Matlabta: A Style Critiquer For Novice Engineering Students, Marissa L. Walther
Matlabta: A Style Critiquer For Novice Engineering Students, Marissa L. Walther
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Novice programmers, considered to be those who have yet to understand the fundamentals of programming, exist in both engineering and computing fields. Within computing, various resources exist to help novice programmers understand fundamentals and style guidelines such as WebTA, a code critique program that gives Java students feedback about their error and style issues. There is, however, a gap in automated code critique for MATLAB, a programming language that is popular in the engineering community. When it comes to MATLAB, there are not many programs that help novices understand their errors, and even fewer that help them understand style guidelines. …
Towards Large-Scale And Robust Code Authorship Identification With Deep Feature Learning, Mohammed Abuhamad
Towards Large-Scale And Robust Code Authorship Identification With Deep Feature Learning, Mohammed Abuhamad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Successful software authorship identification has both software forensics applications and privacy implications. However, the process requires an efficient extraction of quality authorship attributes. The extraction of such attributes is very challenging due to several factors such as the variety of software formats, number of available samples, and possible obfuscation or adversarial manipulation. We focus on software authorship identification from three central perspectives: large-scale single-authored software, real-world multi-authored software, and the robustness assessment of code authorship identification methods against adversarial attacks. First, we propose DL-CAIS, a deep Learning-based approach for software authorship attribution, that facilitates large-scale, format-independent, language-oblivious, and obfuscation-resilient software …
Generating Peptide Mass Spectrometry Ground Truth Data, Jessica L. Henning, Rob Smith
Generating Peptide Mass Spectrometry Ground Truth Data, Jessica L. Henning, Rob Smith
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Very few quantitative evaluations exist for precursor mass spectrometry data due to the lack of tools for enabling the manual feature finding necessary to generate this data. Other lacks the ability to capture, edit, save, and view precursor mass spectrometry data. We present JS-MS 2.0, a software suite that provides a dependency-free, browser-based, one click, cross-platform solution for creating precursor ground truth. The software retains the first version’s capacity for loading, viewing, and navigating MS1 data in 2- and 3-D, and adds tools for capturing, editing, saving and viewing isotopic envelope and extracted isotopic chromatogram features. The software can also …

Remote Communication In Wilderness Search And Rescue: Implications For The Design Of Emergency Distributed-Collaboration Tools For Network-Sparse Environments, Brennan Jones, Anthony Tang, Carman Neustaedter
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Wilderness search and rescue (WSAR) requires careful communication between workers in different locations. To understand the contexts from which WSAR workers communicate and the challenges they face, we interviewed WSAR workers and observed a mock-WSAR scenario. Our findings illustrate that WSAR workers face challenges in maintaining a shared mental model. This is primarily done through distributed communication using two-way radios and cell phones for text and photo messaging; yet both implicit and explicit communication suffer. WSAR workers send messages for various reasons and share different types of information with varying levels of urgency. This warrants the use of multiple communication …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Production planning in the manufacturing industry is crucial for fully utilizing factory resources (e.g., machines, raw materials and workers) and reducing costs. With the advent of industry 4.0, plenty of data recording the status of factory resources have been collected and further involved in production planning, which brings an unprecedented opportunity to understand, evaluate and adjust complex production plans through a data-driven approach. However, developing a systematic analytics approach for production planning is challenging due to the large volume of production data, the complex dependency between products, and unexpected changes in the market and the plant. Previous studies only provide …

