The existing concurrency model for Java (or C) requires programmers to design and implement thread-safe classes by explicitly acquiring locks and releasing locks. Such a model is error-prone and is the reason for many concurrency bugs. While there are alternative models like transactional memory, manually writing locks remains prevalent in practice. In this work, we propose AutoLock, which aims to solve the problem by fully automatically generating thread-safe classes. Given a class which is assumed to be correct with sequential clients, AutoLock automatically generates a thread-safe class which is linearizable, and does it in a way without requiring a specification …

Neural networks are becoming a popular tool for solving many realworld problems such as object recognition and machine translation, thanks to its exceptional performance as an end-to-end solution. However, neural networks are complex black-box models, which hinders humans from interpreting and consequently trusting them in making critical decisions. Towards interpreting neural networks, several approaches have been proposed to extract simple deterministic models from neural networks. The results are not encouraging (e.g., low accuracy and limited scalability), fundamentally due to the limited expressiveness of such simple models. In this work, we propose an approach to extract probabilistic automata for interpreting an important …

This paper tackles the problem of detecting a comprehensive set of sensor faults that can occur in IoT-instrumented smart homes customized to infer Activities of Daily Living (ADL) from the activation of sensor sets. Specifically, sensors can suffer faults that (a) span durations that vary between several seconds to hours, (b) can result in both missing or false-alarm sensor-events. Previous fault detection approaches are geared primarily to identify missing faults (absence of sensor readings) of a permanent (very long-lived) nature, or sporadic false-alarm events. We propose DetectIF, a fault-detection framework that detects faults of varying time duration, and identifies both …

Currently, Android malware detection is mostly performed on server side against the increasing number of malware. Powerful computing resource provides more exhaustive protection for app markets than maintaining detection by a single user. However, apart from the applications (apps) provided by the official market (i.e., Google Play Store), apps from unofficial markets and third-party resources are always causing serious security threats to end-users. Meanwhile, it is a time-consuming task if the app is downloaded first and then uploaded to the server side for detection, because the network transmission has a lot of overhead. In addition, the uploading process also suffers …

Human-Like Summaries From Heterogeneous And Time-Windowed Software Development Artefacts, Mahfouth Alghamdi, Christoph Treude, Markus Wagner
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Automatic text summarisation has drawn considerable interest in the area of software engineering. It is challenging to summarise the activities related to a software project, (1) because of the volume and heterogeneity of involved software artefacts, and (2) because it is unclear what information a developer seeks in such a multi-document summary. We present the first framework for summarising multi-document software artefacts containing heterogeneous data within a given time frame. To produce human-like summaries, we employ a range of iterative heuristics to minimise the cosine-similarity between texts and high-dimensional feature vectors. A first study shows that users find the automatically …

Machine Learning (ML), including Deep Learning (DL), systems, i.e., those with ML capabilities, are pervasive in today's data-driven society. Such systems are complex; they are comprised of ML models and many subsystems that support learning processes. As with other complex systems, ML systems are prone to classic technical debt issues, especially when such systems are long-lived, but they also exhibit debt specific to these systems. Unfortunately, there is a gap of knowledge in how ML systems actually evolve and are maintained. In this paper, we fill this gap by studying refactorings, i.e., source-to-source semantics-preserving program transformations, performed in real-world, open-source …
Exploring The Efficacy Of Transfer Learning In Mining Image‑Based Software Artifacts, Natalie Best, Jordan Ott, Erik J. Linstead
Exploring The Efficacy Of Transfer Learning In Mining Image‑Based Software Artifacts, Natalie Best, Jordan Ott, Erik J. Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Transfer learning allows us to train deep architectures requiring a large number of learned parameters, even if the amount of available data is limited, by leveraging existing models previously trained for another task. In previous attempts to classify image-based software artifacts in the absence of big data, it was noted that standard off-the-shelf deep architectures such as VGG could not be utilized due to their large parameter space and therefore had to be replaced by customized architectures with fewer layers. This proves to be challenging to empirical software engineers who would like to make use of existing architectures without …
A 3d Image-Guided System To Improve Myocardial Revascularization Decision-Making For Patients With Coronary Artery Disease, Haipeng Tang
A 3d Image-Guided System To Improve Myocardial Revascularization Decision-Making For Patients With Coronary Artery Disease, Haipeng Tang
Dissertations
OBJECTIVES. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease and kills over 360,000 people a year in the United States. Myocardial revascularization (MR) is a standard interventional treatment for patients with stable CAD. Fluoroscopy angiography is real-time anatomical imaging and routinely used to guide MR by visually estimating the percent stenosis of coronary arteries. However, a lot of patients do not benefit from the anatomical information-guided MR without functional testing. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is a widely used functional testing for CAD evaluation but limits to the absence of anatomical information. …

