Parallel Preconditioners For Finite Element Computations, Emily Furst
Parallel Preconditioners For Finite Element Computations, Emily Furst
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This thesis sought to explore numerical methods for solving partial differential equations and to determine the best method of updating the deal.II software to utilize new Trilinos software packages. The one dimensional heat equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions and nonzero initial conditions was solved analytically, using the Forward in Time, Central in Space scheme of the finite difference method, and the Crank-Nicolson scheme of the finite element method. The solutions from using the finite difference method and the finite element method were then compared to the analytic solution to determine accuracy. An example using the same Trilinos packages that are …

Once We Know That A Polynomial Mapping Is Rectifiable, We Can Algorithmically Find A Rectification, Julio Urenda, David Finston, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
It is known that some polynomial mappings φ: Ck --> Cn are rectifiable in the sense that there exists a polynomial mapping α: Cn --> Cn whose inverse is also polynomial and for which α(φ(z1, ...,zk)) = (z1, ...,zk, 0, ..., 0) for all z1, ...,zk. In many cases, the existence of such a rectification is proven indirectly, without an explicit construction of the mapping α.
In this paper, we use Tarski-Seidenberg algorithm (for deciding the first order theory of real numbers) to design …

In many real-life situations, we are interested in the values of physical quantities x1, ..., xn which are difficult (or even impossible) to measure directly. To estimate these values, we measure easier-to-measure quantities y1, ..., ym which are related to the desired quantities by a known relation, and use these measurement results to estimate xi. The corresponding data processing algorithms are sometimes very complex and time-consuming, so a natural question is: are simpler (and, thus, faster) algorithms possible for solving this data processing problem? In this paper, we show that by using …

Sensitivity Of Mixed Models To Computational Algorithms Of Time Series Data, Gunaime Nevine
Doctoral Dissertations
Statistical analysis is influenced by implementation of the algorithms used to execute the computations associated with various statistical techniques. Over many years; very important criteria for model comparison has been studied and examined, and two algorithms on a single dataset have been performed numerous times. The goal of this research is not comparing two or more models on one dataset, but comparing models with numerical algorithms that have been used to solve them on the same dataset.
In this research, different models have been broadly applied in modeling and their contrasting which are affected by the numerical algorithms in different …

Why It Is Important To Precisiate Goals, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
After Zadeh and Bellman explained how to optimize a function under fuzzy constraints, there have been many successful applications of this optimization. However, in many practical situations, it turns out to be more efficient to precisiate the objective function before performing optimization. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this empirical fact.

Simple Linear Interpolation Explains All Usual Choices In Fuzzy Techniques: Membership Functions, T-Norms, T-Conorms, And Defuzzification, Vladik Kreinovich, Jonathan Quijas, Esthela Gallardo, Caio De Sa Lopes, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Most applications of fuzzy techniques use piece-wise linear (triangular or trapezoid) membership functions, min or product t-norms, max or algebraic sum t-conorms, and centroid defuzzification. Similarly, most applications of interval-valued fuzzy techniques use piecewise-linear lower and upper membership functions. In this paper, we show that all these choices can be explained as applications of simple linear interpolation.

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a popular dimension-reduction method to reduce the complexity and obtain the informative aspects of high-dimensional datasets. When the data distribution is skewed, data transformation is commonly used prior to applying PCA. Such transformation is usually obtained from previous studies, prior knowledge, or trial-and-error. In this work, we develop a model-based method that integrates data transformation in PCA and finds an appropriate data transformation using the maximum profile likelihood. Extensions of the method to handle functional data and missing values are also developed. Several numerical algorithms are provided for efficient computation. The proposed method is illustrated …

Identifying Locations Of Active Corrosion Growth From Successive In-Line Inspections, Tom Bubenik, William V. Harper, Pam Moreno, Steven Polasik
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
The integrated approach covered by this paper identifies corrosion activity using a combination of statistics, inspection-signal comparisons, and engineering analyses. The approach relies on an understanding of ILI and the mechanisms that cause corrosion and its growth. Pipeline operators can use the approach to calculate remaining lives, prioritize repairs and mitigation, and extend reassessment intervals. This process is collectively known as statistically-active corrosion.

