Revman: Revenue-Aware Multi-Task Online Insurance Recommendation, Yu Li, Yi Zhang, Lu Gan, Gengwei Hong, Zimu Zhou, Qiang Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online insurance is a new type of e-commerce with exponential growth. An effective recommendation model that maximizes the total revenue of insurance products listed in multiple customized sales scenarios is crucial for the success of online insurance business. Prior recommendation models are ineffective because they fail to characterize the complex relatedness of insurance products in multiple sales scenarios and maximize the overall conversion rate rather than the total revenue. Even worse, it is impractical to collect training data online for total revenue maximization due to the business logic of online insurance. We propose RevMan, a Revenue-aware Multi-task Network for online …

Decision-Guided Weighted Automata Extraction From Recurrent Neural Networks, Xiyue Zhang, Xiaoning Du, Xiaofei Xie, Lei Ma, Yang Liu, Meng Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have demonstrated their effectiveness in learning and processing sequential data (e.g., speech and natural language). However, due to the black-box nature of neural networks, understanding the decision logic of RNNs is quite challenging. Some recent progress has been made to approximate the behavior of an RNN by weighted automata. They provide better interpretability, but still suffer from poor scalability. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to extracting weighted automata with the guidance of a target RNN’s decision and context information. In particular, we identify the patterns of RNN’s step-wise predictive decisions to instruct the …

An Exploratory Study On The Introduction And Removal Of Different Types Of Technical Debt In Deep Learning Frameworks, Jiakun Liu, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, Emad Shihab, David Lo, Shanping Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To complete tasks faster, developers often have to sacrifice the quality of the software. Such compromised practice results in the increasing burden to developers in future development. The metaphor, technical debt, describes such practice. Prior research has illustrated the negative impact of technical debt, and many researchers investigated how developers deal with a certain type of technical debt. However, few studies focused on the removal of different types of technical debt in practice. To fill this gap, we use the introduction and removal of different types of self-admitted technical debt (i.e., SATD) in 7 deep learning frameworks as an example. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid development of online education in recent years, there has been an increasing number of learning platforms that provide students with multi-step questions to cultivate their problem-solving skills. To guarantee the high quality of such learning materials, question designers need to inspect how students’ problem-solving processes unfold step by step to infer whether students’ problem-solving logic matches their design intent. They also need to compare the behaviors of different groups (e.g., students from different grades) to distribute questions to students with the right level of knowledge. The availability of fine-grained interaction data, such as mouse movement trajectories from …

Change Request Prediction And Effort Estimation In An Evolving Software System, Lamees Abdullah Alhazzaa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prediction of software defects has been the focus of many researchers in empirical software engineering and software maintenance because of its significance in providing quality estimates from the project management perspective for an evolving legacy system. Software Reliability Growth Models (SRGM) have been used to predict future defects in a software release. Modern software engineering databases contain Change Requests (CR), which include both defects and other maintenance requests. Our goal is to use defect prediction methods to help predict CRs in an evolving legacy system.
Limited research has been done in defect prediction using curve-fitting methods evolving software systems, with …

With the rapid development of the internet technology, a large amount of internet text data can be obtained. The text classification (TC) technology plays a very important role in processing massive text data, but the accuracy of classification is directly affected by the performance of term weighting in TC. Due to the original design of information retrieval (IR), term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) is not effective enough for TC, especially for processing text data with unbalanced distributions in internet media reports. Therefore, the variance between the DF value of a particular term and the average of all DFs , namely, …

Tagtools: Software Supporting Biologging Research, Sam Fynewever, Racheal Tejevbo, Stacy L. De Ruiter
Summer Research
Observing animals in obscure habitats has long posed a challenge in biology. Biologging addresses this broad problem, obtaining data about animals like their acceleration, GPS position, etc. using electronic tags. Data from tags can lead to important knowledge of animal behavior, as DeRuiter et al. (2013) have shown1 . However, data is often shared raw, causing inconsistencies. This project maintains TagTools, software addressing this specific problem. TagToolsfunctions (in Matlab, Octave & R) calibrate data and help analyze behavior. TagTools software is traditionally taught at in-person workshops. Our old documents (practicals) were hosted online, but had bugs & were very long, …

The Role Of Software Engineering In Bioinformatics, Brendan Sean Lawlor
Theses
This thesis proposes that by applying state-of-the-art software engineering tools, techniques and frameworks to currently recognised challenges in bioinformatics, improved outcomes can be attained in that field. It begins by decomposing software engineering into two categories, namely process and architecture, and choosing two key challenges in the practice of bioinformatics: reproducibility and scalability. The body of the thesis is an exploration of the intersection between these two software engineering categories and these two bioinformatics challenges. The question is asked: Can best practices in professional software engineering be applied to address key issues in the bioinformatics domain, creating positive outcomes? And …