Statistical And Deep Learning Models For Software Engineering Corpora, Van Duc Thong Hoang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation focuses on proposing statistical and deep learning models for software engineering corpora to detect bugs in software system. The dissertation aims to solve three main software engineering problems, i.e., bug localization (locating the potential buggy source files in a software project given a bug report or failing test cases), just-in-time defect prediction (identifying the potential defective commits as they are introduced into a version control system), and bug fixing patch identification (identifying commits repairing bugs for their propagation to parallelly maintained versions) to save developers’ time and e↵ort in improving software system quality. Moreover, I also propose a …

Novel Deep Learning Methods Combined With Static Analysis For Source Code Processing, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
It is desirable to combine machine learning and program analysis so that one can leverage the best of both to increase the performance of software analytics. On one side, machine learning can analyze the source code of thousands of well-written software projects that can uncover patterns that partially characterize software that is reliable, easy to read, and easy to maintain. On the other side, the program analysis can be used to define rigorous and unique rules that are only available in programming languages, which enrich the representation of source code and help the machine learning to capture the patterns better. …

Investigating Single Precision Floating General Matrix Multiply In Heterogeneous Hardware, Steven Harris
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The fundamental operation of matrix multiplication is ubiquitous across a myriad of disciplines. Yet, the identification of new optimizations for matrix multiplication remains relevant for emerging hardware architectures and heterogeneous systems. Frameworks such as OpenCL enable computation orchestration on existing systems, and its availability using the Intel High Level Synthesis compiler allows users to architect new designs for reconfigurable hardware using C/C++. Using the HARPv2 as a vehicle for exploration, we investigate the utility of several of the most notable matrix multiplication optimizations to better understand the performance portability of OpenCL and the implications for such optimizations on this and …

In this paper we characterize the contributions made by employees (developers that work for GitHub, the company) and volunteers (developers that use GitHub, the platform) to OSS projects maintained by GitHub (the company) on GitHub (the platform). By mining activities performed in five well-known company-owned OSS projects, we investigate what they do and when they do it. We found that the majority of the volunteers' contributions are related to reengineering (e.g., refactoring), while employees focus more on management (e.g., documentation). When it comes to the working hours, we found that contributions are made mostly from 9am-5pm, even for the volunteers.

Adversarial attacks of deep neural networks have been intensively studied on image, audio, and natural language classification tasks. Nevertheless, as a typical while important real-world application, the adversarial attacks of online video tracking that traces an object’s moving trajectory instead of its category are rarely explored. In this paper, we identify a new task for the adversarial attack to visual tracking: online generating imperceptible perturbations that mislead trackers along with an incorrect (Untargeted Attack, UA) or specified trajectory (Targeted Attack, TA). To this end, we first propose a spatial-aware basic attack by adapting existing attack methods, i.e., FGSM, BIM, and …

