Algorithmic Factorization Of Polynomials Over Number Fields, Christian Schulz May 2017

Algorithmic Factorization Of Polynomials Over Number Fields, Christian Schulz

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

The problem of exact polynomial factorization, in other words expressing a polynomial as a product of irreducible polynomials over some field, has applications in algebraic number theory. Although some algorithms for factorization over algebraic number fields are known, few are taught such general algorithms, as their use is mainly as part of the code of various computer algebra systems. This thesis provides a summary of one such algorithm, which the author has also fully implemented at https://github.com/Whirligig231/number-field-factorization, along with an analysis of the runtime of this algorithm. Let k be the product of the degrees of the adjoined elements used …

Network Modeling Of Infectious Disease: Transmission, Control And Prevention, Christina M. Chandler May 2017

Network Modeling Of Infectious Disease: Transmission, Control And Prevention, Christina M. Chandler

Honors College Theses

Many factors come into play when it comes to the transmission of infectious diseases. In disease control and prevention, it is inevitable to consider the general population and the relationships between individuals as a whole, which calls for advanced mathematical modeling approaches.

We will use the concept of network flow and the modified Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to demonstrate the transmission of infectious diseases over a given period of time. Through our model one can observe what possible measures should be taken or improved upon in the case of an epidemic. We identify key nodes and edges in the resulted network, which …

Weighted Distributions: A Brief Review, Perspective And Characterizations, Aamir Saghir, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Sadaf Tazeem, Aneeqa Khadim

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The weighted distributions are widely used in many fields such as medicine, ecology and reliability, to name a few, for the development of proper statistical models. Weighted distributions are milestone for efficient modeling of statistical data and prediction when the standard distributions are not appropriate. A good deal of studies related to the weight distributions have been published in the literature. In this article, a brief review of these distributions is carried out. Implications of the differing weight models for future research as well as some possible strategies are discussed. Finally, characterizations of these distributions based on a simple relationship …

Eit Imaging Of Admittivities With A D-Bar Method And Spatial Prior: Experimental Results For Absolute And Difference Imaging, Sarah J. Hamilton May 2017

Eit Imaging Of Admittivities With A D-Bar Method And Spatial Prior: Experimental Results For Absolute And Difference Imaging, Sarah J. Hamilton

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an emerging imaging modality that uses harmless electrical measurements taken on electrodes at a body's surface to recover information about the internal electrical conductivity and or permittivity. The image reconstruction task of EIT is a highly nonlinear inverse problem that is sensitive to noise and modeling errors making the image reconstruction task challenging. D-bar methods solve the nonlinear problem directly, bypassing the need for detailed and time-intensive forward models, to provide absolute (static) as well as time-difference EIT images. Coupling the D-bar methodology with the inclusion of high confidence a priori data results in a …

Relation Algebras, Idempotent Semirings And Generalized Bunched Implication Algebras, Peter Jipsen Apr 2017

Relation Algebras, Idempotent Semirings And Generalized Bunched Implication Algebras, Peter Jipsen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

This paper investigates connections between algebraic structures that are common in theoretical computer science and algebraic logic. Idempotent semirings are the basis of Kleene algebras, relation algebras, residuated lattices and bunched implication algebras. Extending a result of Chajda and Länger, we show that involutive residuated lattices are determined by a pair of dually isomorphic idempotent semirings on the same set, and this result also applies to relation algebras. Generalized bunched implication algebras (GBI-algebras for short) are residuated lattices expanded with a Heyting implication. We construct bounded cyclic involutive GBI-algebras from so-called weakening relations, and prove that the class of weakening …

Deriving A Provisional Tolerable Intake For Intravenous Exposure To Silver Nanoparticles Released From Medical Devices, Laura C. Savery, Rene Vinas, Amber M. Nagy, Prachi Pradeep, Stephen Merrill, Subhas G. Malghan, Peter L. Goering, Ronald P. Brown

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are incorporated into medical devices for their anti-microbial characteristics. The potential exposure and toxicity of AgNPs is unknown due to varying physicochemical particle properties and lack of toxicological data. The aim of this safety assessment is to derive a provisional tolerable intake (pTI) value for AgNPs released from blood-contacting medical devices. A literature review of in vivo studies investigating critical health effects induced from intravenous (i. v.) exposure to AgNPs was evaluated by the Annapolis Accords principles and Toxicological Data Reliability Assessment Tool (ToxRTool). The point of departure (POD) was based on an i. v. 28-day …

Pythagorean Approximations For Lego: Merging Educational Robot Construction With Programming And Data Analysis, Ronald I. Greenberg Apr 2017

Pythagorean Approximations For Lego: Merging Educational Robot Construction With Programming And Data Analysis, Ronald I. Greenberg

