Breathing Life Into The Liberal Arts Math Course: Ten Teaching Tips, Mark Colgan Jun 2007

Breathing Life Into The Liberal Arts Math Course: Ten Teaching Tips, Mark Colgan

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2007

Teaching the liberal arts math course for general education students presents unique challenges, but the course also offers exciting life applications and opportunities for integrating faith with a variety of creative topics. I try to make the course interesting by actively involving students and relating mathematical topics to their lives. In this paper I will discuss some things I have tried in the liberal arts math course I teach at Taylor University: using students' names, use of undergraduate teaching assistants (T As), group guessing games, handout booklets, hangman, group projects, memory verses, reflection papers, and life lessons.

Voltaire: A Study In Finding A Needle In A Haystack, Andrew Simoson Jun 2007

Voltaire: A Study In Finding A Needle In A Haystack, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2007

In Euler’s popular notes to a German Princess of 1837, he describes Voltaire as laughing about the idea of a hole going to Earth’s center. Did Voltaire actually write about this idea? Herein we describe the answers to be found upon searching through the huge opus of Voltaire’s written work. The result has links to Newton’s 1687 Principia discoveries and the French Academy’s early eighteenth century international scientific expeditions to Lapland and Peru establishing the veracity of those discoveries.

Connection-Oriented Computer Science Education, Kim Kihlstrom Jun 2007

Connection-Oriented Computer Science Education, Kim Kihlstrom

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2007

Computers play an important role in every area of our society and are integral in every academic discipline. Today's computer science students need a background that will prepare them for the expanding range of computing opportunities. The opportunities for computer professionals are varied and increasing in diversity. However, undergraduate computer science programs tend to be narrowly focused on programming and related technical skills. Female students in particular tend to be highly interested in exploring connections between computer science and other fields.

How can we leverage these observations at a liberal arts college, where interdisciplinary connections are highly desirable, and where …

Epsilon-Unfolding Orthogonal Polyhedra, Mirela Damian, Robin Flatland, Joseph O'Rourke Jun 2007

Epsilon-Unfolding Orthogonal Polyhedra, Mirela Damian, Robin Flatland, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

An unfolding of a polyhedron is produced by cutting the surface and flattening to a single, connected, planar piece without overlap (except possibly at boundary points). It is a long unsolved problem to determine whether every polyhedron may be unfolded. Here we prove, via an algorithm, that every orthogonal polyhedron (one whose faces meet at right angles) of genus zero may be unfolded. Our cuts are not necessarily along edges of the polyhedron, but they are always parallel to polyhedron edges. For a polyhedron of n vertices, portions of the unfolding will be rectangular strips which, in the worst case, …

Ets (Efficient, Transparent, And Secured) Self-Healing Service For Pervasive Computing Applications, Shameem Ahmed, Moushumi Sharmin, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

To ensure smooth functioning of numerous handheld devices anywhere anytime, the importance of self-healing mechanism cannot be overlooked. Incorporation of efficient fault detection and recovery in device itself is the quest for long but there is no existing self-healing scheme for devices running in pervasive computing environments that can be claimed as the ultimate solution. Moreover, the highest degree of transparency, security and privacy attainability should also be maintained. ETS Self-healing service, an integral part of our developing middleware named MARKS (Middleware Adaptability for Resource discovery, Knowledge usability, and Self-healing), holds promise for offering all of those functionalities.

An Augustinian Perspective On The Philosophy Of Mathematics, James Bradley Jan 2007

An Augustinian Perspective On The Philosophy Of Mathematics, James Bradley

ACMS Journal 2007

From a Christian perspective, both modern and post-modern approaches to the philosophy of mathematics have significant shortcomings. This paper explores an alternative. It summarizes Augustine of Hippo’s views on the four classical themes of the philosophy of mathematics-the ontology of mathematical objects, their epistemology, the nature of truth in mathematics, and how we account for the effectiveness of mathematics in describing the natural world. It then traces what has happened to Augustine’s perspective in the roughly 1600 years since it was written concluding with a discussion of some spiritual and intellectual problems with the currently dominant secular perspective.

A New Lower Bound On Guard Placement For Wireless Localization, Mirela Damian, Robin Flatland, Joseph O'Rourke, Suneeta Ramswami Jan 2007

A New Lower Bound On Guard Placement For Wireless Localization, Mirela Damian, Robin Flatland, Joseph O'Rourke, Suneeta Ramswami

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The problem of wireless localization asks to place and orient stations in the plane, each of which broadcasts a unique key within a fixed angular range, so that each point in the plane can determine whether it is inside or outside a given polygonal region. The primary goal is to minimize the number of stations. In this paper we establish a lower bound of ⌊2n/3⌋−1 stations for polygons in general position, for the case in which the placement of stations is restricted to polygon vertices, improving upon the existing ⌈n/2⌉ lower bound.