Commanding And Re-Dictation: Developing Eyes-Free Voice-Based Interaction For Editing Dictated Text, Debjyoti Ghosh, Can Liu, Shengdong Zhao, Kotaro Hara
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing voice-based interfaces have limited support for text editing, especially when seeing the text is difficult, e.g., while walking or cooking. This research develops voice interaction techniques for eyes-free text editing. First, with a Wizard-of-Oz study, we identified two primary user strategies: using commands, e.g., “replace go with goes” and re-dictating over an erroneous portion, e.g., correcting “he go there” by saying “he goes there.” To support these user strategies with an actual system implementation, we developed two eyes-free voice interaction techniques, Commanding and Re-dictation, and evaluated them with a controlled experiment. Results showed that while Re-dictation performs significantly better …

Bug reports play an important role in the process of debugging and fixing bugs. To reduce the burden of bug report managers and facilitate the process of bug fixing, a great amount of software engineering research has been invested into automated bug report management techniques. However, the verdict is still open whether such techniques are actually required and applicable outside of the theoretical research domain. To fill this gap, in this paper, we conducted a survey among 327 practitioners to gain their insights into various categories of automated bug report management techniques. Specifically, in the survey, we asked them to …

Rethinking Pruning For Accelerating Deep Inference At The Edge, Dawei Gao, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Yongxin Tong, Ke Xu, Lothar Thiele
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There is a growing trend to deploy deep neural networks at the edge for high-accuracy, real-time data mining and user interaction. Applications such as speech recognition and language understanding often apply a deep neural network to encode an input sequence and then use a decoder to generate the output sequence. A promising technique to accelerate these applications on resource-constrained devices is network pruning, which compresses the size of the deep neural network without severe drop in inference accuracy. However, we observe that although existing network pruning algorithms prove effective to speed up the prior deep neural network, they lead to …

Prevalence, Contents And Automatic Detection Of Kl-Satd, Leevi Rantala, Mika Mantyla, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
When developers use different keywords such as TODO and FIXME in source code comments to describe self-admitted technical debt (SATD), we refer it as Keyword-Labeled SATD (KL-SATD). We study KL-SATD from 33 software repositories with 13,588 KL-SATD comments. We find that the median percentage of KL-SATD comments among all comments is only 1,52%. We find that KL-SATD comment contents include words expressing code changes and uncertainty, such as remove, fix, maybe and probably. This makes them different compared to other comments. KL-SATD comment contents are similar to manually labeled SATD comments of prior work. Our machine learning classifier using logistic …

Lulling Waters: A Poetry Reading For Real-Time Music Generation Through Emotion Mapping, Ashley Muniz, Toshihisa Tsuruoka
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
Through a poetic narrative, “Lulling Waters” tells the story of a whale overcoming the loss of his mother, who passed away from ingesting plastic, as he attempts to escape from the polluted oceanic world. The live performance of this poem utilizes a software system called Soundwriter, which was developed with the goal of enriching the oral storytelling experience through music. This video demonstrates how Soundwriter’s real-time hybrid system was able to analyze “Lulling Waters” through its lexical and auditory features. Emotionally salient words were given ratings based on arousal, valence, and dominance while the emotionally charged prosodic features of the …

Deep learning (DL) has been successfully applied to many cutting-edge applications, e.g., image processing, speech recognition, and natural language processing. As more and more DL software is made open-sourced, publicly available, and organized in model repositories and stores (Model Zoo, ModelDepot), there comes a need to understand the relationships of these DL models regarding their maintenance and evolution tasks. Although clone analysis has been extensively studied for traditional software, up to the present, clone analysis has not been investigated for DL software. Since DL software adopts the data-driven development paradigm, it is still not clear whether and to what extent …

The Critical Success Factors Of Cloud Based Application Implementation In Construction Management, Sukiman Mohd Asfahani
Student Works (2020-2029)
Design and construction are information intensive activities, involving a great number of people collaborating to produce complex, one-off developments. Whilst historically, information may have been managed and communicated using paper-based systems and verbal instructions, the integration of the supply chain, the introduction of computer aided design (CAD) and building information modelling (BIM) and the development of cloud computing application means that information communications technology (ICT) is becoming a fundamental part, not just of the design office, but also of the construction site. Cloud computing is a relatively new phenomenon in the construction industry. It allows the delivery over the 'cloud' …