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Abstract. This paper can be used in two ways. It can provide reference information for incorporating diagonal elements (for bracing or gear meshing) in educational robots built from standard LEGO kits. Alternatively, it can be used as the basis for an assignment for high school or college students to recreate this information; in the process, students will exercise skills in both computer programming and data analysis. Using the paper in the second way can be an excellent integrative experience to add to an existing course; for example, the Exploring Computer Science high school curriculum concludes with the units “Introduction to …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

The aims of this study were to assess 1) differences in perceptions of dental implant training between dental students who received didactic training alone (control group) and those who received didactic plus simulation training (test group); 2) differences in response between students with and without clinical experience in implant dentistry; and 3) the interaction effect of simulation training and clinical experience on students’ satisfaction. A survey was distributed to the control group in 2014 and to the test group in 2015; both groups were at the same U.S. dental school. Data were collected on confidence levels with various implant restorative …

Sexual Dimorphism In Digit Ratios Derived From Dorsal Digit Length Among Adults And Children, Sanjay Kumar, Martin Voracek, Maharaj Singh Mar 2017

Sexual Dimorphism In Digit Ratios Derived From Dorsal Digit Length Among Adults And Children, Sanjay Kumar, Martin Voracek, Maharaj Singh

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Sexual dimorphism in ventrally measured digit ratios (2D:4D and other) has been related to prenatal sex-hormone levels. In the present series of three studies, we measured all digit lengths (excluding the thumb) on the dorsal, rather than the ventral, side of left and right hands and investigated the sexual dimorphism in digit ratios in three independent samples, two of them comprising adults (Study I, N = 104; Study II, N = 154), and one further, comprising kindergarten children (Study III, N = 64). Results show that men have lower digit-ratio values compared to women in digit ratios that include digit …

Why Linear Interpolation?, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2017

Why Linear Interpolation?, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Linear interpolation is the computationally simplest of all possible interpolation techniques. Interestingly, it works reasonably well in many practical situations, even in situations when the corresponding computational models are rather complex. In this paper, we explain this empirical fact by showing that linear interpolation is the only interpolation procedure that satisfies several reasonable properties such as consistency and scale-invariance.

Derivation Of Gross-Pitaevskii Version Of Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation From Scale Invariance, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2017

Derivation Of Gross-Pitaevskii Version Of Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation From Scale Invariance, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is known that in the usual 3-D space, the Schroedinger equation can be derived from scale-invariance. In view of the fact that, according to modern physics, the actual dimension of proper space may be different from 3, it is desirable to analyze what happens in other spatial dimensions D. It turns out that while for D ≥ 3 we still get only the Schroedinger's equation, for D = 2, we also get the Gross-Pitaevskii version of a nonlinear Schroedinger equation that describes a quantum system of identical bosons, and for D = 1, we also get a new nonlinear …

Towards Decision Making Under General Uncertainty, Andrzej Pownuk, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2017

Towards Decision Making Under General Uncertainty, Andrzej Pownuk, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

There exist techniques for decision making under specific types of uncertainty, such as probabilistic, fuzzy, etc. Each of the corresponding ways of describing uncertainty has its advantages and limitations. As a result, new techniques for describing uncertainty appear all the time. Instead of trying to extend the existing decision making idea to each of these new techniques one by one, we attempt to develop a general approach that would cover all possible uncertainty techniques.

Why Stable Teams Are More Efficient In Education, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is known that study groups speed up learning. Recent studies have shown that stable study groups are more efficient than shifting-membership groups. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for this empirical observation.

Can We Detect Crisp Sets Based Only On The Subsethood Ordering Of Fuzzy Sets? Fuzzy Sets And/Or Crisp Sets Based On Subsethood Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets?, Christian Servin, Gerardo Muela, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2017

Can We Detect Crisp Sets Based Only On The Subsethood Ordering Of Fuzzy Sets? Fuzzy Sets And/Or Crisp Sets Based On Subsethood Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets?, Christian Servin, Gerardo Muela, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy sets are naturally ordered by the subsethood relation. If we only know which set which fuzzy set is a subset of which -- and have no access to the actual values of the corresponding membership functions -- can we detect which fuzzy sets are crisp? In this paper, we show that this is indeed possible. We also show that if we start with interval-valued fuzzy sets, then we can similarly detect type-1 fuzzy sets and crisp sets.

