization Patterns, Lwin Khin Shar, Hee Beng Kuan Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

ContextSQL injection (SQLI) and cross site scripting (XSS) are the two most common and serious web application vulnerabilities for the past decade. To mitigate these two security threats, many vulnerability detection approaches based on static and dynamic taint analysis techniques have been proposed. Alternatively, there are also vulnerability prediction approaches based on machine learning techniques, which showed that static code attributes such as code complexity measures are cheap and useful predictors. However, current prediction approaches target general vulnerabilities. And most of these approaches locate vulnerable code only at software component or file levels. Some approaches also involve process attributes that …

Arraytrack: A Fine-Grained Indoor Location System, Jie Xiong, Kyle Jamieson Apr 2013

Arraytrack: A Fine-Grained Indoor Location System, Jie Xiong, Kyle Jamieson

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With myriad augmented reality, social networking, and retail shopping applications all on the horizon for the mobile handheld, a fast and accurate location technology will become key to a rich user experience. When roaming outdoors, users can usually count on a clear GPS signal for accurate location, but indoors, GPS often fades, and so up until recently, mobiles have had to rely mainly on rather coarse-grained signal strength readings. What has changed this status quo is the recent trend of dramatically increasing numbers of antennas at the indoor access point, mainly to bolster capacity and coverage with multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) …

Software Project Risk Assessment And Effort Contingency Model Based On Cocomo Cost Factors, Luiz Fernando Capretz Mar 2013

Software Project Risk Assessment And Effort Contingency Model Based On Cocomo Cost Factors, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

In the early stages of a software development life cycle, effort estimation plays a critical role in helping project managers predict the demands with respect to the budgeting, scheduling, and the allocation of resources. In this situation, the ideal estimation calculation should provide an approximate value figure, which will consist of a base estimation value plus a contingency allowance value, which will cover the risks and assumptions necessary for particular estimation calculations.

However, most software effort estimation methodologies, which include the COCOMO model, provide a fixed effort estimate value instead of an approximate value, and consequently the existing effort estimation …

Object-Oriented Programming: Some History, And Challenges For The Next Fifty Years, Andrew P. Black Mar 2013

Object-Oriented Programming: Some History, And Challenges For The Next Fifty Years, Andrew P. Black

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Object-oriented programming is inextricably linked to the pioneering work of Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard on the design of the Simula language, which started at the Norwegian Computing Centre in the Spring of 1961. However, object-orientation, as we think of it today—fifty years later—is the result of a complex interplay of ideas, constraints and people. Dahl and Nygaard would certainly recognize it as their progeny, but might also be amazed at how much it has grown up. This article is based on a lecture given on 22nd August 2011, on the occasion of the scientific opening of the Ole-Johan …