World Bank -Cpa Conflict: The Struggle To Define Human Rights And Development In The Philippines, Adam B. Robbins Jan 2007

World Bank -Cpa Conflict: The Struggle To Define Human Rights And Development In The Philippines, Adam B. Robbins

Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the interactions between the World Bank (hereafter, the Bank) and the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), an indigenous and environmental advocacy group based in the Cordillera region of Luzon, in the Philippines. Using data gathered through both text-based and participatory research methods, I analyze the discursive relationship and violent confrontations between the two organizations. Conflicting development and human rights values cause the majority of these conflicts. I focus on how each organization enacts development and human rights, and how this leads to conflict. Ultimately, I intend for this thesis to offer practical guidance for the reader involved in …

Connecting Polygonizations Via Stretches And Twangs, Mirela Damian, Robin Flatland, Joseph O'Rourke, Suneeta Ramswami Jan 2007

Connecting Polygonizations Via Stretches And Twangs, Mirela Damian, Robin Flatland, Joseph O'Rourke, Suneeta Ramswami

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We show that the space of polygonizations of a fixed planar point set S of n points is connected by O(n2 ) “moves” between simple polygons. Each move is composed of a sequence of atomic moves called “stretches” and "twangs". These atomic moves walk between weakly simple "polygonal wraps" of S. These moves show promise to serve as a basis for generating random polygons.

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This book aims to assist social scientists to analyze their problems using fuzzy models. The basic and essential fuzzy matrix theory is given. The book does not promise to give the complete properties of basic fuzzy theory or basic fuzzy matrices. Instead, the authors have only tried to give those essential basically needed to develop the fuzzy model. The authors do not present elaborate mathematical theories to work with fuzzy matrices; instead they have given only the needed properties by way of examples. The authors feel that the book should mainly help social scientists who are interested in finding out …

Pi-Calculus In Logical Form, Marcello M. Bonsangue, Alexander Kurz Jan 2007

Pi-Calculus In Logical Form, Marcello M. Bonsangue, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Abramsky’s logical formulation of domain theory is extended to encompass the domain theoretic model for picalculus processes of Stark and of Fiore, Moggi and Sangiorgi. This is done by defining a logical counterpart of categorical constructions including dynamic name allocation and name exponentiation, and showing that they are dual to standard constructs in functor categories. We show that initial algebras of functors defined in terms of these constructs give rise to a logic that is sound, complete, and characterises bisimilarity. The approach is modular, and we apply it to derive a logical formulation of pi-calculus. The resulting logic is a …

Security In Pervasive Computing: Current Status And Open Issues, Munirul Haque, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Million of wireless device users are ever on the move, becoming more dependent on their PDAs, smart phones, and other handheld devices. With the advancement of pervasive computing, new and unique capabilities are available to aid mobile societies. The wireless nature of these devices has fostered a new era of mobility. Thousands of pervasive devices are able to arbitrarily join and leave a network, creating a nomadic environment known as a pervasive ad hoc network. However, mobile devices have vulnerabilities, and some are proving to be challenging. Security in pervasive computing is the most critical challenge. Security is needed to …

Chainability And Hemmingsen's Theorem, Paul Bankston Aug 2006

Chainability And Hemmingsen's Theorem, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

On the surface, the definitions of chainability and Lebesgue covering dimension ⩽1 are quite similar as covering properties. Using the ultracoproduct construction for compact Hausdorff spaces, we explore the assertion that the similarity is only skin deep. In the case of dimension, there is a theorem of E. Hemmingsen that gives us a first-order lattice-theoretic characterization. We show that no such characterization is possible for chainability, by proving that if κ is any infinite cardinal and AA is a lattice base for a nondegenerate continuum, then AA is elementarily equivalent to a lattice base for a continuum Y …

A Survey Of The Methods To Find Probability Density Functions, Nancy Picinic Ricca May 2006

A Survey Of The Methods To Find Probability Density Functions, Nancy Picinic Ricca

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Various methods are described in this thesis that will approximate probability density functions (PDF), also known as invariant measures for chaotic maps. When studying discrete dynamical systems, the measure of a map is important in describing its behavior because it captures the statistics of long term simulations. Being invariant means that this distribution remains the same, no matter when you observe it. The main goal is to understand how to obtain these PDFs for various one-dimensional maps using alternative methods to time series data.

The methods studied in this thesis include the Z-matrix and the Frobenius-Perron Operator, which are analytic …

Boundary Behavior Of Laplace Transforms, Timothy Ferguson May 2006

Boundary Behavior Of Laplace Transforms, Timothy Ferguson

Honors Theses

In this thesis, we examine the boundary behavior of Laplace transforms (as analytic functions on the right and left half planes) of certain bounded functions. The types of bounded functions we consider are Fourier transforms of measures and almost periodic functions.