Towards Automated Infographic Design: Deep Learning-Based Auto-Extraction Of Extensible Timeline, Zhutian Chen, Yun Wang, Qianwen Wang, Yong Wang, Huamin Qu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Designers need to consider not only perceptual effectiveness but also visual styles when creating an infographic. This process can be difficult and time consuming for professional designers, not to mention non-expert users, leading to the demand for automated infographics design. As a first step, we focus on timeline infographics, which have been widely used for centuries. We contribute an end-to-end approach that automatically extracts an extensible timeline template from a bitmap image. Our approach adopts a deconstruction and reconstruction paradigm. At the deconstruction stage, we propose a multi-task deep neural network that simultaneously parses two kinds of information from a …
Automated And Standardized Tools For Realistic, Generic Musculoskeletal Model Development, Trevor Rees Moon
Automated And Standardized Tools For Realistic, Generic Musculoskeletal Model Development, Trevor Rees Moon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Human movement is an instinctive yet challenging task that involves complex interactions between the neuromusculoskeletal system and its interaction with the surrounding environment. One key obstacle in the understanding of human locomotion is the availability and validity of experimental data or computational models. Corresponding measurements describing the relationships of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems and their dynamics are highly variable. Likewise, computational models and musculoskeletal models in particular are vitally dependent on these measurements to define model behavior and mechanics. These measurements are often sparse and disparate due to unsystematic data collection containing variable methodologies and reporting conventions. To date, …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
The smart grid employs computing and communication technologies to embed intelligence into the power grid and, consequently, make the grid more efficient. Machine learning (ML) has been applied for tasks that are important for smart grid operation including energy consumption and generation forecasting, anomaly detection, and state estimation. These ML solutions commonly require sufficient historical data; however, this data is often not readily available because of reasons such as data collection costs and concerns regarding security and privacy. This paper introduces a recurrent generative adversarial network (R-GAN) for generating realistic energy consumption data by learning from real data. Generativea adversarial …
Automating Software Changes Via Recommendation Systems, Xiaoyu Liu
Automating Software Changes Via Recommendation Systems, Xiaoyu Liu
Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations
As the complexity of software systems is growing tremendously, it came with increasingly sophisticated data provided during development. The systematic and large-scale accumulation of software engineering data opened up new opportunities that infer information appropriately can be helpful to software development in a given context. This type of intelligent software development tools came to be known as recommendation systems.
Recommendation Systems in Software Change (RSSCs) share commonalities with conventional recommendation systems: mainly in their usage model, the usual reliance on data mining, and in the predictive nature of their functionality. So a major challenge for designing RSSCs is to automatically …

The Effects Of Automated Grading On Computer Science Courses At The University Of New Orleans, Jerod F A Dunbar
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This is a study of the impacts of the incorporation, into certain points of the Computer Science degree program at the University of New Orleans, of Course Management software with an Autograding component. The software in question, developed at Carnegie Mellon University, is called “Autolab.” We begin by dissecting Autolab in order to gain an understanding of its inner workings. We can then take out understanding of its functionality and apply that to an examination of fundamental changes to courses in the time since they incorporated the software. With that, we then compare Drop, Failure, Withdrawal rate data from before …
Application Development For Goods Management System Towards Waste Minimization Options, Wan Ahmad Nadzim
Application Development For Goods Management System Towards Waste Minimization Options, Wan Ahmad Nadzim
Student Works (2020-2029)
Waste is a global concern. Increasing waste generation levels are causing the increase of waste management costs. In fact, the greatest costs of waste are measured by its impacts to the environment, society and economy. Prevention is better than cure—since all wastes come from goods, thus the best way to manage wastes is to manage goods. An application model of goods management system has been developed using GIS (Geographic Information System) and app prototyping. The primary purpose of goods management is to maximize goods and minimize waste by promoting reduction and reuse. GIS was used to perform spatial analyses on …
Optimal Management Of Virtual Infrastructures Under Flexible Cloud Service Agreements, Zhiling Guo, Jin Li, Ram Ramesh
Optimal Management Of Virtual Infrastructures Under Flexible Cloud Service Agreements, Zhiling Guo, Jin Li, Ram Ramesh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A cloud service agreement entails the provisioning of a required set of virtual infrastructure resources at a specified level of availability to a client. The agreement also lays out the price charged to the client and a penalty to the provider when the assured availability is not met. The availability assurance involves backup resource provisioning, and the provider needs to allocate backups cost-effectively by balancing the resource-provisioning costs with the potential penalty costs. We develop stochastic dynamic optimization models of the backup resource-provisioning problem, leading to cost-effective resource-management policies in different practical settings. We present two sets of dynamic provisioning …