Molecular docking is a computational technique which predicts the binding energy and the preferred binding mode of a ligand to a protein target. Virtual screening is a tool which uses docking to investigate large chemical libraries to identify ligands that bind favorably to a protein target. We have developed a novel scoring based distributed protein docking application to improve enrichment in virtual screening. The application addresses the issue of time and cost of screening in contrast to conventional systematic parallel virtual screening methods in two ways. Firstly, it automates the process of creating and launching multiple independent dockings on a …

Healthcare facility is scarce for rural women in the developing world. The situation is worse for patients who are suffering from diseases that require long-term feedback-oriented monitoring such as breast cancer. Lack of motivation to go to the health centers on patients’ side due to sociocultural barriers, financial restrictions and transportation hazards results in inadequate data for proper assessment. Fortunately, mobile phones have penetrated the masses even in rural communities of the developing countries. In this scenario, a mobile phone-based remote symptom monitoring system (RSMS) with inspirational videos can serve the purpose of both patients and doctors. Here, we present …

The use of human pluripotent cell progeny for cardiac disease modeling, drug testing and therapeutics requires the ability to efficiently induce pluripotent cells into the cardiomyogenic lineage. Although direct activation of the Activin-A and/or Bmp pathways with growth factors yields context-dependent success, recent studies have shown that induction of Wnt signaling using low molecular weight molecules such as CHIR, which in turn induces the Activin-A and Bmp pathways, is widely effective. To further enhance the reproducibility of CHIR-induced cardiomyogenesis, and to ultimately promote myocyte maturation, we are using exogenous growth factors to optimize cardiomyogenic signaling downstream of CHIR induction. As …

"The study of fabricating topologically optimized parts is presented hereafter. The mapping of topology optimization results for Standard Tessellation Language (STL) writing would enable the solid freeform fabrication of lightweight mechanisms. Aerospace leaders such as NASA, Boeing, Airbus, European Aeronautic Defense And Space Company (EADS), and GE Aero invest in topology optimization research for the production of lightweight materials. Certain concepts such as microstructural homogenization, discretization, and mapping are reviewed and presented in the context of topology optimization. Future biomedical applications of solid freeform fabrication such as organ printing stand to save millions of lives through the robust development of …
Two Compact Incremental Prime Sieves, Jonathan P. Sorenson
Two Compact Incremental Prime Sieves, Jonathan P. Sorenson
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
A prime sieve is an algorithm that finds the primes up to a bound n. We say that a prime sieve is incremental, if it can quickly determine if n+1 is prime after having found all primes up to n. We say a sieve is compact if it uses roughly √n space or less. In this paper, we present two new results.
- We describe the rolling sieve, a practical, incremental prime sieve that takes O(n log log n) time and O(√n log n) bits of space.
- We also …

A Domain Decomposition Method For The Steady-State Navier-Stokes-Darcy Model With Beavers-Joseph Interface Condition, Xiaoming He, Jian Li, Yanping Lin, Ju Ming
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes and analyzes a Robin-type multiphysics domain decomposition method (DDM) for the steady-state Navier-Stokes-Darcy model with three interface conditions. In addition to the two regular interface conditions for the mass conservation and the force balance, the Beavers-Joseph condition is used as the interface condition in the tangential direction. The major mathematical difficulty in adopting the Beavers-Joseph condition is that it creates an indefinite leading order contribution to the total energy budget of the system [Y. Cao et al., Comm. Math. Sci., 8 (2010), pp. 1-25; Y. Cao et al., SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 47 (2010), pp. 4239-4256]. In …

Contributions To The Solution Of Large Nonlinear Systems Via Model-Order Reduction And Interval Constraint Solving Techniques, Leobardo Valera
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Many engineering problems boil down to solving partial differential equations (PDEs) that describe real-life phenomena. Nevertheless, efficiently and reliably solving such problems constitutes a major challenge in computational sciences and in engineering in general.
PDE-based systems can reach sizes so large after they are discretized. The large size in these problems generate several issues, among them we can mention: large space of storing, computing time, and the most important, lost of accuracy. A popular approach to solving such problems is assume that the PDE's solution is in a subspace, and the solution is sought there. This assumption and later searching …