Soda: An Open-Source Library For Visualizing Biological Sequence Annotation, Jack W. Roddy, Travis J. Wheeler
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Genome annotation is the process of identifying and labeling known genetic sequences or features within a genome. Across the various subfields within modern molecular biology, there is a common need for the visualization of such annotations. Genomic data is often visualized on web browser platforms, providing users with easy access to visualization tools without the need for installing any software or, in many cases, underlying datasets. While there exists a broad range of web-based visualization tools, there is, to my knowledge, no lightweight, modern library tailored towards the visualization of genomic data. Instead, developers charged with the task of producing …
Integrating The Bullet Physics Engine Into Minecraft, Ethan Johnson
Integrating The Bullet Physics Engine Into Minecraft, Ethan Johnson
Student Academic Conference
During the past fall semester, I started a programming project called Rayon which is designed to be a realistic physics engine implementation that runs alongside the videogame Minecraft. It is a library which Minecraft mod developers can use to implement realistic entity movement into their own mods. Rayon, being entirely written in the Java programming language, currently uses a port of the Bullet physics engine called JBullet which is very outdated and no longer being maintained. To find a more performant solution, I have set out to replace JBullet with an alternative library called LibBulletJME which is designed to interface …

Analyzing The Blockchain Attack Surface: A Top-Down Approach, Muhammad Saad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Blockchains enable secure asset exchange in a distributed system, thereby facilitating innovative applications such as cryptocurrencies and smart contracts. Although the cryptographic constructs of blockchains are highly secure, however, their practical deployments are vulnerable to various attacks due to their application-specific policies, and their peer-to-peer (P2P) network intricacies. In this work, we take a top-down approach towards exploring those attacks, starting with the application-specific abuse of blockchain-based cryptocurrencies and concluding with the network conditions that violate the blockchain consistency. In the top-down approach, we first analyze the application-specific abuse of blockchain-based cryptocurrencies by uncovering (1) covert cryptocurrency mining in the …

Analysis And Classification Of Software Fault-Proneness And Vulnerabilities, Mohammad Jamil Ahmad
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Software bugs are expensive to fix and can lead to catastrophic consequences. Therefore, their analysis and the use of machine learning for prediction are of the utmost importance. Many prediction models have been proposed and different factors affecting the prediction performance have been extensively studied. This work addresses four topics in two areas in software engineering: software fault-proneness prediction and analysis and classification of security-related bug reports. The first topic focuses on the effect of the learning approach (i.e., the way software fault-proneness prediction models are trained and tested) on the performance of software fault-proneness prediction which lacks extensive research …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed a substantial shortcoming in the modern American educational system: there is a sufficient need for our educators to be trained in the practices required to provide an educational experience for their students that is as effective as in-person instruction. There exist already systems of online instruction for various academic subjects, such as math and the sciences. In the subject of linguistic studies, educational programs have been developed to evaluate student proficiency in both the written and spoken forms of the language in which they are studying. However, there exist few programs that can effectively provide …

Online Marketplace, Devin Hopkins
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The goal of this project was to create a website that helped a common person search for items from online marketplaces, such as eBay, Amazon, or Facebook Marketplace. The intention was to ease the burden of needing to search several different websites for the same product. Currently, if a person wants to look for a specific item on multiple different marketplaces, they must go to each marketplace individually and search for it. They must enter their specifications repeatedly and load virtually the same web page multiple times. This project’s goal was to condense that so the user would only have …
Source Code Comment Classification Artificial Intelligence, Cole Sutyak
Source Code Comment Classification Artificial Intelligence, Cole Sutyak
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Source code comment classification is an important problem for future machine learning solutions. In particular, supervised machine learning solutions that have largely subjective data labels but are difficult to obtain the labels for. Machine learning problems are problems largely because of a lack of data. In machine learning solutions, it is better to have a large amount of mediocre data than it is to have a small amount of good data. While the mediocre data might not produce the best accuracy, it produces the best results because there is much more to learn from the problem.
In this project, data …
Adversarial Specification Mining, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo
Adversarial Specification Mining, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There have been numerous studies on mining temporal specifications from execution traces. These approaches learn finite-state automata (FSA) from execution traces when running tests. To learn accurate specifications of a software system, many tests are required. Existing approaches generalize from a limited number of traces or use simple test generation strategies. Unfortunately, these strategies may not exercise uncommon usage patterns of a software system. To address this problem, we propose a new approach, adversarial specification mining, and develop a prototype, DICE (Diversity through Counter-Examples). DICE has two components: DICE-Tester and DICE-Miner. After mining Linear Temporal Logic specifications from an input …