Software developers often reuse code from online sources such as Stack Overflow within their projects. However, the process of searching for code snippets and integrating them within existing source code can be tedious. In order to improve efficiency and reduce time spent on code reuse, we present an automated code reuse tool for the Eclipse IDE (Integrated Developer Environment), NLP2TestableCode. NLP2TestableCode can not only search for Java code snippets using natural language tasks, but also evaluate code snippets based on a user’s existing code, modify snippets to improve fit and correct errors, before presenting the user with the best snippet, …

In a large software system such as the Linux kernel, there is a continual need for large-scale changes across many source files, triggered by new needs or refined design decisions. In this paper, we propose to ease such changes by suggesting transformation rules to developers, inferred automatically from a collection of examples. Our approach can help automate large-scale changes as well as help understand existing large-scale changes, by highlighting the various cases that the developer who performed the changes has taken into account. We have implemented our approach as a tool, Spinfer. We evaluate Spinfer on a range of challenging …

Active Fuzzing For Testing And Securing Cyber-Physical Systems, Yuqi Chen, Bohan Xuan, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun, Fan Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) in critical infrastructure face a pervasive threat from attackers, motivating research into a variety of countermeasures for securing them. Assessing the effectiveness of these countermeasures is challenging, however, as realistic benchmarks of attacks are difficult to manually construct, blindly testing is ineffective due to the enormous search spaces and resource requirements, and intelligent fuzzing approaches require impractical amounts of data and network access. In this work, we propose active fuzzing, an automatic approach for finding test suites of packet-level CPS network attacks, targeting scenarios in which attackers can observe sensors and manipulate packets, but have no existing …

A Process Model For Designing Performance Dashboard Using Visualization Techniques, Bahar Muhammad Nasim
Student Works (2020-2029)
Data visualization is the presentation of data in a pictorial or graphical format. It enables decision-makers to see data analysis presented visually, so they can observe difficult concepts or identify new patterns. With interactive visualization, we can take the concept a step further by using technology to drill down into charts and graphs for more detail, interactively changing what data see and how it is processed. With the help of data visualization, it is expected to promote creative data exploration. A performance dashboard is one of the most common use cases for data visualization, and it enables decision-makers such as …

Due to the deprecation of APIs in the Android operating system, developers have to update usages of the APIs to ensure that their applications work for both the past and current versions of Android. Such updates may be widespread, non-trivial, and time-consuming. Therefore, automation of such updates will be of great benefit to developers. AppEvolve, which is the state-of-the-art tool for automating such updates, relies on having before- and after-update examples to learn from. In this work, we propose an approach named CocciEvolve that performs such updates using only a single after-update example. CocciEvolve learns edits by extracting the relevant …

Enhancing The Performance Of Ir-Based Traceability Recovery Of Requirement Artifacts Using Noun Phrases, Dafaalla Abdelrahman Mashahi Khalafalla
Student Works (2020-2029)
Requirement traceability can be considered as a measure of software quality to help achieve validation, verification, and reusability. Neglecting traceability leads to less maintainable software. Creating traceability links after-the-fact, known as traceability recovery, is a tedious and time-consuming process when it is done manually. Therefore, information retrieval (IR) methods have been used to automatically identify traceability links between the artifacts. However, as a result of limitations of the software engineer and the IR techniques, the performance of the IR methods is negatively affected. There is no IR method that is able to recover traceability links between artifacts with high precision …

Service composition aims at achieving a business goal by composing existing service-based applications or components. The response time of a service is crucial, especially in time-critical business environments, which is often stated as a clause in service-level agreements between service providers and service users. To meet the guaranteed response time requirement of a composite service, it is important to select a feasible set of component services such that their response time will collectively satisfy the response time requirement of the composite service. In this work, we use the BPEL modeling language that aims at specifying Web services. We extend it …
