Relationalnet Using Graph Neural Networks For Social Recommendations, Dharahas Tallapally Jan 2023

Relationalnet Using Graph Neural Networks For Social Recommendations, Dharahas Tallapally

Master's Projects

Traditional recommender systems create models that can predict user interests based on the user-item relationships. However, these systems often have limited performance due to sparse user behavior data. To address this challenge, researchers are now exploring models for social recommendation that can account for both user- user and user-item relationships based on social networks, and user past behavior, respectively. These models aim to understand each user’s behavior by considering their trusted neighbors and their influence on each other. Specifically, the potential embedding of each user is influenced by their trusted neighbors, who are, in turn, influenced by their own trusted …

Sensor Relationship Inference In Single Resident Smart Homes Using Time Series, Samuel Nack Jan 2023

Sensor Relationship Inference In Single Resident Smart Homes Using Time Series, Samuel Nack

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Determining sensor relationships in smart environments is complex due to the variety and volume of time series information they provide. Moreover, identifying sensor relationships to connect them with actuators is difficult for smart home users who may not have technical experience. Yet, gathering information on sensor relationships is a crucial intermediate step towards more advanced smart home applications such as advanced policy generation or automatic sensor configuration. Therefore, in this thesis, I propose a novel unsupervised learning approach, named SeReIn, to automatically group sensors by their inherent relationships solely using time series data for single resident smart homes. SeReIn extracts …

Murder On The Vr Express: Studying The Impact Of Thought Experiments At A Distance In Virtual Reality, Andrew Kissel, Krzysztof J. Rechowicz, John B. Shull

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Hypothetical thought experiments allow researchers to gain insights into widespread moral intuitions and provide opportunities for individuals to explore their moral commitments. Previous thought experiment studies in virtual reality (VR) required participants to come to an on-site laboratory, which possibly restricted the study population, introduced an observer effect, and made internal reflection on the participants’ part more difficult. These shortcomings are particularly crucial today, as results from such studies are increasingly impacting the development of artificial intelligence systems, self-driving cars, and other technologies. This paper explores the viability of deploying thought experiments in commercially available in-home VR headsets. We conducted …

Sequence Checking And Deduplication For Existing Fingerprint Databases, Tahsin Islam Sakif

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Biometric technology is a rapidly evolving field with applications that range from access to devices to border crossing and entry/exit processes. Large-scale applications to collect biometric data, such as border crossings result in multimodal biometric databases containing thousands of identities. However, due to human operator error, these databases often contain many instances of image labeling and classification; this is due to the lack of training and throughput pressure that comes with human error. Multiple entries from the same individual may be assigned to a different identity. Rolled fingerprints may be labeled as flat images, a face image entered into a …

Application Of Knowledge Graph Techniques On Textbooks, Yutong Yao Jan 2023

Application Of Knowledge Graph Techniques On Textbooks, Yutong Yao

Master's Projects

Textbooks are written and organized in a way that facilitates learning and understanding. Sections like glossary terms at the end of a textbook provide guidance on the topic of interest. However, it takes manual effort to create the index terms in the glossary that highlight the key referenced terminologies and related terms. Knowledge graphs, which have been used to represent and even reason over data and knowledge, can potentially capture textbook’s important terms, concepts, and their relations. Popular since the initial introduction by Google Knowledge Graphs (KGs), they combine graph and data to capture and model enormous amounts of relational …

Scene Representation And Matching For Visual Localization In Hybrid Camera Scenarios, Marcela A. Mera Trujillo Jan 2023

Scene Representation And Matching For Visual Localization In Hybrid Camera Scenarios, Marcela A. Mera Trujillo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Scene representation and matching are crucial steps in a variety of tasks ranging from 3D reconstruction to virtual/augmented/mixed reality applications, to robotics, and others. While approaches exist that tackle these tasks, they mostly overlook the issue of efficiency in the scene representation, which is fundamental in resource-constrained systems and for increasing computing speed. Also, they normally assume the use of projective cameras, while performance on systems based on other camera geometries remains suboptimal. This dissertation contributes with a new efficient scene representation method that dramatically reduces the number of 3D points. The approach sets up an optimization problem for the …

Lens: A Novel Image Processing-Based Approach For Low-Cost Segmentation Of Computed Tomography Scans Of Lungs, Monica Hinga

Computer Science ETDs

A staggering amount of data has been collected and analyzed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of that data, however, particularly computed tomography (CT) scans of lungs, are difficult to analyze computationally. Segmentation of COVID-19 lesions provides researchers with insights into where lesions form, their volume, and in the case of time course data, how lesions grow as disease progresses. Spatial information, which has received little attention in the literature, has the potential to provide valuable insight to within-host viral and immune dynamics. Unfortunately, state-of-the-art supervised deep learning methods require labeled data, which can be prohibitively expensive to …

Explainable Ai Helps Bridge The Ai Skills Gap: Evidence From A Large Bank, Selina Carter, Jonathan Hersh

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Advances in machine learning have created an “AI skills gap” both across and within firms. As AI becomes embedded in firm processes, it is unknown how this will impact the digital divide between workers with and without AI skills. In this paper we ask whether managers trust AI to predict consequential events, what manager characteristics are associated with increasing trust in AI predictions, and whether explainable AI (XAI) affects users’ trust in AI predictions. Partnering with a large bank, we generated AI predictions for whether a loan will be late in its final disbursement. We embedded these predictions into a …

Detecting Selfish Mining Attacks Against A Blockchain Using Machine Learing, Matthew A. Peterson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

Selfish mining is an attack against a blockchain where miners hide newly discovered blocks instead of publishing them to the rest of the network. Selfish mining has been a potential issue for blockchains since it was first discovered by Eyal and Sirer. It can be used by malicious miners to earn a disproportionate share of the mining rewards or in conjunction with other attacks to steal money from network users. Several of these attacks were launched in 2018, 2019, and 2020 with the attackers stealing as much as $18 Million. Developers made several different attempts to fix this issue, but …

Marginal Proportional Hazards Models For Clustered Interval-Censored Data With Time-Dependent Covariates, Kaitlyn Cook, Wenbin Lu, Rui Wang

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Botswana Combination Prevention Project was a cluster-randomized HIV prevention trial whose follow-up period coincided with Botswana’s national adoption of a universal test-and-treat strategy for HIV management. Of interest is whether, and to what extent, this change in policy (i) modified the observed preventative effects of the study intervention and (ii) was associated with a reduction in the population-level incidence of HIV in Botswana. To address these questions, we propose a stratified proportional hazards model for clustered intervalcensored data with time-dependent covariates and develop a composite expectation maximization algorithm that facilitates estimation of model parameters without placing parametric assumptions on …