This paper presents an ensemble part-of-speech tagging approach for source code identifiers. Ensemble tagging is a technique that uses machine-learning and the output from multiple part-of-speech taggers to annotate natural language text at a higher quality than the part-of-speech taggers are able to obtain independently. Our ensemble uses three state-of-the-art part-of-speech taggers: SWUM, POSSE, and Stanford. We study the quality of the ensemble's annotations on five different types of identifier names: function, class, attribute, parameter, and declaration statement at the level of both individual words and full identifier names. We also study and discuss the weaknesses of our tagger to …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In recent years, generative adversarial networks (GANs) and its variants have achieved unprecedented success in image synthesis. They are widely adopted in synthesizing facial images which brings potential security concerns to humans as the fakes spread and fuel the misinformation. However, robust detectors of these AI-synthesized fake faces are still in their infancy and are not ready to fully tackle this emerging challenge. In this work, we propose a novel approach, named FakeSpotter, based on monitoring neuron behaviors to spot AIsynthesized fake faces. The studies on neuron coverage and interactions have successfully shown that they can be served as testing …

Visual privacy concerns associated with image sharing is a critical issue that need to be addressed to enable safe and lawful use of online social platforms. Users of social media platforms often suffer from no guidance in sharing sensitive images in public, and often face with social and legal consequences. Given the recent success of visual attention based deep learning methods in measuring abstract phenomena like image memorability, we are motivated to investigate whether visual attention based methods could be useful in measuring psychophysical phenomena like “privacy sensitivity”. In this paper we propose PrivAttNet – a visual attention based approach, …

Can We Trust Your Explanations? Sanity Checks For Interpreters In Android Malware Analysis, Min Fan, Wenying Wei, Xiaofei Xie, Yang Liu, Xiaohong Guan, Ting Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid growth of Android malware, many machine learning-based malware analysis approaches are proposed to mitigate the severe phenomenon. However, such classifiers are opaque, non-intuitive, and difficult for analysts to understand the inner decision reason. For this reason, a variety of explanation approaches are proposed to interpret predictions by providing important features. Unfortunately, the explanation results obtained in the malware analysis domain cannot achieve a consensus in general, which makes the analysts confused about whether they can trust such results. In this work, we propose principled guidelines to assess the quality of five explanation approaches by designing three critical …

Why My Code Summarization Model Does Not Work: Code Comment Improvement With Category Prediction, Qiuyuan Chen, Xin Xia, Han Hu, David Lo, Shanping Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Code summarization aims at generating a code comment given a block of source code and it is normally performed by training machine learning algorithms on existing code block-comment pairs. Code comments in practice have different intentions. For example, some code comments might explain how the methods work, while others explain why some methods are written. Previous works have shown that a relationship exists between a code block and the category of a comment associated with it. In this article, we aim to investigate to which extent we can exploit this relationship to improve code summarization performance. We first classify comments …

The Air Force software development environment is experiencing a paradigm shift. The 2019 Defense Innovation Board concluded that speed and cycle time must become the most important software metrics if the US military is to maintain its advantage over adversaries.1 This article proposes utilizing a cost-of-delay (CoD) framework to prioritize projects toward optimizing readiness. Cost-of-delay is defined as the economic impact resulting from a delaying product delivery or, said another way, opportunity cost. In principle, CoD assesses the negative impacts resulting from changes to the priority of a project.
Single And Differential Morph Attack Detection, Baaria Chaudhary
Single And Differential Morph Attack Detection, Baaria Chaudhary
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Face recognition systems operate on the assumption that a person's face serves as the unique link to their identity. In this thesis, we explore the problem of morph attacks, which have become a viable threat to face verification scenarios precisely because of their inherent ability to break this unique link. A morph attack occurs when two people who share similar facial features morph their faces together such that the resulting face image is recognized as either of two contributing individuals. Morphs inherit enough visual features from both individuals that both humans and automatic algorithms confuse them. The contributions of this …
Distributed Load Testing By Modeling And Simulating User Behavior, Chester Ira Parrott
Distributed Load Testing By Modeling And Simulating User Behavior, Chester Ira Parrott
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Modern human-machine systems such as microservices rely upon agile engineering practices which require changes to be tested and released more frequently than classically engineered systems. A critical step in the testing of such systems is the generation of realistic workloads or load testing. Generated workload emulates the expected behaviors of users and machines within a system under test in order to find potentially unknown failure states. Typical testing tools rely on static testing artifacts to generate realistic workload conditions. Such artifacts can be cumbersome and costly to maintain; however, even model-based alternatives can prevent adaptation to changes in a system …
An Integrated Three-Flow Approach For Front-End Service Composition, Lim Mei Ting
An Integrated Three-Flow Approach For Front-End Service Composition, Lim Mei Ting
Student Works (2020-2029)
End-User Service Composition (EUSC) aims to enable end-user programmers who are not professional developers, develop applications by composing or aggregating existing web services. Despite the effort, studies have shown that end-user programmers are not able to deal with the technical complexities involved in EUSC. One way to deal with this issue is Front-End Service Composition (FESC), which allows end-user programmers to compose web services at the presentation layer of an application by configuring User Interface (UI) widgets that represent the back-end web services. However, apart from there not being enough studies on FESC, end-user programmers also experience a number of …