An Online Educational Program Improves Pediatric Oncology Nurses’ Knowledge, Attitudes, And Spiritual Care Competence, Cheryl L. Petersen, Margaret Callahan, Donna O. Mccarthy, Ronda G. Hughes, Rosemary White-Traut, Naveen K. Bansal

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

This study evaluated the potential impact of an online spiritual care educational program on pediatric nurses’ attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and their competence to provide spiritual care to children with cancer at the end of life. It was hypothesized that the intervention would increase nurses’ positive attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and increase nurses’ level of perceived spiritual care competence. A positive correlation was expected between change in nurses’ perceived attitudes toward and knowledge of spiritual care and change in nurses’ perceived spiritual care competence. A prospective, longitudinal design was employed, and analyses included one-way …

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) is a legume crop that is resilient to hot and drought‐prone climates, and a primary source of protein in sub‐Saharan Africa and other parts of the developing world. However, genome resources for cowpea have lagged behind most other major crops. Here we describe foundational genome resources and their application to the analysis of germplasm currently in use in West African breeding programs. Resources developed from the African cultivar IT97K‐499‐35 include a whole‐genome shotgun (WGS) assembly, a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) physical map, and assembled sequences from 4355 BACs. These resources and WGS sequences of …

Anonpri: A Secure Anonymous Private Authentication Protocol For Rfid Systems, Farzana Rahman, Md. Endadul Hoque, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Privacy preservation in RFID systems is a very important issue in modern day world. Privacy activists have been worried about the invasion of user privacy while using various RFID systems and services. Hence, significant efforts have been made to design RFID systems that preserve users' privacy. Majority of the privacy preserving protocols for RFID systems require the reader to search all tags in the system in order to identify a single RFID tag which not efficient for large scale systems. In order to achieve high-speed authentication in large-scale RFID systems, researchers propose tree-based approaches, in which any pair of tags …

Why Mixture Of Probability Distributions, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich Feb 2017

Why Mixture Of Probability Distributions, Andrzej Pownuk, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

If we have two random variables ξ1 and ξ1, then we can form their mixture if we take ξ1 with some probability w and ξ2 with the remaining probability 1 − w. The probability density function (pdf) ρ(x) of the mixture is a convex combination of the pdfs of the original variables: ρ(x) = w * ρ1(x) +( 1 − w) * ρ2(x). A natural question is: can we use other functions f(ρ1, ρ2) to combine the pdfs, i.e., to produce a new pdf ρ(x) =f(ρ1 …

Experimentally Observed Dark Matter Confinement Clarifies A Discrepancy In Estimating The Universe's Expansion Speed, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Feb 2017

Experimentally Observed Dark Matter Confinement Clarifies A Discrepancy In Estimating The Universe's Expansion Speed, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is well known the our Universe is expanding. In principle, we can estimate the expansion speed either directly, by observing the current state of the Universe, or indirectly, by analyzing the cosmic background radiation. Surprisingly, these two estimates lead to somewhat different expansion speeds. This discrepancy is a important challenge for cosmologists. Another challenge comes from recent experiments that show that, contrary to the original idea that dark matter and regular (baryonic) matter practically do not interact, dark matter actually "shadows" the normal matter.

In this paper, we show that this "dark matter confinement" can explain the discrepancy between …

Incorporating A Spatial Prior Into Nonlinear D-Bar Eit Imaging For Complex Admittivities, Sarah J. Hamilton, Jennifer L. Mueller, Melody Alsaker Feb 2017

Incorporating A Spatial Prior Into Nonlinear D-Bar Eit Imaging For Complex Admittivities, Sarah J. Hamilton, Jennifer L. Mueller, Melody Alsaker

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) aims to recover the internal conductivity and permittivity distributions of a body from electrical measurements taken on electrodes on the surface of the body. The reconstruction task is a severely ill-posed nonlinear inverse problem that is highly sensitive to measurement noise and modeling errors. Regularized D-bar methods have shown great promise in producing noise-robust algorithms by employing a low-pass filtering of nonlinear (nonphysical) Fourier transform data specific to the EIT problem. Including prior data with the approximate locations of major organ boundaries in the scattering transform provides a means of extending the radius of the low-pass …

The Proscriptive Principle And Logics Of Analytic Implication, Thomas M. Ferguson Feb 2017

The Proscriptive Principle And Logics Of Analytic Implication, Thomas M. Ferguson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The analogy between inference and mereological containment goes at least back to Aristotle, whose discussion in the Prior Analytics motivates the validity of the syllogism by way of talk of parts and wholes. On this picture, the application of syllogistic is merely the analysis of concepts, a term that presupposes—through the root ἀνά + λύω —a mereological background.