Multimodal Mobile Sensing Systems For Physiological And Psychological Assessment, Nguyen Phan Sinh Huynh
Multimodal Mobile Sensing Systems For Physiological And Psychological Assessment, Nguyen Phan Sinh Huynh
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Sensing systems for monitoring physiological and psychological states have been studied extensively in both academic and industry research for different applications across various domains. However, most of the studies have been done in the lab environment with controlled and complicated sensor setup, which is only suitable for serious healthcare applications in which the obtrusiveness and immobility can be compromised in a trade-off for accurate clinical screening or diagnosing. The recent substantial development of mobile devices with embedded miniaturized sensors are now allowing new opportunities to adapt and develop such sensing systems in the mobile context. The ability to sense physiological …
Enhanced Gesture Sensing Using Battery-Less Wearable Motion Trackers, Huy Vu Tran
Enhanced Gesture Sensing Using Battery-Less Wearable Motion Trackers, Huy Vu Tran
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Wearable devices are gaining in popularity, but are presently used primarily for productivity-related functions (such as calling people or discreetly receiving notifications) or for physiological sensing. However, wearable devices are still not widely used for a wider set of sensing-based applications, even though their potential is enormous. Wearable devices can enable a variety of novel applications. For example, wrist-worn and/or finger-worn devices could be viable controllers for real-time AR/VR games and applications, and can be used for real-time gestural tracking to support rehabilitative patient therapy or training of sports personnel. There are, however, a key set of impediments towards realizing …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As Andreessen stated “software is eating the world” (Andreessen 2011). Most of todays industries, from engineering, manufacturing, logistics to health, are run on enterprise software applications and can efficiently automate the analysis and manipulation of several, heterogeneous types of data. One of the most prominent examples of such software diffusion is represented by the widespread adoption of mobile applications. Indeed, during the recent years, the Global App Economy experienced unprecedented growth, driven by the increasing usage of apps and by the greater adoption of mobile devices (e.g., smartphone) around the globe. This mobile application market, which is expected in few …
Formal Modeling And Analysis Of A Family Of Surgical Robots, Niloofar Mansoor
Formal Modeling And Analysis Of A Family Of Surgical Robots, Niloofar Mansoor
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Safety-critical applications often use dependability cases to validate that specified properties are invariant, or to demonstrate a counterexample showing how that property might be violated. However, most dependability cases are written with a single product in mind. At the same time, software product lines (families of related software products) have been studied with the goal of modeling variability and commonality and building family-based techniques for both modeling and analysis. This thesis presents a novel approach for building an end to end dependability case for a software product line, where a property is formally modeled, a counterexample is found and then …

Deepfuzzer: Accelerated Deep Greybox Fuzzing, Jie Liang, Yu Jiang, Mingzhe Wang, Houbing Song, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo
Publications
Fuzzing is one of the most effective vulnerability detection techniques, widely used in practice. However, the performance of fuzzers may be limited by their inability to pass complicated checks, inappropriate mutation frequency, arbitrary mutation strategy, or the variability of the environment. In this paper, we present DeepFuzzer, an enhanced greybox fuzzer with qualified seed generation, balanced seed selection, and hybrid seed mutation. First, we use symbolic execution in a lightweight approach to generate qualified initial seeds which then guide the fuzzer through complex checks. Second, we apply a statistical seed selection algorithm to balance the mutation frequency between different seeds. …

Influence, Information And Team Outcomes In Large Scale Software Development, Subhajit Datta
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
It is widely perceived that the egalitarian ecosystems of large scale open source software development foster effective team outcomes. In this study, we question this conventional wisdom by examining whether and how the centralization of information and influence in a software development team relate to the quality of the team's work products. Analyzing data from more than a hundred real world projects that include development activities over close to a decade, involving 2000+ developers, who collectively resolve more than two hundred thousand defects through discussions covering more than six hundred thousand comments, we arrive at statistically significant evidence indicating that …