Operator Calculus Algorithms For Multi-Constrained Paths, Jamila Ben Slimane, Rene' Schott, Ye Qiong Song, G. Stacey Staples, Evangelia Tsiontsiou
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Classical approaches to multi-constrained routing problems generally require construction of trees and the use of heuristics to prevent combinatorial explosion. Introduced here is the notion of constrained path algebras and their application to multi-constrained path problems. The inherent combinatorial properties of these algebras make them useful for routing problems by implicitly pruning the underlying tree structures. Operator calculus (OC) methods are generalized to multiple non-additive constraints in order to develop algorithms for the multi constrained path problem and multi constrained optimization problem. Theoretical underpinnings are developed first, then algorithms are presented. These algorithms demonstrate the tremendous simplicity, flexibility and speed …

This study addressed the opportunities to learn (OTL) modeling in algebra provided to secondary mathematics pre-service teachers (PSTs). To investigate these OTL, we interviewed five instructors of required mathematics and mathematics education courses that had the potential to include opportunities for PSTs to learn algebra at three universities. We also interviewed a group of three to four PSTs at each of the universities. We coded the interview transcripts using an analytic framework developed based on related literature and policy documents. We report the similarities and differences in perspectives among instructors and PSTs related to modeling at each university, along with …
Characterizations Of Gamma Distribution Via Sub-Independent Random Variables, Gholamhossein Hamedani
Characterizations Of Gamma Distribution Via Sub-Independent Random Variables, Gholamhossein Hamedani
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
The concept of sub-independence is based on the convolution of the distributions of the random variables. It is much weaker than that of independence, but is shown to be sufficient to yield the conclusions of important theorems and results in probability and statistics. It also provides a measure of dissociation between two random variables which is much stronger than uncorrelatedness. Inspired by the excellent work of Jin and Lee (2014), we present certain characterizations of gamma distribution based on the concept of sub-independence.

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We present various characterizations of a recently introduced distribution (Ghosh 2014), called Kumaraswamy- Half- Cauchy distribution based on: (i) a simple relation between two truncated moments; (ii) truncated moment of certain function of the 1st order statistic; (iii) truncated moment of certain function of the random variable; (iv) hazard function; (v) distribution of the 1st order statistic; (vi) via record values. We also provide some remarks on bivariate Gumbel copula distribution whose marginal distributions are Kumaraswamy- Half-Cauchy distributions.
The Module Isomorphism Problem Reconsidered, Peter A. Brooksbank
The Module Isomorphism Problem Reconsidered, Peter A. Brooksbank
Faculty Journal Articles
Algorithms to decide isomorphism of modules have been honed continually over the last 30 years, and their range of applicability has been extended to include modules over a wide range of rings. Highly efficient computer implementations of these algorithms form the bedrock of systems such as GAP and MAGMA, at least in regard to computations with groups and algebras. By contrast, the fundamental problem of testing for isomorphism between other types of algebraic structures -- such as groups, and almost any type of algebra -- seems today as intractable as ever. What explains the vastly different complexity status of the …

For several decades the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) steadily increased in fair-skinned, indoor-working people around the world. Scientists think poor tanning ability resulting in sunburns initiate CMM, but they do not understand why the incidence continues to increase despite the increased use of sunscreens and formulations offering more protection. This paradox, along with lower incidences of CMM in outdoor workers, although they have significantly higher annual UV doses than indoor workers have, perplexes scientists. We found a temporal exponential increase in the CMM incidence indicating second-order reaction kinetics revealing the existence of 2 major risk factors. From epidemiology …

We introduce a new class of continuous distributions called the transmuted exponentiated generalized-G family which extends the exponentiated generalized-G class introduced by Cordeiro et al. (2013). We provide some special models for the new family. Some of its mathematical properties including explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments, generating function, Rényi and Shannon entropies, order statistics and probability weighted moments are derived. The estimation of the model parameters is performed by maximum likelihood. The flexibility of the proposed family is illustrated by means of an applications to real dataset.

We present certain characterizations of a recently introduced distribution (Afify et al., 2014), called Transmuted Complementary Weibull Geometric distribution based on: hazard function ; a simple relation between two truncated moments. We like to mention that the characterization which is expressed in terms of the ratio of truncated moments is stable in the sense of weak convergence. It does not require a closed form for the cumulative distribution function and serves as a bridge between a first order differential equation and probability.