In the 1930s, such considerations led William T. Parry to attempt to codify this notion of logical containment in his system of analytic implication AI. Parry’s original system AI was later expanded to the system PAI. The hallmark of Parry’s systems—and of …

Combinatorial Polynomial Hirsch Conjecture, Sam Miller Jan 2017

Combinatorial Polynomial Hirsch Conjecture, Sam Miller

HMC Senior Theses

The Hirsch Conjecture states that for a d-dimensional polytope with n facets, the diameter of the graph of the polytope is at most n-d. This conjecture was disproven in 2010 by Francisco Santos Leal. However, a polynomial bound in n and d on the diameter of a polytope may still exist. Finding a polynomial bound would provide a worst-case scenario runtime for the Simplex Method of Linear Programming. However working only with polytopes in higher dimensions can prove challenging, so other approaches are welcome. There are many equivalent formulations of the Hirsch Conjecture, one of which is the …

The Document Similarity Network: A Novel Technique For Visualizing Relationships In Text Corpora, Dylan Baker Jan 2017

The Document Similarity Network: A Novel Technique For Visualizing Relationships In Text Corpora, Dylan Baker

HMC Senior Theses

With the abundance of written information available online, it is useful to be able to automatically synthesize and extract meaningful information from text corpora. We present a unique method for visualizing relationships between documents in a text corpus. By using Latent Dirichlet Allocation to extract topics from the corpus, we create a graph whose nodes represent individual documents and whose edge weights indicate the distance between topic distributions in documents. These edge lengths are then scaled using multidimensional scaling techniques, such that more similar documents are clustered together. Applying this method to several datasets, we demonstrate that these graphs are …

A Novel Approach For Library Materials Acquisition Using Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization, Daniel A. Sabol Jan 2017

A Novel Approach For Library Materials Acquisition Using Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization, Daniel A. Sabol

Publications and Research

The academic library materials acquisition problem is a challenge for librarian, since library cannot get enough funding from universities and the price of materials inflates greatly. In this paper, we analyze an integer mathematical model by considering the selection of acquired materials to maximize the average preference value as well as the budget execution rate under practical restrictions. The objective is to improve the Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO) algorithm by adding a Simulate Annealing algorithm to reduce premature convergence. Furthermore, the algorithm is implemented in multiple threaded environment. The experimental results show the efficiency of this approach.

Forcing Optimality And Brandt's Principle, Domenico Napoletani, Marco Panza, Daniele C. Struppa Jan 2017

Forcing Optimality And Brandt's Principle, Domenico Napoletani, Marco Panza, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

We argue that many optimization methods can be viewed as representatives of “forcing”, a methodological approach that attempts to bridge the gap between data and mathematics on the basis of an a priori trust in the power of a mathematical technique, even when detailed, credible models of a phenomenon are lacking or do not justify the use of this technique. In particular, we show that forcing is implied in particle swarms optimization methods, and in modeling image processing problems through optimization. From these considerations, we extrapolate a principle for general data analysis methods, what we call ‘Brandt’s principle’, namely the …

Neural Network Predictions Of A Simulation-Based Statistical And Graph Theoretic Study Of The Board Game Risk, Jacob Munson Jan 2017

Neural Network Predictions Of A Simulation-Based Statistical And Graph Theoretic Study Of The Board Game Risk, Jacob Munson

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

We translate the RISK board into a graph which undergoes updates as the game advances. The dissection of the game into a network model in discrete time is a novel approach to examining RISK. A review of the existing statistical findings of skirmishes in RISK is provided. The graphical changes are accompanied by an examination of the statistical properties of RISK. The game is modeled as a discrete time dynamic network graph, with the various features of the game modeled as properties of the network at a given time. As the network is computationally intensive to implement, results are produced …

Features Of Agent-Based Models, Reiko Heckel, Alexander Kurz, Edmund Chattoe-Brown Jan 2017

Features Of Agent-Based Models, Reiko Heckel, Alexander Kurz, Edmund Chattoe-Brown

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

The design of agent-based models (ABMs) is often ad-hoc when it comes to defining their scope. In order for the inclusion of features such as network structure, location, or dynamic change to be justified, their role in a model should be systematically analysed. We propose a mechanism to compare and assess the impact of such features. In particular we are using techniques from software engineering and semantics to support the development and assessment of ABMs, such as graph transformations as semantic representations for agent-based models, feature diagrams to identify ingredients under consideration, and extension relations between graph transformation systems to …

Computational Methods For Prediction And Classification Of G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Khodeza Begum Jan 2017

Computational Methods For Prediction And Classification Of G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Khodeza Begum

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) constitute the largest group of membrane receptor proteins in eukaryotes. Due to their significant roles in many physiological processes such as vision, smell, and inflammation, GPCRs are the targets of many prescribed drugs. However, the functional and structural diversity of GPCRs has kept their prediction and classification based on amino acid sequence data as a challenging bioinformatics problem. As existing computational methods to predict and classify GPCRs are focused on mammalian (mostly human) data, the ultimate goal of our project is to establish an ensemble approach and implement a web-based software that can be used reliably …