Finding Needles In A Haystack: Leveraging Co-Change Dependencies To Recommend Refactorings, Marcos César De Oliveira, Davi Freitas, Rodrigo Bonifacio, Gustavo Pinto, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A fine-grained co-change dependency arises when two fine-grained source-code entities, e.g., a method, change frequently together. This kind of dependency is relevant when considering remodularization efforts (e.g., to keep methods that change together in the same class). However, existing approaches forrecommending refactorings that change software decomposition (such as a move method) do not explorethe use of fine-grained co-change dependencies. In this paper we present a novel approach for recommending move method and move field refactorings, which removes co-change dependencies and evolutionary smells, a particular type of dependency that arise when fine-grained entities that belong to different classes frequently change together. First …

Program comprehension is a fundamental task in software development and maintenance processes. Software developers often need to understand a large amount of existing code before they can develop new features or fix bugs in existing programs. Being able to process programming language code automatically and provide summaries of code functionality accurately can significantly help developers to reduce time spent in code navigation and understanding, and thus increase productivity. Different from natural language articles, source code in programming languages often follows rigid syntactical structures and there can exist dependencies among code elements that are located far away from each other through …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Models that predict software artifact co-changes have been proposed to assist developers in altering a software system and they often rely on coupling. However, developers have not yet widely adopted these approaches, presumably because of the high number of false recommendations. In this work, we conjecture that the contextual information related to software changes, which is collected from issues (e.g., issue type and reporter), developers’ communication (e.g., number of issue comments, issue discussants and words in the discussion), and commit metadata (e.g., number of lines added, removed, and modified), improves the accuracy of co-change prediction. We built customized prediction models …
Leveraging Defects Life-Cycle For Labeling Defective Classes, Bailey R. Vandehei
Leveraging Defects Life-Cycle For Labeling Defective Classes, Bailey R. Vandehei
Master's Theses
Data from software repositories are a very useful asset to building dierent kinds of
models and recommender systems aimed to support software developers. Specically,
the identication of likely defect-prone les (i.e., classes in Object-Oriented systems)
helps in prioritizing, testing, and analysis activities. This work focuses on automated
methods for labeling a class in a version as defective or not. The most used methods
for automated class labeling belong to the SZZ family and fail in various circum-
stances. Thus, recent studies suggest the use of aect version (AV) as provided by
developers and available in the issue tracker such as …

Open source software (OSS) has conquered the software world. You can see it nearly everywhere, from Internet infrastructure to mobile phones to the desktop. In addition to that, although many OSS practices were viewed with skepticism 20 years ago, several have become mainstream in software engineering today: from development tools such as Git to practices such as modern code reviews.
Automating Change-Level Self-Admitted Technical Debt Determination, Meng Yan, Xin Xia, Emad Shihab, David Lo, Jianwei Yin, Xiaohu Yang
Automating Change-Level Self-Admitted Technical Debt Determination, Meng Yan, Xin Xia, Emad Shihab, David Lo, Jianwei Yin, Xiaohu Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Self-Admitted Technical Debt (SATD) refers to technical debt that is introduced intentionally. Previous studies that identify SATD at the file-level in isolation cannot describe the TD context related to multiple files. Therefore, it is more beneficial to identify the SATD once a change is being made. We refer to this type of TD identification as “Change-level SATD Determination”, and identifying SATD at the change-level can help to manage and control TD by understanding the TD context through tracing the introducing changes. In this paper, we propose a change-level SATD Determination mode by extracting 25 features from software changes that are …
Compositional Verification Of Heap-Manipulating Programs Through Property-Guided Learning, Long H. Pham, Jun Sun, Quang Loc Le
Compositional Verification Of Heap-Manipulating Programs Through Property-Guided Learning, Long H. Pham, Jun Sun, Quang Loc Le
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Analyzing and verifying heap-manipulating programs automatically is challenging. A key for fighting the complexity is to develop compositional methods. For instance, many existing verifiers for heap-manipulating programs require user-provided specification for each function in the program in order to decompose the verification problem. The requirement, however, often hinders the users from applying such tools. To overcome the issue, we propose to automatically learn heap-related program invariants in a property-guided way for each function call. The invariants are learned based on the memory graphs observed during test execution and improved through memory graph mutation. We implemented a prototype of our approach …
